A money-laundering trick, in case anyone is so inclined, is to have more than $10,000 in an account and wash checks in amounts under that through the account. As long as the amount on deposit exceeds the amounts of the checks there should be no problem cleaning the dirty money.

This method is used by drug dealers and people who don’t have bank accounts so there are no tangible assets for the IRS to attach if it decides to go after them. They have certain people who they go to in order to get cash without any bells going off. The number of people they use varies, but with diligence it’s possible to find the threads.

I once spent the better part of a year going through cancelled checks from a crooked lawyer and his wife to find out where she was cashing child support checks in an effort to ferret out their tangled web.

Finally put him away for 6 years on tax evasion and RICO violations.
