Even as layoffs persist, good jobs go begging

“Good” jobs is defined as $55K+benefits for engineers, energy researchers and RNs. Funny thing is those all require degrees and years of experience, but they want to pay about a third less than the going rate. This looks to me like more of the same old push for easing up on the H1-B and L1 visa restrictions. The old “I can’t get domestic folks to work for crap wages, so I’ll just ask to bring in someone from overseas to do it for the same crap wages, and all will be good.” nonsense. Why is it that competition that brings wages down is all good to them, but competition that pushes wages up is cause for bringing in people from overseas?

Please understand that I don’t have a problem with immigrants at all. I think they enrich our culture and bring quite a bit to the table. It just upsets me that I am (and others like me are) forced to compete with people coming here on H1-B visas whenever domestic employers choose (just fill out this form saying you can’t find the workers here), and get government subsidies to bring someone over, instead of paying good wages for people that are already here, already experienced and already able to do the job, but want to make a decent living at what they do. The truth is that there are many people who can do those jobs, they just aren’t willing to do them for the crap wages that are being offered.
