First, a brief history of the Republican Party, in two parts.
Teddy Roosevelt on progressive taxation, 1910.
I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes, and in another tax which is far more easily collected and far more effective, a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion, and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate.
Michele Bachmann on progressive taxation, 2009.
“This is slavery,” Bachmann said after claiming many Americans pay half their income to taxes. “It’s nothing more than slavery.”
Now the taxes in this country are at historic lows and those slaves in the top bracket are currently paying 35%. But don’t stop her — she’s rolling.
Michele Bachmann railed against the dangers of health care reform and other Democratic initiatives, warning the proposals “have the strength to destroy this country forever.”
“This cannot pass,” the Minnesota Republican told a crowd at a Denver gathering sponsored by the Independence Institute. “What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass.”
…
“Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom,” she said. “And we may never be able to restore it if we don’t man up and take this one on.”
Manning up, slitting wrists, ripping guts out, saving the country from destruction. It’s like she’s performing her own one woman version of Red Dawn.
“Something is way crazy out there,” Bachmann said in her remarks.
Indeed.

Michele Bachmann…Says Lots of Other Crazy Shit
in other breaking news, the sun still rises in the east, and a dog bit a man.
Congress has trolls too.
Can I just remind people of one thing in their ludicrous Obama=Hitler Taxes+Slavery rants? Hitler went to jail because he was virulently opposed to taxes, and refused to pay them.
Need we say more?
Actually, for those John Galts lucky enough to have capital gains, the tax rate is at most 15%.
I would say ’she’s armed for bear’ but you civilized people probably don’t recognize that red meat remark that gets thrown around in flyover land. This is playing to the really, really base that votes for the throat – oh, is it wrists today? – slitters.
If you’re going to go off on a batshit crazy rant, you’re not likely to check your facts first. Or at all.
The facts are not at issue with the wingnuts. But in addition, in 2003 corporate taxes accounted for only 20% of total receipts because of tax breaks and offshored profits, and has gone down since then.
Wha? Do they even have bear in the grassy prarie?
And of course next year the estate tax rate goes to 0%.
One of my all time favorite Paul Krugman columns:
Bad Heir Day.
Scary, isn’t it, “At least two subspecies of Black Bear are thought to occur in Texas”.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/hu…..blackbear/
Come for the bears, stay for the spectacle.
Where was her “manning up” during the Bush Administration when it came to spending?
Gotta tune out the politician who cannot deliver a speech with one provable fact and is all rhetoric. That speech reads like a collection of speech bubbles from Marvel Comics.
Someone needs to send child services out to check her children for wrist scars and Gawd knows what else!
Oh, lookee. She’s still wearin’ that Waffen SS jacket.
“…way…”
She honestly use “way crazy” in a speech? Was it a speech given to middle school students?
Wait, I retract that remark because it is an insult to middle school students.
Well, I’ll be darned. Maybe we can get some of those bears elected to office. You know, raise the quality of congress a little…
LOL. I hear that all the time from adults now, particularly those in their 20s-30s. I still say “far out” and all that groovy stuff.
So, she hasn’t noticed that teh crazy seems to follow her around like a shadow?
Is this one of those ludicrous Conservatives=Hitler rants?
Michele Bachmann should be locked up in the same padded cell as Glenn Beck. On the other hand, what if they should happen to spawn? It’s a dilemma.
Next she’ll work in a, “Wait for it…wait for it…”
She’s into epicness…
“Far out,” is simply a classic and groovy.
“Can I just remind people of one thing in their ludicrous Obama=Hitler Taxes+Slavery rants? Hitler went to jail because he was virulently opposed to taxes, and refused to pay them.

**************
Is this one of those ludicrous wingnut troll rants?
We need them here in TX where the quality is so bad we got laws introduced to give blind folks hunting licenses, a Bd of Ed that is revising textbooks to teach creationism, and such like. And today, U.TX backed out of the merit scholarship program, they say to give more to needy and less to the capable;

Thomas Jefferson, founding father:
That’s the only kind there is.
Oh, my bad. I do that in some posts but only one iteration. Damn.
LOL!
“My bad.”
(You know we could effective ruin this thread without intending to.) :)
in addition, if there would be no “progressive tax” that means no sales tax, no local tax, no useage tax no gasoline tax and no road tax since those taxes more the middle and lower class then the upper classes which spend a far lower percentage of their wage
those taxes I just mentioned happen to be progressive away from the upper class
therefore, taxing everyone the same percentage of their wage a no progressive tax or “flat tax” would overall wind up a far higher rate for the upper class then they pay now and a far lower rate for the middle and lower class then they pay for their over-all tax burden
andrew jackson;
Good point.
Well, I’ll be! You’re right! This IS another of those ludicrous Conservatives=Hitler rants.
I am really disappointed. I truly expected much better from supposedly intelligent people. How will you ever muster the gall to criticize a right-wing wacko for some stupid Nazi analogy after you’ve done something like this?
You are no better than the people you criticize. You use the same reprehensible tactics.
Shame, shame.
You betcha.
Sorry.
Awwww, man. Nah, I gotta go back to work and then take Kismet to the vet.
Namaste
Please don’t feed the troll.
Holy Batshit, Bachmann.
I may be a troll, but I’m not a flaming hypocrite.
Bachman is a certifiable moron. Sadly, I think that she truly believes the garbage that comes out of her mouth. If the people of Minnesota’s 6th district don’t toss her out on her ass next year, they deserve to have such a loon as their representative. I’ll bet they just cringe every time Bachman opens her piehole. The fact that Bachman is so unacquainted with basic facts does not seem to trouble her in the least.
that’s a terrific post and I who have not studied the life nor times of hitler did not know it
I did know howver that bush’s grandfather was a sstrong supporter of hitler and also was involved in a coup against the president of the united states
Before you go blaming the Republicans for Teddy’s progressive views, remember he broke with the Repulicans in 1912 and formed the progressive or bull moose party to push his progressive ideas. The Republicans said no thank you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_roosevelt
or is it wholly batshit?
You’re killin’ me here!
SD! Ruth!
Have a good one.
Besides, someone beat us to it.
The rest is scroll. Epicness…
I don’t think it was trollish mrcleaveland, I don’t think concervativces are hilterish but some of their positions surely are
I did not know hitler went to jail for refusing to pay taxes and if true I believe that is an excellant post
now, I do not believe concervatives are akin to hitler, I happen to be a concervative myself, although the concervatives today are not concervative at all, they don’t want to concerve anything, they are “neo-cons”
the neo-cons don’t want to concerve ecomomy, ecology, military, law
but that’s another discussion
Bachmann isn’t wearing no slit
skirtwristsYes, celebrate your Nazi analogies. And ignore the troll who dares to tweak your conscience.
Gotta go watch Rachel’s show from last night now, I understand it was outstanding. Carry on, and agreed, troll feeding just makes them feel appreciated.
Said as he crashes and burns.
By the way Blue Moon it is over.
Obama’s at 45% and dropping. He’s going to drop the PO like he dropped Rev. Wright.

If you can find the post where I made a “Nazi analogy,” cite it. Otherwise, apologize.
Do you also “know” that Joseph P. Kennedy was a strong supporter of Hitler?
I didn’t think so.
Speaking of Hitler like actions:
Der Obama is addressing all prek-6 students on the 8th.

no, do tell please, I wouldn’t mind seeing those links either
Just a couple of days ago, there was posted on this site a picture of a sign of some sort that had a swastika painted on it. The sign was that of a Democrat congressman. The people who commented on this vandalism were furious, and rightly so.
So why do you do the same thing?
Here it is.
“Something is way crazy
out therehere,” Bachmann saidinof her remarks.Fixed.
Oh, just stop, please. All of you. Mr. Right is only here to pick a fight, SamBOT too.
aha, I found it, boy you really know how to stretch a fact into a fantasy don’t you;
he was trying to prevent war, that’s not supporting hitler that’s being against war
now prescott on the other hand actually supported hitler, two completely differant things
but thanx for playing, now I see you really are a troll
You know, you make a valid point. People like Glenn Beck, El Rushbo and Bachmann, who have been accusing Obama of being like Hitler since he took office, have made parodies like that one, even with a clown like Bachmann, passe.
Nice cherry pick.
I commend you.
Read further blind man.
Kennedy had a close friendship with Nancy Astor; the correspondence between them is reportedly replete with anti-Semitic tropes.[20] As Edward Renehan notes:
As fiercely anti-Communist as they were anti-Semitic, Kennedy and Astor looked upon Adolf Hitler as a welcome solution to both of these “world problems” (Nancy’s phrase)…. Kennedy replied that he expected the “Jew media” in the United States to become a problem, that “Jewish pundits in New York and Los Angeles” were already making noises contrived to “set a match to the fuse of the world.”[21]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kennedy
I’ve seen quotes from Joe K. (supposedly made in private) saying he thought fascism was the wave of the future, I don’t know if he “actively” supported fascists as Prescott Bush did, but I wouldn’t be shocked.
you and mccleavland are right, I didn’t read far enough;
not good, so we’ll both agree the parents of bush and kennedy had sympathy for hitler
I have to admit, not happy about that at all
BT
Thanks for all the work you and the team are doing putting the heat on the miscreants. Their screeching is becoming more desperate by the day. Please keep up the great work.
Dickless Cheney and Twitchy Bush, The Hague ‘10
Diminishing marginal utility of wealth, and marginal propensity to consume. That is all.
Is it ironic that the people generally opposed to progressive taxation are ostensibly the same people who should be capable of determining that their seventh yacht doesn’t provide them as much utility as the first?
The seventh yacht goes to the third ex-wife.
So you’re a straight hypocrite?
Bachmann probably doesn’t believe a word of this crap herself. But she’s stirring up the mentally unsound wingnuts. When they do whatever kind of weird shit they’re going to do, Bachmann will go, “Why I never had any idea anyone would do such a thing!”
WOLVERINES!!!!!!
sorry
I think she does believe it, which is actually worse.
Also.
Wow teh cumpleat stoopid is out today.
Man, you read threads like this and it encourages you to go out and call local pols to increase education spending.
Thanks for the reminder.
Gonna take care of that right away.
Oh, and Bachmann said something crazy???
Well, look at the right wing trolls that grace us with their presence.
She’s just gotta pander for teh stoopid vote, doncha know.
That Michele. What’ll we do for humor when she gets trounced next election?
Robert Morgenthau has reported that there is $1.3 TRILLION in illegal monies deposited in the Cayman Islands, ill gotten gains from crime. How much of ‘legal’ money is deposited there and out of the reach of our taxation system?
“What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists,” did they do it?? cause that would be great for the country.
And who knew…Al Capone…Republican martyr…jailed for not paying his taxes. Under that socialist President FDR!!!
Don’t you think it’s a bit ironic for someone to choose to use a racist perjorative as their alias…and declaim that someone else is an anti-Semite.
Oh for gawd’s sake, stop making sense.
Maybe a “white hot” hypocrite ;-)
Or a “smoldering” hypocrite?
How did it come to pass that a state as replete with sensible shoes, thermal underwear and smart, prgressive people, as Minnesota, produce and then elect a mentally unstable loser like Bachman? And where is that Farmer Labor Party when we need it?
There were, BTW, lots of anti-Semitism prevalent in that era…particularly amongst Catholics and isolationists. They actually resisted much of what FDR represented (yes, even Joe Kennedy…thankfully his kids rose above that). Father Charles Coughlin was another example. A hangover from that era is Pat Buchanan…though I suspect it’s a theme prevalent in many talk-radio hosts, though directed at other groups who are the scapegoats du jour.
Nazis translated: German National Socialist German Workers Party. A political CLASS system that created it’s own civilian defense force (exactly as Obama decreed) seized the countries banking system, automobile industry, freedom and health care, forcing an entire country to depend on it’s big brother to exist.
All of the above is exactly what the conservative movement is forcibly against.
All of the above is exactly what the Progressive movement (Progressive word is disguised as Marxism) is advocating.
Oh crap, please don’t bit in this dreck.
If any of the slaves are paying 35%, then they need better accountants.
Maybe the whipping is stopping them from thinking straight.
I’ve heard this progressive taxation = slavery meme before. From a wingnut acquaintance a couple of years ago. He claimed he invented the idea and was writing a “white paper” he wanted published. In the end maybe he sent it to Bachmann, as she was probably the only one crazy enough to mention the idea in the the presence of other sentient beings.
Surely, one of the stupidest ideas ever thought up.
Gee, I wonder how her kid’s “indoctrination” is coming along. It seems to me that by some stroke of good fortune for him, the boy was given a larger helping of brains than his mom ended up with.
