Which means he was lying.
Instead of investigating those who carried out waterboarding and other tough tactics, Cheney said the Obama administration ought to pursue a different approach.
"We had a track record now of eight years of defending the nation against any further mass casualty attacks from al Qaeda," Cheney said. "The approach of the Obama administration should be to come to those people who were involved in that policy and say, ‘How did you do it? What were the keys to keeping this country safe over that period of time?’"
Since under the Clinton administration the nation suffered exactly zero mass casualty attacks from al Qaeda, the first thing Cheney did was to ask him how he did it, and then pursued exactly the same policies, right?

U.S. Senator John McCain, a torture survivor from his days as a captive during the Vietnam War, says his private comments about harsh interrogation methods were misrepresented by the Bush Administration in a recently released legal document intended to justify a six-day-long course of sleep deprivation for one CIA detainee in November of 2007
Donald Rumsfeld, on blaming of the CIA’s anal rape program on the “bad apples.” In the words of WS.

The CIA needs to modify its insignia to include plunger and broom handles, symbolizing the tools of its trade.
CIA torture confessions are considered actionable if they start Deliverance-style with “EEEEEEE!!!”
The observation was made in a Marcy thread yesterday that one of the reasons for torture was revenge. Revenge for what? Dickless Cheney was the source of al the “terror.”
Dickless and sidekick Twitchy, The Hague ’10.

No, He needs to do the perp walk.
If I may, that’s akin to a drunk driver responsible for multiple vehicular homicides congratulating themselves on 8 years of sobriety.
;>)
The reason for torture was to terrorize anyone who would dare interfere with the USA in ANYTHING. The gloves were off. No habeus, no lawyers, nothing. Any fate would befall anyone who even looked odd. 100 were killed in custody dozens were backed in a sealed shipping container in Bagram.
There was nothing to learn from torturing these people because they had no big plans. At best they were disgruntled crazy people who had learned to hate the USA imperialism and decided to take their own direct action. A few would band together perhaps to cause some mischief. This was not a real threat to the nation. It was a police matter.
But the torture of people will produce false statements and false confessions and so the torturers can build any narrative they want.
So what were the plots that were foiled? Where were the people who were to carry them out? Who paid for these plots? If real intel was gathered why don’t we hear a pip of what it was?
We have a lot of mentally disturbed sadists in society. The best of them engage in consensual S&M but the rest of them enter the national security establishment for cover of their sadism and the opportunity to act on it. And then there are the mentally disturbed running around with guns, murdering and raping. And then there are the coward sadists like Cheney or get off on directing other sadists to do their bidding.
This is a very deep problem.
I’d love to see him in one of those bulletproof boxes in the Hauge, like the one they put Eichmann in…
Great analogy.
Mornin’ BT, pups.
Note the new and improved version of reality…”mass casualty attack.”
For many years – we heard the Bush administration state (and the MSM repeat as fact), that the US had been kept safe from a repeat of the original single terror attack on domestic soil.
That of course was and remains a lie.
The anthrax attacks were by every single definition a domestic terror attack, more horrifying to many than 9/11 itself. Subsequent domestic terror attacks included the falsely contrived color-coded threats, known to be false – themselves defined as terror.
This new term: “mass casualty attack,” is his way of getting us to forget all of the other forms of domestic terrorist activity that his Administration intentionally inflicted on we the people.
And the controlled media will parrot the line verbatim, seeking to rewrite history while manipulating present reality.
It seems not likely to happen. The USA has intimidated the rest of the world.
My sense is the rest of the world is trying to get away from the USA and survive. The entanglement after WWII hasn’t panned out.
Krugman’s last paragraph this morning:
My bold.
Krugman gets it. For those who wanted Mr Obama to change everything the minute he took office will not be pleased with Krugman’s comments but if they can’t handle the reality of the situation they’re only going to be frustrated to the nth degree. Notice Krugman says not days, weeks, or months. He says years. If you’re not in it for the long haul, well, I guess we’ll just have to wave buh bye to ya as we move ahead.
The USA may have intimidated the leaders in the world. The citizens, the workers, are smarter. We are now one of the world’s leading debtor nations. Military spending helped the USSR’s economic collapse. We are no different and the world knows it.
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it…

Persian night, babe
See the light, babe
Save us!

So when the music’s over
When the music’s over, yeah
When the music’s over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights

and good day to all
Hi sadly.
We have come to a turning point. We are facing the collapse of this nation in a very real way. Yes, as Krugmen point out the amount of heavy lifting to be done will take enormous effort and time.
But the issue becomes one of strategy. Incrementalists seem to think that getting the congress together is the only way to proceed to save the union. Perhaps they fear rebellion and violent backlash. The town halls seem to indicate that the violent nature of Americans will lead to this. The right has no problems with using their guns. Obama may be aware of this and is trying to placate this boiling anger just beginning to show.
He could take a more radical approach which would seem to be in order. Is that a hard pill to swallow? How will he deal with the 20% = 60 million on the right? Even if a small number go postal this would take on the appearance of a police state as violence from the right is suppressed.
The monied interest will fuel their foot soldiers to fight for them even it is actually against their own interests. We know how brain washed and dumbed down the people are.
The above is fairly self evident and hides the class war fare which has gone swimmingly for capital which is not about to give it up for the founding principal of life liberty and justice for all.
The left with its correct analysis and critique and perhaps even Obama gets this and is trying to weave an bob through a mind field can only scream for what is correct and demand it now. It was the message of Obama and they rightly want to see him honor his pledges. I think what he knows and can’t tell is that he is largely boxed in by powers much larger then he wields. This is the ugly secret of the american “shadow government” the powerful who are pulling the strings but aren’t voted for and don’t show their faces in public for who they are. We may sense it he’s probably met them up close and personal and they have read him into the program and he dismantles their control at his own peril and who knows who else would suffer.
Conspitatorial? yea… chess. He’s in check. His moves are limited.
Nuttin much up here. Gettin ready for a battery of tests on the old unit if ya know what I mean!
I thought he looked surprisingly sober.
Smirky, rude and insolent – but sober.
Hope that turns out alright. Don’t wanna have to worry about you and Norske both. Guess I’m gonna hafta pull some late night stuff if I wanna chat with Norske.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Thanks mon, one of those deals that they often find nothing but you are better off having checked out.
Roger that.
“Good” thing for Cheney still has his propaganda arm, Fox News, or nobody would listen to him at all.
This guy’s definition of “safe” really has me puzzled.
Meanwhile, here are a few tidbits I came up with this morning:
U.S. commander: Afghanistan situation serious
&
DID THE PLANNED OIL PIPELINE THROUGH AFGHANISTAN INFLUENCE AMERICA’S DECISION TO INVADE AND INSTALL A NEW GOVERNMENT THERE?
For yer first link: duh.
second: Does a bear shit in the woods? Is the Pope German?
*g*
I wanted Obama to keep his promises. I don’t expect overnight success, but I do expect honesty. So far there have been notabe lapses in that regard, and in areas where he COULD keep them. So far I am less than satisfied. Would McCain/Palin have been far worse? Undoubtedly. But I am not enamored of our leader – who isn’t doing much leading – these days.
is a bullfrog waterproof?
You nail it, BT. I know the blog’s moved on to a new thread, but had to stop back and say bravo! Chee-knee apologists double-teaming Contessa this morning. Your argument says it all. Chee-knee and his apologists about the business of jury nullification right now, methinks.
Oooh, Contessa now tellin’ another Rethug apologist that no, that might be what you want the debate to be about, but it is about torture.
You go, Contessa!
Nice pushback with reality.
Who is Contessa? Looks like alittle truth there.
Contessa is an MSNBC news reader.
I maintained early in Obama’s administration that he was not going to be transformational but would be merely transitional. What that transition is remains to be seen but given the current climate one can’t help be very concerned. Now Bernie Sanders would have been transformational, with fewer Blue Dogs of course. He has the potential of picking up the torch of Ted Kennedy.
Thanks….that’s really her name. I thought that part was snark.

I would have thought that the people ”soft on defense” were the people who, you know, actually let the US be attacked.
Silly me.
you know, i don’t watch fox “news.” i don’t listen to rush and his ilk. so why then do i have to read about what those like ex-vice president cum president cheney have to say? he is a paranoid, frightened and inept man whom he and his party were overwhelmingly voted out of office.
every news story that covers him, his daughter and their defense of torture only gives them power they have not earned and which most of us could care less. it is no longer relevant to the future of this country; we are having a difficult enough time dealing with their consequences.
