Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes – I’ve Had The Time Of My Life.
What’s on your mind?
zed…
nicely done nahant
Hi Suz!! 10-10 is still on!! How about you??
Hey, Suz! Hey, Nahant! Hey, Pups!
What’s shakin’?
FWDiva
i’m doubtful nahant – my pennies are going to teeth – am having 4 pulled friday. :(
hey funny – hows seattle tonight?
Ouch Suz… best wishes… hopefully the rest of the pups can make it!! We plan to smoke a brined Turkey….
Patrick Swayze gone. Makes me feel kinda, umm, experienced.
And what was the point of practicing dance in a lake?
hey cujo – better experienced than old :)
fork — and doing bbq too. right before my double nickle b/day.
sigh
10-10?
Well, tonight, I’m very frustrated with a good friend who I think is inexcusably cynical about US Politics. “It’s always been that way…it’s never going to change…I’m not at all surprised about Obama’s sell-out…”
Blah-dy friggin blah.
Yeah? Well of course nothing will change if everyone is cynical and decides nothing matters. My point was that 1) the status quo is WRONG and that 2)it MATTERS that we’re being basically lied to and sold out by a smooth-talking politician-IOW it’s NOT OK that what the president is doing and sometimes saying now is pretty exactly opposite of how he campaigned.
GRRRRRRRRR!
FWDiva
hey ofg – how ya doing dood? how’s the wing?
Awww, that sucks, Suz.
You got some nice soups ready to go? Smashed ‘taters? Pudding?
Hope they’ll at least give you good drugs for the pain. Oh…but prune juice is usually a good idea with narcotics…
FWDiva
That’s what I’m thinking.
how was the interview today?
Meetup here in Redwood… BBQ version this time.. of course you havta bring your own vittles to throw on the grill…
falling out of “The Lift” wouldn’t hurt as much?
wet shirts?
FWDiva
nahant is having a fdl meetup at his place 10/10 in redwood city ca
Hiya Nahant & suz
sliding ya a shot down the bar – ya been me fair and square
Still sore. Whatya gonna do?
hey ppd – how’s the south south bay tonight?
The point I try to make is that not all politicians are dishonest, and that if you assume they are, it’s the dishonest ones who win. People rise or sink to the expectations we have for them, if only because those who can’t live up to our expectations get un-elected.
At least, they do if enough of us have that expectation. Unfortunately, we live in a time of exceedingly low expectations.
been there :( just gotta keep on keeping on.
sux
Hmmm. Physics. Maybe …
PPDCUS how is it going? you still up for the next meetup??
i wanted to use this video but every utube of that scene is embedding disabled :(
A dud. I didn’t realize that this was a 50% FTE position until after I’d confirmed the interview. And the hiring manager hadn’t confirmed with me that I realized it was indefinitely 50% and she wanted someone long term.
So, it was a lot of “sorry” “no, I’m sorry, too” “good luck” “yeah, you, too” just a misunderstanding.
But I had to go thru with it if only for a required “Job Contact” for the week (for the unemployment).
But I thought Monday went well. I enjoyed it surprisingly much…Big Boss asked at least one really thought-provoking scenario question, and everyone else had reasonable, thoughtful interview questions, too.
I hope I’m still “in there” as a candidate. I’m not very good at reading reactions, and I tend to be pretty honest–especially about weaknesses.
FWDiva
Uh oh! Wha’d ya do?
FWDiva
no earthquakes, yet suz — but this weather reminds me of October ‘89
I’m doing a family thing for 4 days in Manhattan mid-December. I need suggestions for things to do and see and places to eat. Definitely want to see Christmas displays in store windows and stuff.
funny how did ya feel the second ya walked out of the interview? for me, that immediate gut check afterwards usually is fairly accurate.
Yay Suz!
I’m ready to party, nahant — just send over the date, time & details
Hey Suzanne,
“Nobody puts Baby in the corner,” — bless you Patrick Swayze.
Thanks. That’s exactly what I couldn’t articulate.
It was particularly frustrating since “she started it” by telling our other friend that “she hates Obama now”. I said, no, it’s policies and being a weasel and sell-out after record numbers of ordinary Americans contributed so much time and money to getting him elected.
But this is the same friend who thinks bloggers don’t do any real journalism and that blogs are just, basically, people’s little diaries…
Love her dearly, but sometimes she’s so DENSE!
FWDiva
I always thought being honest was a good idea. They’ll find out about weaknesses anyway. Of course, I’m none too good at figuring out how interviews have gone, either. I know what I like when I’m trying to hire people, but my tastes aren’t widely shared.
fork *knocking wood* i forking h-a-t-e earthquakes
Torn rotator cuff, left shoulder last Christmas.
hey ce how’s ohio tonight?
hey margot – how ya doing tonight?
10-10 same place as last time… just bring something to burn on the grill.. or if ya come early enough for the smoker… I will also have the western BBQ running and the Webers both charcoal and gas… need to start that early in the AM to have it ready by afternoon…. I have some really nice apple wood that is just dying to be used!!
Loving Jimmy Fallon and Alan Cummings in particular… (sp?)
I used to have trouble articulating, too, so I wrote about it. Sometimes that helps. Then again, sometimes I can’t remember what I wrote.
I guess I’m lucky. Every job interview I have ever had, (and I can count them on one hand) has been to determine if I want to work for them.
only 50 miles from Parkfield, northern cal’s mini-shakeytown
yer killin’ me.
It was like, wow, I could really be happy working with these people.
I had mis-read the clock in my last group interview and was surprised when I got back to my car and it was an hour later than I thought.
Oh, and I was really happy that a couple of people I talked to had worked with a guy I’d worked with earlier this year…and we could sing his praises in harmony. It was nice to be able to say “yeah, he’s GREAT. AND he’s on my list of references.”
So…we’ll see. It wasn’t so much “I am in-VINCE-able” as “hey, I think I really did OK!”
FWDiva
just drying to be used, eh?
Ow.
Sorry about that.
FWDiva
I am, very sad about the death of Patrick Swayze. He was beautiful.
nah just love to BBQ with good friends!!
Fine, warm weather here. I taught my little beagle to sit up and beg when I switched to a different kind of dog treat (kind of like a slim jim).
She sits by me looking up expectantly a lot. “Now? Now can I do the trick and get a treat? Huh huh huh?” lol
1600 miles from my house, which is only a 16 hour drive.
sounds promising funny. did they say when they would get back to ya?
GAAAAAHHH! NOOOOOOO!!!
Loma Prieta was one scary MoFo of a quake. NEVER want to do that again. EVER!
FWDiva
He really was, wasn’t he? I loved The Outsiders.
token loves his pupperoni – he knows the sound of that bag getting opened and starts the i’m cute tail wagging
that would be some speedie driving OFGuy
Hey, OFG
I know a recent transplant from Manhattan.
What kinds of stuff do you like to do? I’ll pick her brainz and email the results to Suzanne…
FWDiva
I only knew the movies Dirty Dancing and Ghost, though I saw him in many other dance routines.
It is purely a pleasure trip. Sightseeing, eating and perhaps a decent club.
To friends recently departed, and to Patrick Swayze.
I only hit the high spots. I have to slow down at night because my headlights start bending out toward the ditches.
Yes, you sure you didn’t mean kilometers there, OFG?
hey prostrated – how ya doing tonight?
To being a good liver instead of having one.
Heh,
I think it’s definitely an art to asking questions that really get at what you want to know, but aren’t overly intimidating and give people a chance to put their best foot forward.
I’m very fond of “what do/did you like best about…?” questions, myself.
Haven’t done much interviewing, but having had marked differences of opinion about candidates, I think I’ve been more concerned with technical ability and potential than finding the “perfect” personality fit. It’s hard for me to accept that what I like to call Tail Wagging carries so much weight with some folks.
What do you usually look for, and why do you think that’s different from a lot of other managers?
FWDiva
Well Pups we are getting

Season 4 disc 3.. so nite Pups!!
g’nite nahant – go get caught up before the new season of lost starts :)
No. It’s a running joke I have with my dispatcher. She once asked me how fast I could get to Rock Springs, Wyoming and I told her it’s 1100 miles so it would be 11 hours. She said I was full of shit so I told her to quit asking such stupid questions.
Hey nahant!
I’m lost, baby!
Chris
I’ve never been a manager, just a senior technical guy. What I look for is familiarity with the field, not the particular technology (that’s a plus), ability to learn and adapt, and some demonstrated interest in what they do. If you don’t have those traits, you’re usually not going to work out well in any branch of engineering. If you do, you can usually make yourself useful.
how’s ok ofg?
Goodnight, nahant.
I have a question. Why are teabaggers confusing ACORN with the Chamber of Commerce? Every self respecting pimp knows where to go for the down low 411 on tax dodgy stuff and high end hooker johns hang out.
Everything cross able is crossed here funny.
Loma Prieta was far from the Big One — but we were all shook up for awhile
Darwin, Mark Twain, Fundamentalism… I can’t believe I missed the conversation on the last post. Oh, for shame!
FD, you get the job?
Well, I find the “Access” line of guide books are pretty informative.
I was there one summer, but only for about 3 nights. The Circle Cruise was fun, but it was Summer Solstice night. I don’t know if they run in the winter. There should be zillions of potential concerts to attend. There’s a city bus that does a loop from mid-town down to Battery Park and back–it goes past Ground Zero.
The HighLine elevated RR has opened some great, cleaned up, restored park space.
The Met/Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall often run tours of the facility.
The “big” Met Museum and The Cloisters are amazing, but I’m a museum person. The bus ride from big Met out to Ft Troyon Park (very North tip of the island) is pretty long, but goes all the way up 5th Ave, across the top of Central park and through Harlem/Morningside Heights. It’s a good way to see a lot without spending a fortune on cab fare.
I’ll see what my friend has to say about clubs and eateries.
I think it would be very difficult to be bored in Manhattan. Maybe disappointed, depending on expectations, but NOT bored.
FWDiva
Wet. Been raining for about a week.
be glad he’s waaaaay more polite than Buster and his cat greenies…or anything that sounds like the greenies pouch!
FWDiva
Do these guys look like scholars? I’m surprised they knew how to get to DC and back.
hey word – how ya doing tonight?
Shook well enough to take down the 880 double decker highway.
Water arobics, water ballet, slow motion work thru resistance to instill muscle memory.
Basic training.
*G*
because they want to
Hiya Suzanne. All’s quiet on the Western Front.
Isn’t this the end of the rainy season for you guys?
Well, I think that’s what EVERYONE should really look for. Too bad most HR and HR-indoctrinated types have attention spans much too short to figure this out.
Yeah, I’ve got a chip on my shoulder about what I call “Short Attention-Span Hiring.” What’s your point? ;-)
I think us technical and scientific types, esp with a lot of education and/or experience tend more toward what you describe and much less toward HR-oriented, “dress for success” conventional wisdom.
FWDiva
soon it will be freezing rain ofg
Thanks, Sunny
I really appreciate it!
FWDiva
It was a rhetorical question. Like who gets more welfare, ACORN or Chamber members?
What’s a cat greenie? We don’t know nothing about cat greenies here.
Yes and yes.
I’ve always had a strong, perhaps irrational, fear of being buried alive in a collapsed building.
It was bad enough that the nearest exit door jammed shut back in ‘89 and a bunch of us had to walk halfway through the building to go out another way. But when we saw that the brick facade around the door we’d wanted to use had fallen down, we didn’t feel so bad.
The traffic jam getting from Palo Alto back to Sunnyvale was a whole ‘nother ball of wax. Sheeeesh.
FWDiva
Yes, unfortunately, we usually don’t make the decisions (depends on the organization, but in my experience ..) Good luck getting past HR.
BTW, I just love the term “Human Resources”. I feel like asking how the herd culling is going. Probably wouldn’t like the answer, though.
hey sunny – sorry if i missed ya coming in
hey larue – how’s life post berry fest?
Hey! That’s MY line! *G*
Hope you go, have fun and whoop it up hoss.
I went to a fest in Parkfield a few years back, at the fairgrounds.
Trains, cows, smells, all during the fest.
Yep, that’s quake country, you betcha!
Cat Greenie? Is that weed for cats?
Per person? Chamber members.
whoops – neverminding…
Greenies are doggie treats that come in a formulation and size for cats.
They’re crunchy and supposed to help keep their teeth clean. Not so much in Buster’s case (poor baby has not-so-good toofers), but he loooooves the taste. Roasted chicken is his favorite!
Apparently there are some reports of choking or intestinal blockage due to poor chewing. Buster hasn’t had a problem. The one “danger” site I checked out had a raw-food, holistic, unprocessed pet foods bias, which is fine, but it seemed like there was probably a bit of an agenda there.
FWDiva
they also make cat greenies
Cat Greenie is people! It’s People!!!
I love ACORN. Worked with them for health care reform a couple of years ago. Hard working, ethical people. that is why the powerful hate them.
Alert! Ron and I are going to be featured on Huffpo tomorrow. It is about our health care story and getting divorced so I can claim survivors benefits from my first husband. I can do this when I turn 60 in November.
LOL!
people and mouse heads.
neverminding again….
As was said, Yer Killin Me!
Sigh, sounds grand.
Good food, libations, and progs.
Alas, time staff and money prohibit my attending.
One of these days . . . .
Wish I could send a half a goat for you to work with!
*G*
woohoo – hot diggidity dayam – i’ll gonna start talking about how i knew ya before you were famous
Anybody see TRMS, the guy who stood outside Oba’s appearance with 2 loaded guns? WTF?
Ya didn’t miss me, I didn’t speak. Lousy manners.
Still grinning re: successfully posting at LaFiga. Either the techs made changes or upgrading my firefox did the trick.
Big, bad design flaw in that case. Ya gotta bind your bundles of re-bar together, or they just collapse like cooked spaghetti.
It also knocked a roadway panel off the upper deck of the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge.
FWDiva
Be ready for Our Lady Of Concentration Camps to unleash her flying monkeys on you.
Never saw him in Road House, with Sam Elliott (bastard married my girl Sam did)?
Nah, that’s catnip, aka Kitteh Pot.
FWDiva
Night.
*poof*
Funny thing is a friend of mine is on Huffpo today. He is trying to get divorce made illegal in Cali but it is a spoof. He is making fun of the Prop 8ers. His name is John Marcotte. Here is the link.
i think it was the firefox upgrade sunny. so glad whatever the fix :) nice to see ya able to comment at lisa’s place finally
g’nite ofg – nice to see your fonts again
wow mary
Slainte Mhath, indeed.
And here’s a health to our company, and the dearly departed.
*bowstothedragon*
Sad thing is, like the Millionaires For WealthCare Reform, it will probably sail right over the heads of the intended targets.. Still funny though!
Yay, you, commenting at La Figa
I’m hoping that seattle is enough of an indie film town to get the darwin flick shown here. It’s the kind of flick my band of merry science and society nerds would really enjoy.
FWDiva
totally cracked me up — glad to see rachel picked up on it
Goodnight, OFG.
society nerds. Interesting concept. I like it.
It that like some geeky dude with glasses and a blue suit that won’t talk to you unless you went to the same private high school he attended?
Did they have it at the film festival this year? I don’t remember hearing about it before.
There’s still some wierd stuff at La Figa. Only about half the comments had Reply buttons, for instance.
yeap – and show text doesn’t work there either.
tech crew has a list :(
Nah. “science and society” nerds. Science nerds and amateur cultural anthropologists.
But, yeah, society nerds is kind of a humorous concept.
I think we should flesh that out more…
FWDiva
But it’s pretty… ;
Ah Suz, meloncholy.
I miss the festing and the friends.
But it’s also good to be home.
Honey and I had the best fest ever I think . . . it was just in the air, all folks holding dear to one another in times of trouble, great stage music, great camp vibes, music, and food.
I saw four of the best living pedal steel players.
Cindy Cashdollor was with Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women. Lord, he didn’t leave ONE tune on the floor, did a two hour and more closing set first night!!! Awesome!
Buddy Black was with Lost Weekend, out of the Bay Area. He’s a legend.
Paul Franklin with Time Jumpers, aka Nashville and Station Inn, is a legend, and was my fav.
Greg Liezt with WPA was great, too.
All gods they are. And the rest of the music didn’t suck.
Rodney Crowell closed Friday, Del McCoury and the Boys closed Saturday. WPA Sunday.
I was up till 3-4am Thurs-Sun nights, and awake by 10am too.
Didn’t miss much, but ya NEVER get to see it all, at a Berry Fest.
So, we had fun. *G*
N thanks for askin! Take care of dem toofs!
I don’t think so, but I don’t really follow the SIFF.
My nearby cheap movie house is a Landmark Theater, and gets a lot of the indy/foreign flicks after their first run elswhere in town.
I saw Persepolis and Kite Runner there, f’rinstance.
FWDiva
“amateur cultural anthropologists”
That is definitely going on my resume’
Greenies in baseball used to be uppers, like them black beauty’s.
*G*
Been thinking of you two . . . . wishin ya both the best.
Doris Matsui has a telephone conference town hall Thursday night, is she yer rep?
If so, and you don’t have info, shoot me an email . . .
Tell Ron I send fond greetings . . . *G*
Seems strange that if the techie can get one section of FDL to work they could do the entire sight. Is the sight divided up and/or built at different times or something?
holy moly larue – alvin and rodney? dayam dood
i’m not a techie – my eyes tend to glaze over when they start talking about code and servers and firewalls and such.
Dang, I saw that, NO evidence it was spoof.
Like the Billionaires For Wealthcare?
i’m a science geek – always have been always will be.
Sunny, what did you upgrade to? I’m leery of 3.5.
No wonder we hit it off.
I love that Rachel Maddow has a “Moment of Geek” feature on her show.
I wish the world had many, many more science geeks, of whatever level of education.
FWDiva
3.5.3 is the current pc firefox version
music, science, critters, and food. why the hell would we not hit it off :)
Science geek… ah, but you repeat yourself. :)
Nite all!
Scroll Down For Fall Lineup
One of the best fests goin. Only 5,000, not crazy like others with 100,000.
GREAT amenities, in the Sierra’s, amongst the tall pines at 4,500 foot or so.
Can’t gush enuff about this place and fest.
One day, gal. You come, camp with us. Have fun. *G*
Same to any other pups, specially those of you who pick and sing.
This is special, every Memorial Weekend and Labor Day Weekend.
I’ll coach ya into it all. *G*
Both of my husbands were/are geeks. One was science and the other is computer type stuff.
I am off to bed. So you tomorrow. I will be thinking about all of yous.
The Crest?
g’nite word bloom
Goodnight, MaryM. and Word Bloom
Pre-CISE-ly.
Not to mention birds and natural beauty. And fresh air and peace and quiet.
Scritches to Token. Cool “hello” to her Highness the Bailey Cat.
FWDiva
g’nite mary mcc
Ay-yep.
Great stuff, for $3 a show. And I’m like, 2 miles away. And lots of street parking.
FWDiva
That’s the current Posix version, as well. It’s a security upgrade, so if you have 3.5.2 or earlier, it’s a good idea to update.
Well, my friends
I’m gettin’ sleepy, and I promised to drop off my car early-ish so the shop can check out my brakes. You know, one of the things I can’t afford NOT to fix…
Thanks for the good company! Take care.
FWDiva
Been there a few times. I like the price, but not the drive.
Goodnight, FWD.
g’nite funnyd
thanks cujo. i like the auto update feature – it updated and afterwards i hit the secuity fix site at wapoo (the only thing i read over there) to find out what it was about.
With Linux, I just get notifications of all the updates that are available, so auto-update has never been necessary. I suspect that it’s handy for Windows users, though.
Patrick, and Sam, Roadhouse.
it is cujo – there are so many to keep track of. i’ve been using Securnia to help me track – they let me know about any software that i’ve forgot to update.
So, was it warm on the coast today, Suzanne? Got into the low 80s here today, at least according to the time/temp displays.
*sigh* sam elliott
i love his voice
i hit the high 70’s. been warming up a wee bit each day since it rained.
He melts wimmens, even my honey, hard to hate success! LOL
He melted Katie Ross, the bastid, he did. MY gal.
But if not for that, I’d have missed my honey. *G*
Gotta go, Pups, thanks for the chattage, and Suz, forgot to mention, Bill Medley just has PIPES on your vid.
Nice pik, gal, nice pik.
And once more, here’s to Patrick being in a better place. He WAS special, and left us his images.
Namaste, all.
g’thud larue
One of the most ridiculous premises I can recall for a movie. Why in the world would anyone go to a bar that gets trashed every night?
Good stunt work, though.
goodnight, Larue.
was one of them movies to watch with the sound down and just watch the eye candy on the screen with complete disregard for the plot.
I’m watching last night’s Colbert Report.
on Obama’s speech: “You oppose Obama and he’ll get so bipartisan on your ass you won’t know what helped you.”
time for me mosey on down the road. thank you for all the conversations tonight.
g’nite all.
Goodnight, Suzanne.
I did. Was in major computer distress last night and desperate. Had been at 2.0 forever. Hate the google involvement, but that’s just me — I’m a privacy fanatic and try to steer clear of google where possible.
Appears the problem was my mouse. Replaced that today – so far so good. Don’t have an opinion about FF upgrade yet. Other than hating the way it looks – lordy I hate change.
One thing you might want to look at in 3.5 is the private browsing feature. It’s supposed to wall off all the history, cookies, etc., from whatever sites you are visiting. If there are sites you’re not too sure about, it might be a good thing to use. It’s in the Tools menu.
Well, goodnight SunnyNobility and anyone else who’s still around.
Thanks. Poked at that in passing. Discovered turning off history is a pita if you just want to return to the prior page — there may be other settings, or perhaps you’re referring to another feature. Haven’t spent much time exploring.
Until coming to fdl, I always blocked cookies. (But I never commented elsewhere) Don’t want to reject cookies here.. OTOH, I try to block them elsewhere. I don’t know is if there is any $$$ advantage to FDL if I retain cookies they serve when I’m out surfing. You know?

Patrick Swayze will be very much missed. My favorite work he did was Red Dawn. Although the Beast series on A & E was also quite entertaining. The other legacy he left down here in Texas were we grew up was that it was okay-even outstanding to be different- be a dancer , follow your artistic dreams ,( Boyhowdy it looks like we are being dragged back in the other direction these days – )
Patrick Swayze will be very much missed !
