Oh I’m OK. I just checked the Chronicle and the UC protest article is up to 444 comments. Most people get it, but a lot of people just don’t.

Two points of unfairness: 1. the regents and univ. leaders voted themselves a pay raise on top of incredibly generous salaries ($800K some of them) and 2. the students who have already chosen UC might have chosen other colleges earlier given the enormous tuition hike. Enormous.

The fair thing would be for the regents to at least freeze their own salaries, and raise costs as incoming students arrive, having made a knowledgeable decision.

really ticks me off. UC is already one of the most expensive state-run college systems, at least here on the west coast. and commenters keep comparing it to Stanford. UCB and UCLA maybe, not the entire system.

Over 4000 people protested.

OTOH, one of the slogans didn’t help “education should be free” maybe they meant some kind of freedom statement, I don’t know but turned some of the onlookers off.

i paid very low fees for my classes at the local community college back in the 70’s and 80’s. certainly was no where near what i paid for stephanie’s fees this year — almost $1k for one quarter and that does not include books and lab fees.

I do know that when I graduated, my total bill was about half the salary I made when I got out, which was paltry. Now it costs twice the salary of an entry level position. I’m excluding the top earners like engineers etc.

I had no scholarships, thank you very much. My dad footed the bill and I paid him back over a couple of years.

GA is providing state university education for everyone exceeding a stipulated grade point average. The state lottery money is dedicated to these scholarships.

First we ban gambling because it’s immoral. Then we say it’s ok if for a good cause. Then one state enacts a lottery (computer enabled) and every other state justifies theirs because “their” residents just might buy lottery tix across state lines.
