Hey, Suz! Hi, Pups!
FWDiva
was a day with no clouds newton – take a look – kayakers on the bay
hey funny – well? have ya heard anything yet?
I agree Newt muggy as hell!
I read about Mary Travers last night on TPM. Bummer. We still have the recordings, though.
Sac is good. Gonna be hot soon though. Again.
wait! is that some kind of aquatic life form upper-right?
Hey FAMOUS Mary how ya doing??
i think that is part of an old pier newton
I am still sort of famous. Fame is fleeing. Specially tube fame.
Mary’s voice provided some of the beautiful moments of my life. Her harmony on “Freight Train” is still gorgeous. She lost her voice early unfortunately- but I will always remember her as whe was at her best.
fame
hey rw how ya been – nice to see your fonts
Not yet, nope!
I did send a thank-you email, though.
Feels like fall here.
FWDiva
True Mary .. but hey a moment under the glare of the kleig lights is way more than most of us every get…
I have no idea what you’re referring to.
At least it lasts more than fifteen minutes. Good article, by the way.
My late sister used to be in the same Grenwich village crowd way back then and got me listening to PP&M and many more of that era… She will be missed by many…
fingers and toes crossed for ya
hey cujo how ya doing?
Hi Suz
Not bad- If I measure my life in birdies and bogeys, then there have been more bogeys- but the birdies more than make up for it.
Thanks!
FWDiva
We interrupt these comments to bring you a word from Kanye West!
This pic in Suzanne’s spot.
kleig lights? online? I didn’t notice any.
behind and to the right of the second kayaker
hahahahahahahah
hey that guy – how ya doing?
How did you do that?
More fame.
Hiya All,
It is fall here. Leaves all over the ground, color in the trees, and pumpkins in the market. And students everywhere rushing back and forth. Beautiful weather, though.
hey ce – that sounds lovely. trees are starting to turn here – at least the big leaf maples are
Oh. They look like sticks to me…
Gawd, I love normal seasons.
Ah come on Mary… we know better(:>))
shoot i’ve not heard that in a long time *strolling down musical memory lane* thanks cujo
Oh, OK. Got all hot and bothered about something that happened three months ago. Guess I’m finally really losing my mind.
What an incredible voice she once had- and what a beautiful person she projected. Sad to see her go.
Hey Thatguy hope you are ready for the BBQ Meetup on 10-10-09!!
I will be smoking a Turkey starting the day before… takes about 18 hours to cook one of them birds.. And will have the Western BBQ, and the charcoal and gas Webers running!!
Be there or……
excellent rant cujo. part of why i try to visit your place daily – i love the way you write and what you write about.
I’ll do some ribs on my smoker – I’ll start them at about midnight and then go to bed. They’ll be done in the morning.
yeah Mary had a great voice and SANG GREAT HARMONIES AND SOLOS… like Leaving on a Jet plane….
dayam – wish i could be there but i’m saving up for teeth to eat those ribs with….
“How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.”
Yeats (of course)
Ohhh I did 6 racks of baby backs for mother-in laws 75th in the smoker using apple wood from their tree that had died(my gain)… they went over big… you should try Zea’s Thai Rib Sauce at http://www.Chefpauls.com.. To die for my friend to die for…
Why, blushing a little over here…
ooohhhh the beauty in those words
thanks rw
What happened to her voice? All I remember is that I didn’t see much of PP&M starting in the mid-70s.
rw, that’s one of my favorite poems.
hey eg – nice to see ya here on the dark side – how ya doing?
They still performed from time to time- but their music had lost it’s magic, and her voice had thickened- lost it’s range- the magic died early- but memory will live forever.
I’ve always loved it. Seemed appropriate somehow.
Mary Travers – RIP
Hi all! I’m never on LLN because home is Indiana, but I’m in the Bay area tonight and peekin’ in on the late crew. Fun being on with you in real time!
That was a great rant. I think that’s good for the BP, and probably your state of mind, too.
hey Suz don’t be talking about “The Dark Side” I am still wading my way through that book… not an easy read if you care about our country and the rule of LAW!! Well written but… DARK alright
i can almost hear them singing it in my head.
hey mr why – how are ya tonight?
One of my all time fav Gordon Lightfoot songs, and up there with my fav two versions of it.
My dawg, Mary Travers was IT. I said enuff last night. But, I loved her pipes, and her heart and soul.
Nice pick, Suz . . . thanks for the memory.
Mary, Suzanne,
I love fall, and I love the change of seasons. Can’t wait to drag out the sweaters and think about gingerbread!
Tonight we had the annual lecture at the Dittrick Museum of Medical History; and the re-opening of the contraceptive collection. Lots of women and men, young and old. Their site should be posting photos tomorrow.
ms molly! down in my old stomping grounds. hope the bay area is treating ya fine
Hey Suzanne, things are good, thanks! Beautiful picture of Oregon there.
hey margot – how are ya tonight?
Hey gang. What’s going on around here?
-G
ooooh – i remember last years.
and making apple pies and the smell of stew stewing on the range.
hey gregb – how’s nh tonight?
was such a nice surprise to look up from the computer and see them. i just had to run out onto the decck with the camera. it really was a lovely day today.
hey larue – one of mine too.
I Shall Be Released
Nice
Those smells of fall cooking only get better with age! After my love affair with Trader Joe’s peaches this summer, I’m moving on to find the perfect apple crisp. Maybe those Honey Crisps?
Thanks. Yes, it probably is good for the BP. I’ve encountered this particular attitude quite a bit, as you might have noticed.
Good golly! Glad you could join us.
Just saw the trailer for Michael Moore’s newest flick. Finally realized that’s Elizabeth Warren who leads the TARP oversight, such as it is…
FWDiva
ce – jennifer posted her pear apple crisp recipe on my facebook page… really easy and yummy!
Cool and dry…Swamp maples are starting to get red. Fall is on the way.
It almost makes me wanna scream.
-G
Honey crisps are an amaaaazingly good apple.
And it’s surprising how hard it can be to get good apples here in WA state…
FWDiva
seeing new england’s fall colors is on my list gregb. one of these years…
I go home on Saturday. Supposed to get really H-O-T here over the weekend into next week. I will be back in NW Indiana by then. LOVE it here, tho…
Will check! Tired and off for bed. Keep heart all — it just has to work out. I heart Jane.
And the price of them is just shocking, come on fellas! But great all the same.
Goodnight, ChristineE.
g’nite ce
Night, cujo, fight the good fight.
Night all
Early morning tee time
Good night Sweet Mary
Pleasant Dreams
Later, Suz.
hi msmolly, good to see you.
Don’t most Honey Crisps come from WA? I can get Michigan ones now — I’m only a couple miles from the state line — and they are just coming in season, but when I first discovered them they were from somewhere west like WA.
g’nite rw – enjoy the round
I think they’re a new variety…maybe the supply hasn’t stabilized yet. They used to be available here for only a few weeks a season.
I always have to buy them on sale…
FWDiva
Yes, see my 96
FWDiva
are they like those fuji apples? each one individually wrapped and expensive as all get out but ohmystars….
one more from Mary Travers
Simply beautiful…
“Rye whisky, Rye whisky, Rye whisky I cry
If I don’t get Rye whisky, I surely will die”
Yes…I’ve met up with it too.
Their season seems to be getting longer, too…or maybe it is only that they’re being grown in more places so the seasons are staggered. They are seriously the best apples I’ve ever eaten.
I think they’re better than fujis. Not usually indiv wrapped…those are the yellow pear apples…
Once ya get your toofers fixded, we’ll have to have a tasting.
FWDiva
Nope, just in regular bins or in little bags at the farmers’ market. Got my first bag last week. In places where it gets cold, you can store them in the garage for a long time. Or they keep in the fridge.
Another thing I seriously love is Minneolas, and those have a shortish season too. Just picked up some here at Trader Joe’s.
I think it’s partly that there are now enough to have some go into cold storage…steadier supply.
But yes, really the best. Bet they’d make nice applesauce and pie, too.
FWDiva
getting 4 more removed tomorrow funny – this time tomorrow i’ll have no teeth to the left of my left front tooth up top. gonna be a while before i can enjoy the freedom apples growing here in an uncooked state.
Mmmmmm I love minneolas, too.
FWDiva
Dark red

slice and dice…
PP&M doing If I Had A Hammer. Always loved this one.
big dog on the daily show – starting on the west coast….
Used to work with a guy who sliced his apples with a pocket knife. Sure hope his pockets were clean.
Always!!
Guess I’ll be seeing that tomorrow after it goes online. Don’t tell me how it ends.
What don’t kill ya makes ya stronger.
Salted? Apples? Hmmm…never thought of that. I don’t salt much.
I’ve never felt strong while experiencing food poisoning…
please don’t tell me how the story ends
I’d say it’s ironic that people who seem to know so little of the world are always so sure about things. But it really seems to be the reason they’re so sure.
evening, suz
i got some of busted’s roma tomatoes from his garden this year – first time in a long time that i ate salted tomatoes – they are yummy!
evening, nahant
You have to eat a peck of dirt before ya die…
Is that a Kris Kristofferson song? It sounds like something he’d write, and there’s an alternate version of that video with him in it.
evening all.
hey PPDCUS how goes it??
hey ppd how ya doing?
hey sunny – whazzup?
Just a reminder to all you LLN Pups… 10-10-09 will be the next Nor-Cal… Bear Creek meetup!! Same place as the last one in July.. We be BBQing for this one.. so bring something to scorch on the Que or something else to share with the other Pups… There will be a fresh, brined, smoked Turkey waiting here…
i’ve heard it was willie nelson and i’ve heard that it was ronnie milsap. google doesn’t say for sure that i could find
RETRACTED… google just said it was kris
Hi everyone….. watching cooking shows on PBS
I never was a big fan of theirs, but that song was amazing. I think it was something they truly believed and their performance reflected everything in themselves. At least that’s the way I prefer to think of it.
hey katy – how’s az tonight?
Have you had any fried green tomatoes? Nothing complex, just a little flour or cornmeal coating and fry away. Add any seasoning you like. Not at all like red tomatoes really. Another wonderful way to enjoy food.
Nuttin much up here. Late excuse — finishing the last chapter of Strip Tease.
hey mark h – how ya doing? never had the fried greens. one of these days…
Another song written by Ewan MacColl – Karan Casey singing Ballad of Accounting.
Appetite OK then?
and????
My best hits CD booklet says it was Kristofferson’s.
Doing better than Max Baucus. Heh. Nice to see you “here” again.
Hey, they have the tonight’s Daily Show online now!
Lassie lay down
nice..
wow that was fast – usually takes them an hour or so to get the show online. big dog got the big dog treatment.
Yes, he seems to have. Seems to be more bandwidth available, too.
Early Morning Rain
I had broswer burps.
But somewhere back earlier, someone said Travers lost her voice?
Not in any reality I’ve ever heard of, or known.
Got linky?
Mary had pipes and full range all her life, never suffered any breakdowns, and was heart and soul of the trio.
Like I said, I don’t KNOW of any loss of her voice, other than getting older, maybe.
But from her early 20’s thru her late 60’s?
She was all over it.
And so were the trio.
Just sayin.
az is just ducky……I think I’m going to turn my theme song into “I’ve got a hammer”…….. going to hammer that cancer to smithereens…..
it used to have Louis Armstrong’s It is a beautiful world…….
Quick survey:
1. How’s Obama and the Congressional Dems doing (0-100%)?
2. Will Health care reform be done by Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years?
3. Will we be out of Iraq by next summer’s end?
4. Will we be out of Afghanistan by next year’s end?
5. Will Bill O’Reilly survive his pro public option statement?
6. Will Michele Bachmann last a year without a psychiatric exam?
7. Will Sen. Grassley survive his own political party’s pressure ’til January?
8. Will Suzanne like fried green tomatoes?
that’s the video up top nahant :)
i hate it when i get the isp hiccups. had that going on last nite… dayam tubes were going up and down (and lagging behind the cable tv doing the same)
500 Miles
bit scratchy but hey… Joan did a cover of it!!
So tis still ear candy(:>))
katy – a different kinda hammer
crazy 8 ball says hazy try again
seriously mark – that would make a great seminal diary – exceptin that last one of course :)
She was the hammer. Always. Lord I miss her voice.
That sounds like a legal excuse. Incompetency. Cool. Let’s round up some atheists and stick up a bank.
Is that Ewan of The Pogues ya refer to? Yer spelling is a bit confusing.
Either way, love that clip, she’s got pipes, and I don’t know of her.
Thanks!
Turns out they did that because they cut out quite a bit of the interview to fit it into the 22 minutes. The entire interview is online as two separate YouTubes. And those appear to be on a server that’s overwhelmed.
Hmmm, the last one is important to the diary. The answer to that indicates something about how seriously I can take the answers to the preceding ones.
BTW, how can you refer to the crazy 8-ball and then say “seriously”? Sounds very un-serious to me. “You can not be serious!” — John McEnroe
I keep hoping the whole point of this Obama administration is to give some very seriously crazy Republicans one heart attack after another. They’ve been hopping mad, so he’s on the right track. I just figure achieving all those great goals he campaigned on would push ‘em over the edge. It isn’t fair, we haven’t seen Boehner crying in the House in how long now? Today I noticed McCain starting to develop a bulging neck artery, so that’s one. Who else in the Senate could be expected to go out of their mind during a long rant speech?
At least the policy change on missiles raised their blood pressure. But it takes creative thinking to come up with enough things to freak them out.
Maybe he should appoint Van Jones to some other ‘green’ position. Would that do it? Heh.
I like the way you think…
Another fine song of theirs. Not a song they/she sang I never liked.
As I’ve said last night and elsewhere, she was incredible.
I miss her, sadly. And her voice, and gift to us all for her and their patriotism.
Like Joan, and many others, Mary and The Trio led us out of the dark of the 50’s.
And they were THERE, in the streets, with their music, to lead us then.
You can’t BUY that kind of love of fellow human beings.
And I don’t CARE what Albert Grossman thought by making this Trio up.
I only know and believe, they trumped ANY marketing and profit that Grossman ever dreamed of making off of them.
They blew our minds, and most everyone’s. And did so, for social causes.
Harumph. *G*
i can imagine they are cujo….
and it would show they are paying attention
and the seriously was to show a break between being flippant and my gut response to your query. it would make a great diary dood
Clinton interview is available from the main page of the Daily Show now.
hope comedy central upgraded the food supplied to the hamsters running their servers – they are gonna be busy
Fixed it for ya.
I’m still waiting for RWCOLE to tell me about Traver’s breakdown in her voice.
Hmmm?
Love it. Never saw the film.
Hiaasen surely knows his corrupt politicians.
larue – rw said g’nite some time ago
goina get a bigger hammer after each of my ct scant results……..Going to hammer day and night, all over this land……
there sure does seem to be a bumper crop of ‘em nowadays
Well said Larue… I did live those times and sometimes it is as fresh as new driven snow in my mind.. They and all you mentioned loved our country and what it stands for! Not like so many on the right these days who only see profit for themselves and screw society in general… They are all lost…
Well then. That person loses.
*G*
I’m FEISTY about my music knowledge.
Also. ;-)
katy – and then there are silver ones
Peter, Paul & Mary – Hangman
Tis what many in the last Administration deserve!!
Katymine, I got a big ass bell I’ll ring for ya, all over this land.
Really, I mean that.
YOU get well, dammit!
careful nahant…. don’t wanna slip on that slope
Er, Kirsty MacColl, who sang Fairy Tale of New York with The Pogues, was Ewan MacColl’s daughter.
Nahant, I bow to your wow, and thanks for the gatherings.
I’ll be there, some day. With smoke and que.
Till then, thanks for doin what ya do!
Slainte Mhath! *G*
bingo.
I’ve read morality isn’t just taught & learned, it’s something we inherit in our genes. It’s like ancient knowledge being passed on. It’s like memories of the ancients of our tribe. It’s like a large rock we carry around to remind us not to run too fast or we’ll stub our toes. No emotions or judgment needed.
However, recent studies show ALL decisions require emotional involvement. If it doesn’t *feel* right it probably isn’t right. If it *feels* right it might well be. If you don’t *feel* one way or another about something, then you might have trouble making an important decision, making a choice that you would *feel* is right.
You go girl!!
Uh, I’m totally confused.
Ewan was the leader and founder of The Pogues.
Christy was the great grand daughter of the guy who wrote a play in the 1920’s.
At least that’s what I’ve been led to believe.
“Dirty Old Town” was a song in the play the great grand father wrote, that The Pogues made famous.
Christy, was in the band and in some performances OF that song.
She was NOT Ewan’s daughter, they were the same phookin age, for the most part?
Am I missin something? Or are you? *G*
Gotta go. Nite nite.
time for me to head out folks. blasted dental appt is in the forking morning and i have to take my predental antibodics an hour before my appt.
thanks for all the conversations and musical memories tonight.
g’nite all.
Larue I am with you she sang with those pipes till the end…Peter,Paul & Mary Live[6],If I Had a Hammer
Not sure what year but you can see she ain’t no spring chicken and still had her cords!!
I think you just defined sociopaths.
not trying too just the way it is… Reading “The Dark Side” and my blood is boiling…
but you are right the wheels of Justice sometimes turn very slowly and I am sure that someday Justice will catch up to that crew..
Ok, some how I mixed Shane McGowan with Christy, and her da, and GRAND da, who wrote the play.
So Christy is the GRAND daughter of the man who wrote the play?
Or did I add a generation?
And Karan Casey used to sing with Solas, but went out on her own years ago.
Someday Larue you WILL make it!! And we shall celebrate in spades!!
Oh and when ya gonna send down that 1/2 goat for the Que??
Elmore is leaving on a jet plane tomorrow at 8am……. jet plane….. will you wait for me?
(((Suz))) Will be good to have that behind you.
I offered my bad . . . but wasn’t she the GRAND daughter of the man who wrote the play, that had Dirty Old Town in it?
My bad, mixing her family with Shane.
But yeah, youtube has her doing both Dirty Old Town and Fairy Tale Of New York with Shawn and The Pogues.
Grand music it is . . . *G*
(((katy)))
nite all.
I think there’s at least some reason to think that at least part of what becomes our sense of morality is inherited. How much, who can say? But if you’ve ever had an emotional reaction to something you experienced or did that you felt was wrong, you can feel something that goes beyond a thought process.
A few years ago I was listening to a WWII fighter pilot recalling his experiences on a PBS show. He flew P-47s in Europe, which were mostly used as ground attack aircraft. He described seeing the German soldiers he was attacking, knowing that he’d killed them, and it was clear that even fifty years later he was still experiencing it. Later, he said that when he was shipped home, one of the first things he did was go bird hunting. He said he shot one or two, and then a horrible sensation hit him. He said he never killed another living thing after that day. It wasn’t a religious experience or a philosophical one, just this gut-level instinct that he never wanted to do that again.
So I think that there’s something there that’s beyond philosophy or experience. Call it empathy or whatever. But it’s clear most of us have it to some degree.
It’s football season again, isn’t it?
Goodnight, Sunny.
Speak of activists Larue Peter, Paul & Mary – Washington Peace March – 1971
Goodnight, Suzanne.
Shane MacGowan was one of the founders of The Pogues. Ewan MacColl was of an earlier vintage, born in 1915, died in 1989. MacColl also wrote Dirty Old Town, amongst others.
how very true…
P-47 Thunderbolts?
Radial engine, huge armor, and big guns and ability to dive bomb and strafe with their cannon’s.
That man had a gift to survive, bless him, after the killin.
The killin, it’ ain’t so easy, no matter HOW ya do it.
Not if ya got a conscience.
Ask any sniper.
Good night folks.
I’m on the steroids again which means little or no sleep
Getting all my meds adjusted and system cleaned out …… after having more than 15 of the side effects of IV Torisel then it is time for a break…..
Ask any War Vet… that is you can get him to talk about it at all… have known many and none liked or would speak of those times…
MacColl wrote a play, that Dirty Old Town was a part of.
As I said, I mixed up Shane with MacColl.
My bad.
And I thought Christy was his GRAND daughter. Not his daughter.
I’m a big Pogues fan, I got some stuff wrong, I apologize.
But I got SOME of all of this right . . *G*
Nite foks, thanks Nahant, and others, for the chattin . . .
Slainte Mhath!
Goodnight, MrWhy. And Larue.
I know the steroid crap when asthma gets the better of me.. hate that prednisone crap…
I am sure you need the break Katy… Me I am on an increasing dose of Gabapentin.. had been on 1200mg a day and have to go up to 4800mg… hopefully that dose will lessen the daily pain
I have from that MRI contrast last Oct. 7th… Can’t believe it is coming up on year since that freaking day!!
Agreed, none I know or knew from Vietnam would. And I LIVED there, up till ‘63. As a child.
And THAT was not a door opener for conversation with those I went to hi school with, who came back.
Not even those from my own home town, and hi school, back then.
Still isn’t. I don’t know any soldiers from Iraq 1 or Iraq 2.
So, I don’t know what they think other than what I read from them in the blogs.
I gather, the experience is still shit, and hellish, and a real brain fuck.
May some god help them when they come home. Cuz war and the military have twisted them.
And it’s HELL for them to come home and try to adapt to peace.
Bless them all for their travails, it’s hell. And one we civilians will not know.
SOME of us, might intuit, but we can’t know. Not unless our ass is on the line 24/7 somehow.
With that, I bid bon nuit.
nite Larue!! and other Pups… guess it is time for me to crawl in next to my sweetie….
Very true Larue… I only knew those from WWII. Korean and Vietnam… nary a one had much to say about their time..
poof…
Larue, my father is a WWII vet, survived the battle on tarawa which was really bad. He never talked of it until Michael Moore released FII movie…..He said it was really bad katy…..damn steriods….. Now I can’t spell worth shit
Goodnight, nahant.
Think I’m going to head out, too. Goodnight, all.
I haven’t heard many stories, either. Vets seem reluctant to talk about it, because no matter how much you think you might be able to imagine what it’s like, there’s always going to be something that shocks you. They know that, so they mostly talk amongst themselves, if they talk at all.
since I’m the last person standing…… thank you suzanne for all the vids by peter, paul and mary
Sorry to leave ya by yourself. If you’re looking for some infotainment, that Daily Show link seems to work now (one of my earlier comments). Goodnight.
Dad briefly talked about when I was in the 20’s and then gave me a book called Battle Cry by Leon Uris a guy across the road who did document the battle …. that how he told me ….
Nite Cujo
Brings chills. First song I ever learned to sing and play on the guitar. Seemed like a long time ago until I played this clip. Thanks.
