Listening to local conservative talk radio yesterday was an enlightening experience — not just for me, but also for the two conservative hosts. It’s a pity their station doesn’t reach Washington DC, because the White House and the Baucus Caucus might have learned something about their health care negotiating partners.
Yesterday afternoon, I was making a few hospital calls, and while driving I turned on the local conservative talk station. After Rush’s show ends, the station has a pair of local conservatives who are actually possible to listen to because they at least try to deal with facts and not just bloviate for four hours.
Yesterday, they opened their show by talking about Obama’s "Welcome back to school" speech to schoolkids next Tuesday. They started by noting that some conservatives are complaining that this is Obama trying to indoctrinate the youth, inject politics into non-partisan schools, and all kinds of other bizarre stuff. These two radio hosts — no fans of Obama by any standard — were verbally scratching their heads in amazement at the wingnuts and their cable and online rants. They mocked RedState for their Obama=Hitler comparisons, and laughed at the "keep your kids out of school that day" idea that some wingnuts are pushing. After reading some of these items on the air, they asked their audience, "Do you really think that Obama’s going to do anything more than ’stay in school, study hard, and you can grow up to be anything you want?’"
Then they opened the phone lines. . .
Their rightwing listeners erupted, frothing at the mouth in their blind attacks on Obama with things like "It’s a slippery slope . . . he’s just like Hitler — creating his own Obama Youth . . . he’s trying to make this into a religious service, getting them to bow down to him as The Messiah . . ." One after another after another they spoke, leaving the two hosts occasionally speechless at what was being said.
I listened on and off for the first two hours as I drove between church, the hospitals and then home, and somewhere in the first half of the second hour, the radio hosts told a caller "Congratulations — finally we’ve found someone who agrees with us!"
These two guys aren’t rookies, and they generally know their audience pretty well. Even so, they were amazed at the virulent tone of the callers, and the fact that so many of them are unwilling to even consider the possibility that anything Obama ever does might be anything less than an underhanded, evil, socialist plot, all designed and being carried out by a grandmaster of 11 dimensional chess.
After listening to these callers, I wanted to call in myself and say "Guys, I’m a progressive liberal democrat, and I listen to you because you are at least thoughtful in your conservative views. But do you hear your callers? If you are Barack Obama and wanted to negotiate on health care, how do you negotiate with people like these?"
Alas, the lines were full.
Christy nailed it this morning. FDR knew what he was up against, and he called it out for what it was: fraud and deception by his political opponents, as they tried to ignore their own misdeeds and take credit for his accomplishments. Sometimes, the opponents are so entrenched in their own world, that you can’t even talk with them. All you can do is name them for what they are.
After listening to a crowd of off-the-deep-enders yesterday for two hours, I can tell you that hardcore rightwingnuttitude on parade is one ugly, ugly thing to behold.
Even on radio with no pictures.

The wingnut I was talking with last night went off on Obama’s talk to school kids.
I said how can you object to someone talking about the good of public service – look at the good work firefighters did
putting outcontaining the Lockheed fire just a couple of weeks ago. He’s going to tell kids that that kind of work is noble. His take: he’s indoctrinating them in Environmentalism, which is watermelon communism (green on outside/red on inside). Kids will grow up loving the state.
(And zed!)
Only Republics are allowed to indoctrinate: gather around, children, and hear the tale of Good St. Reagan…
How did the hosts handle the nutty callers?
I am not negotiating with right-wing nuts.
I’m not negotiating at all.
Corporations are determining your future.
Their world view seems to be: Work hard, buy toys, play hard, look down on those that aren’t as successful materially.
I ask them why they want a mutual friend that has survived her cancer for the past 5 years thanks to Medicaid dead – why they want their toys rather than to help her and others like her. So they would only have a new motorcycle every 3 years rather than every 2 years, isn’t having Karen alive worth that? At that point the smell of the turd in their punchbowl is so nauseating it is hard for them to just hold their noses.
I understand Obama’s need to try and reach-out; now that he has gotten his hand bitten several times, I hope his learning curve is accelerating in dealing with these folk.
….and, after opening up the lines for call-ins they were hit like the original Salt Lake City Mormans were hit with locust…or should I say, “Swarming wingnuts!”
WMNF Tampa has a number of call-in shows. The Libertarians and reichwingnuts have become more like blog trolls. They call in, do their rant then shout over any response from the host. When they do quiet down to the point where the host can question their stance they get huffy and hang up, calling the host and listeners “socialists,”, “commies,” “lefties.” The station and most listeners would prolly have to say “guilty as charged” to the “lefties” label.
here’s reagan’s 1988 speech to school kids pushing tax cuts and “god’s values”.
http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/a…..11488c.htm
i’m wondering if liberals should notify schools that their kids should be kept far away from wingnuts’ kids. and if it’s a public school, what’s a wingnut’s kid doing there anyway? it’s socialist.
Jesus loves them anyway. They would be the first to stone him.
I suspect that most of these people don’t have kids in school, or send their kids to schools which are all about brain-bleaching. And who the hell e these people who have time to interrupt their work days calling in to spew such virulence. They have to queue up for twenty minutes waiting…then they erupt? I suspect they aren’t gainfully employed but on SSI, disability, Veterans benefits, or unemployment….all those gov’t programs they hate.
They are on the dole…in some fashion or form and are simply hypocritical grifters that rationalize their sucking at the public teat to “bring down the socialist state”. They don’t pay their taxes, yet exploit the citizens who do as much as any of those “welfare moms” and “illegal immigrants” that they howl about.
Some of these folks are my kinfolk…I know the type.
Thank you!
“FDR knew what he was up against, and he called it out for what it was: fraud and deception by his political opponents, as they tried to ignore their own misdeeds and take credit for his accomplishments.”
BO needs to Man Up and follow FDR’s lead. The republics are not negotiating in good faith and they need to be called out by the president for their egregious behavior.
Hear that, Boner? Excuse me. Boehner. And your #1 boy Cantor, too.
Framing the issues: UC Berkeley professor George Lakoff tells how conservatives use language to dominate politics
Did you see this? Dems tell Obama they won’t help him out without a public plan NOW.

Jesus loves me
This I know
For The Family
Tells me so.
At first, they tried to kind of nudge them into the world of sanity: “C’mon. Isn’t it possible that he’s going to do a nice, polite little ’stay in school’ talk?”
Then they moved into argument and logic. After one caller ranted about the separation of schools and politics, like the separation of church and state, one of the hosts reminded her that when the planes hit the World Trade Center on 9-11, President Bush was sitting in a school classroom reading a book.
But the highlight for me was after one particularly off-the-wall caller finished his disconnected rant, and there was this moment of silence. I don’t recall the exact words of the hosts, but they had an exchange that went something like
Host 1: “I don’t know how to respond to that.”
(long pause)
Host 2: “I got nothing.”
(longer pause)
Host 1: “OK — maybe this is a good time for a break . . .”
When even conservative talk show hosts are stunned into silence at the idiocy before them, that says a lot.
I don’t understand how these people have time for all this hate. Don’t they have lives? Don’t they ever laugh, or go to lunch with friends, take a trip? I truly don’t understand how you can hate someone you don’t even know.
Pretty sure ‘wingnuts’ will say Obama will be at school to sell crack.
they hate themselves and are projecting.
i wrote this morning about his PARTNER,his heart,and mentor,Eleanor
Michelle should be the reincarnation of that blessed woman!!oh i wish
I may be perturbed with the President but he did appoint Van Jones. I accidentally ran into a wingnut enclave where truth takes a vacation. We have seen wingnuts such as Pat Buchanan and C-Street fundies, using Hitler as an icon to imitate.
But because the President wants to encourage students to study and learn he gets compared to the man who started World War II. Obviously the uninformed neo-con thugs dont need no lernin and dont need no fakts neether.
And this lesson is apparently “Obama’s Nazi Youth”. That is the President’s oratory will be so powerful, that all the youngin’s will immediately turn socialist. Or Nazi or something. Children are so deprived if they do not regularly watch Glen Beck. They may be reading books!
This as never been done before to our children, except as Kos points out, it has.
Amazing stuff.
That would be nice, alright…
My impression of the people calling in is that they are poor, uneducated and angry. They are being manipulated by the wealthy and the corps and it is working.
“They are being manipulated by the wealthy and the corps and it is working.”
That’s the game…Which is exactly why The President Himself needs to use the weight of the office to start kicking asses and taking names. That’s what FDR would have done.
I had FoxNews on this morn. They were all talking snidely about Obama’s school speech “Yeah, like 2nd graders are going to want to sit for this”. That’s what they do best. They really didn’t tell any lies about his presentation but someone listening would have a very negative view of the speech.
I have an acquaintance who watches Fox. She hates Pelosi. I asked her why and the response was “I just do”. After years of hearing Pelosi’s name sneered, it’s sunk in that she should be hated.
Yep, that’s the truth. And even when you consider that what solai said @25 is mostly true, they are just being manipulated, it doesn’t matter. You could talk logic and facts and reason with them until you’re blue in the face and it will do NO good. None.
It’s a shame, but it is what it is.
You can’t use reason or logic to talk a person out of a position that didn’t use reason or logic to get into it in the first place. Waste of time, and effort. Sad, but that’s what it is.
Is Toby here? Chris Matthews tore into our rep last night.
Lemme guess: She’s not too fond of brown people?
So how many of them are there? I’d really like to know.
The South Will Rise Again…we haven’t forgotten that have we? Methinks some have hopes of revivin’ slavery and they want to be 21st century slaveowners and traders. PS.. I’m not being sarcastic now I really believe it.
Actually, she used to be quite liberal. I don’t know what the hell happened other than she started watching O’Reilly. She astounds me now. And while she says that she knows O’reilly lies she’s still affected by him. I mentioned something I read on DKos and she went crazy (that I frequent that site) so I showed her the site and how anyone could write anything. She wasn’t convinced but the real point is that she hated something without ever having seen it.
BTW, I think she voted for Obama but that was more Bush hate than progressive thinking.
or Eleanor would have sent him 100 notes every nite
i believe she was allowed 20 PER NITE…iirc
Hinchey? What did Matthews rip into him for?
Nope, that’s not what the south is about at all.
The mission is complete. After 30+ years of media control the right wing has finally created the indoctrinated idiot public they demand to control the public memes and the minds of the “citizenry.”
Rep. Barbara Lee, Chair of the Black Caucus, is warning Obama not to drop the public option.
From Politico: Black Caucus warns Obama on speech
Not only does Obama have a bipartisan fetish he’s masochistic.
The whole racist thing reminds me of a story I once heard about a poor white Southerner who’s black neighbor (nearly as poor) finally got enough money to buy a donkey to pull a plow. The white guy shot the donkey and explained to his son that he couldn’t have a black guy pull ahead of him. IMHO, that’s the mindset of the people who are vulnerable to feeling threatened by Obama’s presidency.
Heck, even MoveOn has a petition urging the president to fight for the public option:
I signed. What the heck. It’s not how late they are to the fight but that they’re in it now, right?

Want some light reading? Check out the comments about this moron Broun here in Georgia. These fucking goobers love him.
how did that “thing” ever become a physician?
I think this is what is needed most now. AFL-CIO, congressional caucuses, organizations representing the base, and others telling the president in no uncertain terms that the magnitude of the political price he will pay for not honoring his commitments will be unaffordably high:
“You can negotiate with rethug talk radio or you can keep your mandate and your presidency. There is a line in the sand. Choose.”
light reading….Levi Johnson on Sarah the Sweetie in Vanity Fair
Mike Arcuri. Not for his blue dog stance (which I had hoped for). CM showed a clip of Bill Clinton pushing dems to pass a bill. CM then asked Arcuri what he thought Clinton was saying and Arcuri gave some blah answer and CM lit into him saying “Wrong. He’s warning you that you better get moving or the voters will view dems as unable to govern”

Holy shit. Talk about a fever swamp.

i betcha he is psychotic
Thanks. I don’t know anything about Arcuri.
Yea, fuckers are rabid. I know folks that have gone to the town hall’s but I am not up for it.
Joe and Mika were screaming about it at daybreak.
‘There thy goest again‘
;>)
well.. at least it keeps ‘em away from the real issues.
They sound like they may be the southern cousins of the callers to this talk show yesterday.
Wow.
I did the petition earlier today. Can’t hurt.
cant stand either of them….vomit inducing….MeekMikka…daddy musta dropped her on her haid as a toddler
fluff pure rancid marshmallow fluff
well.. nothing like rancid marshmallow fluff to distract people from appreciating their unemployment, their pending foreclosure, and their untreated medical conditions. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a cable handout to make sure people stay in their happy cloud of unreality while things fall apart around ‘em.
This is a quote from that link from Raven @42. It’s not the first time I’ve heard this.
When did President Obama say that?? Was it one of this summers town hall meetings?
This is why the combination of religion and this form of “politics” is so lethal: it’s all about “belief,” and there’s no combating with facts or reason.
A couple of weekends ago I went to the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial exhibition when it was in Sacramento (it was terrific) and one thing that shocked me was how similar the language on the posters and articles announcing the secession by the slave states was to the bullshit we are hearing now.
These idiots will say anything.
Had occasion to watch the Trumbo salute on PBS last night and this afternoon on the effects of the Hollywood black list on this particular screen writer and the insanity of those monstrous times. I was especially touched by his letter to the principle of the school where his daughter was being tormented by the BlueBird parents and PTA parents because of his position on his values and treatments. All of the episodes presented in the dramatized documentary so marvelously portrayed by some of America’s current liberals was such an incredible message for our times. If you haven’t seen it, it may be playing at other times this week in your area. Watch it and be inspired, empowered and emboldened for these present time insanities.
Thanks Peterr for your great post as always,
Blessings
He said something similar to that about his own grandmother who had a hip replaced a couple months before she died. He has a point, sometimes surgeries or procedures are performed near the end of life (whether at the insistence of misguided family members or the urging of unethical doctors) that really serve no useful purpose. There is a difference between prolonging life and prolonging death.
My dad suffered a massive stroke that left him unable to speak. He had a living will and those of us who knew him best were confident he would not want extraordinary measures taken to prolong his life. One family member threatened to sue the rest of us to have him put on life support, stating that Dad might have changed his mind after having the stroke and was simply unable to tell us.
I urge everyone to have a living will, but also make your wishes known to everyone in your family. Also, bear in mind that there are no prior directives which cannot be challenged.
he.. just listened in on Faux. Their bubblehead is saying that had Obama committed to bipartisanship and compromise, and had not spent political capital on the stim (and did healthcare first), healthcare reform would already be the law of the land. Gee. Thanks Rupert.
Oh.. and here we go:
http://www.foxnews.com/politic…..-students/
faux says that Obama’s tryin’ to indoctrinate your kids into socialism-fascism-whatever.
You hit it right on the head.
Yeah, but the real problem today (that’s different from years ago) is the National media now no longer bothers with sorting out facts. I think one of the SCOTUS decisions that will haunt us for a long time (if we’re even a country for a long time) is the one that basically said news programs don’t have to tell the truth.
Before, if you heard nasty bullshit that seemed to bizarre to be real, sure enough you could read a newspaper, watch CBS or NBC, and figure out, yep, it was bullshit just like I thought. Now, when “news” channels like Fox News broadcasts hours of Glenn Beck like complete, out and out insanity, those easily manipulated no longer have any “authority” to turn to say “See, that’s bullshit, and that’s true.”
It’s all one big load of shit foisted upon them daily and they have no hope of any authority figure (which is supposed to be the job of the press in a democracy) to work it out for them. So they look to their priests, their friends, their neighbors, to try and figure out the bullshit from the apple butter.
Doesn’t always work so well though.
But if I’m not mistaken, the way that’s quoted is taken out of context, isn’t it??
I mean didn’t he say something to the effect (and I have no hope of remember the actual quote), but something like:
My grandmother was very old and needed a hip replacement. Now, maybe some that worry about cost would question if it wouldn’t be better for everyone for her to just take a pain pill. But instead, she got the hip replaced and had many more years left.
Wasn’t it along those line? Instead of Obama saying “SHE SHOULD’VE JUST TAKEN A PAIN PILL”?
Help me out here, they say memory is the first thing to go. Can’t remember the rest.
What does it matter, these fuckers don’t care.
Yeah, true. Just worrying again over my memory.
And BTW, that link had more enlightened posts than I would’ve thought. Seemed there’s some reason down there in GA. Not sure how much though when they elect a guy like that Broun. *shudder*
He is the rep for a district that includes Athens, they gerrymandered it to negate the impact of a university community.
Is he your rep?
Yep. The big hubub is that he won’t hold a meeting in town and the one he is having nearby is at 10am on a weekday so all the old scared people can show up.
The bigger question here is, what the heck can we do to possibly elevate the level of actual discourse and debate in the U.S.? We’re probably not helping by calling the other side right-wing wingnuts (even though I use that description all the time), but the people on the fringe are being egged on by Glenn Beck et al.
I don’t mean to sound defeatist, but aren’t we doomed? What can we do to calm things down and have a good, honest discussion about the issues confronting us?
Maybe it’s time to look for work in Canada…
The problem with Obama is that he wants to make sure the companies get their cut, so he’s hiding behind bipartisanship.
The second problem is that the people he’s supposedly bi-partisan with are all crazy.
In a way, we should be thankful. We’re it not for the fact that the wingnuts are so virulently anti-Obama because, holy shit, he’s a black man, Obama might actually be able to hide behind them and get corporate deals done. Since it’s so patently obvious that he can’t deal with them, it’s forced a lot of the corporations’ hands out into the open, and made it obvious that the health-care thing is all about money.
The thing is, the wingnuts are actually crazy people. I can’t stress this enough. They are not rational in the slightest. And we progressives, God bless us, are naive little critters sometimes, and wonder ” Oh, how can we save the poor little folk from themselves? sigh flutter eyelashes sigh flutter sigh”…
We can’t do that with these people. We just have to accept that they are crazy and work behind a different principle than us, that there is no way to raise the discourse, to discuss calmly and reasonably with them issues based on factual reality. There is no way to do this.
The best we can do is take back control of the House and Senate from them, and then ridicule them. They are there to be ridiculed. As progressives, we don’t kill people except in very extreme circumstances, but we can ridicule them. Mock them. Take them to task for their lies. Pound away at them verbally. Conservatives are a dead weight, a millstone, around the neck of America. We cannot reason with it, we can simply show it for what it is: madness and insanity in a nice suit.
If you want to see what wingnuttia is like, take a look at the >1000 comments on this article in the Dallas Morning News. I am pained to say that unfortunately, I live in the Dallas area.
http://www.dallasnews.com/shar…..nts_anchor
No one but Fox would re-play that. I saw the video of him saying that exactly, Photo-shopped?
