On September 12th, in between the many chauffeuring duties that burden a mother of teenagers who don’t have their own driver’s licenses yet, I stopped in for while at a real, honest to gosh, grass roots health care rally.

Unlike the “teabag party” conceived by a lobbyist, and hyped by TV ad radio personalities like Glenn Beck and Michelle Malkin ,  this demonstration did not get pre event hype on the airwaves. Nope, it was generated by word of mouth, by people forwarding emails, by folks inviting their neighbors. (read the Malkin link- ’tis funny)

We had a Nor’easter last weekend on Long Island, yet I saw 100 hardy souls who cared more about accessible and affordable health care—with a real public option—than they did about the weather. That may not sound like a lot of people (the organizers claim a peak turnout of 150), but this was not a big “national” rally, this was just a local event in the suburbs.

Unlike the Astroturf teabaggers, the Long Island crowd didn’t have to inflate its numbers or use a photos from 1997 of another rally to try to fake people into thinking they had a better turnout than was real. REAL grassroots groups know that the impact they have comes from the commitment shown by REAL people who not only show up at rallies, but also make phone calls, write letters and talk to their elected representatives.

Imaginary people who didn’t actually show up at your Astroturf rally, well they don’t do so well on those follow up activities.
