Many of us have now seen or heard the cheers of various right-wingers over the United States losing out on the Olympics to Brazil. They reserve their patriotism for when it can lead to bombing things.
As always, what Digby says:
Just as a successful universal health care system would doom the Republicans, a successful negotiation on nonproliferation would doom the neocon vision that you cannot talk to adversaries and only force is advisable and just.
So, naturally after the U.S. and our european allies obtain a diplomatic breakthrough with Iran comes the lying and the pleading for war. The more ridiculous the claim the better. Take it away Elliott Abrams.
People used to say that — that if there’s an attack on Iran, you know the population is going to get patriotic. But that’s what Americans would do. I don’t know that it’s what Iranians are going to do, considering the way that regime is hated in Iran.
Yeah, what’s an unpopular regime compared to the thrill of being bombed?

Let’s destroy the country in the process of destroying the President
In the neocon mind the end always justify the means
Yet another triumph of ideology over reason and evidence. History has proven few things more definitively than that bombing a populace does not demoralize it or erode the popularity of its regime.
(BTW, I’d bet anything that if America ever were actually losing a real war, if it were actually invaded, that most Republican and right wing cadres would collaborate with the invader, if that meant that they could maintain their material luxuries and a semblance of power.
Everything we know about them guarantees that.)
mornin’ attaturk – all.
I don’t know that it’s what Iranians are going to do, considering the way that regime is hated in Iran.
Scott Ritter does: (from yesterday)
http://www.c-span.org/Watch/Me…..99198.aspx
short version: won’t work, could only lead to futile and insufficient boots on the ground, possible nuclear escalation, and definite wholesale massive fucked-uppery across the entire Middle East. (starts at about 12:50 for a coupla minutes – picks back up at about 24:00)
All in the name of principle. Sometimes the logic is difficult to follow: best to just go with catchy talking points and not worry your head about inconsistencies :-(
Is our children learning?
I wrote the NY Times to complain when I noticed the flurry of articles trying to cast doubt on the positive developments in Iran. It was just as bad as the “yellowcake” stories: ominous tone, baseless speculation, recycled and distorted facts. Apparently nothing has changed since Judith Miller’s resignation. At least three different Times reporters were involved in publishing this rubbish.
Pragmatism – the right wing way.
Neocons don’t even use the word “adversary”. Too grey. Good or evil, friend or enemy. Kind of a parakeet mentality.
nuance is a word not found in the average neocons vocabulary
Good morning, pups. It’s The Pasty Little Putz, Cohen and Krugman today. The Pasty Little Putz has the unmitigated gall to vomit up a piece of crap called “Inequality as Usual” in which he gurgles that if a period of Democratic dominance doesn’t close the gap between the rich and the rest of us, it will represent a significant policy failure for contemporary liberalism. I just fucking hate Mondays… Mr. Cohen, in “The Public Imperative,” says Europeans don’t get why Americans don’t agree that universal health coverage is a fundamental right. He doesn’t think the debate is about health. Prof. Krugman addresses “The Politics of Spite,” and says if Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. I don’t particularly want to venture forth into the rain and go to work, but seeing as I haven’t won the lottery I guess I don’t have much choice. (I’ve discovered that the fly in the ointment of trying to win the lottery is having to buy a ticket…) Have a great day.
The Pasty Little Putz…
Isn’t rooting against the administration “treason” and “un-American”?
oh wait – this is 2009 – it’s now a competitive sport.
Good morning. I wasn’t here Friday (frazzled nerves). I had my 2nd round interview for a promotion scheduled for that day. TaDa….I got it. Now, I start the week trying to clean up some things at my current job and I start Thursday.
As to the subject at hand, MoJoe started his show with this story about being in a medicated haze last week and dreaming that Americans were cheering over the loss of the Olympics. Hate him but that was pretty good.
Remember when O’Reilly would ask liberals if they wanted us to win in Iraq? He was trying to prove that we were rooting against the US. Projection, pure and simple.
congratulations!!
Krugman addresses that head on in very clear language this morning.
Congrats!
That’s former convicted felon, liar and would be war criminal, Elliott Abrams to you.
Thank you. Very excited. The downside (which isn’t very important), I couldn’t go with Mr. Solai to Detroit. He’s there solo, and if his phone calls are any indication, he’s having quite the time without me.
Good news for a Monday morning !
Glad to hear it !
George Stephanopoulos, performing on the radio in drag under the
stage name of Cokie Roberts, sez:
After the unemployment numbers and the Chicago Olympics fiasco,
Obama and the Democrats need a win on health care. Some liberals don’t understand that.
The issue of why the stimulus was so small,
and the political
calculationsmiscalculations that led to it being so,is down the memory hole.
Congratulations to the two women (and one man) who
won the Nobel Prize in Medicine this morning!
Take that, Larry Summers.
I know it’s not something that is winning friends, but I am increasingly disturbed at the “zionist” or pro Israeli positions taken by so many in AEI, PNAC, AIPAC and so forth.
Exactly what is the threat posed by Iran to the USA as opposed to the threat to Israel?
I certainly don’t sanction military aggression over diplomacy to settle international matters. But all this talk about what other nations are doing to defend themselves as being our bidness smacks of hypocrisy. Would we accept other nations telling us what weapon systems we can develop or deploy inside our borders or on our bases, vessels and airplans around the world? Hell no.
When we did shock and awe, I believe the French objected to the use of their airspace for overflights from the UK in a rare challenge to US military hegemony.
This big stick cop of the world needs to stop.
There are issues which effect all nations and need to be dealt with by all such as the environment and pollution, global warming which doesn’t recognize borders. The international community has done a terrible job in protecting the oceans and fish which inhabit them. We can’t seem to find the wherewithal to work with the international community on climate issues, yet we barge right ahead and stick our noses into the affairs of nations 10,000 miles away. Totally bizarre which claims they are looking for non green gas energy solutions. Yet to us it’s a military threat.
Where are the adults in these policy matters?
I think it’s high time that Elliott Abrams leave Earth and return to the Romulan Empire.

Call on Specter for a nuclear free Middle East and you’ll get…. silence.
I’m so glad we developed these weapons because they brought the peace and security we’ve dreamed of/NOT
Morning all. Noticed that there were nearly three hundred Iraqis killed last month. Why is that not in the press along with a reiteration of how well the surge worked.
The next attack on America that results in tens of thousands of Americans dying will be applauded loudly by the republican party of our country. We know this, because look how they acted when America lost it’s bid for the 2016 Olympics? They were ecstatic! Pointed out this morning on Morning Joe…..no other country that lost their Olympic bid had their citizens applauding their loss!
Only American republicans applauded their country’s loss. Shameful!
THE FINAL CONCLUSION: republicans hate America, always have, they hope She fails, and they will applaud the demise of Her.
What is notable to me, besides Elliot Abrams not being in prison for past crimes, is that he is able to make such statements to the MSM without immediate challenge. He is merely repeating the fantasy speech from the lead up to the last right wing disaster, the invasion of Iraq. They will greet us as liberators, huh? Sure Elliot. Take a few more Oxycontin and that nonsense will all be true. And what credible news source would go to a FAIL like Abrams for comment?
Perhaps if France had blockaded us during the revolution it would have turned out better for them, no?
Nice of Abrams to ignore the fact that any negative sentiment against the current leadership in Iran has been amped up by millions and possibly billions of dollars in ops ranging from outright propaganda to funding nascent rebel factions. The true, un-burnished sentiment of Iranians isn’t available to us because of the last administration’s constant intervention in Iran over the last eight years.
What’s puzzling to me is how little we question this. It’s further puzzling that we never question the opposition, if it has been bought by us.
It’s also puzzling that we never question whether the reason the current leadership in Iran clung so tightly to power was that it perceived itself as a better bargainer against all-out war than its opposition, which might do something entirely different once in office than expected by the public.
Remember a certain compassionate conservative? Yeah. That same play book isn’t limited to favorite sons from Texas.
Don’t get me wrong on this; the current administration in Iran earned massive enmity and contempt with its brutalization of protesters and any other dissent, let alone its pervasively heavy-handed undemocratic treatment of the Iranian public. But we don’t have all the facts, there are many entities who want to ensure we don’t get them, and we’re doing a poor job of demanding them.
Elliot Abrams was Reagan’s Asst. Sec’y of State for Humanitarian Affairs in the early 80’s. As such he first denied, then trivialized the torture, rape and assassination of 1000 Salvadoran men, women and children by US trained paramilitary around El Mozote in early December, 1981.
Their blood is on his hands. Their suffering is on his conscience, if he has one.
Elliot Abrams should be required to register as a slimebag and a war criminal if he wants to continue to speak publicly.
They will greet us with flowers and Persian rugs! And they will name a plaza after Elliot Abrahms. Douchebag Square.

Every time a corporate media outlet invites one of these shameless partisan mouthpieces on the air, they should be called on it. You can’t invite sociopathic right-wing authoritarians on the air and ask them credulous open-ended questions as if you’re going to get anything from them *other than* Luntz-y talking points and ruthless dissembling.
When Chris Matthews or David Gregory asks (e.g.) Elliot Abrams a question, what they’re really doing is saying to the audience, “Okay, I just talked for about 30 seconds, and now that I’m done talking, my guest is going to recite from memorized talking points for 2 minutes, as if reading from their press release, and I will listen attentively as they completely ignore my question and lie to my face.” Is anyone really tuning in for *that*?
Every Republican today should be asked, point-blank, before the fact, to get them on the record:
If America were attacked by terrorists tomorrow, would you undermine our Commander-in-Chief or would you stand with him?
These hypertribalist scum will use any opportunity to have it both ways, unless they are pinned down (like the dessicated insects they are).
well, if you’re too stupid to know the answer to a simple question like that, why is anybody wasting their time listening to you prove how stupid you are ???
I mean, COME ON DUDE, the fookin Russians defended Stalin
so seriously, how stupid is he ???
no collective memory
never been to a school in his fucking life
did he grow up inside a small metal box ???
has any body checked to see if he can read …
