| By: A Siegel Monday August 10, 2009 6:30 pm |
Perhaps you’ve missed it, but in the climate / politics world there’s been a bit of a scandal that blew on 31 July: paid by the coal industry, a lobbying firm had sent forged letters to members of Congress against climate legislation. Don’t worry … it was all a ‘temporary’ employee who has been fired. Never mind. Nothing there. Go back to watching TV.
FDL Movie Night: American Casino |
| By: Lisa Derrick Monday August 10, 2009 5:00 pm |
American Casino delves into the mortgage meltdown mess and subsequent downward spiral on Wall Street, exposing the deregulation, greed and heartless manipulation of home-ownership hopes that fueled the real estate bubble. The documentary explains plenty about the risky selling of mortgages by banks and other lenders and investors–among them, a mortgage loan salesman discusses how borrowers’ incomes were inflated to justify a loan and a banker explains these loans were sold to idiots, while Bloomberg reporter Mark Pittman translates the economic evil.
That’s the financial side, this gambling with people’s live via reselling mortgages based on false data has led to our economic downturn–with losses in the trillions of dollars–requiring bailouts and stimulus packages.

I assumed from the first time I heard about this motion that it was going to end up in SCOTUS. No matter who won 2nd Circuit, I don’t think it should end there. This is such an important issue of balancing privacy rights vs. government transparency and accountability. This is really important stuff.

Perriello’s Health Care Town Hall: Fear and Respect in VA-5 |
| By: Mike Stark Monday August 10, 2009 1:45 pm |
These folks were passionate about loving their country and not wanting to see it become a “socialist state.” They’ve been hyped up on fear – fear of the government killing seniors, rationing health care and, surprisingly, running the country into insurmountable debt. They are convinced the government fucks up everything it touches. They know in their hearts that if the government takes over health care, this country will cease to exist as they’ve known it all of their lives.
