Dick Cheney pretends to be shooting quail when he’s really gunning for his arch-nemesis, Harry Whittington.

Karl Rove and David Broder dine on quail. What were they REALLY doing?

I just know there’s a good quail-based conspiracy theory to he had here, but I can’t figure out what it is.

Always remember the following:

1) As TPM’s Josh Marshall reminds us every now and then, DC is wired for Republicans and has been since 1969:

We’re coming off of, or at least we’ve had a period of (because who knows about the future) thirty plus years of conservative dominance of Washington. By some measures you could say forty years. But at least thirty, notwithstanding Bill Clinton’s eight years in office. That conditions a generation of people with mindsets based around Republicans being the party of power, the party whose ideas get vindicated at the polls. Most of all Washington is a city that coddles up to and worships power. But a generation of one party holding the reins selects for certain kinds of journalists in key positions of power, the policy experts at the think tanks who get the journalists calls, the lobbyists who move the most money and so forth. You build up a set of assumptions about what kinds of people and ideas are respectable and which aren’t. Which are old-fashioned, which are ‘cutting edge’ and so forth. Who defines conventional wisdom?

In all of these respects, DC remains overwhelmingly wired for the GOP.

Over time, the formal government shapes the para-government. But there’s no immediate transition. In fact, in the short-run there’s usually an intensified conflict between the two. And you see evidence of the disconnect in repeated failures of people in the capital to predict the reactions of the country to key political developments — which is something you’ve seen repeatedly in 2006 and 2008. And even into 2009.

The general media’s been increasingly wired for Republicans since about 1979, to the point where it is almost impossible to get onto national TV, print and radio if you talk any sort of sense. In both DC’s and the general national media’s cases, Broder is part of the wiring.

2) As a result, Broder speaks for all of the DC punditti and hangers-on and lobbyist buddies and whatnot when he spews stuff that reinforces GOP talking points, no matter how venal, amoral, illogical, or just plain stupid. Just as Broder now argues that a Democratic president having adulterous nookie and hiding it is much worse than Bush/Cheney/Rove hiding the real reasons they wanted to kill and torture hundreds of thousands of people, Doris Kearns Plagiarist Goodwin argued vehemently that Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky was worse than Bush the Elder pardoning Cap Weinberger and all the other Iran-Contra principals who hadn’t already had slaps on the wrist doled out to them.

Clinton is an imperfect person in an imperfect world, but well meaning, as apposed to republicans in general!

“Clintons actions harmed nobody”. Did I get this right? A presidency where domestic government spending was less than Reagan. A bogus surplus as a result. Botched healthcare, no electric battery development. In short, a bogus guy and girl for eight years with the likes of George Tenet, Sandy Berger and Robert Rubin. Yeah, he kept you out of war unless you happened to live in Belgrade.

Ugh,

Don’t bring up Clinton. That wagging finger, “I did not have…”.

Some lies are more direct than others, no matter what they are about.

I write this because I truly see the unwinding of this nation. We can all speculate on the cause and mine would be unfettered out of control soulless capitalism and greed. But that is not the point. We seem to be rapidly approaching either anarchy or fascism. Democracy seems only a distant memory.

Our justice system is useless. We have no accountability and public officials lie like a rug.
