Japan’s recent election boosted a new party into national power by a landslide. Could that happen in the U.S.?
Japan’s voting public recently tossed out the sclerotic, entrenched Powers That Be (the Liberal Democratic Party, LDP) in favor of the upstart Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). Given the lock on power maintained by the LDP, Japan was essentially a one-party state for the past five decades. Other than a brief dalliance with another party in 1993 (and only in the Upper House of the Diet), the Japanese public continued empowering the same old party hacks and the same old alliances of rural constituencies, the construction industry, global exporters, zombie banks/ insurers and government ministries.

but the time had come for change, real change.

‘Change’ polls well, thats why Obama’s marketing people chose it as one of his buzzwords, and it helped get him elected.

But, in the internet era, its harder to fool people with the same trick twice.

The parallels to the U.S. are not trivial, but deep. Here in the U.S., crony capitalism collusion with State Elites (the Fed and Treasury, the executive branch, toothless regulatory agencies captured by Wall Street and political hacks, etc.) has duct-taped together a structurally flawed economy by expanding debt and expanding the class of debt-serfs to carry that debt: stupendous mortgages, consumer debt, student loans and of course all the public debt, which debt-serfs and their children will pay for as taxpayers.

So, there is time, 2012, will we be ready?

John Hiatt three times in that span, once with the four piece, twice as a solo.

Landreth is the most under known great slide player ever. A HOSS of a picker.

The band was having a great time that night and management had to shut them down. I think they would have played til dawn otherwise. That was definitely a hot one. Tip’s always had these great artists playing in a smallish club because playing there was like playing in the Grand ole opry of the blues.

This is the needle Democrats may have to thread if they want a public option, and at the same time, want to bypass a Republican filibuster. And the key for them will be keeping conservative Democrats on board.

“A very robust public option that scores significant savings would presumably be easy to justify doing through reconciliation,” says a Senate Democratic aide. “But it is still being studied whether other, more moderate versions of a public option could pass parliamentary muster.”

“Savings” at whose expense? That of the healthcare industry? You’ve got to be kidding!
