Kseniya Simonova, the winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent – Sand Animation.
Here, she recounts Germany conquering Ukraine in the second world war. She brings calm, then conflict. A couple on a bench become a woman’s face; a peaceful walkway becomes a conflagration; a weeping widow morphs into an obelisk for an unknown soldier. Simonova looks like some vengeful Old Testament deity as she destroys then recreates her scenes – with deft strokes, sprinkles and sweeps she keeps the narrative going. She moves the judges to tears as she subtitles the final scene "you are always near".
What’s on your mind?

Jeebers, I did that in such a hurry I forgot the period.
.
hey mary mcc – how’s sac?
I thought that sand art is about the coolest! I wonder how she got started?
hey loohoo – how ya doing? this video just astonished me – she really is amazing
That vid is amazing, Suz.
Sac is hot but will be cooling down in a day or so to around 85ish. How is the bay?
rain is in the forecast here – starting friday – looking forward to it. we’ve not had a decent rainstorm in quite a while
I am going to Berkeley and San Anselmo tomorrow. Lunch with oldest daughter and spending the night with the youngest.
that sounds like fun mary – sept is usually a perfect month weatherwise for visiting the bay area and seeing your girls is always good :)
I love this Suz, thank you so much!
Hey Mary how is the job search going for your RN daughter? Keeping her in my mind.
Evening pups.
Got a couple of questions if it’s alright.
First of all, what does it mean when one of the 65 critters we’ve got down as pledged to vote no unless it includes a “robust” public option, namely CongressCritter Anthony Weiner, says this on National TV tonight?
Note the last sentence. I’ve been impressed with Weiner up to now with his support for not only a public option, but for single payer. But how do you square a pledge to vote no unless it includes a public option with “then we’ll have to settle for less?”
My other question is a bit more personal, and involves puter tech. Do folks get a little upset at asking that type of stuff here? If so, I’ll let it go. I’ve lived without being able to access anything at The Seminal for a couple of weeks now, guess I’ll get used to it.
Whoa, I’ve never seen anything even close to the spontaneity and manual artistry of that. Thanks Suzanne.
Hey Suzanne!
I’m off to Philly tonight after work — I haven’t seen MrCE’s parents since Christmas ‘08. Hoping to have great weather to sit on the porch to see sunsets and maybe have MSCE join us from Brooklyn. If she is well enough and can take the train to Phila.
Oh and what’s zed???
Since I’m buggin folks with questions tonight. :)
hey margot
hey ofguy
hey emerson
hey ce
claiming the first comment… it goes back to when the first comment would get a zero # instead of a 1
She decided to wait until she takes her boards before applying for anymore work. She takes them next Friday. And she is going to do an internship for six months at Santa Rosa J.C. It will keep her skills sharp while looking for work.
It means that Weiner is going to cave.
and, OldFatGuy, questions are good. We all had to get up to speed at one time or another.
we love questions
Ahh, thanks much Suz.
You know what they say, knowledge is power.
And with knowledge like this, I might just become a force to be reckoned with, I reckon. :)
so how’s everyone doing tonight? what’s it like in your neck of the woods?
Krugman has a long article at the NYT “How did economists get it so wrong?” It gives some historical perspective on economic theory, but for a variety of reasons I found his take irritating and self-serving.

hey hugh – nice seeing ya here on the dark side – how ya been?
that’s my take. also.
evening suz, pups.
hey sunny – what’s shakin?
Hi Suz. I have a question (lots of ‘em): Did the Congresscritters who signed the Pledge to vote No if there’s no PO already get the $$$ raised for them? Or or we holding it until after the vote?
A bigger Q is this: If we have money for making wars and the military requires good healthy young’uns, then why can’t the country support health care for all?
PS. That’s some beautiful art. Thanks.
I’m glad to hear that about the internship.
I have a feeling that this flu season will see a lot of new hires in her profession.
hey pat9 – long time no see – how ya been?
Well, here goes the other question.
And please, mods, don’t flag this for the tech guys. We’ve already played email tag and concluded the problem is mine, not this sites.
Couple of weeks ago I became unable to access anything at The Seminal. If I click on any of all the links that run accross the top of the page, all work fine except the The Seminal.
I get an HTTP 501/505 error.
Now, I’d bet it’s probably something simple for someone that knows IE well, some setting under options or something, but I’m just a total ass when it comes to knowledge of this sort, so if anyone has any tips to try, I’ll give em a try. Already tried a few suggested by the tech guy. I even upgraded from IE 7 to IE 8, and still get the same error message.
The strange thing is I had never had problems until that Friday about two weeks ago. Then, no can do. Nada.
If I feel like taking my laptop out of it’s case and get it chugging, it works just fine and dandy. It’s newer than this desktop, and uses Vista whereas this 2002 model uses XP. But, like I said before, the first few weeks I was here I accessed The Seminal just fine like all the other sites.
Strange, and I’d bet it’s something stupid I inadvertently did.
well folks – any ideas what this is?
and where’s nahant when we need him?
Hey Suz, hey everybody…and waving to good neighbor OFG. I seem to be turning into a night owl again lately.
hey ll – how ya doing?
Doing fine here Suz, and thank you — burning up some more leave from work ;-) How’s things out there in beautiful Oregon?
We have money for warmaking but not medical care for all because we are fucked up. We’re still very much a Puritan “those who don’t work, don’t eat” nation. And that is just fucked up.
i’m enjoying oregon ll – looking forward to the change of seasons. can already feel hints of fall in the air.
Hi LL and CE and everyone;)
Wow, just finished the vid.
Thanks for posting that. Seeing talent like like that just brings joy and wonder. Awesome.
Hey, howdy neighbor.
Been a beautiful week. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Hey Margot! :-)
Suz, we’ve been having a little taste of autumn around here too, and I love it.
It sure has been great this week, hasn’t it?
Wish I had an answer to your IE questions, but I use Firefox; hope you can find a resolution.
spiderpaws sent me this video – after seeing it i knew i had to feature it.
if you click on her name in the post it will take you to the british article about her and her work. if you click on sand animation in the post, it will take you to the utube page which has other videos of her work in the rec’d box
I was thinking about spidey lately, haven’t seen her around in quite a while.
Been reading about Afghanistan at the Foreign Policy Journal: The unwinnables parts one and two.
Engaging sympathetic introduction to the country and people. Highly recommended.
Went there to read the Lawrence Wilkerson interview. Betcha he’s persona non grata in some quarters now.
Hi, Suzanne
Hi, Pups!
Whazzup?
Yesterday’s phone interview was with an HR recruiter. Tomorrow I talk to the hiring manager (phone). This is for a full-time, permanent hire position with a local biopharma that’s doing pretty well (and hiring!). It would be 2nd shift (2-midnight), but that involves some extra pay-ola.
God, I really really, really need this job…
FunnyWheelieDiva
woohoo funny d – fingers and toes crossed for ya
We are getting the hard hurricane rains and winds. It is blowing in through our two bedroom windows. This is the first time in 11 years that this is leaking. Not seeing where it is coming in or how other than hurricane force winds.
The water is coming through the top & bottom slider, hitting the mini blinds and spraying all over our bed……. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
That’s great news FWD — sending good vibes your way that it works out!
oh noz katymine!
Thanks, Suzanne
Apparently my res also got forwarded to another manager for another position.
This is like, the best news I’ve had in MONTHS.
FWDiva
omg katymine, is that from Jimena?
Thanks, LL
Oh, Katymine, Sorry to hear about your storm! Is there anywhere drier in the house you can sleep? Maybe on the leeward side?
FWDiva
Thanks, Margot. I didn’t know that was a Puritan thing.
People who don’t eat CAN’T work so it goes round and round.
It’s confusing for me trying to reconcile the contradictions. All are created equal. Not really. We have guaranteed rights. Not really. Anyone can get ahead if they work hard (ha, if they can find work at all). Not that I’ve noticed for some time. … It’s a challenge to not become cynical.
Suz, I’m fine. Mostly lurking. The trolls lately are a bother. How’s the dental stuff going?
i see the dentist next week for a cleaning of my bottom teeth and then see the traveling dentist the following week for some of the complicated extractions. am trying to figure out how many teeth i can afford to have done this month.
What great news–I’m pulling for you!
i think we are seeing the influx in trolls because we are making waves. everytime jane is on tv we get new readers and new trolls. our take the pledge effort is worrisome to the status quo
at least that is my take on it
Well the puritan thing is just my take on it, I don’t know if that’s really why. But I do remember reading that people when they first came here to settle were told “Them that don’t work don’t eat.” And I see how you have to be kind of hard in a new colony, just to survive. We’re kind of past that.
The dental thing is going, slowly, getting it taken care of.
~Edit~ Now I realize you meant that for Suz. Doh! sorry.
All the best to you Suz.
Diva, I rooting for you too.
Katy, I hope the rains don’t cause you much stress. Or much damage inside.
Mary, All the best to your girl.
Christine, Is your girl all better now?
I was on amoxycillin for 3 wks a few months ago to treat Lyme disease. Lucky me to get it treated a few days after the tick bite.
Good night to all Pups. Be well.
g’nite pat9
My fingers have been crossed, I’ll keep em that way. Sounds really good.
Thanks, Margot! Thanks, Sunny!

Suz, are Token and Bailey still happy in their new home?
token has settled in well – bailey has had a harder time of it but appears to be finally used to the place. i can’t believe it has been almost a year already – i moved in oct 1st last year
Oh sorry katy.
Don’t let the mattress get soaked. I did and it turned ugly, had to replace the sucker (mold, mildew or something else evil grew in it).
Yes this from the hurricane, the rain stopped for now so that Elmore and I could tape up the windows. Just felt the rain spitting at me after I just went to asleep. Now I’m awake…… another grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Was thinking it was coming up on a year now; and I’ve just had a look at some of your latest pics — beautiful, peaceful place :-)
it is ll – except, of course during winter storms (laughing) this old place creaks like a ship when the wind is blowing
OK, pups
Signing off for now.
Thanks for the company. Sleep well, everyone!
FWDiva
oh katy – hardly nothing worse than laying in bed and feeling ‘wet’
g’nite funny d
Hi Pups! How are you all tonight?
hey jofish – how ya doing?
I still have about 3 1/12 years until retirement, but I’ve been thinking that northern CA or OR would be great places to check out if I wanted to totally relocate after I retire. A friend from work retired a couple of years ago and went out to Eureka, CA and he is totally loving life.
if life hadn’t had other plans, i wudda been retiring in october of this year.
Cute Suz….. really cute…..
Life sometimes gets in the way, don’t it :-P
Time I headed out…thanks Suz, and good night all!
g’nite ll
*innocent look*
Good, enjoying the insomnia and the nice evenings now that I’m not employed. LOL!
Those “innocent looks” are tells, Suz…
doncha just love not having to deal with alarm clocks joefish? i swear that’s my favorite thing about being retired – no alarm clocks.
fork
Ok going to check the bed….. think it wasn’t that wet and get to sleep…. thankfully Mayo check in isn’t until 1pm…. having more scans…. very worried about bone mets…..
g’nite katy – i’m thinking positive thoughts and sending em your way
all the best Katy… my thoughts are with you.
evening, suzanne
guess its time for me to head out myself. thank you for all the conversations tonight
g’nite all
I thought we could make it.
I know damn well we could have worked it out.
Thought we could could, I knew we could could.
Yes we could could. Why can’t we?
If we wanna, yes, we can can.
sorry to be leaving as you are coming in ppd and mr why
no problem — see you next time — be well
The change so many voted for has morphed into nothing more than a bipartisanship fetish. To paraphrase Gertrude Stein, there is no there there. We have a POTUS who is nothing more than the Hollow Man.
