Why are so many doctors in favor of killing old people and Down babies?
Among all the players in the health care debate, doctors may be the least understood about where they stand on some of the key issues around changing the health care system. Now, a new survey finds some surprising results: A large majority of doctors say there should be a public option.
When polled, "nearly three-quarters of physicians supported some form of a public option, either alone or in combination with private insurance options," says Dr. Salomeh Keyhani. She and Dr. Alex Federman, both internists and researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, conducted a random survey, by mail and by phone, of 2,130 doctors. They surveyed them from June right up to early September.
UPDATE:
People in comments are quite right to point out that these physicians are for single payer, not the public option.

This dude was great!
Zalaya’s back, and democracynow is doing a segment on it.
I love the Ed Show (as well as KO & Rachel) as he tell’s it like it is Dem or Rep. He will hold Obama’s feet to the fire not like reich-wing talking heads who never question their party line.
Of course most doctors are for the public option, as would most thinking, caring human beings.
Could it be they see the end results of insurance companies DEATH PANELS since they know who does and doesn’t have insurance and what the outcomes were.
I sure Doctors love all their patients equally and it must pain them to see some of their loved ones die for profit.
Paging Emptywheel, you are needed in the debunking room.
Poor Hillary & O. Zalaya just won’t lay down and kowtow to the U.S. sanctioned coup.

And IAEA is finally starting to talk about the Israeli nukes.
I hate to break it to you, BT, but the “Mad as Hell” doctors are not in favor of a public option, they support SINGLE PAYER.
_
But continue with your efforts at marginalizing single payer advocates. So far, you’ve all done a great job — moving the discussion to the far right, to the point where no one is even discussing a strong public option….
Net neutrality is up on democracynow.
Shrub and Co did such a great job of destroying our credibility that now other countries feel safe in criticizing Israeli policies. It’s about fuckin’ time. I can’t wait for the trolls to label me anti-Semitic.
Are you sure you weren’t at the HP watching the lingerie football? Now see, if it were jayt, I wouldn’t have had to ask.
There has been criticism for years but the media hasn’t felt that it was important enough to cover.
Funny title. these doctors are for single payer.
Hoo, shit. That’s got some banksters sweating this morning, me hopes.
You’re correct, one had to get into the foreign press to see any criticism of Israel, however muted.
You & me both. The whole power has been on Israel’s side, and as is common with power, they’ve completely abused it.
New guy, Japanese I think, will replace elBaradei at IAEA soon, maybe beginning of October, and there’s a lot of pressure on IAEA to be anti-Iran and pro-Israel, so there is some anxiety about how the new guy will hold up to that pressure. ElBaradei threaded the needle pretty adeptly.
What is lingerie football.
major correction required in the title to this post.
mad as hell doctors are for single payer (hr 676 improved and expanded medicare for all) and AGAINST a public option in a multi payer system.
in the ed schultz video in the post, the doc says that single payer is the only way we are going to be able to afford to have universal healthcare.
from the mad as hell doctors website (my bold):
please correct the post title to: Early Morning Swim: Doctors for Single Payer on Ed Schultz
Mornin’, stranger. Nice to see ya. On top of it as usual I see.
That’s not lingerie. Bikini football would be more correct. Some nice legs, though.
It’s at HuffingtonPost:
Mad as Hell Doctors on Public Option:
The “public option” is doomed.
First: we will still have a dysfunctional health care system designed around insurance companies. Second: it will be impossible to cover everyone without raising taxes. The Obama administration is already saying it is acceptable to leave out 15 million people. Which 15 million? Will you be one of them? Who gets to decide? Third: in a “post-option” environment you can bet that the health insurance industry will manipulate the rules so that the sickest, most expensive patients will gravitate toward the public plan, which will cause it to fail. When it does, the opponents of real reform will point to the “public option” and scream: “See! Single Payer won’t work!”
http://www.madashelldoctors.com/
This is exactly what I mean when I say PO advocates marginalize the efforts of single payer advocates to fit their own preference for a PO. These doctors are for single payer. Your title should reflect that.
Best funny comment ever from this story:
I guess someone forgot their republican Civics (Medicare=Socialism) :->
I apologize to anyone here who doesn’t have health insurance and had a heart attack looking at the bikini football.
good morning SD and all. hope you are very well.
edit to add: only a few minutes for a drive by. but nice to “see” you too, even if only for a short bit.
Been to the beach lately? Now that’s heart attack country.
As well as an old dude can be. Still poor and gettin’ older by the day. 1 for 2 ain’t bad.
It is OK if you had a heart attack if you had insurance?
Pretty much the only time I go to the beach, I’m camping. Jeans and flannel shirts mostly. Just booked a coupla nights at Pismo for Thanksgiving.
(Besides, being the old hetero lady I am, no worries about heart attacks. :)
Of course not, silly. Btw, have you seen those aspirin commercials? All we have to do is pop one of those, and life is great.
I remember Pismo Beach. Been a lonnnnng time.
One a day is good for stroke prevention.
censorship is bad enough, misrepresentation is even worse (although i have no reason to think BT did it intentionally — that doesn’t change the fact that individual acts, intentional or not, have added up to a massive amount of censorship and misrepresentation)
I prefer the red wine solution.
It’s incrediby gorgeous. Makes LA beaches look like trash. And, the doggies can go on the beach!
Ahhh, a little vino and a long dark haired leggy girl. Life is good.
Why is it surprising that doctors want the government to pay the bills of the uninsured.
scarecrow is upstairs…
Oh, ha. I see a new version of that commercial. The lady whips open her purse and pulls out a bottle of Ripple. Or, here’s another. Cop’s rousting some guy on a park bench for drinking, and he say’s But, occifer, I felt a heart attack coming on.
real wealth is in your spirit (although i wouldn’t mind the other kind either *g*).
gotta run for now (but first waving to ecahn above)… be well and see ya later….

Then I’m rich as all get out.
It’s a terrible precedent. These doctors are traveling across country for single payer, not some PO. Would be nice if the title reflected their mission.
Yes, I agree. The blog title egregiously misrepresents the mad-as-hell doctors position. I listened to the broadcast yesterday included in this montanamaven diary from yesterday. I recommend people check that out as well. It’s an mp3 podcast of a radio interview. The hosts are a bit dippy, but the doc is sharp as a tack.
Ed did a great job with Hoyer also. Pounded him but good.
Lighten the fuck up on BT. jesus
Terrible title. I interviewed Dr. Paul. He is most certainly NOT for the Public Option. Change the title. Read Masslib’s diary instead.
I’m holding him accountable. that’s a sign of respect.
Any chance he didn’t write the stupid frickin headline?
What the hell does Israel bashing have to do with health care?
The public option is merely government health insurance offered as an alternative to private health insurance. If the insurance companies don’t have any real competition they will continue to overcharge.
Most polls show we all prefer single-payer, but I doubt our spineless Congress will go for it.
And finally, why does the article claim doctors preferring the public option have anything to do with death panels? Is this supposed to be a joke?
Thanks, alank. Dave and I are a bit dippy. We have to sit in a radio station for three hours on beautiful Saturdays just to do battle with conservatives and libertarians. So I get a little loopy and we both had a mild case of food poisoning, but we do have long interviews with national writers and activists that get more of the message out than the usual 5 minutes or less allotted on TV. I thought Dr. Paul answered the callers snotty questions well. He also did a great job of answered the questions on medical malpractice/tort reform and doctors owning medical facilities.
His emphasis and the Mad as Hell Docs is on the broken political system moreso than the broken medical system. He said that doctors are usually just too busy to pay attention to politics. Now that their industry is being hashed by politicians they are MAD AS HELL at the corruption.
It’s his post. I presume he can change the title to reflect what this organization supports, even if he didn’t write it.
Interesting article that shows we will not save any money by requiring the uninsured to obtain health insurance (unless we have a public option).
http://www.opednews.com/articl…..7-400.html
Those in power know that health care costs are harming the ability of American businesses to compete, but they don’t want to rein in those costs because that will cut the profits of big pharma and the insurance industry. Their solution is to gradually do away with employer-based health care by taxing the benefits. Because people will tend to do without insurance if not supplied by the employer, they want to impose the mandate to protect the market share of the insurance industry. This entire health care issue is pseudo reform, and should be scrapped.
Yes, you did manage to get that point about the broken political system out in the open. Much appreciated.
Thanks very much, BT!
wow, Single Payer on the front page of FDL. there must have been some mistake! message discipline is slipping a little tiny bit.
hope you don’t get in trouble, Blue Texan.
BT, you rock! thanks very much for the correction!
everybody all happy now?
Yea ok, let me guess..Ed found all of one doctor who is favor of single payer? For each one of those clowns you can find 100 who are not…
Keep it up. You’re in the running for the Lamest Troll of the Year award.
I will continue to hang out as long as you don’t call me a racist. I need a good laugh each day…
