I agree with President Carter that racism is playing a role in recent outbursts against President Obama. During President Obama’s speech on the status of health care reform, some members of congress engaged in a public display of disrespect. While one Representative hurled the now infamous “you lie” insult at the President, others made their lack of interest known by exhibiting rude behavior such as deliberately yawning and sending text messages ….
Various polls prior to the election indicated that between five and ten percent of Americans would never vote for an African American president. That number, of course, only includes those who actually admitted to their prejudice. How many others harbored such feelings but did not respond honestly when asked the question? And how many people oppose Obama’s plan because the President is African American?
Lots.

Well, this will probably end Bill Cosby’s being quoted favorably by the right wing. They luvs them some Cosby when he’s trashing poor folks and such but not so much when he turns his words back on them.
No doubt about it. Large swaths of the U.S. are still a cracker nation. Of course the corporate media is aghast that anyone would say many in the land are racists. The white power structure has used racism for centuries as a wedge issue and means of control instilling in poor uneducated whites of their superiority to others. A strain that runs deep in the American psyche. Electing it’s first President of color does not mean racism no longer exists.
It’s sure making some of the more virulent scum rise to the top, however.
True, all that. But still makes me really proud…Inauguration day to remember…
Sadly, too many of our struggling classes have little to prove to themselves that they have some means of survival, and in working neighborhoods often that has been made an issue of race. Better access to education and healthcare would help make those barriers fall.
Peter Schiff says on AM Joe that he will be running against Dodd. Then he said that the government is the cause of all the high health care prices, causing Scarborough to say “sometimes gov’t involvement is good.” Schiff then claims his best quality that would make him a good senator is his lack of experience.
…racism is playing a role… …others made their lack of interest known by exhibiting rude behavior such as deliberately yawning and sending text messages ….
I guess congressmen of the opposing party have been racist against old white men for as long as there has been congress. I’ve seen that type of behavior in every televised address – both parties.
The biggest fear of a corrupt ruling elite is education. The more education a person has the more likely they will be liberal, progressive, radical, anti-fascist, anti-racist, believe in science and evolution. Why is education in the U.S. underfunded? It’s a powerful means of control. Provide just enough education so people can get a crappy job but no more. Keep the people undereducated and superstitious and the easier it is to control them like marionettes.
“No matter what I do or say, you’ll call it racist anyway.”
The VAST majority of those who oppose THE POLICIES of the President ARE NOT RACIST. This is a BAD move on the part of Obama supporters and proponents of health care reform.
What does Olberman and those who advance his screed hope to accomplish.
5 to 10% of American are racist? Yes.
That means 95 – to 90% are NOT.
The only people who buy into the ‘birthers’ crazy delusions are ‘truthers’.
‘Truthers’ are embraced by the left…while the vast majority of maninstream conservative opinion soundly REJECT the birthers.
And what about those who called Bush a liar? Compared him to Hitler? Wrote fictitious fantasies about Bush’s assination?
Were those attacks racist?
This is going to turn the tide of public opinion towards support of government-controlled health care?
Riiiight.
Great piece from Keith! Thanks, BT.
Happy Constitution Day to one and all.
I see the under-the-bridge dwellers have arrived early today.
93.7% of all statistics are made up.
1/3 of convervatives in NJ think that Obama is or might be the antichrist. Teh crazy is much more widespread than you give credit.
I recall a conversation with a quite decent woman from Houston last year — upper class (wife of oil exec) and a lot of fun to be with. She averred in the course of our conversations that she had bought a gun, because if Obama won she fully expected the ‘blacks to take revenge.’ There is a lot of projection out there.
LOL.
So where do you stand on school choice?
And IMO, the more educated a person becomes…the more LIBERTARIAN they become.
Do. Not. Feed.
I missed the earlier thread, but scraping missile defense in Europe is quite a nice way to start the day.
The shrewd move to stroke the conservatariat by having dinner with Brooks, Krauthammer and co.
at George Will’s McMansion seems to have worked out well:
Although I think there’s a portion of the racist right that is probably crazy in their hatred, most of them are just ignorant and frightened of “the other”. They cling to the known as if they are stranded on fearful little islands. Given the chance, I believe most would soften their opinions.
Afraid to debate? Go back to watching MSNBC.
KO’s most powerful comment regarding Joe Wilson’s outburst:
“They brought signs in it’s anticipation.”
There was a diary here that noted no Republican heads turned in the direction of Wilson, as though they knew the comment was coming. While Dem heads snapped towards his vocal direction.
No Republican heads turning to the disruption and Republicans ready with signs?
And the apology was, “I meant no disrespect?”
I know when to get my shovel and boots on.
Great “context” analysis by KO.
Carter is correct. And by the way, I have seen white supremacy signs at some of the teabagger events stating, “White is might.”
When will people get a clue…Our President is biracial. He does not hate.
G’Morning all !
“That One” agreed to scrap missile defense after meeting with Putin, or so I had heard. That prolly went a long way in ending the new arms race that BushCo had started with the Russians.

Thinkin about Mary Travers and how she brought grace to the fight.
This is good news. Teabaggers want more public transportation. They are angry that there was not more Dee Cee Subway transportation for their 2 million racist anti-health care march.
Some of the protesors had to take privatized transportation, taxi cabs.
Citizen Indie:
Here at FDL the old rationalizations for hate and fear don’t get a lot of play because this is a reality zone where the truth and people’s experience with it rule the argument. The attacks on Obama and the ideology of the political party that is making the attacks are motivated by racism, fear and the desire to allocate the resourses of the state to a priviledged few. The attackers are racist and anti-democratic and want to use the power of the state to disenfrachise a majority of people. That’s the truth and all your pathetic blustering won’t change it and if you think before you dump more unitelligable hogwash on us, you may avoid makin’ more of a fool of yourself than you already have.

Too funny. Want more socialist funded transportation.

Oh com’mon, are you guys serious about this? A couple years ago Democrats boo’ed Bush during his State of the Union address. Remember Tip O’Neal….jeeze he did thing that would make what happened to Obama look like child’s play. There is nothing racist here, nor was the “you lie” verbage.
I think the liberals are starting to realize the health care debate is going on life support, so its time to throw the race card out. Even if any of these things were racist (which they weren’t), I thought Obama was above all this and was going to bring all the parties togethers. That apparently fell apart as well considering he can’t keep the Dems together. Funny thing with Obama is the last time we were this divided as a nation was just prior to the Civil War.
Years ago, I had a Mary Traverse solo album. This song was on it:
THIS IS MY SONG
This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover-leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh, hear my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.
We sing it at church sometimes, and I always think of her. I always will.
Would “intelligent” Republicans claim that African American descendants of slavery harbor feelings of racism towards White Americans also claim that the descendants of the victims of the Holocaust harbor feelings of antisemitism toward neo-Nazis? If their ancestors had been enslaved and murdered by white Americans, what would they feel toward white red-neck hillbilly crackers still talking about Secession and waving rebel flags and actively promoting American neo-Nazi groups? Is there a black KKK? Is there a black neo-Nazi movement in America? Are there black politicians suggesting that their states secede from the United States? Are there any Country Clubs in America who don’t accept white members? Are there literally thousands, perhaps millions, of towns and cities throughout America where white men and women are pulled over by the police simply because they’re driving through a predominantly black neighborhood? Are there any “intelligent” Republicans left?
I forgot my snark tag on that. I’ll just leave it “public”.
Citizen Kurt:
Please spend some time thinkin’ about the term “false equivalence” before you dump anymore of it on us here in reality world.
Black Panthers come to mind. Bet Reginald Denny Would have an interesting viewpoint on this topic. Bet I can ask some old Irish how they were treated when they came to the US.
Um, OK! Somehow I get the feeling that it wasn’t on accident that Carter came out at the time he did and made the statement he made. Surprised it wasn’t Bill Clinton.
Scroll and call. Or scroll and make a donation.
I can just go back a few days http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/80752026/
There are no Black Panthers in America today. This isn’t the 60s. Today, the KKK and neo-Nazi groups are proliferating. If you’re going to disagree with me, at least offer something of substance about today. If you want to reference history, how would you defend the blatantly racist history of white America that began with slavery and is still with us today?
Obama won the Presidency you know. Yea, we’re all racist who don’t support the giant give-away to corporate world. I don’t in any way support the planned healthcare/bonanza bill. If that makes me racist, so be it. BTW, the teabagger references are a slam at gays in my book. Why not just call the protesters faggots?
Old Irish came to America voluntarily and worked to improve their lives. Old blacks were kidnapped and brought to America in chains and forced to work in abject poverty with no hope of improving their circumstances.
Heterosexual people can teabag too. It only requires one set of family jewels and one mouth – male or female.
I’m so pleased to see Maureen Dowd, Jimmy Carter, Bill Cosby and others bring race to the fore front. We need to route out the birthers, Dobbs. Becks, Limfats and Hannity’s of America . These monsters make a living by thriving off of hate and ignorance.
I’m not crazy about booing during presidential addresses to congress, but it is a sign of disapproval with something which is being said. It is not an accusation of lying. An accusation of lying used to be the basis for challenging to a duel. Later, it was easily a basis for cane whipping. Obviously, house and Senate rules were established to preclude such events.
If you think about it, I think your own reaction to someone booing you might be different from someone calling you a liar. In effect, I am booing your earlier statement, but I’m not calling you a liar.
Thank you, RU4862 and osage and others who respond quickly with such sanity. Quite often racism is insidious in the modern mind. Even the gentlest person sometimes is blind to it and it needs to be pointed out.
I was coloring once as a child with a black playmate and we both noticed the beige color was named “flesh”. Some of these things have changed over the generations, some are still unhealed wounds.
Check this http://newsbusters.org/blogs/n…..ng-station
Black Panthers are alive and well my friend
Actually the slaves were purchased by whites from blacks that had conquered and sought to sell them into slavery. You can make the argument that this may not have happened without demand, but it still happened.
You are correct about the Irish however. I was trying to make the point that they were treated like crap when they first got here. This obviously changed once the Kennedy’s took over MA.
Because that is what Republicans and rightwingers do. I have been listening to Barney Frank jokes for 20 odd years.
-G
Racism is alive and well with all ethnicity(s), blacks are not the sole proprietors of racism. As a matter of fact, racism becomes more abundant the more people throw these ridiculous race cards and the media gets a hold of them.
Since you were reminiscing your childhood, I was thinking a couple weeks back how sad it was that the ‘N-word’ has made a come back. The ironic thing is that it wasn’t whites that brought it back, it was black rappers. This was a word that has almost been eradicated due to generational change, now it is alive and well for another young generation.
Well, when Barney’s boyfriend was running a male whorehouse out of their apartment, it is really hard not to make jokes.
What sucks about this is I didn’t even know what tea-bagging was before you guys started talking about it. Damn disgusting.
With all due respect to your deep-throating Republican propaganda about who the truthers are, if you think it’s the “Left” embracing the paranoid truthers, then you can’t or don’t want to handle the truth.
The truthers are Ron Paul follower types and other obviously authoritarian rightists, who are faux libertarians who say they want government to not intrude on them, but who if in power wouldn’t stop short of trying to make Christianity the official religion, English the only allowable language, are in favor of forced childbirth with no exceptions, and would tell people what they could and couldn’t do in their homes and bedrooms. They overlap with the fundamentalist Christianists in this way, though are separate from them. They are also prone to a dictatorship, if it was THEIR dictatorship. They see things in black and white, and then begin exaggerating from there.
If you don’t know this about the truthers, which is so obvious from listening to the truthers’ radio shows and reading their books and other warped opinionation, then you really don’t know what you’re talking about.
Over at the Atlantic, TNC has an eye opening take on the racism coming out of the village.
http://ta-nehisicoates.theatla…..e_fonz.php
Didn’t know what a truther is till now, appears to be another liberal term.
Well News, the way things are going, you are not going to have to worry about Christianity. The Muslim faith is taking over world wide, so we’ll soon see how you fair with that dictating your actions.
I don’t want anyone else’s religion dictating my actions, but this conversation is degenerating. Regarding your original point, I think the evidence is that the Obama Administration is intent on not being distracted by all of the shiney objects and red herrings. In essence, I think they understand the wisdom of not feeding trolls on the larger scene. Have a nice day.
The trolls came to piss in the Lake early this mornin’.
Too bad they missed the Lake and hit their Shoes …
Namaste SD !
Faux news is your reference source for truth?! Faux news is teabaggers, birthers and deathers and you’ve got the gall to refer to what they say as fact?

Hey, Petro!! I was tryin’ to think of something about their shoes.
Had to take my friend Joe back to the eye doctor this mornin’ to see how the cataract surgery went yesterday afternoon. Says he sees better than he did 5 years ago. There was some concern before the surgery that the retina would tear, which is fairly common in folks with detached retinas. Seein’s how he only has one good eye this was quite the concern. Long drive to and from and the space cadet left his eye drops and instructions in my truck so I had to take them to him. I’d have ended up back at his house anyhoo. He couldn’t read the instructions or the labels on the teeny bottles so I had to copy the instructions in large print and mark the bottles with big letters with magic marker.
Real news sources would make they little heads explode.
Well, you know who tinkles on his own shoes … *g*
You’re a great friend, SD. Detached Retinas are trouble … glad to hear everything went well.
Tell Joe to remember to take those drops.
It’s great when you hear right-wingers say things like, “I don’t know, I just don’t trust him” or “I always just used to trust my government, but now…” and “I’d *like* to give him the benefit of a doubt, but some of things he’s said, I just don’t know…”, because these are, basically, expressions of bigotry!
Do you know what it means when you have an emotionally negative reaction to someone and always assume the worst about them but have no logical source for that animosity? It means you’re prejudiced! Congratulations!
When you think your group deserves a double-standard, that’s called being prejudiced. You don’t get to disguise it by insisting the media endorse and enforce it silently. It still counts as bigotry.
Yeah – that was a favorite of my dad’s. Well, the Sibelius really but still. Thanks for a smile.
This Kurt fella seems to be doing a good job of annoying a lot of people.
I’ll bet he’s glad we don’t respect freedom of speech here the way they do at LGF or Freeperville, where comments from liberals are quickly deleted and their accounts quickly erased. You know us liberals, we can’t handle dissent. That’s why all his comments have been deleted, Right, Kurt? We don’t respect diversity of opinion the way the right does. After all, during Bush’s 8 years in office, Republicans always cultivated bipartisanship and were always respectful to the minority Democrats, right? We should all strive to be so respectful. Maybe the next time a Republican veteran runs for office, I can wear a purple-heart band-aid to show my respect for his service!
How right you are!! best comment yet
He was a premie so had them in both eyes. Lost his sight in the left eye in 97 after his golf ball hit him just below the eye. That day’s a story unto itself. When I turned him on to tigers he learned real fast to follow instructions to the letter. Plus he can’t play golf with his golf league if he can’t see. Now that he can drive safely he owes a bunch a guys rides to the course.
When he was born it was SOP to put a premie into an oxygen rich environment which, later science revealed, causes the retinas to become detached. Something like that.
” . . . within our culture we have a subculture which is literally a fifth column of insanity that is bread from birth, through home school, Christian school, evangelical college, whatever to reject facts as a matter of faith.”
Frank Schaeffer on Rachel Maddow show last night
Quote: “Are there any intelligent Republicans left?”
All the “intelligent Republicans” have “left.
Was there ever that many to begin with?
Kinda funny. This coming from the party that is self-destructing faster than the Republicans did under 8 years of Bush. We’re only 9 months in and the Repub aren’t even trying!! Hate to see what would happen if we had some “intelligent” Republicans
