Are You with a Local Democratic Party? The Public Option Needs Your Help

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday August 25, 2009 1:00 pm

If you’re a member of a local DFA group, a Democratic club, a Drinking Liberally or any other local organization, we’d like to have you pass the resolution demanding the inclusion of a strong public option in any final health care bill.  You can find the language and sign on here.  And you can also sign on as an individual.

We’ve got the momentum going.  Let’s  keep ratcheting it up.

Cheney Stops Trying

By: Gregg Levine Tuesday August 25, 2009 11:59 am

It is not a surprise that Dick Cheney has seized the opportunity to issue another affirmation of his love of torture; what is a surprise, however, is how lazy and transparent Dick’s defense has gotten.

Blue Dog John Tanner (TN): No “Mass Support” for Public Option; “Probably Not” Going to Happen

By: Blue Texan Tuesday August 25, 2009 10:30 am

Might there be another reason John Tanner opposes the public option?

Join Us Tonight in Reston, Virginia, for Jim Moran/Howard Dean Event

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday August 25, 2009 10:15 am

Howard Dean will be joining Jim Moran at a town hall in Reston, Virginia tonight. Randall Terry is going to be targeting it, and there’s a lot of buzz on both sides about it, so it should be quite an event. I’ll be there with Virginia blogger Ben Tribbett of NotLarrySabato, who got Terry McAuliffe to agree to do a fundraiser for the first Virginia Democrat in the Senate or House who agrees to take the pledge.

After the event, Ben and I are going to be hosting a get together for all the bloggers who attend. It will be at Clyde’s of Reston (google map): 11905 Market Street, Reston VA, 20190, (703) 787-6601.

Talking Health Care Reform With Matt Taibbi

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday August 25, 2009 9:01 am

I remember being at the Ways & Means committee for markup last month. Lobbyists were paying in the range of $3500 a seat for homeless people to hold places in line for them. It was like being on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade — everyone was yelling votes into their cell phones, texting on their blackberries furiously to legislative aids who slipped pieces of paper

Holder Overturns Justice Jackson and Nuremberg

By: Peterr Tuesday August 25, 2009 7:05 am

AG Holder again made it clear that the DOJ will not prosecute interrogators who were “just following orders” validated by the OLC interrogation memos. How sad to see him baptize the Nuremberg Defense, squander the legacy of Justice Jackson, and repudiate one of the finest moments in legal history.

Tortured Logic: GOP Senators Concerned Prosecutor Will Make You Dead

By: Christy Hardin Smith Tuesday August 25, 2009 6:08 am

Today, it’s another inane installment of the continuing saga of the GOP’s longest-running program wherein the buck stops anywhere but here. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the overwrought and not-so-dulcet tones of Kit Bond and friends, in Accountability For Thee, But Not For Me

Early Morning Swim: Lawrence Wilkerson on Olbermann Discusses Torture Investigation

By: Blue Texan Tuesday August 25, 2009 4:55 am

Greeenwald: “As stomach-turning as these individual acts of sadism are, it is far worse to consider that only low-level interrogators will suffer consequences while those who were truly responsible — the criminally depraved leaders and lawyers who ordered and authorized it — will be protected.”

Oh please, oh please…well, not really
