Meet and Greet with DeVeria:
Good morning everybody! This is our first Saturday together and I am anxious to get to know everyone. We will miss Christy greatly, but we are going to do all we can to get her to stop by and check in on us, right? So, we must keep things up and running in the meantime. She taught us well….
Now, let’s have our morning coffee (or in my case chai tea) and get to know each other a little better.
So, you say who is DeVeria and how is she a part of our FDL family?
Well, I met Jane two years ago and my life has not been the same since! What do I do? Hmmm….let’s see, I was hired to handle the books, but…..I seem to find myself in every possible corner that you can imagine.
What do I do for a living? I’m an accountant by trade, but I do everything from putting stuff together, managing, to the overall organization of things.
Unlike Christy, I am not married. But, there is a special someone, but he’ll remain nameless until he is ready to become Mr. DeVeria, how’s that? I don’t have any natural children yet (still waiting on Mr. DeVeria), but I do have a brand new godson, Rashad. He was 1 month on yesterday and has become the light of my world.
I never knew little people were so much work, but I’m enjoying every minute. I watch him a few days a week while his mother is in school.
Well, that’s enough about me! I’d like to get to know you…how did you come to the Lake…
While you are introducing yourselves, tell me some things you would like us to talk about over the next few weeks while we are still getting to know each other.
I’m listening….

Greetings DeVeria! Nice to meet you.
While I had been reading posts here since the Haloscan days, I jumped into comments while we were all waiting for emptywheel’s next update. Been here ever since.
Good morning everyone. It’s a little cloudy outside this Saturday morning, but I’m imagining myself on that beach watching the sun rise over the horizon…ahhhh, that’s better.
DeVeria, Good Morning, thank you for the tea and I look forward to spending many, many, Saturday mornings with you.
Hi Elliott! Keep on jumping in…
Nice to meet you, DeVeria.
Like Elliot, been here forever.
PUAC, a wonderful Saturday morning tradition.
You are very welcome! A nice cup of chai tea hits the spot every time! I’ll be here every week…stop on by!
It’s nice to meet some veterans. I think it is a great way to kick off the weekend, don’t you?
Good morning, Ms. DeVeria!
Let me begin this very special Saturday morning chat with DeVeria. I have had the huge pleasure and honor to get to know this remarkable woman, and she is waaaay too modest.
DeVeria is the backbone, the center, and the sun and the stars of Firedoglake.
I just left Casa Hamsher late yesterday, and as always Deveria was there making sure the trains run on time. DeVeria is command central of the FDL operation, and her presence gives Jane the peace of mind to be able to sit in front of her computer about 19 hours a day and do what only Jane Hamsher can do, expose the filth and corruption in our political system.
DeVeria and Jane are amazing women and I’m honored to call them both friends and be a part of this extraordinary team.
What an honor!
Hi, DeVeria! I usually show up early in the morning with coffee, tea and breakfast for folks (banana pancakes this morning, dig in…) and information on what the columnists in the New York Times are up to. (Now that they’ve taken down their fire wall there are still people who don’t want to give them traffic.)
As to what to talk about, it seems that when the seasons turn there’s usually a thread that winds up being about trading recipes, even if it didn’t start out in that direction. Fall to me means “cozier” food, and of course I’m thinking about which cookies to bake for Christmas this year…
Glad to “meet” you!
Deveria, where’s Christy going? What time is the baby shower?
hello deveria, I’m perris, resident loud mouth and over all pain the butt, been called irreverant so pay no mind to perris
welcome
Welcome, DeVeria.
Hmmmm, I don’t remember how I found this site, but it’s the reason I’m still sane. It was during the Bush debacle and I was spending all my time ranting about the damage he was doing. Unfortunately, except for a few, my rants were aimed at people that didn’t care. My frustration level was rising, I kept screaming “You need to pay attention” but I couldn’t find enough people that gave a damn. Then I found the lake and I realized I wasn’t alone.
But, that’s just part of the reason I come here. The real value is the information you get here that you can’t get from the MSM. There are some brilliant, well-informed bloggers at FDL that give me insight that I would never gain from the networks. And, finally, there’s PUAC. A wonderful idea that allows us to get to know each other.
Mornin’ Deveria.
I started reading FDL back around ‘05 but jumped into the comments just after the Libby trial times. IIRC, my first comment (or at least most likely) was to offer a small correction to a statement made by others. (My career field is Software Quality Assurance so I have this inclination to try to get things correct. A former manager told me I was “Anal in a positive way” since I wasn’t trying purposefully to be a PITA, the PITA status just came along with the desire to get it correct). :})
Wow, thanks Eve. We are definitely a family here and we all come together to do what we have to do to make things work. We push hard to do what we do and to ultimately make a difference and a positive change in our readers’ lives. Thanks for your support and being a part of that team!
Hey there DeVeria!
I wish FDL was as angry as I am about what happened to the students in Pittsburgh. When you look at the vid clips it looks just like Iran after the elections. I can’t believe this is happening in my country. My kid was planning on going to school in Pittsburgh, but now she says she won’t go there. Are we turning into a police state? How can we let this happen? We need a strong progressive voice to bring this to the surface. I was on a two-day photo shoot in Wyoming where you can’t even get cell phone service let alone an internet connection. When I came home my family was all up in arms about the video clips they saw. It was like I came back to civilization only to find we were living in Orwellian society. All FDL wants to cover right now is healthcare reform. That’s great, and FDL has really made a difference in the debate… but, who cares about healthcare in this country if our brightest and best youth don’t even have the right to gather in a public forum during the G-20? These kids were in their own residencies, on campus, a place they shouldn’t have to worry about the police beating and teargassing them. These young people need to have some kind of support from us old hippies who remember Kent State. Why isn’t FDL talking about this?
Something needs to be done, said, and people need to be held responsible! See for yourself at the attached link.
http://www.indypgh.org/g20/#k-fbd79b0e2ce5faae
Sorry to harsh you, I’m out.
Good morning. My name and my pseudonym are the same, both being Margaret. I’m a 49 year old, currently unemployed cancer researcher with a passion for cooking and folk music. Yes, it’s true, I’m one of those dirty f*cking hippies you hear about but these days I’m only able to indulge my inner hippie a couple of times a year. I’m from and live in central Texas but don’t let that fool you, the place I live is extremely liberal just like myself. Welcome aboard DeVeria! :-)
Morning DeVeria and crew. Hey Eve — I’m taking a break because I’m having increased issues with my lupus and needed to reduce my load for a bit.
I started at FDL because Jane and I were obsessed with the bad journalism being done about the Plame leak and ran into each other griping about it in a DKos thread. Next thing you know, we were e-mailing, and then talking on the phone for hours and then…several years of writing later, here I am.
DeVeria, thanks so much for doing PUAC…and congrats on the godson! Enjoy the tiny sleep on your shoulder phase while you can — they grow up way, way too fast. (The Peanut and Mr. ReddHedd are watching Star Wars here at the moment.)
Hi Marion! Nice to “meet” you too! Banana pancakes…mmm good…goes perfectly with my chai tea.
You are right about the cozier food of the fall. Can’t wait! Ummm, don’t forget to share those Christmas cookies!
Christy is taking some time to get some health issues together, but we all know she will be perfectly fine. The shower is later this afternoon…can’t wait!
Oh yeah. I spent years lurking around FDL before starting to comment. I spent those years commenting at another blog prior to discovering what kind of person that blog owner was. I’ve been spending my Staurday mornings recently here.
Single male professional seeking like minded politically active women with wit, intelligence, beauty—hey wait a minute—-you already have a significant other? Oh nevermind.
Pecan Sandies here. Can’t wait to get started. The secret is to use last year’s pecans.
Hi Perris! It’s all good…someone has to say what others are afraid to, right. :)
I wish someday, Jane would write a piece and say, I’m throwing open the doors of casa Hamsher to one and all, so everyone can meet Deveria, me (Jane), see command central, and meet everyone else who makes this historic site hum and run so seamlessly every single day.
And of course the most important reason to invite the world is make the acquaintance of the true rulers of FDL, Kobe, Lucy and Katie!
Good morning, DeVeria and welcome to the front page.
Found FDL during the Libby trail, jumped into the comments pretty quickly. I’d posted a few comments on other sites with unsatisfactory results. (One interchange where the site owner and a couple of her compatriots jumped down my throat because of my irreligious views. Most occassions, my comments were posted in a seeming vacuum.) At FDL, by contrast, the comment section is most often a really good conversation.
As for PUAC, books, food, nature, and just whatever you’re interested in at the moment.
Yes, it is nice to have a community where we can vent our frustrations and celebrate our victories. The information given is well-informed and well-researched…and then we get to talk about it!
*waving to Christy*
I knew we’d catch you peeking in. Hope you are well, or at least better.
This past week, Howard Dean came to Knoxville and spoke to a full house in Cox Auditorium at the University of Tennessee. He spoke eloquently on several topics, including why wedge issues won’t be working for Republicans anymore, why we need REAL health care reform, and why, if something like the Baucus bill is the best we can get, the best thing to do would be to strip all the funding out of it and call it an insurance regulation bill rather than a health care reform bill.
He also most effectively shut down two moronic hecklers. I’m not sure which impressed me more: the way he responded to them, indirectly pointing out the bankruptcy of their loud emoting (as neither was not willing to get in line and speak at the microphone during Q&A), or the way the large audience of Tennesseans showed that the lunatic ranting and raving like we saw happening at town hall meetings in August is just not going to be tolerated anymore.
In addition to contributing at ActBlue for the ad to tell Arkansas Sen Blanche Lincoln and Rep Mike Ross to stop doing the bidding of the insurance companies, I also sent letters to Lincoln and Ross.
Here’s the letter I faxed and mailed to Ross yesterday:
U.S. Congressman Mike Ross
Re: Health Care Reform
2436 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Fax: (202) 225-1314
September 25, 2009
Congressman Ross,
I am writing to let you know that Democrats like me across the country are unhappy about your opposition to REAL health care reform.
I stand with the Democrats of Arkansas, the majority of whom want REAL health care reform. I recently made a contribution to ActBlue so that they can run their ad to tell Sen. Blanche Lincoln and you to stop blocking the PUBLIC HEALTH INSURANCE OPTION, an ad that most of the people of Arkansas – and all of the people in your district – will see over and over again for two weeks on prime time network television.
Congressman, after decades of letting private sector interests create huge problems in our health care system, we need REAL reform.
THIS REFORM – OR FAILURE OF REAL REFORM – WILL AFFECT US FOR DECADES TO COME.
Please stop, think about what you are doing, and start putting the interests of the people of our country first.
But if you can’t, please know that as a result of your failure to represent your constituents well and to work for their interests, that as a result of your failure to put Americans before profits or your own interests, Democrats across the country will work hard to replace you as a member of the House of Representatives and to end your career as a Democrat.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
BRC
Well, sadly, this is gonna be quick and maybe another day I can spend more time, welcome, DeVeria and everyone, I’m on the way to a rock show – the kind where you find fossils and other stuff like me. I am a recent arrival, always been a little awed by the amount of content and not wanting not to know Everything there is to know, fnally hopped in and found the water warm and soothing. thanks. Now gotta get to rocking.
Hey there Christy. Check back around Thanksgiving and I’ll share a great cookie recipe’ with my fellow FDLers.
Hi Dakine! I can relate to being anal…ask anyone around me, I want everything right and “just so”. Nothing wrong with that is there? I guess it depends on who you ask…
Any thoughts about John Podesta lowering expectations for the upcoming Copenhagen conference? Seems like Obama is morphing into the Democratic version of Herbert Hoover only with a rhetorical flourish.
I feel your passion. I’ll pass it along…
I actually discovered the trait in myself when I was in the USAF working in accounting and finance. It can be rather soothing knowing that at the end of the column of figures, all the amounts tallied up and the various actions and accounts match
Good morning Margaret. Thanks for the welcome. I’ll be looking for some recipes!
Hi Christy! I knew you would stop by! Oh, I am so enjoying him! I am cherishing every moment…I guess I am finally ready. Have fun with the family!
Hi DeVeria! So glad you’re here and welcome!
I just wanted to stop by and welcome you. I’m off to a film festival where a film I’m a co-producer off is debuting. It’s called Bingo Confidential and I’ll be by on Saturdays to join the conversation.
JayT here? He loves the recipe PUAC’s.
Seems to me like all of the people surrounding Obama spend most of their time lowering expectations, so much in fact, that it must be a strategy. Between that and the ongoing cave in to the Republicans in the Baucus bunch, it’s no suprise that Democratic fundraising is down. I can’t for the life of me figure out why Democrats can’t seem to assimilate the fact that looking weak and pretending to be Republican lite is not a winning strategy. It’s most of the reason why, though I haven’t voted for any Republicans in twenty years, I’ve never officially been a card carrying Democrat.
Well we are glad to have you join our family, Margaret. We definitely want your comments and as for Saturday morning, you wouldn’t leave me here by myself, now would you? :)
By and large there really is only one political party in the U.S.. Most elected politicians that call themselves “Democrats” would seem to be in fact Eisenhower Republicans without the integrity.
Now Bluetoe, no getting fresh so early on a Saturday! Nice to meet you…please continue to keep me company on my Saturday mornings.
Oh No, Christy, I had no idea you were dealing with such a difficult situation. I knew someone many years ago who had lupus, I hope the treatment has gotten better.
Maybe you can come around from time to time and let us know how you’re doing. My God, what does an uninsured American do, with such a diagnosis? People ask me all the time, about what uninsured Americans do who receive a difficult medical diagnosis, and I truly don’t know how they cope. I suppose there is a terrible patchwork of places (and Charities, thank you scumbag Eric Cantor), that help out.
And I hope people will understand my last comment, but as a Jew I must say, the following. Monday is Yom Kippur, it’s known as the day of Atonement, when a Jew asks God for forgiveness. Mr. Cantor (who is Jewish), bend on your knees, you soulless miserable bastard, and pray to the Almighty for your sins and for forgiveness.
Wow…good to know. I have never had any homeade pecan sandies. You’ve got to share that one. I’ll have to experiment on someone…hmmmm.
The thing that bothers me most about the conservadems, (as Rachel Maddow so eloquently calls them), is that they could raise many times the money they are getting from insurance company lobbyists and flacks through private donations if they just stood up for their constituents and for progressive principles. Didn’t Obama prove that during his run for the presidency? People like Rahm Emanuel aren’t going to be happy until we are once again outside looking in and you can bet your retirement that the Republicans will be just as “bipartisan” as they were during the Bush years, when Demcrats weren’t even allowed space in the Captol building to meet.
Everybody? Well, I’d have to find some more chairs… :)
Sounds good. There is going to be very few times where everyone agrees. We can just agree to disagree, right? No problems here…
Going to start my Saturday everybody. Have a collective great day. :-)
Now that’s what I call really doing your part to make a difference. Now if the rest of us, would do that, we’d be able to get where we are trying to go quickly.
Good Morning DeVeria,
Glad to have you step into Christy’s very big shoes(that’s a compliment Christy and not a comment on your feet) for a while. I have been around the lake since it first appeared and still open my big mouth every once in a while. Look forward to spending some time with you on Saturday mornings. I live in the Northern Atlanta burbs(Roswell) but like Christy I am originally a mountain mama’s boy. I’ll kick in a recipe or two when the mood strikes and even though I may not always chip in I’m here.
Hi DeVeria,
I want to say welcome as if I owned the place. I don’t know what provokes that feeling, but there it is, pride of ownership even while mostly lurking. Everyone up here takes good care of the lake, pulls weeds, cleans the fish house, keeps it neat for guests.
A minor PITA I specialize in being correct, told everyone I met a few years ago to look at this FDL thing, it’s amazing and going to be really big.
Joel
A beautiful, bright 22yr old girl just died from Swine flu because she didn’t have health insurance. She didn’t go to the doctor in time because of the cost. By the time her room mate drove her to the hospital she was in critical condition. They air lifted her to a hospital where she died.
So, besides the fact that this woman died, the cost to treat her was probably 1000x what a Doctor’s appt and an Rx would have cost.
I’m hoping she becomes the poster girl for reform.
Morning DeVeria. Nice to get to know you. I have been around for nearly a year and a half since I delurked. I was tired of wading around with my jeans rolled up all of the time. Found this to be a place where sanity rules.
There’s a fair amount of agreement here because of natural selection of those who choose the site. But we’ve also had some lively disagreements, and those are often the better learning experiences.
Now that sounds interesting. Enjoy the rock show and thanks for stopping in to say hello. I look forward to “hearing” from you soon.
I will share a family recipe’ that has been around since before the United States was called the United States. From Louisiana French colony days. :-)
In all seriousness, welcome to the Lake. A collection of real Americans of intelligence and passion hoping and working for a better world. Looking forward to spending a bit of my Saturday morning with you.
DeVeria is a stickler for details, and making sure those pesky columns add up, trust me on this. No pun intended, but when it comes to accounting, Deveria is a true “by the books” lady.
Now that’s what I live for…
Hey there!
from Athens ga!
watch it! :)
Thanks solai, someone emailed me news of this catastrophe. I truly don’t know how to respond to it. The political class will live for eternity in damnation for allowing this catastrophe to go unremedied for so long.
I’m waiting to learn something from you this morning. Hurry up & teach me. :>)
Yes and why should we have to lower our expectations…are we really expecting too much?
Seems that way these days…
A beautiful, bright 22yr old girl just died
Pardon my PITAism, Solai, but what’s the gratuitous description for? Is the death of a not bright, not beautiful girl caused by our system any less a tragedy?
Good morning. It’s nice to meet you, DeVeria.
I retired from the FAA in Jan/07 and heard Marcy on C-Span with her book about a month later. I liked what she said, she mentioned FDL, and I dropped in to see what it was about. I’ve been reading and sometimes commenting since, usually in the mornings. Some of the discussions do get a little heated and I’ve always enjoyed PUAC, because it does allow us to sit back and reassert that not everyone who disagrees with us is a numbskull and honest people can honestly disagree.
Now Eve…that’s not nice. How can someone with no soul pray for forgiveness?
Lucy was barking like crazy this morning and finally woke me up. “Mom you overslept!”
We’re here now with DeVeria. What she hasn’t told you yet is that she runs the place and we just live here. And that we miss Eve (who left yesterday) already.
Have a great one! See you soon
You may be right. But when it’s a young person, it’s more tragic. As for the bright and beautiful, I apologize for that.
You know, I have to go back and look up who it was who connected us. After all these years I need to thank them.
OK. Coffee’s gone. Sun is out. Though it’s chilly, it’s a perfect day to work in the back 40.
BBL. Be well everyone.
I was thinking that he needs to call Stephen Colbert.
Great to know. One of my very best friends is in Atlanta. I’m planning to come down there in a few months for her baby’s christening. I had a ball the last time I was there…nice city.
I don’t remember whose diary it was, either — might have been Marcy’s, come to think of it. *g*
I need to make one more comment about Ms. Deveria. About two months ago, when I was at Casa Hamsher for one or another of our projects, DeVeria noticed that I was using AOL as my email.
So this very busy woman said to me. “Eve, I’d be happy to show you how to use Gmail, it will make your life way easier”.
Of course I was reluctant to change my antique AOL way of doing things. But DeVeria told me not to worry, she’d walk me through all the bells and whistles of Gmail. She proceeded to literally pull up a chair, and gave me about an hour course in the wonders of Gmail. Now, thanks to DeVeria, my life is changed. She was totally correct, Gmail is the way to go.
Well thank you Joel. We are a proud family, aren’t we.
Hey Millineryman, how are you?
Getting cool around here, going to be wearing my hat again soon. (DeVeria, Millineryman made me the beautiful red hat that I wear all the time when my hair fell out!)
The movie sounds great. Have you mentioned it to Lisa?
Well when it comes to the right to healthcare, there is zero nuance for me. I am incapable of seeing how a man like Eric Cantor can ask for forgiveness one day, on Yom Kippur, and the next day, continue to conduct business as usual. I am unable to process these concepts. Sorry. Don’t know how to do it.
This is exactly why we are fighting so hard for healthcare. Noone in this country should have to die because they could not afford to go to the doctor. How sad is that?
One day we are going to get Eve to keep a gchat woman open. Shhhh, don’t tell her.
I think you missed DeVeria’s snark.
DeVeria, that was snark!
Sanity in the midst of an insane world…
can’t wait!
Good Morning DeVeria, Nice to meet you. Its 9:20am in the Midwest. cloudy and chilly. But Autumn is beautiful!
Welcome!
Thanks!
I remember comming here from someone’s blog also, I was desperate to find out more about the plame leak and there was this cute little blog that had halo scan and everything
had a ball back then, watching the site grow was great too, it was very excfiting each time we found out we needed more band width and better servers
I remember the day we found out joe wilson visited when in an interview he said it was among his favorite blogs
we sort of had an unspoken contest trying to bring him out and post
then when we found out he was going to be featured top page we went nutzo
Hi Raven…Happy Saturday!
Jeepers!
You must have had too much coffee this morning.
Hello. Yes we can disagree without being horribly disagreeable or disrespectful. That’s what great about being here at the Lake.
Lucy is always the one! I just do what I do..
Oh Jane, I miss you too, you’re my second family.
I wish someday (soon) you’d post a photo of you hard at work with the three poodles curled up around you. There’s plenty of room for them to wander, but they’re always right there at Jane’s side, so if she moves her chair even an inch, she’s bound to bump into one of them. These three really run the place.
What’s that cute old saying, “It’s Kobe’s (Lucy)(Katie’s) world, I just live in it!”
Perris is an old timer. He’s about 47 in blog years.
Great hat, Millineryman!
Thanks Solai,
I forgot to mention by way of intro this morning that I am a part time corporal with the sexism police. We are looking for a few more good men.
Thanks for the opportunity to issue a warning ticket, I’m not making my quota lately.
I remember writing an email to you and you linked to an early blog I tried starting up
it was “the judas sheep
man that was embarrasing cuz I did such a bad job with grammar and it was so badly written
good times, good times
Hmmm…one step at a time…next lesson. :)
Fixed it, Corporal.
I absolutely love the fall and the spring. My favorite times of the year!
Thanks for the welcome!
Yes, what gorgeous weather, love it!
Welcome!
I just found out about Christy, I’ve been away from my computer.
Please keep our Sat. morning get together going. Winter is coming and I will need company and people to commiserate with!
Well it used to be DeVeria’s world, we just lived in it, but now I think Rashad rules the roost. He is DeVeria’s godson and he really lights the place up. But there’s no question when he’s here who is the boss.
We all get completely stupid cooing over him:
http://firedoglake.com/files/1…..rashad.jpg
Hi DeVeria! I just registered yesterday, so am very new to this site. Sounds like you’ve known Jane for a while. I haven’t met her yet.
I hope my letter to Rep Ross will not be the only one he receives! I’m learning more about Rep Cooper (TN-5) and hope to have a letter to send to him soon. Wondering if a tv ad like the one for Lincoln and Ross, one that informs the people of Nashville that an effort to find a primary challenger is underway, would be effective. If his constituents get involved in the process of finding a replacement, it might produce REAL results!
Your post was great.
Hiya, DeVeria and all of my Saturday morning friends. I came to FDL by following a link from another blog – forget which – and just stayed. Now FDL is part of my daily life. I arrived after the Libby trial, so I missed all of that, unfortunately. I read a lot but don’t comment too much. I live in NW Indiana and had up close exposure to the Obama Notre Dame commencement brouhaha.
Hey perris, I haven’t read the thread yet and I probably won’t until later because of pressing errands. Have you live blogged your Panera breakfast yet?? We have to intro DeVeria to that tradition! LOL.
Hi jane and DeVeria, I understood, just my caffeine induced Saturday morning rant! May even do a bit of research on Eric Cantor and where he worships (if he worships), and write a diary about this.
We have definitely grown since I’ve been on board and continuing to do so. And we are not trying to stop!
Mornin’, DeVeria, and welcome.
Like Elliott I’ve been around since the Haloscan days but I can’t remember whether I found the place via emptywheel or vice versa. Oh, well…
Late this morning. Going to table for our community radio station, WMNF, at the St Petersburg Folk Fest and had lots of things to do before I head out. Taking care of a house full of tigers is worse than kids sometimes.
I was campaign treasurer for Samm Simpson’s 2 runs at Congress from FL-10 in 06 and 08. She lost, obviously, but I sure learned a lot about campaign finance. I’m a programmer by training but a bookkeeper by necessity. I’d say I’m prolly about as far to the left as anyone here.
It has already snowed nearby. 10 inches in a nearby community.
Glad to know you are in Knoxville to balance out Glen Reynolds.
Here’s the post on the swine flu victim.
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/…..nstituent/
Isn’t it amazing how a place like FDL quickly becomes a part of your life. How Jane and DeVeria have become a huge part of my life.
Hi DeVeria – I heard about The Lake from Joel Achenbach http://voices.washingtonpost.com/achenblog/ before the Libby trial.
We will be right here!
what a doll!
You are so lucky DeVeria
C: I was going to note how much I miss you…your heart and your smarts. Li’l snarky in a good way. I was away last week, so I am glad you’re back to say a few words.
Welcome to DeVeria….I’m so tired I’m stunned, so more later. Plus, I just heard Nader on his new book and on a bit of how we got this way with a good summary about the stolen 2000…talk about a heartbreak. The book sounds interesting.
Oh, haloscan. I remember when half our job was moderating the comments.
Let us all have a moment of thanks for the fabulous moderators.
That’s my baby! Can’t wait to see him later…
Good Morning DeVeria
came to FDL about a month before Katrina. the late great Steve Gilliard posted a quintessential Jane quote and I just to had hear what else she had to say . as others have noted, it has been thrilling to watch this site and it’s influence grow. actually got a little verklempt watching that Rachel clip last night – ah yes, the little blog that could
you must be really something if Kobe has kept you under wraps all this time – am so looking forward to getting to know you
Welcome dahlin’ !
Hi, DeVeria.
You’re very friendly.
Look forward to your posts.
(I believe the whole political system is broken and corrupted and needs to be jettisoned.)
A friend of mine was on a panel with Nader recently. Asked him if he was going to apologize to the American people for taking money from the GOP and acting as a spoiler in the 2000 election. The audience stood up and cheered but Nader was unmoved.
I’ll never forgive him.
Well welcome to the Lake! We all need to do all we can at this point…
Did I hear that Nader has moved into fiction lately?
I didn’t comment, or even register, for quite a while. Don’t do well at public speaking. *g* Something popped up to break me out of lurker status but damned if I know what it was. Haven’t shut up since.
Well it’s nice to meet you…stick around…we are just getting started.
Thanks Solai,
It was a play on an old military recruiting slogan. Also I believe that just as it was and is so important for white people to push back against racism, more men need to take up the push against sexism. It’s really our job, just as it is white peoples job.
Thanks solai. I’ll gird myself and read it.
Now CNN is doing a segment on unisnured Americans going abroad for lifesaving procedures. They just said, that there are Americans who need say a bypass and are told it will cost $150,000, can you pay or not? Yes or no? If yes, we’ll treat you, if no, please leave.
What is wrong with this country. Jane is so Goddamn correct, we need to primary every one of these bastards who vote against the American people. And they are bastards, or worse.
I got a little verklempt too. If you could see how hard people around here work — every person is doing the work of 10 people and working around the clock. DeVeria this morning is in the same spot she was at 2am. She was on the phone last night with the lawyers, exchanging emails into the night, trying to deal with the tax status of a project we’re launching next week.
“Moved?”
I love him soooo much. I am so blessed to have him in my life now. I want the best for him and I pray this world is in a better place than we are now when he gets to be our age. Some things that some of us are having to go through like the unavailability or affordability of health care is something I never want him to go through.
how ya doing firedog ? loved your painting with light pics
Good point
Thanks. I’m going to have to check it out.
I’ve asked this question before, but never when you’ve been here. Why aren’t the progressive blogs using their reach and influence to organize a march in DC?
I miss Steve. I still remember the last time I saw him, we had lunch in a shellfish bar in NY. We were having such a good time we never wanted to leave.
Is he really gone? I still can’t believe it.
Thanks…nice to meet you. Yes, I’ve been lurking in the shadows for quite a while now. Time to break out, don’t you think?
Good Morning DeVeria, Jane, Eve and all,
Like a lot of others, I found this site during the Libby Trial. I think Arianna had one of Christy’s posts up and I followed her here. It took me a while to fit in, get the lay of the land, etc., but now I feel like many commenters are my friends.
One of the many great opportunities that FDL offers is a real sense of community. When someone gets sick, or there’s a natural disaster, like the fires we keep getting here in LA, or a death, the folks here really rally around. We comfort, encourage, and sometimes even smack each other upside the head to get in line! Oh, yeah, we also share food. Not just recipes.
It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Flowers. I look forward to many PUACs together. This morning when I woke up, I had the urge to pitch a tantrum. Wanted to throw myself on the floor, kick my feet and whine I want my Christy. I want her, I want her, I want her! Okay, we’re all in this together and everything will be just fine.
Christy, keep up your great attitude and don’t forget about the epsom salt baths.
Hi! I try to be…
You are not alone in your belief…
LOL!!!
panera live blog is usually sundays…you cracked me up right there
without sounding like a presumptious ass, I often lurk out of fear of becoming the resident scold to those who appear to be unaware or take it for granted.
and I will spend the work day with a wry smile knowing there’s a big sporting event being televised in Arkansas
Good morning, DeVeria. I’m also a resident PITA who plays devil’s advocate and frequently goes off topic.
I’ve been here almost two years after following a link from another blog.
Look forward to your Saturday blogs.
Thanks for stopping by. We will all miss Christy. But I’m sure as she did today, she’ll be stopping by to make sure we are still on our game. Nice to meet you.
Oh God, too cute, thanks for the photo, Jane, that’s some gorgeous kid, DeVeria!
Great to meet you…
Organizing a march is something that takes months (if not years) of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is outside the reach of the blogs.
You have to fight in your weight class. The unions or MoveOn or HCAN could do it, but we simply don’t have the staff or the money or the organizational structure to pull off.
A lot of times people don’t understand that you have to scale your activism to things that you can accomplish. If you spend your energies trying to do something that just is beyond your ability to accomplish, you are wasting people’s time and money and would be better off doing nothing. Because you’re taking those resources away from activities that might be able to have an impact.
So when we decide what kinds of projects we get involved in, we think long and hard about “will this work,” and “can we pull it off.”
If we can’t answer “yes” to both those questions, we don’t do it. A march on Washington is an enormous logistical challenge and while we hope one day to be able to say “yes,” right now we know we can’t. We’re already working round the clock to stretch the resources we have to the max, and a march on Washington is way way way beyond our bandwidth.
What a great looking kid! Lucky Godmother.
Welcome Rashad, and welcome DeVeria.
Oh, I just caught DeVeria’s photo at the top. Not that I’m a material girl, but what a cutie! No wonder bluetoe was hitting on you! Watch out when jayt shows up.
Now that I’m going to have to check out!
Welcome to FDL, DeVeria, oh, and would you please pass the cream and sugar?
I remember your post – ‘and he was off to hunt down some military history book’
can’t help but think of him as events unfold and all the ‘fun’ he’d have had with these klowns now dotting our landscape
Thanks for the welcome. There’s nothing wrong with playing devils advocate…
I’m a big girl, I’ll be alright. It is interesting how we get caught up in routines though. Although I don’t mean to infer that that is all she is. I understand her email is still working, so I will have to send her shots of my daughter’s wedding next weekend.
Thanks! My pride and joy…
I would love to have a yearly “fire by the lake”
ever think of something like that?
We both thank you!
((dmac))
Been missing you, gf. Don’t let any pompous dh’s chase you away, again. *g*
Go Razorbacks!
I loved that too. When Ben sent me the email saying that the Ross/Lincoln ad would run at the beginning of the football game that everyone in Arkansas would be watching, I just laughed and laughed.
Ben Tribbett deserves tremendous credit for that campaign. He really kicked it through, designed the ad buy for maximum impact and worked tirelessly to make it happen.
Uh oh…I’ll keep my eye out. Thanks for the compliment!
on it’s way…
Hey, I remember you :)
Good to see your cheery face – so to speak.
Oh wow…so you are going to have a busy week! Congratulations!
Jane,
Thanks for pointing out Prof. Glenn Reynolds to me. He seems to be similar to others in academe who are able to stitch together elaborate arguments with endless – but selective – facts to prove a prior conclusions and personal opinions.
Character counts as much as intelligence, if not more.
I wrote you a longish comment yesterday to the post “Accountability Now Targets Jim Cooper for Primary Challenge.” Initially, I thought shopping for a primary challenger to him wasn’t the best answer.
But the more I learn about him, his views, his record, his district, and his ties to companies that have bankrolled his campaigns, the more I realize that you are right.
My only question is, who is the “special someone.” By my count, as DeVeria’s house mate, that should be a plural.
Of course Kobe is at the front of the line. He LOOOOOVES DeVeria. She used to be a bit nervous about the dogs when she came to live with us but now Kobe has to know where she is at all times or he gets nervous. He thinks he is her boyfriend, and would be despondent to learn that he wasn’t.
D: I have been missing you…was away for several days and now swamped. But to say, your Mother of the Bride ensemble sounds terrific. Awesome, actually. Hope all is well…enjoy.
Ok, I get that. But I’d be satisfied if all the progressive blogs offered to publicize the work of others.
The harsh reality of local anti-war movements after 9/11 but I certainly don’t regret the time I spent engaging in those activities. I’m hoping to be able to engage some of the Libertarians who call in to WMNF’s talk shows if they stop by the station’s table today and tomorrow.
We probably should. That’s a good idea.
When DeVeria first came to live with us we lived by a lake in Virginia, but now we live in DC so we’d have to find a “lake.”
Welcome DeVeria!
Hello Jane and Eve!
I found the site a long time ago. Before the Libby trial. Christy was quite welcoming to me when I delurked. So was Jane. I found Marcy about the same time.
I have been so thankful for the community here and the netroots organizing efforts. It has been empowering.
However, the knowledge that posts, which involve stopping to appreciate the little things in life, show up here at the Lake, makes the complete “voice” of FDL real and complex. Real in the way any relationship with an individual should be – multidimentional. Neat to see how many voices become one voice.
Christy, if you stop by to read, hope you are taking care.
Sweet little guy there too! Great picture! My oldest use to spend all day with me at the office when he was a baby. It made the work day seem “in perspective”.
Good morning, DeVeria! It’s nice to meet you!
I don’t comment often, but I’m addicted to this site, and I’m so inspired by Jane and Christy and all the other knowledgeable people who post.
I’m pulling up the last of my garden plants and annuals today. Sad, but I’m heavinge a sigh of relief, too: I won’t have to feel guilty when I neglect to water and fertilize!
This was to Cbl, but sending to all now—’spinny wheel’ not letting me respond to all, (same old browser)and i have to go out for a quick errand….will read all when i get back…..
Thanks mah love(s)…missed you…
doing pottery again.
started a new project, with a local clinic – fairly new building, no pictures in rooms or anywhere.offered to donate images in honor of my doc, to decorate, if they would pay for printing, framing, etc..I would do all of the work….now they want me to do all of the clinics. Is a big deal…..So, you never know.
Be careful Jane, can’t tell all my secrets…never know who may be lurking…lol. Kobe is first in line, and truth be told, he doesn’t like it when anybody else is around!
Oh, now that would be my project! I love the water!
Thanks for the welcome. I am big on promoting the fact that we have to stop sometimes to enjoy the small things…if we don’t enjoy them, we will never appreciate the big ones.
Welcome!
looking forward to your ‘on the ground’ imput
the numbers never lie – and Rachel cited yet another Blue Dog districts poll last night that carries the same numbers. I watch fairly closely and none of the Blue Dogs are as out of step with their constituents as Mr ‘Bend Over Backwards’ – the louder he squeals (and he’s just getting started) the more validation that we are proceeding down the right path
Oh, ha! (I say that alot, don’t I? I have chosen court jester as my personal job here at the lake.) Fifteen years ago, when my youngest was just several months old, I was writting a screenplay with a partner who was living in Santa Monica. Every morning, I’d drop the older to off to school, then head over the hill. Had to take Sepulveda because my old VW bus couldn’t keep up on the freeway. I’d take the baby with. We’d prop him up in the same kind of carrier Rashad is in, in the photo you linked. We had a little toy phone and toy typewriter for him. When he got fussy, which wasn’t often, we’d throw him in his stroller and walk down Montana and discuss the next scene. Oh, and my partner was dog sitter for her house mates pouchs. It was after that big earthquake, and she didn’t want the doggies home alone. The situation at Casa Hamsher just reminds me of those days so much.
Hi! Now gardening is something I wish I could do…I just don’t have a green thumb at all. I have a peace lily that I got last November and I’m struggling with it. Suggestions?
‘morning, DeVeria, and welcome. And a shout out to Christy — take good care of yourself! And Jane, thanks, always for all you’re doing leading this merry band.
Overcast day in the tall timber, time to pack up and return to the “big city” of Fargo.
That is just fantastic. Maybe some of your pottery too.
Off to play activist and spread revolution.
Again, Welcome DeVeria

If someone was organizing a march we certainly would, but so far nobody with the resources has stepped up.
It takes more than a couple of posts telling people to come. Someone has to have the staff and resources to make sure that when they get here they have what they need: where are they going to stay? who’s going to get the permits? how about the porta potties?
If we don’t have reason to believe those things (and many others) are going to be in place, we feel responsible for encouraging people to do something and we’re not going send them into an ill-prepared effort. I don’t care how many people ask me to, or how well intentioned they are. I’m not going to be pressured into telling people to walk into chaos.
I think the unions and MoveOn were going to do something in October in DC but I haven’t heard anything about it recently. If people want a mach I suggest asking them, and we’ll happily promote it.
Jane is right. Anyone remember the PUMA movement trying last year to organize a protest in Denver? Whatever you think of the PUMA position, fact is that it’s not easy to organize and produce an effective display. Then again, in the case of the PUMA movement, there was always more noise than there were numbers of supporters to begin with…
Anyway, while organizing a march might be something that takes months (if not years) of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars and so may be outside the reach of the blogs, I have been infinitely impressed by the internet as a tool and the ability of blogs to get the word out so that funds can be raised for very effective tv and newspaper ads.
I’ve donated to HealthCareForAmericanNOW! and am happy each time I see their ad in TN (at least 2 or more times a day I see it) and I donated to ActBlue for the Tell Lincoln and Ross to ACT LIKE DEMOCRATS! ad, which I understand is running in Arkansas now (or will be shortly).
Thanks! It’s overcast here as well…rain is a’coming.
Thanks, see you next time!
I’ve missed you too. Did you know that the MOB has a lot of responsibilities? Since the wedding is out of town for everyone, especially those flying in from DC, I have to put together welcome goodie bags for all the rooms…water, fruit, granola bars, etc. Also, I got bud vases for each room, so I’ll be buying several bunches of flowers for that project. Not for the wedding, that’s someone else’s job. Also, I got little fabric bags that I will be filling with, wait, I’m sure you can guess, lavendar infused epsom salt. It’s going to be a blast, and we just want everyone to be as comfortable as possible.
Thanks for your support. Every bit makes a difference.
btw – appropos of nothing other than Mike Ross picking a bad week to give up football:D
there was a Campaign Silo post several weeks back that linked to the original Inst. for Southern Studies post about the Pharmacy Sale. it coincides with Stern’s timeline as to when he began his um, research. – iow, what if in fact Ross is headed for a Cunningham-like fall – all because some link at the Lake caught Stern’s eye ???
Speaking of Mikey, there were several other comments besides me who called and got the same response that he is strongly For the PO. I don’t read every thread, so do you know if Jane followed up on that?
Welcome to the Lake, DeVeria!
Don’t remember exactly when I came to the earliest iteration of FDL, back when they used Haloscan for comments, but it seems like it wasn’t long after the original site launched. It’s been a fun place to hang.
Hope you’ll enjoy your new gig here with PUAC.
Such a nice touch for overnight guests. I recently stayed at a hotel for a wedding and was pleasantly surprised by a basket in the room with wine, nuts and a few other goodies. Very thoughtful.
Welcome DeVeria! Looking forward to your posts here.
Thank you so much. And yes, Arkansas ads started running last week. PhRMA flipped out and started running a counter-ad, which we’re still trying to get our hands on.
That’s DeVeria–and Jane, selfless and always working.
But DeVeria, please keep your leg elevated! She’s also dealing with an injured leg.
I didn’t see that. Where is that demi?
ah yes, the comedy stylings of congressional staffers. I haven’t called his office in a few weeks – let’s just say I actively ‘follow’ him on twitter
strongly for the PO huh ? sounds like I need to place a call Monday am :D
Thanks…we are going to have a good time
Thanks for thanking me, but I feel like I should be thanking everyone who works hard to create blogs like this one and who works hard to produce ads like the ones that I support with $ contributions.
Thanks egregious!
I’ll be fine…no time to slow down right now.
I think I better mention here that I’m grateful and in awe of all you’ve done to push for health care reform. At the same time I see all these stupid tea parties all over the news and sit here (like a sheep, I know) wishing I could do the same but for a real cause.
There is a counter-ad to the Health Care for America NOW! ad, too. It’s produced by a group called Conservatives for Patients’ Rights. I see that ad about once for every 2 to 3 times I see the ad from Health Care for America NOW!
The main argument of the ad from Conservatives for Patients’ Rights is that the public option COULD lead to some insidious something or other. I always find that conditional phrasing “COULD” humorous, until I realize that many people are frightened by the insidious something or other, don’t see the logical fallacy in the assertion, and turn into the misinformed and all-too-angry shouters at town hall meetings…
Shit, I messed up. Wrong Mike. (Blame it on the wedding crazies). It was Mike Honda…. http://firedoglake.com/page/4/
Good to meet you, DeVeria, welcome. Don’t remember exactly when I started visiting the Lake, or when I first registered here. Seems so long ago now, well before the Libby trial and well before Marcy moved to this site. I do remember my first comment here, though (kind of rude, looking back now), something to the effect that people were a little too nice here, and that I needed to visit the sites that allowed me to vent my anger more. But I kept coming back, and this site allowed that anger to subside a bit (for which my wife is eternally grateful, I might add).
What I’ve learned is that the people here (bloggers and commenters alike) are the best, most humane, intelligent and smart people I’ve ever had the chance to associate with, and I’m appreciative of that.
Look forward to visiting with you here on Saturday mornings.
We did what we could (which was more than any other organization did IIRC) starting in July — we crowd sourced all of the Democratic events, put up a searchable widget for people to sign up to go and tried to make sure that there would be Democrats there to defend their reps from teabag attacks.
Others copied it afterwards and by the end of the month Democrats were outnumbering teabaggers once other bigger organizations started turning people out, but again, it was using our size and what we do well to greatest effect.
Really, I cannot emphasize it enough. If people want a march, they have to be asking those who are capable of making one happen. It is way outside even the skill set of the blogs right now, and if someone decided to do it just because people were pressuring them, it could cause more harm than good.
Yes!
Hi, nice to meet you. Tell your wife she is very welcome…we do what we can…lol. We have a great family here and that allows us to achieve a lot.
Hi, DeVeria. Nice to have you here. I’m the oldest Laker – 76 – and have more fun here than anyone can imagine. We’re glad you are joining us and look forward to many happy Saturday mornings.
I hope others learn what you have. It’s fine to rant and rave once in a while, but what this site offers is more than a place to do just that. Some folks are shy about making phone calls. That’s cool. We’re all different. But, those who are shy can help by sending emails or faxes or doing research on whichever topic is hot and share links. There’s always something to help with. And, action is the antidote for despair!
lol.
’bout 18 months ago on another blog, when I suggested some action, a commenter said to me ‘you must be one of those goody-two shoes firedoglake people’
‘why yes, and what a shame we can’t accomplish anything’ was my oh so civil reply
I wonder if goody-two shoes means someone is telling the truth and nothing but the truth.
GM, cbl2
Good morning and welcome, DeVeria! Though that seems a bit presumptuous of me.
I’ve been lurking since some time in the depths of the W. Bush administration (is it over yet? Apparently not really) and now comment sometimes.
My respect for Jane and Christy is immense. Thanks for all that you do to make all they do possible.
(Yes, present tense for Christy. C, taking care of yourself IS a contribution.)
The following email came to me yesterday from Mike Ross, Ar 4th Dist. Ross has been an adamant opponent of real health care reform. He has strenuously obstructed the public option. Ross receives more than substantial support from the health care industry. This letter appears to indicate a policy shift.
Please read the following obfuscated letter and share an opinion: unsubscribe@cablelynx.com.
Dear Michael:
Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009. I appreciate hearing from you on this critically important issue.
Recently, I was pleased to see President Obama address Congress and make very clear his plan and vision for health care reform. Please know that I support his three overriding goals for health care reform: to bring stability and security to Americans who have insurance today; to make sure there is affordable coverage for those who do not; and, to reduce the unsustainable growth in the cost of health care, which has doubled in the last decade and will double again if we do nothing.
Like the President, I too believe that a government-run public option is only one small component of health care reform. This is why I supported health care reform legislation in the Energy and Commerce Committee that included a public option in order to ensure that we could move forward with the legislative process because I believe that we absolutely need health care reform. I remain encouraged by the President’s willingness to leave room for compromise on this measure. I strongly believe that we need to build on what works and fix what’s broken; we do not need to completely overhaul our entire health care system.
Regardless of whether the final bill contains a government-run public option, the uninsured will be able to enter a government-established insurance exchange, compare health insurance companies and select a plan based on a variety of benefits packages. The most the uninsured would pay out of pocket for insurance and co-payments, regardless of which plan they choose, would be between 1.5 percent and 12 percent of their income, if they earn less than 400 percent of poverty or about $88,200 a year for a family of four. The remainder of the costs would be subsidized by the government to help those working families most in need. In other words, whether there is a government-run public option or not, the amount the uninsured would pay out of pocket would remain the same.
I believe we must create opportunities for the uninsured, self-employed and small businesses to participate in a group, with choices they can afford. We must also require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions and they should not be able to raise your premiums or cancel your coverage when you get sick. I have heard many “real life” horror stories from good, hard working people across Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District about the issues and challenges they have faced when dealing with profit-driven insurance companies.
We must slow the growth of health care costs in this country because if they continue to grow at twice the rate of inflation, more and more Americans will keep losing their health insurance coverage. Any health care reform bill must provide affordable health insurance for every American citizen, with more choices, not less, and with peace of mind knowing you will never go without health insurance again, even when you change jobs, get laid off, or become ill.
As Congress debates health care reform, I will continue to play a constructive role in the process. We need common sense health care reform that reduces costs, increases access and protects patient choice. It is my hope that the final health care reform bill will offer the kind of reforms that I can support – a common sense plan that reflects Arkansas values. As for my negotiations with the White House and House Leadership, President Obama issued a statement from the White House saying that other Democratic Blue Dog members and I had made the bill better.
I was not sent to Washington to simply give a rubber stamp of approval to every legislative idea that is considered. I know my constituents elected me to represent them in our nation’s capital – not a political party or special interests. I understand that the legislative process is about negotiation and compromise and that we, your elected officials, are charged with the great responsibility of crafting sensible, responsible laws that are in the best interest of the constituents we represent and our nation.
There are currently five versions of health care reform before the United States Congress and nine more legislative votes before we have a final bill. I am sure that there will be times throughout this negotiation process when I will want to support this legislation and others when I will not. However, I remain committed to engaging in this debate and offering up ideas to help make the final product better. I am optimistic that I will be able to support the final bill that goes to the President for his signature because too many people in my district need and deserve affordable health insurance.
Thank you again for contacting me. I look forward to your continued input as Congress moves forward with this critical debate. Please do not hesitate to contact me in my Washington, D.C., or district office most convenient to you if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Mike Ross
MR: aj
Thanks…me too!
now that was a snarky response…lol
Since folks are saying how they got here, I’ve been reading since summer of 2005, looking for intelligent life in the universe. I helped a little with Plame House so Jane, Christy, and Marcy invited me to join them as an emergency backup at the Libby Trial. It changed my life in so many ways. I’m a different, and better, person because of FDL.
That is lol. I also read on another blog that we are a bunch of girl scouts. I’ve been called a Pollyana here before, but that was a while ago.
Thanks…we try our best over here. Yes, Christy is making a great contribution by taking care of health and her family.
Mornin’ Twain,
and ageist or not, I had no idea you were 76 – makes me more hopeful for my own future
being called a goody two shoes was one of my proudest moments as a firedog
And we love you here egregious!
Girl scouts, wow….wonder what they are saying now?
You will love being an old broad. You can say so many things you might not have at a younger age and people just think you are sorta flighty. Of course, they always think that about women anyway. :)
Ross is full of sh*t. Like Cooper, he hides behind his misinterpretation of President Obama’s 3 goals. I also noticed on his website the phrasing “government-run public option” that appears in this letter. Had he been listening to the President’s words at the joint session of Congress, he would have heard a clear statement about the way the public health insurance option would be run and paid for. Of course, he was there, but he wasn’t listening because he didn’t want to hear it. To call it a “government-run public option” is an obvious ploy to feed fears of government takeover and is phrasing that Ross took either from Republican operatives or got from lobbyists who gave the same talking points to Republican operatives. Ross is full of sh*t.
Btw, please take a look at the letter I sent to Ross yesterday up @ comment 28 above.
I often think of you when I see the now reality based David Shuster and how a little gesture of loaning a power cord in the Prettyman basement led to better reporting on my teevee :D
They might be saying, How come those goody-two foul-mouth girl scouts are actually taking action And getting lots of mentions on tv? It must be because Jane’s so purty!
I’m speechless, DeVeria.
The thing is, people here are committed to a cause, and a big part of that cause is a thing I like to call ’social justice’. And, the commitment of this community and actions that it has taken has some reults to show for it.
I became politically active after the election of 2000, as I began to see some of the things Bush was doing and the direction he was starting to take this country in.
’bout 10 years ago I read the short but inspiring When I’m 80, I’ll Wear Purple and I figured why wait ?
Misspelled ‘results’
Yes, sir! Right you are. And, now the cause I need to focus on is looking fabulous for the wedding. I’m off to the gym. Be well, my friends. See you later.
Way late to the party as usual but let me first welcome DeVeria and then second your comment. I have been coming here since haloscan and was so relieved to find such a smart group of kind people. I don’t think I have ever been so pleased to be able to learn so much. Thanks to all.
KISSES and HUGS!!! I am so thrilled you are here!
LOL
I am late, the victim of windows madness. Just want to say that the FDL family is doing the right thing and desperately needed by this nation.
Any friend of Christy or Jane is a friend of mine. I gotta go.
I know right…have to put the numbers up for a few hours on Saturday mornings now. :)
Have a great week…try to enjoy. Come back with details…
Thanks…I look forward to getting to know you.
Hi Lisa…thanks!
Thank you..we are all trying here.
Thanks, De Veria. Welcome again and I think you did a fantastic job this morning. Christy was right again. You are funny and adorable.
Thanks…I think I’m going to love this. Time to come from behind the scenes now…have a good one.
Thanks everybody for the encouragement and support. Off to get ready for Rashad’s baby shower!
crikey ! I have to go as well. bbl
thanks DeVeria !
oh and Ben Tribbet – MWAH ! you are the shizz
I hope you will change your mind – can imagine few things more private than where somebody attends church or temple. Can we disagree with public matters and let people live their private lives?
Have a wonderful wedding, demi. You’ll be beautiful and radiant, I’m sure.
Well, darn, seems I’m arriving just as DeVeria has left!
If you look back in, DeVeria, just want to add another welcome (though how you’ll have time I can’t imagine, now that we know what your ‘day job’ is.
I’ve been here quite awhile, too, exact link lost in memory clouds – maybe from Eric Alterman link? Not sure; pre Plame/Libby.
I think many of us are loudmouths – we have learned well here how to present arguments, disagree, and yet remain friends. (Raven, I luv ya, bud)
So glad to see Christy’s brief appearance – I miss you, too, girl.
I shall try to get up earlier on Saturdays – let’s see, do I go to the farmers market first? or after? Y’all are just too early for me.
Btw, it’s finally cool enough in So Texas to consider bakiing – pumpkin-chocolate cupcakes are on my mind, also some pumpkin muffins.
Oh, and a perfect PUAC comment – I seized the chance of a great sale to replace my dying food processor yesterday, so expect to do a lot of baking this fall and winter.
Great to make your acquaintace DeVeria,
I’m also Libby trial refugee . Infrequent poster, assiduous reader. I stayed here because of the overflowing humanity that most pups share post after post.
Hi DeVeria, great to meet you. I’m Jane and Christy’s first evah reader and fangirl. I don’t blather here nearly as much as I used to, but still follow everything. You have big PUAC shoes to fill, but are doing a lovely job so far :)
You’re correct, egregious, I’ve already given it up. Eric Cantor gives me the creeps and I want nothing to do with him–ever.
I remember that! Has it been a long time? Seems like yesterday…
Hi DeVeria, I’m a native New Mexican who is in SE Ohio for years and years. So nice to meet you!
Just checking back…and it is beautiful in Austin. We had such a very hot summer that seemed to last forever, then unusually rainy…cloudly, with rain all the past week. So,today mildly warm, touch of fall, clear…beautiful. Much to enjoy.
Hi and thanks for the welcome. I’ll be checking in later on for any family that may have missed me. Baking…hmmm…I like nothing better than dessert. Hint, hint!
As usual, DeVeria – I am totally late. I’m so glad that you agreed to keep things here at Christy’s Place going; I think we would miss the clubhouse terribly.
My health, I came for the waters.
;>)
Hola, DeVeria.
But the thing was… she WAS bright and beautiful.
It wasn’t just an idle decription not based in fact… and really what 22 yo isn’t bright and beautiful? Even the guys…
Chill!!
Welcome… DeVeria… I’ve been reading the lake since the mid-plame days I guess… really appreciate the work you all do.
This is the best definition of citizen journalism I can think of.
ps… I live in the town where Joe and Valerie now (also) live!
I know I’m epu’d, but just wanted to say hello DeVeria, very nice to meet you this morning. I’ve been reading FDL since about 2007, and I live in SW Washington state. The first comment I ever put up here was after I had attended a Rep. Brian Baird (D-Bush Dog) town hall, and I put up notes I had taken about what he had to say after voting against funding Bush’s illegal wars and then all of a sudden changing his mind and voting for funding. I don’t comment a lot, but I read every day. I write SEO content, which leaves time for my creative pursuits of acting and singing, so I’m at my computer almost all day and I come to FDL for little work breaks throughout the day. I love the cooking/recipe PUAC threads, and ones that focus on books or gardening.
Hi DeVeria
Nice to meet ya, I have been here a looooong time, before Christy even!
I’m an ornery cuss and everyone just calls me Busted.
As usual. this is a EPU comment, you guys get up too early for me.
hey Votus, one of these days we are going to have to have a beer or something. It seems we are virtually neighbors.,
people still here?
There were a lot of people here earlier, but now I’m having a hard time figuring out which thread everyone went to for general discussion and information sharing.
Absolutely–that would be fun! I’m just in Camas. I wonder how many others live nearby–one of the mods mentioned to me a while back that there are a few.
I know. I just got here and read it. Wanted to meet the new kid.
You can email me at athenamac AT comcast DOT net–we’ll set something up!
“A beautiful, bright 22yr old girl just died”
How does this sound to you?: ‘A handsome, bright 22yr old boy just died.’
In a serious context we usually refer to a 22 year old male by the more respectful term ‘young man’.
I will chill if you give me a good reason 22 yr old females should not be referred to as respectfully as males.
You read “bright, beautiful” as disrespectful?
There’s no point in arguing with you… especially since in this case the poor young woman WAS bright and beautiful.
Hi DeVeria. Sorry I’m late.
Thanks for stepping up to the PUAC challenge!
*rubbing sleep from my eyes*
g’morning deveria. what a great start you have had this morning.
Hello to everybody that I may have missed earlier. It is nice to have met you all. Some old faces, some new faces. I’m totally exhausted! Just got back from Rashad’s baby shower and it was absolutely wonderful. I may need you to remind me not to buy that baby another thing! Well, I’m going to turn in now. I think we had a good start today to a nice, long walk along the Lake. See you next week!
