Here’s a fascinating little case study in wingnut BS transmitting.
The Anchor Baby got the ball rolling.
Police estimate 1.2 million in attendance. ABC News reporting crowd at 2 million — tweets Tabitha Hale from D.C.
Teeny, tiny fringe, huh?
Wingnut bloggers from Glenn Reynolds to the Pajamas putzen to Newsbustards start jerking off excitedly link to the Anchor Baby.
Estimates for crowd sizes are starting to come in. We’re talking at least a million people, folks.
Wingnut "experts" confirm the Anchor Baby’s "reporting" with super-scientific analyses.
I did a back-of-envelope based on the photos and reports. A pretty dense crowd is about 1.8 people per square meter, and the National Mall alone is about 125 hectares, 1.25 million square meters. So that would be 2.3 million people.
Wingnut BS is then, rather predictably, exposed as total BS.
Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration’s health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.
Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.
At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as "tens of thousands."
Wingnuts, with egg on their faces, blame media.
I’ve been talking all night to people who are there and involved. The 2 million number was generated by the media, but truly seems to be a gross inflation of what is there.
Damn liberal media. Always exaggerating the size of right-wing protests, just to discredit wingnuts.
Thers has more.

Wingnuts exaggerate? That’s crazy talk! Seriously, that’s crazy talk.
They do it all the time. It probably starts with the male wingnut’s exaggerating the size of their tallywackers. And then telling the wingnut women it’s “8 inches, cut.”
the “liberal” media has no idea how to cover the wild-eyed extremists on the right. The Washington Post refers to them as “conservative activists”. there’s nothing conservative about comparing Obama to Hitler, misdescribing health insurance reform as a government takeover aimed at giving free insurance to illegal immigrants and offing grandma. It would be nice if the Post, CNN, and the rest described the absolutely over the top wackiness on display yesterday–signs declaring that Obamacare should be buried with Kennedy, other signs depicting Obama as a modern-day Hitler. These aren’t conservatives, they’re wackos, and the Republican electeds who addressed them should be asked why they are associating themselves with these extremists.
Fucking lies every one of them!! check out C&L and scroll down a bit… can’t seem to get the the thread(too busy) page but the pictures tell a thousand words… One Million my ass!!
How can it be the Million Moron March if only 60,000 to 70,000
peoplemorons were there…?Well see it’s like this BT. See, each person there physically was a stand-in for 50 others so even if there were 70k physically present, you have to account for the other souls there in spirit so that metaphorically there were MILLIONS and MILLIONS and MILLIONS out there representin’
oops linky
What are you talking about? It certainly looks like two million people to me.
Maybe OT
Here’s what the dummies are protest agin.
Just happened to get this note from a UK friend this morning.
“..and where necessary most adapts are portable — then the operation which went well –discharge in 5 days –followed by a post op care team district nurse physio assistant visiting the home plus if any problem she could ring the team, she has 3 monthly visits to a doc either consultant or registrar to check progress and now a 6 monthly is planned. my mum is 80 and my aunt knows a very fit guy who had the same op done at age 90. so i really think the press in the states is doing a good job in rubbishing a reasonable service–i suppose it is as you say murdock and the large insurance companies who rather like the freedom that they have an pay the congress for —in terms of election campagning and also the money spent lobbying.
what on earth happens to the voice of the people over there –it doesnt seem to be heard –has democracy been taken over by commercialism to such an extent.
What 70,000 looks like compared to two million.
Worth checking out.
As if it was a “pretty dense crowd.”
Oh, wait.
Sorry folks but there are more people than you could imagine that still want to save America from statism and big government. You think wingnuts are the enemy? No, it’s the liberal and middle of the road Dems. We know progressives are hell bent on destroying this country and eliminating personal freedom.
Uh that is Saint Peters… wrong get together… beside the Pope would be pissed if you used his “People” as an example…./s
Using the official crowd estimation of 70,000 and the teabagger wet-dream “estimate” of 2,000,000, you can figure out that the TCEM (Teabagger Crowd Exaggeration Multiplier) factor = 28.5714286. If you apply the TCEM factor to, say, Obama’s inauguration crowd (officially estimated at 1.8 million) one finds that the inauguration crowd was actually 51,428,572. WOW! What a big crowd! This must be Rove’s newest math.
absolutely right–the crowd that gathered yesterday represented a small, select delegation of informed citizens. Just check out their signs–Obama is Hitler. Genius. Bury Obamacare with Kennedy–right on, classy stuff. Keep your hands off my Medicare–exactly, don’t let the government get its dirty fingers on it–or Social Security, for that matter. Confederate flags, a nearly all-white crowd waving signs accusing Obama of being a terrorist and demanding to see his long form birth certificate. These are defenders of freedom, as Sen. DeMint declared. When Bush and Cheney did their best to obliterate constitutional democracy, that was nothing compared to the radical attempt to make sure people don’t go bankrupt because of medical bills. The fate of America lies in the hands of people like this: http://thinkprogress.org/2009/09/12/912-signs/
But you left out the Colored People Deflation Factor™.
LOL!
Love the bullshit button.
Don’t suppose there’s any chance in hell it would work as well as the EASY button, would it??
Goddam, can you just IMAGINE an America without the bullshit???? Man, real discussions, on real issues, and real problems get real solutions????
Nah, that’d be SOCIALIST man.
Love the Bullshit button.
Hate the bullshit.
weren’t these star teabaggers even there? and they couldn’t tell that the number of people there (60,000) might be just a little bit less than 2 mil? I mean, crowd sizes are always tricky when you’re on the ground, but I mean any asshole should be able to see that a crowd of about 60,000is less than 2 million. I know. Michele Malkin ,et al – not just any assholes
I’m from NJ and it’s the densest state.
Either it’s stupid snark or you’re really [Edited by Mod. No name calling].
It just adds another delicious layer of moron to the Million Moron March that they can’t count the number of morons marching. I mean, they are morons, after all.
I mean, look, I was at an Obama rally that got c. 75K. Ain’t nobody thought it was 2 mil. How hte fuck did these dopes ever think they’d get away with that crap? BTW, Fox showed the rally all day w/ Glen Beck as in-studio host. MSNBC showed Obama speech in MPLS.
Darnit, mod. But it’s a troll. I thought there was a “troll exception” to that rule.
These are the same morons who go to a political march and rally with signs that misspell politician. Wish I had the link to that pic…
I’m continually surprised that these right-wing people who hate government are labeled as conservatives and are thought to be the spiritual descendants of the founding fathers. One look at the Constitution and the Federalist Papers clearly shows that the Founders were skeptical of the inherent goodness of individuals (sorry, Ayn Rand and Grover Norquist) and believed that the populace at large, as represented by these types, was not to be trusted (therefore the Electoral College and, until 1913 or so, no direct election of Senators).
All the more reason to ignore the troll then. I have no idea what might have prompted the mod edit, but usually I think it’s because of personal attacks. If we attack all the trolls with personal invective, it allows them to be the martyrs (or at least, in their minds). Just do the standard and:

Some people are experts at subverting the truth ,in fact they can even make huge amounts of money doing it.
Wingnut blogs were bad enough ,but now we got elected officials repeating the nonsense spewing forth from right wing radio .
The 60,000 or so that showed up in DC were a good cross section of the extreme right wing the lunatic fringe so to say ,birthers, deathers secetionists and just plain old racists Obama haters .
If there was one unifing factor in yesterdays march(?) it was hatred for the man in charge
An infinite loony loop.
Checked the FOX News website (and took a quick shower). They’re saying “tens of thousands.” That’s what they say for less than 100,000.
That darn liberal media downsizing the crowd
From the master.
“125 hectares, 1.25 million square meters”
huh? rethugs using metric? like the French!? ohlala!
isn’t this some type of burnable offense? describing the sacred center of imperial power using such an obscene and heretical system of measure?
Look, what can you expect form a crowd that can’t count past 20 without taking some clothes off?
You can expect to be spit on, then attacked by goons of the Goldman Sachs Health Care System.
well said gpe–I just wrote something on the Seminal (one of the sub-blogs here) that should go up tomorrow and attacks the idea that the radical right wingers are “conservatives” (I noticed the Washington Post keeps describing them as such). These aren’t mainstream views, and, as you point out, they are not exactly heirs to the Jeffersonian, Madisonian, or even Hamiltonian tradition. These are foaming at the mouth radicals spouting baseless, over the top nonsense, and they ought to be described as such.
I take no comfort that only 70,000 rethug orcs massed on the Mall yesterday.
My threshhold of comfort for orcs is about 20 of ‘em. Studies have shown that property values start falling rapidly once 21 of ‘em are spotted together in any of America’s better neighborhoods. Gunracked pickup trucks start crowding the streets, threatening our children and taking up two parking spaces instead of one. Blockbusting sane-flight starts to happen and the neighborhood goes ghetto. It’s really not a pretty sight. /s
They might as well stop at twenty, then, and leave the clothes on. Not likely that they can get much further in counting.
Clearly Fox made a mistake. What they meant to say was “tens of billions.” We should flash the correction to Roger Ailes immediately. You know he’ll want to set the record straight.
An incredible video of a heroic man! The corporations are setting up their fascist regime.
Guy’s got balls.
Erick Erickson, of viking and Redstate fame, is sticking to his guns on 2 million. He seems to be linking a British socialist tabloid in defense of that figure.
What happened to the concept of fact checking? Earlier in the week it was attacks on the Pentagon from boats. No one bothered to check with anyone about that either.
The press has become a gaggle of chicken littles, not even bothering to look up to verify the hysteria that the sky is falling.
The Press? the Press? There is no freaking Press in this country any more!! Well except maybe Keith & Rachel the rest are all suspect in their stories and motives!!
Book Salon a couple of flights upstairs with Robert Frank’s The Economic Naturalist’s Field Guide hosted by Mark Thoma
How fake are the crowd pics the teabaggers are using to claim huuuuuuge crowds? Some of them are recycled from old Promise Keepers events:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..d-estimate
I saw that too Nahant! Side by side with the inaugration photo, there is simply no contest. We crushed that little get together with 2 million after crushing their lunatic party in the elections. Maureen Dowd has a great op ed in todya’s times about the fact that they still can’t seem to come to terms with the fact that the President is black. It’s a good quick read. You guys should check it out.
Conservatives have embraced the mantle of obdurate ignorance for decades, so why should this behavior surprise anyone? The wingnut sheeple bleat with delighted acceptance at the most ludicrous and impossible of “facts” that their shepherds at FauxNews force feed them. They do not register the cognitive dissonance of maintaining that President Obama is somehow both a communist AND a fascist. These folks believe in the pathetically amateurish faked Kenyan birth certificates that “prove” Obama isn’t an American citizen. These morons are dumb enough to believe that counseling about hospice and do not resuscitate orders constitute liberal “death panels.”
It was a given that if more than a few dozen misguided souls responded to Glenn Beck’s febrile calls to assemble in D.C., that they would loudly trumpet this as evidence of some vast sea change against President Obama. These folks don’t let any facts hinder their delusional paranoia.
At this gathering of “patriots,” I saw no shortage of Obama as Hitler signs, swastikas, and birther/deather crap galore. This “grass roots” gathering which was organized by corporate whore Dick Armey has absolutely nothing to do with what motivates most Americans. This is nothing more than fear mongering and race baiting. It IS racism which fuels these buffoons. They are afraid of a black man in the White House. They are afraid because if he indeed does well, it undercuts all of their bigoted tripe that blacks have been to blame for much of what ails our society. Remember, just last year the conservatives were trying to pedal the notion that the collapse of the housing market was due solely to impoverished blacks who somehow forced honest bankers into giving them risky mortgages that they couldn’t afford. If President Obama does well, it disproves their entire political raison d’etre.
The inconvenient truth is that without the racial animus, this group fizzles into nothingness instantaneously.
I’m not a conservative, but I wouldn’t characterize conservatives as a whole as being equivalent to the bunch that we see on Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Reilly. The classic movement has a real and honorable philosophy that has been subverted and bastardized by opportunists and scoundrels. True conservatives hold the individual person to be of worth no matter what their nationality and would be horrified by the torture countenanced by the previous Administration. They also would not embrace the dehumanization of their opponents and of people in need no matter their nationality or color. I recognize the value of true conservatives because I believe that our system works best when principled people of both liberal and conservative philosophies act together to forge a consensus that best serves the country. The Teabaggers are not the inheritors of the conservative mantle – they remind me of nothing more than petulant children who are unworthy of any leverage in the resolving the crises that we face today.
