Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused the federal government Saturday of promoting an irresponsible, immoral agenda and suggested Washington look to the Lone Star State for policy guidance.
…
"As a Texan, I’m understandably biased, but I think our whole country could use a dose of Texas-style fiscal discipline," Perry said before criticizing the $1.6 trillion federal deficit.
Perry must have forgotten that he balanced Texas’ books with Barack Obama’s stimulus bill — to the tune of $12 billion. You know, the bill that bailed us out of the Texas-sized mess Perry’s Texan predecessor got the country in. It must have also slipped his mind that he used those "irresponsible" and "immoral" federal funds to fix his house.
And he’s not only a hypocrite, he’s clueless.
PERRY: Why is Texas kind of recession-proof, if you will? As a matter of fact, just today I think, Michael, you said someone had put a report out that the first state that’s coming out of the recession is going to be the State of Texas. I told him, I said, ‘We’re in one?’
Yes, moron. We’re in one. Notes Paul Burka,
I don’t care how ideological the Republican base is. Unemployment in Texas just reached the 8% mark. Everybody knows someone who is suffering in these times. Everybody has lost part of their life savings. It could cost him the race.
Let’s hope.

I can tell that you proud of your governor BT!
We REALLY need Molly Ivins! Governor Good Hair wouldn’t have a chance.
But he’s so pretty.
This is a HUGE leap for Perry…He actually took the time to memorize one of the republican talking points off the copied tearsheet! Amazing..
If this loon took as much time to actually study and learn something about the cesspool he lives in, he would find that not only can he NOT fix the state but it’s slipping away from his or anyone else’s control..Pretty soon, he’ll have to negotiate with Calderone just to get his bus system expansion approved…teehee….
Shorter Perry: I’m shocked SHOCKED to find gambling going on in this establishment
Why didn’t the interviewer call Perry on his “lie”? It’s hilarious how the republics accuse the dems of lying constantly when they invented the word. Or is it that alternate reality they are busy creating?
If the Dem’s had any balls they would make him give it back and that goes for Jingel of La too
DING!
He looks very vain.
I guess the next thing Gov Goodhair will do is call a special session of the legislature so they can stop all of the money being given to ACORN.
I sure am proud to be living in Texas with all of these wingnuts.
I’m not sure Perry ever did accept the stimulus money. He may have rejected it and the Leg. over-ruled him.
Regardless, Perry is completely unworthy of consideration, as a politician or as a human being. He is simply a descendant of the GOP governing philosophy. Take care of business/private sector, and everything will somehow take care of itself.
And, I don’t know where to find it,
but isn’t there a list of how much each state receives in Federal money as a percentage of federal taxes paid in?
And isn’t this number greater than 100 for Texas? IOW, they get more from the federal pot than they send.
Fiscal responsibility, my horse’s ass.
FunnyWheelieDiva
Kay Bailey Hutchison must be licking her chops. I think this bozo just lost the primary.
Texas style fiscal discipline? Yeah- like when GW left the state on the verge of bankruptcy due to unfunded tax cuts all around.
He is simply a descendant of the GOP governing philosophy.
I have to respectfully disagree. He is supposedly a human being. One who doesn’t give a rats ass about those he was elected to represent. If you’re not with him, you’re against him. The republics only care about their own power and personal finance.
Say what you will, but Gov. Goodhair is tough on cold-blooded killers.
Or not.
I’m looking for that stuff right now. It’s hard to find, but I believe Texas gives more than it gets back in fed funds. Alaska and New Mexico are both very high, with giving/getting ratio of near 2. In other words, they get back twice what they give, per capita. I think the general pattern is for more urban states to give more than they get, more rural states get more than they give. Notably, it appears the GOP heartland of the SE US gets back more than they give.

I’m surprised ALL states don’t get back more than they give, considering we’ve been running huge deficits since, what, 2002?
Most Democrats also fit this description, unfortunately. I’m not trying to defend Perry. I’m simply saying he is completely unremarkable–all he is is a GOP Governor. He’s just doing, by and large, what they do.
politicians could change teams as easily as NFL players. All they need to do is get a new jersey and learn a new fight song. Most of em don’t believe anything that they say anyway. it’s just a game.
I should have included this quote:
So, BT, you can claim that Perry “accepted ” 12 billion “dollars” of aid from the federal “government”,
but that doesn’t mean we have to believe you.
One time I said this to a person from Texas, “Don’t mess with Texas. It is already a mess.” That person got very angry at me. But it was worth it.
Here is the link on taxes per state.
new jersey???
Here’s the best document I can find regarding state pay-in/receive-out, regarding fed. funds.
He clearly doesn’t spend enough time outside of the big cities. Or in their lower-income neighborhoods.
Sunday Afternoon Movie a couple of flights upstairs
politicans are a refection of the majority of the voters.
very scary thought
this is texas what do you expect from the southern states that have voted red since the civil rights bill was passed.
racism has many faces but a bigger face in some states
Governor Rick Perry today strenuously defended the execution of a Corsicana man whose conviction for killing his daughters in a house fire hinged on an arson finding that top experts call junk science.
“I’m familiar with the latter-day supposed experts on the arson side of it,” Perry said, making quotation marks with his fingers to underscore his skepticism.
I know that I’m late, and that the conversation has moved elsewhere, but just what the fuck is it about Texans that they not only kill gleefully, but also just can’t be bothered to give a rat’s ass if they execute the wrong person?
Fuck Texas – Please, please, secede, you murderous, heartless, soul-less motherfuckers!
P.S. I know that we have good and principled pups from Teexas – but they’re a hopeless minority – cbl, TexBetsy and oldnslow, for gawd’s sake get out of that hellhole, so that I can roundly and firmly condemn the whole fucking place correctly as the collection of overbaked, reality-challenged, sanctimonious and deludedly self-righteous bunch of pricks that it is, and which comprise the vast majority of the citizenry.
Fuck Texas.
P.S. It occurs to me that our author, Blue Texan, is most likely a Texan. Sorry, but nonetheless ->
Fuck Texas.
I live in Texas, in a rural area not far from Austin. I lost my job in April and have sent out over 200 resumes/applications. I have a Bachelor’s degree and several year’s experience in a number of areas. I have had two, count ‘em, two interviews. During one initial screening call I had for a receptionist position, at $12.00/hr,55 miles one way from home, the interviewer told me they had had 250 responses in the first 24 hours for the position. I don’t know what Texas Rick Perry lives in but it sure ain’t this one. Before I was laid off, I was working in HR. Many people I spoke to said that they came here from other states because they had heard that the economy is good. The truth they found isn’t so rosy. They can’t afford to go back where they came from so now they are stuck. I wish Rick would keep his piehole shut….he’s not helping the situation at all.
I think that Texas gets back more than it gives. At least, according to this (which is from 2000 but things have not changed that much).

It would be a mistake, I think, to say that rural states get more back than they give although this often seems to be the case. I think it is more down to the priorities and wealth of the state in question. California, for example, in addition to being home to some of the greatest cities in the world, is also the #1 agriculturally producing state in the Union. It is just that the state is relatively wealthy and Californians seem to see fit to pay enough taxes at the state level so that the Feds don’t have to pay for everything, down to the last friggen road sign!
I think the more relevant questions to ask would be these:
1) Of those states who crow about states’ rights 24/7, which of them actually pays its way and does not rely upon the Federal Government for necessities in economically good times?
2) Of those states which boast low state taxes, which of them does not rely upon the Federal Government for necessities in good times?
It appears Texas gives more up to fed level than it gets back, if the source is accurate.
I agree it’s not as simple as urban/rural–that was just a guess and probably wrong. It may have more to do with average per capita income, but that’s also a guess.
Gov. Perry seems to be just another worthless chip off of the same dense Republican block as Gov. Bush.
But, but … our last president was from Texas.
Just wondering – but – does anybody IN TEXAS bring this type of hypocrisy out in their NEWSPAPER Articles and/or in their TEXAS TELEVISION NEWS REPORTING?
Or is the Texas News Media good ol’ “Lapdogs” like the entire country’s “News Media” was for George W Bush?
wedidit,
If the Texas print media are like the print media here in Georgia, they are about worthless. The AJC is a “reasonable” newspaper for the South in that they at least question the conservatives from time to time. However, the Savannah Morning News, the major newspaper for my area, is nothing but a conservative rag.
Could someone please tell me why the rest of the country should pay for Texas’ burnt down govenors mansion? Did they not have fire insurance? What the hell is up with that story?
Looks like Gov. Perry, like most of his malignant and obtuse GOP colleagues, seem to have seceded from reality.
Yeah, he is, isn’t he? He has always had problems with being linked to gayness.
We did have Molly and we still have her comrades in arms. Try the Texas Observer if you want to see real investigative reporting in action. If the rest of the MSM were even half as good, then we wouldn’t be in the mess we are. And Fox would have about two people watching them.
He accepted most of it, or at least had it shoved down his throat by the state legislature. He didn’t accept the money that would have gone to cover unemployment insurance because it would have meant that Texas would have had to change their laws so that they actually covered people who were unemployed. Then later he went and borrowed a lot more money from the federal government than the gift he had turned down to cover the difference in what the state had in its bank account and what it owed in unemployment payments.
Play the Marseilles, play it.
