Oh the Joys of “God” Motherhood…
Good morning, Everyone! I hope all is well. Well, Rashad and I made it another week. He is now 5 weeks old and running everybody around him.
This week he is talking, trying to sing and turning over. It has been 14 years since I had a baby around, and I just don’t remember my sister being this active.
My “friend” has been absolutely wonderful in helping me with him during the day. Even though I work from home, actually being able to get my work done while he is there has been a challenge. Working moms and dads, how do you do it?
We had his baby shower last Saturday and it couldn’t have been any better. He was the center of attraction. And there was more food than we knew what to do with. Not just finger food, but real meat and potatoes!
What type of menu have you served at similar gatherings? I would like to have a holiday social this year and could use some help putting a sample menu together.
I just pray that we get this wonderful country together, this country that is supposed to be the greatest in the world, before he gets to be our age. I look at him now, and the the state of the economy, the lack of healthcare, terrorism, violence…do I have to go on? And I wonder, what kind of future will he have?

About Firedoglake
Missed you last week. Just wanna say hi and welcome. Been here since the LIbby trial.
Hello and thanks for the welcome. Always nice to meet one of the “veterans”
Morning, Devaria – yes for all the kids (some not quite as small as this little guy), we need to work for their futures so that they actually GET one. Up here in Central NY, the sun finally came out and the rain stopped. Big cleaning day for me.
Good Morning DeVeria! and BFL
looking for recipes now. Baby showers are so much fun.
G’morning. My point exactly. This weekend I am in Augusta, GA at a church convention and it looks like the sun may prevail, but the clouds are definitely trying to get in there. I need to be at home cleaning…maybe next week, or the week after….oh well, one day :)
Mornin’ Ms DeVeria.
One of my simple salad recipes is:
Fresh spinach leaves
Strawberries
Onion slices
Oil/Vinegar dressing
Although at first blush it may not seem to be a good mix, the flavors actually blend quite nicely.
Yes, we had a great time. You know, normally the baby hasn’t arrived yet; but, I’m telling you, it was something having him there looking around like “Godmommy, who are all of these people?”
I’m going to have to write that down. It sounds delicious…I love strawberries!
Good morning again. Got epu’d.
Dreary drizzly day in the mid-Hudson. Once again the guy did not come back to finish fixing my bush hog, as he promised. Farm equipment repair guys are scarce as hens teeth and getting them to show up requires begging & pleading. I wait to mow my fields until the field nesting birds have fledged their second brood, and this year I waited longer so the bees would have wild flowers for as long as possible, but this is getting ridiculous.
Geez…sounds frustrating. And rain on top of that…maybe things will clear up a little later and he’ll surprise you and show up. I’m sure some additional “begging and pleading” won’t hurt…
I don’t know that he works on the weekends, though during harvest season he might. I’ll wait until Monday to bug him, to be polite.
My beekeeper is coming tomorrow to inspect the hive and do a demonstration and mini-lecture for a couple of friends of mine. I’m serving them breakfast. Thinking of making quiche (there used to be a store in Manhattan that sold the very best quiche; never have had it duplicated since; Julia Childs recipe, which I made once, comes close, even with my low cooking skills), an apple & potato combo, and some fresh fruit.
good morning all!
going to live blog my panera bread saturday instead (or in addition) to my usual sunday live blog
they opened this place just for me this morning, I know this since I am the only customer, they also turned on their free wifi just for me I might add and hired a host of college girls just for me to flirt
today I’m having the suasage egg and cheese, no bread, (atkins) and I replaced the swiss cheese with gorganzola
I nuke this till the gorganzola is like soup over the egss
yum
going to work in a smidge so won’t be able to do continuouos live panera live blog but it’s an overcast wet morning, still the sea gulls are out
btw
if a sea gull flys over the sea, what flys over they bay?
DeVeria – a church convention! Do you have a hat (I’m a hat person and feel I was born into the wrong denomination..)?
I love baby shower sweets
Here’s some really cute pacifier cookies — no real cooking involved.
You need Oreos, Lifesavers, jelly beans, and Hershey bars, and a little time.
Do you use red or yellow onions for this?
MMM…send me a plate. How do you make the quiche?
G’morning. What’s the site?
Morning, eCAHN — you are so right about repair guys – there are moments when I feel my son should have gone straight to BOCES and gotten a certificate to be a welder.
I think that depends on the family – my mom was major superstitious about this sort of thing and insisted on my showers and gifts being done AFTER the babies arrived.
What’s the apple and potato combo?
Something tells me you are an incorrigible flirt!
I have hats…I look good in them if I must say so myself…lol; but, I don’t wear them that often at all. We wear a lot of hats for special occasions though…
Oh dear, perris, I was fine with your comment until I got to the last line. A little early for corny jokes. *g*
….And they didn’t leave the house till they were christened.
no names ahead of time!!
my favorite flirt line for waitress, you can use this if you like, so long as you tell it with the right amount of snark;
[waitress] good morning!
[moi] good morning to you!!! are you taking my order today?
[waitress] yes I am
[moi] then I order you to meet me after work
this has never worked but at least I get a big laugh
oh those are too cute! Maybe when I have my baby….
oh Lordy, I would have been housebound until I was three, my mother baptized in batches.
tee hee
It’s basically and egg custard in a crust. Without going downstairs to get the recipe, I don’t remember exactly what’s in it. But it’s the quality of the custard that makes all the difference. Gotta be smooth & creamy. Most restaurants don’t make it that way. I don’t know why, but perhaps because it’s a little tricky to get it to come out right.
Oh really? Well, I enjoyed it a lot more with him being there. When its my turn, I’m gonna tell everybody that is how I want mine…
never too early for our perris.
panera bread is a beakfast restaurant, they cook their own bread and bagels but it’s more like a bagel nosh then a bakery
I haven’t make it yet, but it’s apple season & gotta have potatoes for breakfast, so it seems like a good idea. For you, I’ll go get the recipe, and also the quiche recipe at the same time.
things have really changed. That’s how my grandparents were, but now the babies are “out” so soon
sounds good
I have news. I got a major promotion yesterday. Very excited. On the downside, I was supposed to go to Detroit with Mr.Solai tomorrow (he’s on business), well, that was canceled but, really, who cares? There was a gathering here last night to celebrate and I’ll begin Thursday. Good economic news is rare these days, so I’m feeling very fortunate.
I use yellow onions but the red work as well (I just get real bad heartburn from the red – go figure)
great
Congratulations! You don’t hear good news like that too often right now. I’m glad things worked out for you.
This may seem like a dumb question, but is there really a difference?
YAY!! Solai!! Good Economic News in Upstate NY? It’s the Second Coming!
Had to work last week and missed your post.
Welcome to the Lake ,I’m looking forward to reading your future posts.
billybugs
Thank you. It was an exciting day.
Potatoe Apple Fry
3 tart apples
6 medium mew red potatoes
lemon juice, butter, vegtable oil, salt sour cream
Slice apples & steep with lemon juice. Slice potatoes, fry lightly on each side, add apples & cook a bit longer. Serve with sour cream.
That’s the short version. If you want the full one let me know & I’ll type it.
For the quiche filling, it’s 3 eggs and 1-1/2 to 2 cups heavy cream, salt, pepper, nutmeg, beaten until mixed. That’s all. Then pour into the pastry shell, with bits of bacon on the bottom.
Much congratulations! You’re right about the paucity of good economic news, so celebrate well.
Well, good morning and thank you for the welcome.
Well, it’s a government job. What we’d all like to see is some private industries do some hiring (sigh).
OK. Coffee’s gone, so I’m off for now.
The Clueless Cook on red, yellow, white, sweet onions
Im going to have to try those. They sound good and not a lot of work. Easy and quick is better for me!
DeVeria,
In your family do you have particular responsibilities as a Godparent? My mother was a twin so we had an automatic Godmother. So it wasn’t formalized…
I guess it depends on the church denomination.
This Saturday morning post invariably turns toward a discussion about food.
I’m starved and must go get something to eat , hard to type when my stomach is rumbling like this!
tell me about it…
Have a good one!
seems that way doesn’t it…I’m sitting here in this hotel room wondering how far the starbucks is?
good information
Well, it has been a little different for me. We didn’t know Rashad was coming until he got here. So, EVERYTHING had to be done immediately. I take care of him while his mother goes to school. In my church when he is christened, I’ll have to go stand with his mother and say that if something happens and at any time she is unable to take care of him, I’ll step in. But honestly, that happened as soon as he got here.
Just wanted to say “Hi”, and welcome to your regular spot at FDL.
I’ve been away the last two weeks, but fortunately they left Christy’s last thread open so I could offer my thanks and get well wishes.
And, Rashad is adorable!
We have a grandson who will be 2 on Halloween, and he’s quickly become the center of our world.
He even occasionally offers up comments here at FDL if he comes in the basement when I’m online; whatever “Bang, Bang, Bang” on the keyboard comes out as.
Good Morning, DeVeria. I have those thoughts, too, when I look at babies now. I get this sadness of them beginning their lives in the state of the world, now, and wonder what the future holds for them. I also get this feeling of guilt at the world we’re leaving them. The U.S. doesn’t seem to be to oriented towards kids anymore and I don’t know when exactly that happened. I think many of the ills of today would have been circumvented if the kids were kept in mind: the environment, schools, peaceful means of solving problems, etc….
Thanks for the welcome. Rashad has stolen my heart quickly. I’m away this weekend and I can’t wait to get back to him! So your grandson is two? Busy, busy, busy
Breaking Microsoft General Electric News: Dave Letterman dated an intern! I bet they had a good time.
G’morning. My point exactly. Right now in my church my bishop has started a campaign so to speak to focus on our youth and leave them a legacy of which they can be proud. They are our future. And sometimes i think we don’t consider that.
Add some poppy and sesame seeds!
Rashad is as cute as a button! So cute. :-)
I’m happy to meet you, DeVeria. Rashad looks like a joy to be around.
We have a beautiful morning here in North Florida. The hot weather has finally broken and it’s still a crisp 64 degrees at 9 am.
Island Pork Tenderloin from Epicurious is one of my favorite dishes for entertaining. If you make just the pork, it’s almost no work at all, but tastes and looks like something really special. If you put the salad together as well, it’s spectacular. The first time I made it, I accidentally got blood oranges instead of regular and the color was fantastic in the salad.
Why thank you! I am definitely a proud godmother!
Yum! I’m going to have fun trying all of these new dishes. You know I’m going to have to sample them for myself before I make them for anybody else. Better watch it…can’t add any more lbs!
Congratulations! What will you be doing?
If President Obama and the Democrats can get health care reform on track in this country, then I believe our nation going forward will be better off. If small businesses and poor/middle class individuals (both make up the majority of our population) have more money in their pockets each week, this will strengthen our economy.
Tee hee! I drive my wife crazy because I love to try new dishes for the first time with company coming. No disasters from that approach yet, but she does worry.
Definitely
Now see, I’m a pretty good cook, but I’d be scared of that one forgotten ingredient…
Bet that would be good with eCAHN’s potato and apple dish.
Well, a captive audience is one way to get reviews on a dish… Have many become family favorites?
I was thinking the same thing…
Good morning DeVeria from rainy chilly NW Indiana. (*and a little wave to Christy if she peeks in!*) What an adorable little guy you have there!! We will all enjoy watching him grow, so please post lots of pics!!
This weekend I have to bring in all of my big house plants that have spent the summer on the deck. We had an overnight frost a few days ago so they are now crowded onto the screened porch, waiting for a good spraying of Orthenex to (hopefully) divest them of critters. Bringing in the plants is always a sort of sad ritual because it signals clearly that summer is OVER. And I always worry a little that something has burrowed in the soil and will pop out when the plants come in!
What a cutie!
Meanwhile. . .It’s Rainer Werner Fassbinder Day at Dennis Cooper’s
NPR/Dan Schorr this morning seemed to be anticipating that a bill will pass with some form of public option…it was early. I think that’s what he said….Good Morning. Grey here & s’posed to be rainy for the weekend.
Thanks…I am always snapping pictures. I’m about to invest in a camcorder to catch all of his new experiences…nobody seems to believe we sing together!
One day, I hope to be able to do better with plants and flowers because I love them. Unfortunately, I truly don’t have a green thumb.
some form… I just don’t understand why this has to be such a debatable topic. Its needed…just do it.
yep…how sane! Welcome….that’s a beautiful kid.
Why thank you…

Those bloodhounds over at TPM have been investigatin’
“The American Police Force” who have taken over Hardin Montana. They may have found a connection to Black/Xe. I am shocked that the New World Order starts in Montana.
I was just over at ThinkProgress watching the conservatives cheer over the U.S. losing the Olympics. Really, WTF?
DeVeria, Rashad is such a beautiful baby! I would find it hard to get work done around him.
Here’s one of my favorite recipes.
Baked Onions
Peel and cut in half enough onions to pack the bottom of a buttered glass casserole with a tight cover.
Sprinkle onions with herb salt (or plain salt) and black pepper.
Cover onions with fresh milk. Put on the cover and bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. The milk will evaporate and thicken and a wonderful sweetness will develop because of the concentrated onion and milk flavors.
see, how crazy is that?
Its hard sometimes, but he knows godmommy has plenty of folks counting on her to keep things straight, so he works along with me. And, when it gets to be too overwhelming, I have had good help and that makes all the difference.
I’ve never had baked onions, but it sounds good. Do you fix it as an appetizer?
Americans for Prosperity crowd. I think the folks in Chicago who are more aware of the city’s financial straits were cheering even more heartily. The city has pled poverty when its come to social programs and infrastructure improvements but didn’t have a problem being able to come up with $500M for the Olympics. The city has already spent $50M just for the bidding process. Daley’s no better than his old man.
Good Saturday Morning DeVeria and all Pups
Greetings from beautiful Santa Barbara. 9 hours and counting until the big ceremony. We’ve been having a blast. There are folks in from as far away as Florida. It’s been one big party ever since Thursday evening. Because my daughter lives in DC, This was my first meeting with all her “girls”. I’ve heard so much about them, I felt like I already knew them, but all the face to face gabbing has been super. It’s a good thing I’m such a yakker, because being the MOB, there’s a certain responsibility to make all the out of town guests feel welcome. Everything is working perfectly well. Yay.
Not only are there problems for the economy and the re-location of neighborhoods to build Olympic facilities, but I read that a key element of no Olympics in the US was our notorious denial of entrance to foreigners due to 9-11 restrictions.
I wonder what the red-staters think of that?
$50M just to bid???
Enjoy every moment and don’t forget to share the details!
PS, GM to DeVeria and all. Margot, I will try the baked onions one of these days. That sounds fab!
Going out to find some coffee. I’ve never had a decent in-the-hotel-room cup anywhere. Maybe the management Wants me to go buy breakfast in their over priced restaurant.
PS, I have to admit that I haven’t missed following any politics for the last couple of days.
Demi, Fantastic. I had been wondering about you folks, so happy to hear all is wellllll….here’s the toast to all.
Good Morning DeVeria and Firedogs,
damn! missed the thread. heck with recipes, I’ve found something that makes me a Shower Goddess and anyone (including the crafts challenged!) with a glue gun and some rubber bands can make a big splash and provide a welcomed gift:
Diaper Cakes !
this was the shortest youtube, just so you get an idea of how easy it is – this was sooo not my thing, but a young woman close to me really wanted one so I went from there. If you’re interested there’s a ton of youtubes and instructions. and you can shove all kinds of cutesy baby stuff within the dipes so the parents find little goodies as they go through them (ya know, baby clippers, wash cloths, or a good bottle of scotch :D)
you can get more ideas here
Who knows really…but cheering a slap to the Pres, dontcha’ think?
Yeow ! the big week end is upon us ?!?!? dahlin’ have a great time am so excited for (((ya)))
G’morning! They do sound good, don’t they?
That’s what they want, but I’m not giving in…there is a Starbucks right up the street!
Morning Ms. DeVeria-
You said the magic words recipe. I love planning events.
Here are some suggestions.
pasta, I make wondeful pastas, I also make a terrific green lasagna, it’s an eye crosser it’s so delicious.
A brisket is easy to do.
I also make an evil chocolate Mousse.
Pizza is fun, and Whole Foods has excellent dough which you can easily bake smother with cheese, etc.
Just found a new delicious recipe, a soba noodles salad with spinach, yummy!
OMG, so much more, let us know what direction you want to go.
Now that is soooo neat! I hope you all help me to remember this stuff when I tell you I’m having a shower…lol
Aw, thanks, Bev. I’m so glad everything is running smoothly. I can see how things could get sticky, and there have been, let’s just call them, opportunities for problems, but I’m keeping calm and letting the small things just blow away. I want this whole time to be a perfect memory for my daughter. I was chatting with the bartender yesterday afternoon, and she was telling me some great wedding disaster stories. Some where things got so tense, some members of the family skipped the ceremony and went straight to the reception. Yikes.
Wow! Remind me to get you down here, when I’m ready to have my social!
Well, don’t you worry about all that. You are going to have a perfect day!
Yep. Even the fact that my exhusband’s girlfriend hates me is not a problem. Just wait until I drag him onto the dance floor tonight. That should be interesting.
wow, that’s quite the evolution from those little washcloth bunnies!
I don’t remember if it was on my community radio news or DN! but that was the figure reported the city spent on the process. The wealthy help put it on and the well-to-do are the only ones who can afford to attend. DN! had a scathing report on the behind the scenes stuff that goes on with the IOC officials.
Cities that have hosted Olympic events are famous for destroying the financial records leading up to the games. Nagano burned theirs.
If it’s any solace, I’ve never been to a disasterized wedding, nor heard of one personally.
May the sun shine and the Bride smile all the day long (and the Mother of the Bride, as well)
Well, lady….have a ball in your fantastic “dress”
Now that’s funny…make sure you pick the perfect song and even if you aren’t enjoying it, look like you are having the time of your life! Oops, thats the other side of DeVeria, you all aren’t supposed to see.
DeVeria,
PS, My daughter’s Maid of Honor, Priya, could be your sister! Strong resemblance. Gorgeous dark skin and pretty, big eyes.
wow
Really? You never know…my father only claims two of us though, and my sister is only 14.
Well, she does live in DC. I’ll find out her last name.
cool, i have a lot of family here, but I’m originally from Hampton, VA.
Must. Find. Coffee. Later gators.
And thanks for all be well wishes, my dear friends.
Enjoy!
Democracy Now! segment yesterday.
Now that’s something. I hadn’t thought of the huge economical impact it would bring.
“Working moms and dads, how do you do it?”
Are you kidding me? I was a working mom, 25 years ago. First to one child, then two, then three (in 4 years!). While on maternity leave, then a small time between jobs, I was a stay-at-home mother. And let me tell you from experience, staying home with babies/children is much harder. I often said I was glad to get back to work so I could get some rest. And yes, I had a rather stressful job. But compared to being a stay-at-home mother? Piece of cake!
By the way, is that picture of you and your baby? That baby is SO CUTE! You will have your hands REALLY full when he can walk (and run). I can see the mischief in his eyes already! LOL
Demi, it has been fun hearing about your MOB / wedding activities. Now what will be on your mind? lol bet it will feel good not to have to worry about details like you have to when MOB. It will go off like a dream, the weather looks good, enjoy!
The west coast contingent here just tuning in. DeVeria, if you are still online, was thinkng GodMommy must be sort of like Grandmommy, you get to enjoy to the max then give back to Mom and go off with a smile.?? That part will come later — new baby just fun and sweetness, older baby is fun but more intense and the handing back is sometimes a huge relief!! But babies are the best fun in the world and need every adult possible cooing and caring for them. You are right, it is a difficult world to bring children into, and even though they have been saying that for a couple thousand years, it seems truer now somehow. May Rashad live long in a world in which peace and sanity have becomr the norm.
Thanks! Rashad is my godchild. I guess that is one way to look at it about working. Maybe I would feel differently if I had him all the time…I just have him in the afternoons and early evenings four days a week. I am sure that he is going to be a handful…he is spoiled already at five weeks old!
Want to welcome DeVeria too. I’ve enjoyed your posts and look forward to many more on FDL.
I also join you in prayer for this country, that it comes out a shining beacon once again, for future generations to come.
Peace.
I so enjoy having him like I do. At the end of the day, depending what is on docket, it is a sigh of relief when he goes home…but then I miss him when he is gone. I am constantly praying for the future of our youth. They deserve to have a chance for a happy and successful life.
Thanks for the welcome and the support. Everybody has been wonderful and I’m having a lot of fun!
Greetings Ms. Flowers,
I’ve just registered but I’ve been reading the site for about a year now. I’m a grizzled old ex-hippy who has been blessed with a great-grandson [he’s 15 months now]. What a shear joy it is to have a baby in your life. I congratulate you on your beautiful child and wish you the very best.
Thanks! I’m enjoying every minute!
