Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has named former Democratic Party head and longtime Kennedy family friend Paul G. Kirk Jr. to replace the late Edward M. Kennedy in the United States Senate.
This is an interim appointment until the post is filled by a special election in January. Gov. Patrick has stated (and now Kirk has confirmed) that Kirk reportedly will not run for the permanent seat.
Deval Patrick is making the announcement at this hour. We will update with a statement soon made the announcement just after 11AM EDT:
"He is a distinguished lawyer, volunteer, and citizen, and he shares the sense of service that so distinguished Senator Ted Kennedy," Patrick said at a press conference at the State House. "Paul will not seek the open seat in the special election coming up in January. But for the next few months, he will carry on the work and the focus of Senator Kennedy, mindful of his mission, and his values, and his love of Massachusetts."
Kirk said he plans to take the oath of office on Friday.

Hello Christy!
Capitalism, a love story. See it.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
Back to 60
Senator Kerry was, as usual, quite ponderous on the subject in a presser after the appointment was announced.
Thanks, Gregg.
Kirk has lobbyed for insurance and PhARMA. Not a great choice. But then Patrick is not a great governor.
Is this a good choice? Or just a decent choice until a proper replacement can be voted in?
More like 50 democrats, Sanders, 8 DINOs and Liarman
Thanks for nothing, Governor Patrick. We don’t even know this guy here. The Kennedy’s wanted him. Talk about cronyism. This guy sits on the board of a health insurance company and lobbied for Pharma. Deval Patrick should have picked Mike Dukakis, someone obviously well known by the state and particularly popular with Patrick’s base. I’ve heard Dems thought Dukakis would be too much of an independent voice on health care. You can bet he would have been. For those of you not here in MA, this isn’t something to celebrate. We lost out on a wonderful choice who would have pushed the health debate left.
Right, thanks for pointing that out.
Change the rules as you go along to benefit your agenda… Had the republicans pulled this shameless stunt the media would have been all over it. The media gave the dem’s a free ride; again… Imagine that…
So, I’m ready to be surprised by this guy. Favorably.
Please be more specific. Which alternate universe are you referring to?
Scarecrow has a cross-post up on the front page: “Glenn Beck Boils Republicans”
Well, good for you. I am the one stuck with him as my Senator. Patrick really effed up here. It’s not right.
My first choice was the Duke, but Kirk is fine by me.
What I like is the swift action, not boggled up by do-nothing/obstructive Repubs.
I’m so glad I live in the Commonwealth…
See, I wanted someone who would pull the health care debate to the left. I don’t favor national Romney Care. Kirk is obviously not that guy. Dukakis is:

Well masslib, as I understand it, yesterday the MA legistlature did not vote that the appointment would take effect immediately … and so there is a 90 day waiting period.
So I guess it won’t be an issue anyway.
Anyone else hearing this?
Is Dukakis prepared to run in January? Does he stand a good chance of winning?
No, of course not. Neither of the potential choices are running the special election. This is an interim appointment.
Um, I heard he takes office tomorrow.
*This* Paul Kirk? From today’s Top 25 Least Covered Stories of 2009?
http://www.projectcensored.org…..l-debates/
“Since 1987, a private corporation created by and for the Republican and Democratic parties called the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) has sponsored the US Presidential debates and implemented debate contracts. In order to shield the major party candidates from criticism, CPD has refused to release debate contract information to the public.
…
Frank Fahrenkopf and Paul Kirk, who co-chair and control the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), are registered lobbyists for multinational corporations. Kirk has collected $120,000 for lobbying on behalf of Hoechst Marion Roussel, a German pharmaceutical company. Fahrenkopf earns approximately $900,000 a year as the chief lobbyist for the nation’s $54 billion gambling industry. As president of the American Gaming Association, Fahrenkopf directs enormous financial contributions to major party candidates and saturates the media with “expert” testimony extolling gambling’s “many benefits.” “We’re not going to apologize for trying to influence political elections,” said Fahrenkopf.
“These are the guys,” author George Farah points out, “deciding who gets to participate in the most important political forums in the United States of America.”
He adds, “Kirk and Fahrenkopf’s lobbying practices demonstrate a willingness to protect corporate interests at the expense of voters’ interests. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the co-chairs of the CPD are willing to protect major party interests at the expense of voters’ interests.”
Wheee!!!! Of course Kirk’s promising not to run for the seat. Why would he, when he can simply cuddle up to whomever *does*?
Perhaps I missed it. What happened to the 90-day waiting period?
I think the Gov declared an “emergency” and so he will be sworn in
tomorrow….
Of course this is why the Mass. appointments law was originally changed back in 2004 – to prevent weak or venal governors from filling empty Senate seats with party hacks.
Gov. Patrick did show some gumption, however, by calling out the corporate honchos at Hyatt hotels for it cruel treatment of the fired housekeepers at the chain’s three Boston properties. It’s on the front page of the Globe today.
THIS TYPE OF STUFF IS WHY NO ONE TRUST’S THE GOV. A LAW THAT TED HAD PASS MUST BE CHANGE TO FILL HIS SEAT. MY 1ST GRADER KNOWS SOMETHING IS JUST WRONG
ABOUT THAT. I HOPE HE’S NOT ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE.BUT IF HE IS, I AM SURE YOU DEMS CAN TWIST IT TO PASS SOME OTHER JUNK
OPEN YOUR EYES
There’s no 90 day waiting period and, though i wanted Dukakis, He was only interested in serving as an intern Senator, not to run for the seat. He is 75 years old after all.
