I continue to be amazed at the reaction of conservatives to the idea of Obama giving a speech to schoolkids. Even local KC conservative radio talk show hosts are stunned at the jaw-dropping callers they are getting (do check out the comments at the link, btw). Polling by Survey USA in the Kansas City area suggests that 21% of those surveyed would keep their kids home from school today rather than have them listen to the speech. (Breaking this down by age, however, it is clear that at least some who think this are likely too old to actually have school age children.)

But there’s a blowback coming, and I don’t think the Right is at all ready for it . . .

SCENE: a warm fall afternoon in a clean and utterly Conservative kitchen. A picture of Ronald Reagan hangs on the wall, and MOM is wearing an apron as she finishes baking cookies. The door opens and TEENAGER enters, drops a backpack of books on the table, grabs a handful of cookies from the cooling rack, and turns back toward the door. . . .

TEENAGER (without a care in the world): "OK, I’m going next door to play some Wii."

MOM (ominously): "Wait a minute (gesturing with her wooden spoon). Is your homework done?"

TEENAGER (still unconcerned): "I don’t need to worry about homework any more, Mom."

MOM (threateningly, tapping her wooden spoon in her palm): "What do you mean by that, young man?"

TEENAGER (with confidence): "You and Dad told me not to listen to Obama, ’cause he’s evil and wrong and communist and all that, right?"

MOM (slightly confused and off-balance): "Absolutely — but what does that have to do with going to play with your friends before your homework is done?"

TEENAGER (triumphantly): "We watched Obama’s speech in school, and he said it was important to do our homework — so since you said not to listen to him, I figured that the whole homework thing is off, and you’d call my teachers and tell them that I’m "opting out" of all that stuff. (TEENAGER walks out the door while calling back to MOM) See you at dinnertime."

And if you think I’m making this up, you haven’t dealt with any teenagers lately.
