House vote to "rebuke" Joe Wilson for insulting the President on the floor of Congress: 240-179.
Republican Yeas: 7. Democratic Nays: 12.
House vote to "condemn" MoveOn for insulting General Petraeus in a newspaper ad: 341-79.
Democratic Yeas: 146. Republican Nays: 0.
Yes, it’s apples and oranges for a variety of reasons, but does anyone think the Republican-controlled House wouldn’t have gotten over 340 votes to "rebuke" (if not censure) Pete Stark if he had called Bush a liar in the middle of a congressional address blaming 9/11 on cockroaches from Mars?
And can anyone imagine any Republican voting to "condemn" FreedomWorks for running an ad accusing an Obama appointee of being a terrorist Martian cockroach?
The problem with our government isn’t that there’s not enough bipartisanship, it’s that there’s too much unilateral bipartisanship.

I wonder how much hay the Rethugs can make out of this bright shiny object. Always reminds me of A Bright Shining Lie. Great title for this era, too bad its already been used for another.
at some point we’ll find a Dem leadership that realizes that one can’t make deals with da orcs on the other side of the aisle.. that they’re a unitary force of thuggery. The best of them are concern trolls like Snowe.
Bright shiny object. bso. oh, bs.
If we don’t have that kind of Dem leadership after what we’ve all witnessed during the past 8 1/2 (or make that 15) years, it will never happen.
All a staged distraction, which as usual is working flawlessly. Of course, it’s easy to make these things work when the BigMedia bosses are in on the game.
Appears that photo is an actual photo and not a still frame from video. Either way, what luck to have a photographer perfectly framed up right on Joe the PeanutGallery for that 1-second moment, and in focus and everything. Imagine that!
And I know for a fact they do not have cameras trained in on every quadrant of the audience. This was planned.
There was good reason for a Democrat to vote Nay on this one. Why do you think Kucinich voted with the GOP? Think he’s a turncoat? I think there were also good, principled reasons to vote Aye.
Best thing about this whole deal is that it is (hopefully) over.
So, the House passes a “rebuke” that doesn’t even amount to a slap on the wrist and Wilson’s fundraising gets another boost. Win-win.
Look at the picture above and tell me that those around Joe(asshole) Wilson’s “Liar” comment was NOT expected by those other Republicans around him!! No Fucking way this was not a premeditated comment by JoeLiar!!!
Seems to me there are two standards!! One for those who believe in civility and those who will use any thing to get a rise out of their base!! The Right is continuing downward spiral to who knows where what?? Maybe even outright civil war again??
The Thugs stopped being a normal American political party in 1995 (after the 1994 elections) and have never come back. They are Bolsheviks.
I’m not sure what it says that K West got more attention (big time from Laura Ingraham) than a punk Rep. Now that’s decorum rules, isn’t it?
Proof that TeaBagging for Health Care ain’t workin: teh Goopers have brought man-on-dog Santorum off the bench.
= no lube
On the bright side, we’ll all be dead in the long run.
I’m certain you know what it means. Black man is rude to white woman… mortal sin. White man is rude to black president… not so much.
That’s funny since he is already a loser.
Wherever you have assholes and frothing, there’s Santorum.
but but but he has such cute (and simultaneously really kinds scary) kids
I’m with you and Bonkers – that was a split-second shot – those adjacent heads should have instantly swerved. Would be interesting to see the next second..
It’s probable Repubs lost votes in the last election due to ugly talk and actions. That possibility seems to have eluded them.
Betraues-Gates, 2012. A winning ticket.
Run Rick, run!
Too centrist. It’ll never get past the NewsCorp nomination panel.
Or did you mean this on the Democratic side?
Jeezis kee-rist im so sick of white people. seriously, does anyone doubt thats what drives most of the votes of the “unilaterly bi-partisan” dems?to be able to claim to be “centrist” even tho being centrist in the US is to be a kind of chickeshit pro war, anti working class and rascist self serving coward?
I fear you might be correct.
Unilateral bipartisanship — the gesture is lost on the Republicans. Dems ought to drop efforts towards bipartisanship for anything but the smallest stuff. When Republicans bitch there’s a mountain of evidence of their acting in bad faith. Their methods have got to become the issue.
That pic of those three guys reminds me of the end of “Scent of a Woman.” The three brats sitting together in the student body.
If you do see the rest of the reactions you will see they are in no way surprised!! In fact look closely and you will see smirks on more that one face… Says to me it was premeditated by the Republicans!! Racists IMHO!!
Not saying your hypothesis is incorrect but I think you may be reading too much into one frame. It was a very short outburst, possibly in this shot they haven’t had time to react. Is there video available so we can see if there was a delayed reaction?
Where’s Santorum’s neck? He looks quite doughy! We alredy know he’s an idiot. I’m sorry but, this guy screams doofus, cornball, Republican clown! More of the same!
The principled reason I would go with is to at least put it on the formal record that such shenanigans have no place on the floor of the House.
Then again, I am a bit of a hopeless idealist when it comes to the forms.
But, if all of our representatives, who knew Bush was a liar, actually called him one… Well, things would be different.
Larry Agrees. You probably have a point.
I don’t think that lies need to be tolerated on the basis of some BS decorum, – that’s totally counter intuitive!
Bush lied, a million? died, everyone was civil & polite.- ?!?
Well, that’s the irony – that calling Obama a liar is probably more acceptable than calling Dubya one.
Try looking for more frames! And when you do find them you will see they are all in on it!!
So? Not exactly surprising if true. Should Dems issue an impotent rebuke of the entire GOP? Probably. Will they? No. Would it change anything if they did? No.
you know, ive called bush a loser, a dick, a retard, humunculous, douchebag, weiner, cap’n codpiece, chimpy, boy wonder,
and some other stuff i cant remember, but i NEVER called him that in the middle of a formal adress to both houses of congress, and im not a congress creature, so this comparison yours, is like comparing what you say to what Pres. Obama says. not vallid.
Considering the utter lack of decorum that sometimes occurs on the floor of the House with respect to other members (remember Jean Schmidt calling Jack Murtha a coward, or Bob Dornan grabbing the tie of Thomas Downey?), trying to at least show some respect towards the Office of the President is a welcome thing.
Lies do not have to be tolerated, but there are better venues for calling someone out on their lies than letting the House slide towards the houses of parliament that often make the news for the all-out scrums.
Check out this other picture of the incident!! http://twitpic.com/h5a4r
Looks to me they knew it was coming!! And oh by the way did any of them look at Joe when he was saying “Liar” ?? I don’t think so….
Perhaps you will be invited to help rewrite the rules of the House of Representatives, so your voice can be heard.
solerso,
that body of perpetual dissemblers and the President(s) representing Wall Street should get no sanctuary where they can be allowed to bamboozle (lie) and propagandize in public.
it’s simple; don’t lie and you’re safe.
I sincerely doubt it.
That is not the point ratfood… it just shows that the party of no is complicit in breaking rules they helped put in place over 100 years ago! They don’t care about our country/people just what they and the rich want… To continue to fleece the rest of us at our countries expense!!
If you could somehow rid the capitol of liars there would be no one left but the crickets… and I’m not even sure about them.
Excuse me, this is news?
Should I be heating tar or gathering feathers?
Telling people not to lie will not prevent other people from calling them liars anyway.
The Republicans have trotted Mrs. Wilson out in a TV ad, because Mrs. Alito was otherwise occupied.
Beg to differ: crickets and Russ Feingold…and Barney Frank, and Anthony Weiner, and a few more
Just sayin’
;~P
I’ not suggesting any such thing as emptying out the place, – just calling out liars whomever they are. PC decorum is BS.
Betraues-Gates, 2012. A winning ticket.
Evening, all-
Gotta say, If I was a Republican strategist, Petraeus/ Gates would be a dream ticket. I actually had a brief encounter with Petraeus at Ft. Benning some years back (friendly-as a civilian). Very impressive guy in person, and with his now much enhanced reputation and what is seen as a pragmatic, apolitical nature (that is actually deeply political), and a VP who worked for a Dem, they would be an extremely viable ticket, IMHO.
Nah just pitch forks and torches for when the time is ripe ratfood… of course unless you agree that rules in our Government mean nothing?>?
It’s not “PC decorum” – it’s trying to keep the place running as smoothly as possible. It’s kind hard to have debate within a body when there are no rules as to how members should comport themselves (especially since one side is already pushing to see just how far they can bend the rules that are already in place).

So it’s quite ethical to lie in that Chamber, but not at all proper to point out the lie?
Ok, that makes sense. (?!?)
You can point out the LIE. You just can’t call the other person a LIAR.
There is a difference.
If you look at history you will see that the Republicans have resorted to violence in the past and that is why Decorum is very important if we are to keep our Democracy!!
Check out Scott Horton post today!!: Joe Wilson, Neoconfederate
Things got very ugly back then and thus the rules on Decorum!! Otherwise we will lose our Democracy and OUR country to the fringe element in this country…
Um…I agree with you. That’s what I’m trying to explain.
Should our leaders be ethical in all things related to their office? Absolutely. In practice, they seem able to bend the rules whenever it suits them. There is precious little altruism to be found in the corridors of power and at BEST the Dems are only slightly less nefarious than the Republicans.
Corp tools rule.
What’s a “SCOLLeromo!”?
I guess, looking around at this crumbling City on the Hill, I have little respect for 99% of the Congress critters of both Parties. So, their false indignation is BS.
Evenin’ Eli and Firedogs -
fyi – Santorum has been on Tony Perkins’ FRC dole for some time now, not raising quite the amounts they had hoped with the whole murdered blastocysts and grannies fest – Tony had to turn him out
work it bitch !
In the Republican Party, being a liar, racist, gullible and stupid are pre-existing conditions.
That is when you nee to scroll way down to be rid of TROLLS!!
OH YEAH!! They were once a decent party but…
