Happy Labor Day ES.
Well, just Labor Day.
Not much to be happy about, IMHO.
g’evening, ES, Firepups!
I have nothing on my mind tonight. My mind is coated with a teflon-like layer of grease from inhaling all the Everything-Onna-Stick! Deep-fried! at the Minnesota State Fair. Ya don’t have to actually eat any of that stuff, breathing the miasma hovering over the fair is enough. Uffda.
Thanks OFG, to you as well. Lots to be happy about here.
Gee that ’s enough to make one stay on a diet..)
Howdy all!
yuk!! and yummy.
KCD, How was the town hall last week?
Well, I’m Definitely Going To Hell. ;]
You didn’t eat a finger, did you?
It was civilized! No fingers were bitten off during the filming of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..annel_page
Hmm! I owe you a beverage; order up!
Me too..)
Here’s how Buffy defines Keshagesh
Keshagesh? It’s a Native American word, and as Buffy explains, “Keshagesh means Greedy Guts. It’s what you call a little puppy who eats his own and then wants everybody else’s.”
Wow, Buffy Ste.Marie – where has she been all these years? It appears she, at least, has not mellowed/gone soft.
my SIL had a Big Fat Bacon (1/3 lb bacon slice deep-fried onna stick with maple syrup for dipping). Grandson had a Pronto Pup (5-yr-olds tend to be staunch traditionalists). Youngest nephew had a deep-fried Mars bar onna stick. That was thoroughly disgusting, but being a 12-yr-old, he thought it was manna.
I had Key Lime Pie on a stick, dipped in dark chocolate. It was frozen. Not too bad. Although a few smart-asses in my group threatened to have it deep-fried for me.
Well that says a lot, now, doesn’t it?
Hey ES, lemme ask you something. You get and find all these wonderful people making progressive music. If you were to make some YOURSELF, what source or inspiration would you use?
From her myspace page:
After the beatniks and before the hippies
Count me among the smart asses! I woulda insisted!
FDL of course.. and my friends and my community, Eureka Springs. My cup truly runneth over.
I don’t even want to know what chemicals are needed in order to keep a Mars bar from melting in a deep fryer…)
OK, I get that. I feel that way too, but I mean a more pointed question; if you were to write a progressive or protest song, what specific writer or speech or musician or song might you draw inspiration from?
What’s on my mind tonight? I wish people would step back and take breath once in a while. Oh, and Frank Turner’s another good musician I’d never heard of.
freeze the hell outta the mars bar, coat it in a gargantuan layer of whatever the heck that spackle is that they put on the outside of Pronto-Pups, and voila! Deep-fried Mars bar. Or Snickers. Or Milky Way. They’re into lots of choice at the Fair.
I didn’t realize there was an interim period there.
Yes. They deep fry ice cream after all.
ndfg, that’s what it’s like here during fair time–we live quite close to the fairgrounds and I feel strangely full all week long, just from the mingled food smells. Went to the fair and got a cup of coffee.
Oh, yeah, I have her album = first one? Just titled “Buffy Ste Marie,” iirc (not getting up to paw through the boxed LP’s). Around ‘68, ‘69, I think. “Up on Cripple Creek” is what I remember from that one.
I just haven’t heard anything of her for years.
She has a MySpace page? Wow.
So, ndfg, didja have any of that new-fangled fried butter?
Or is that at the Texas State Fair? (which hasn’t started yet – heard an interview with the guy that will be making that – came in late so not positive which Fair he will be doing).
Same thing; batter up pats of butter and deep fry ‘em that way. Says it’s like biting into a little pillow with the burst of butter flavor.
Almost – almost – sounds good to me. ;}
If I were to do so right now:
David Bromberg, A friend who shall remain nameless, and David Farrelley (who wrote several books, including a select few copies of a personal song book of which he gave me a copy).
You?
yes, it made me feel old. Because i didn’t want to eat any of it. Well, except for some garlic fries. Those were delish. And I had the Swedish Egg Coffee at Salem Lutheran Church’s dining hall. That alone is worth a trip to the fair.
Good point.
Oh yes, click on her blue name at the top of the post. I almost always link to any artist myspace when I post their work.
Mostly I’m pondering how it is possible that a Democratic Senator could say they’re for single-payer health care and then turn on a dime and oppose the public option. I’m wondering how a BlueDog Senator could beg for federal gov’t assistance during national disasters and oppose the public option because their electorate doesn’t like it. I’m wondering how a Senator who claims to be moderate could take tons of gov’t money for military projects and yet has no interest in shifting resources (not even handing out new money) to help improve public health.
What kind of person could say they’re a Democrat, support candidate Obama’s healthcare reform proposal for a public option and the Democratic platform which proposes a public option and then turn on their fellow Dems when it comes to a vote?
There are, of course, some Republicans who would like to vote for good reform, but are limited by their party leadership (Rush, leave ‘em alone!). That I can understand. I hate it, but I understand it. But, Democratic senators are more independently responsible for their own elections. Absolutely none of them takes money from the DSCC, right? I mean, a Dem trying to get elected down South doesn’t have to worry about funding, do they. And, a Dem on the Left Coast doesn’t have to worry at all. They abhor getting support. Not one would want to be beholden to anybody. Nobody does. But, is it a party independent individuals who have nothing in common with one another or a party of people who have some common ideas & goals?
It sickens me and worries me tremendously to think we don’t really have a party (in Congress) who can really stand together to get big important things done because of parochial interests. That is no way to govern and it leaves open the door for an organized opponent Republican party to simply walk in and take over. Do these Dem senators even care whether Dems are in charge? Do they not mind Republicans getting back into power? How can that be?
I’m upset and worried. Worse perhaps, I don’t see the president challenging them because all that would happen behind closed doors. We aren’t getting any signals things are going well. We hear far too much talk of dissent. Who needs Republicans to stop us when we can’t even get it together amongst ourselves?
It’s time to cut bait or go home. Are we a party which sees this reform as a good thing which will also happen to get people re-elected or not?
Wait, so you meant literally “inhaling?” You didn’t actually eat any of that great sounding stuff?
You wimped out? Don’cha know whatever you eat at the fair is free food – no health consequences whatsoever?
That is too wild; my hub and I were just talking about bamboo to put along our fence today!
And Bromberg – very helpful. Thanks.
And I love Cripple Creek, but The Band / Levon Helm will always be my favorite rendition.
Ahh, Buffy Sainte-Marie.
You know she was once married to jack Nitzsche. I once had a deal with Nitzsche that he would teach me how to play the piano if I would teach him woodworking.
Of course, that was back in the 70’s, and we never followed though, and well before that terrible incident with Neil’s ex, Carrie Snodgress. But, I digress.
Still, Buffy, what a talent.
Mike Seeger and the New Lost City Ramblers did a bitchin’ Cripple Creek, if I remember.
As I wrote and Scarecrow wrote the other day, what pressure Obama is applying to lawmakers seems to be to move them in the direction opposite of the one we want them to go.
Rats, computer acting weird – maybe a clue I need to quit propping up my eyelids and go to bed.
Apparently getting up early to go to work recently has finally altered my sleep schedule.
Will probably dream of Indiana State Fairs of my youth, and all kinds of giant foods on a stick chasing me. ; )
Nite, all.
Just grow a bamboo fence… it’s the best way, imo. Makes a great privacy fence and much much taller than most city codes (or personal budgets) would allow. Takes about three years.
Oh wait, you are in CO. lol
You do digress – who is Jack Nitzche? (yeah, I could google, but I’m tryuing to go to sleep….)
tejanarusa, i just went over to the Minnesota State Fair webside’s Food Finder and didn’t see fried butter. But i kid you not, i did see Tater tot hot dish on-a-stick with cream of mushroom dipping sauce and Uff Da treat (a filled krumkake topped with caramel sauce and butter roasted pecans) at Ole & Lena’s. Lake Woebegon lives.
Deep fried avocado at the Fallbrook Avocado festival. Imagine!
They have about 30 youtubes, but no cripple creek.
“Tater tot hot dish [???] on a stick w/ cream of mushroom dipping sauce…”
Oh my sweet….
Think I’ll take the fried butter.
Oh, yeah – what is a Swedish egg coffee? Just coffee with an egg cooked in it, like egg drop soup? Or something more elaborate, or even, like the NYC “egg cream”, something with neither egg nor cream?
Of course it always has been. He wouldn’t allow SP advocates in early meetings… which certainly triangulated out a PO compromise. He’s never moved an inch in our direction since.
When he flounders around on Wed… if we don’t rise to a pre Bastille level.. he’s going to fail.
I’ve eaten enough Mexican food that this doesn’t sound weird to me. Of course, that’s usually where I have fried ice cream.
Jack was one of the great originals. Played a lot with the Stones in the late 60’s. Was the piano player on Neil Young’s Harvest. Before that he worked with Phil Spector and produced, with the late David Briggs, Buffalo Springfield and Neil’s first solo albums. Co-wrote, with Buffy, “Up Where we Belong” which became a big hit for Joe Cocker.
He was, also, equally as nuts as Spector.
Don’t laugh! There are bamboos that grow at high altitude, no kidding! Think Nepal….
Maybe I’m misremembering it, but the Cripple Creek I’m thinking of is an old banjo tune, quite different from the Band’s version.
Maybe it was Pete Seeger and the Weavers.
G’nite, again – this time for real.
Yes, I’m afraid you’re right. The problem for me, personally, is working up the indignation. I saw the writing on the wall in early June. I suspect there are folks who have been onto this game even longer.
Still, I’m sure I can manage to be annoying to my elected representatives one more time. Maybe we should all march somewhere. I was never into chanting and so forth, but we seem to be beyond the point where ordinary means of persuasion have any effect.
Was he as well armed?
I remember my Grandma making Egg Coffee, my Baby Brother still makes it.
Here’s a recipe from Recipezaar:
Swedish Egg Coffee.
1 egg
1 cup cold water, divided
1 cup regular grind coffee
6 cups boiling water
Use a graniteware (enamel) coffee pot.
Wash egg; break it into a small bowl, reserving shell, and beat slightly. Add 1/2 cup cold water, the 1 cup ground coffee and the reserved egg shell, crushed. Mix thoroughly. Turn into coffee pot; pour on boiling water, and stir. (I remember the ladies adding the coffee/egg mixture directly to the boiling water.) Optional: The spout of the pot can be stuffed with soft paper towel to prevent escape of the fragrant aroma. Place on front of range and boil 3 minutes. If not boiled, coffee is cloudy. If boiled too long, too much tannic acid is developed. Add remaining 1/2 cup cold water; which perfects clearing. Cold water, which is heavier than hot, sinks to the bottom and carries the grounds with it. After coffee has settled, serve at once.
Goodnight for real, then.
Well, if you were aware of the reference to Carrie, then the answer is yes.
“Bastille Level” – that’s why I was askin you about yer preferences on a protest song.
I’m trying to cook one up before LLN on Wednesday, ’cause I think our intertoobz will be hopping, and I’d like to be in front of the outrage; musically, so to say!
It’s weird for me; I’m blogging from my front room, with the piano and synthesizer just like in this video, and noodling around too in between commenting.
It was so fun last month to re-connect with my friend from 30 years ago, even though I sing like shit. Sharing that poorly sung song, but damn near instantly over FaceBook was just the UT! It cemented our re-connection.
But the main thing is to be an activist, artist, make videos and music to make a point. And it’s so easily done anymore, I’m really quite astounde by that fact.
I think I’m like everybody else; struggling to make a coherent voice FOR what we want, and defining what we don’t want. And it’s maddening with the Rahm’s of the world in the way.
Just maddening.
I thought only Jesus could divide water…
Last time I saw Farrelly.. we were way down in Michoacan Mexico… drinking, playing songs, exploring. He took us to some tiny village in the middle of nowhere. We were sure he was lost too. ANyway.. we drove up to this patch of bamboo in somebody’s yard. The bambo was over 110 feet tall. The kind elephant keepers would use to cage em in India and whatnot.
We spent the rest of the day cutting 18 foot sections of this giant stuff and tied as much as we could on top of my Suburban. Spent the next month or so touring all over mexico with it on top… tires bulging from the weight.
And I’ll be damned if customs wouldn’t let us bring it across the border. The were afraid it might still be “viable” for transplanting. So we dumped it all in the Rio Grande.
i am so glad you are making the attempt tho.
Oh, yum, dark chocolate Key Lime Pie on a stick! I feel my self control fleeing. It’s a good thing I’m not near any fairs.
My hubby has been obsessing over the topo maps of the fires nearby and he found this very cool thing – the webcam at Mt. Wilson, 150′ in the air.
We do have to get out of our comfort box. Marching is actually quite invigorating.. you do need to keep your wits about yourself. And know it’s quite possible you will be arrested for doing your civic duty.
The thing is we know the wingnuts do put a fear in both parties… Look what Beck and idiots accomplished! We simply must find a way to accomplish the same from our end.
well, Southern Baptists may think they’re the only ones going to heaven, but my bet is on the Swedish Lutherans. They regularly perform miracles like that *g*
Hey there. Great job on the book salon today!
Does this absorb the acidity of the coffee? I want to try it.
The largest area of fire is Mt. Waterman, where we used to go cross country skiing. Hwy 39, which joins the 2 up there, has been closed in that area for more than 20 years due to earthquake damage. You could ski from there all the way to our house at the far end of 39 if you were some kind of triathlete.
Amen to that!
Thanks – that’s sweet of you NDFG.
Wonderful! Do it up.. We will LLN it for sure.
Add me to your face book friends sometime, por favor.
http://www.facebook.com/profil…..8;ref=name
Well, don’t rule out the Norwegian Lutherans. We’re some good Scandinavians too!
During the Vietnam protests in DC I went to a march on the mall with friends. They all got arrested while I was waiting in line for the port-a-potty. I came back to where they were waiting and poof. It took me hours to find out where they were. We had gone with 2 movie cameras we had checked out of the school newspaper office to get some film for a psychology class. Ended up me and another friend I ran into filming them in the holding pen and then the bailing-out process.
We each got an A on our report.
Thanks, LooHoo! Were you there? I had a blast doing it.
Concur! Arts and Activism is my new mantra.
The Arts have a way of speaking in a “non-detailed” (non-emotional, yet emotional) way that sort of transcends the usual politics.
Just like you can freak out the wingers with Mappelthorpe, you can inspire millions with music.
LOL, love it! I knew it was going to end in an A or an F.. highly unlikely a teach would fall in the middle with a story like that.
Great photo, btw.. in a tragic way.
Wouldn’t dream of leaving them out! My paternal grandma was Swedish so of course in our family it was SWEDISH Egg Coffee. But she wasn’t Lutheran. None of my scandahoovian relatives are.
I saw Mappelthorpe in Berkeley .. seemed like everyone did. Was studying photography at the time and had my own darkroom… His printing was among the best i ever saw.
Isn’t that always the way? Individuals can see far into the future, but society only sees nasty, bumpy, change – oh so difficult, can’t accomodate you.
bleh!
I got to the book salon late, so I wasn’t with you in real time until the very end. You do SoCal Pups proud!!
Here’s a couple of cool images, one from Mt. Wilson. Their Internet connection is back up.
Kelly, how much does a synthesizer go for? I remember when they first came out, it was the coolest sound.
Probably a foolish idea, but an idea nonetheless:
Anybody with a stake in Single Payer, much less the Public Option, please send to me your voice singing or talking this Dylan song; but sing it along with Odetta like in this clip:
I’ll combine all the voices into a huge chorus. And let’s let it rip!
Currently reading Carl Hiaasen. Nothing the effers do will surprise me.
And I’m laughing my ass off.
Great song. funkroll is a great youtube channel too.
How do we send it to you?
I paid just under $2,000 for my Korg Triton back in 2000. It’s a fabulous device, but I’m sure there are better machines out there now.
I sequenced “Great Gig In The Sky” with this bad boy last year, and I just love it’s potential.
Yeah, that’s what the sky has looked like, more or less, for the last week.
One used to be able to rent the observatory and a sky watcher for a night. IIRC, it cost about $600, which isn’t much if you get a group together. The astronomer shows you how to use the ’scope and will set up any area of sky for viewing.
That’s a great video.
Duh on me!
Mail it to kelly1_canfield at yahoo DOT com
I’ll put up a post at the seminal asking for human vocal recording action, aside from the necessary money pleas that Jane needs to do.
Bless her – I pretty much think of Jane Hamsher as part of the Arthurian legends; the Lady of the Lake. I sincerely believe that she is one of the most important voices/actors in our best interests today. I really do.
That sounds cool. I should get a group together to look at the Moon, or Saturn. As you may have noticed, they’re kinda short on funds thanks to the fire.
UPDATE: Oh, wait. There’s no remote viewing equipment. Duh. Still, for folks who live in and around LA …
Carl Hiaasen is a fave of mine. Also Tim Dorsey.
That’s gonna be one righteous tune.
That hits the spot…like it.
Thank dog they saved it! All those communications towers are replaceable but the observatory has so much history. We used to go hiking up there on full moon nights.
Are you in these parts too?
No, actually I live in the Pacific NW. For some reason, I was thinking there would be some sort of remote viewing facility. That doesn’t make much sense for a public viewing facility, though.
If I ever get to the area again, though..
This summer I got to see the Moon through the 24 inch telescope at Lowell Observatory. What a view!
Goodness he has a lot of books.
Well, time for me to turn in.
G’ night fabulous firedogs.
As great a job as she’s doing, it really shouldn’t be that way. I keep being amazed at how our institutions, even the ones we have supported in order to know what’s going on in DC, have been failing to do the jobs they’re meant to do.
Goodnight, ES. Actually, speaking of books, I think I’m going to get back to that Zimmer book I keep not picking up and reading. Goodnight, all.
G’nite ES, nite Cujo. Sleep tight. I’m heading out, too.
An amuse-bouche* of the very unfunny “Chicago way,” from veteran journalist Don Rose:
Now, Mr. Rose is not convinced that the friend was actually in a position to make a real offer, but as he implies, it’s the principle of the thing, especially in a place where the most appalling tales have often turned out to be true.
* Main course, which requires an extraordinarily long simmer, pending.
I’ve not read Tim Dorsey, thanks – I’ll give him a whirl after I finish the Hiassen marathon.
