From the Saturday Night Live archieves – The French Chef. Per Wiki:
In a 1978 Saturday Night Live sketch, she was affectionately parodied by Dan Aykroyd continuing with a cooking show despite profuse bleeding from a cut to his thumb. It has been told that Julia loved this sketch so much that she would show it to friends at parties.

Yay!
Thanks, Suzanne! I love SNL’s Julia
FunnyWheelieDiva
hey funny d me too – and julia did also per the wiki
how’s seattle tonight?
Hi hi Funny D,
And, hi again, Suz. Dan A. used to be slim, huh?
hey demi
g’evening, Suze & Pups
hey ndfg
Hi, Suzanne,
Julia taught me the basics of good cooking, via her books, and only partially the TV shows. By that time, I was well into the whole towering edifice!
R and I were in your vicinity the last heat wave in Porland. We actually got enshrouded in a fog bank on the trail to Cape Lookout! Absolutely wonderful and the shots we obtained…priceless!
Next time we let you know. I’m going to Central OR Tuesday, but eventually we will get back to the beach.
Oh, my fave, Julia, and SNL. I loved the film, too. As a bride I could not boil water. Our year in Paris in 1978/79 taught me how to shop and cook. My bible then: French Provincial Cooking by Elizabeth David.
hey starbuck – nice to see your fonts again – give me a call next time and we can hook up at the same coffee shop in oceanside
hey ce – julia helped so many of us learn how to cook – to not be afraid of cooking.
Learning to shop for food was an eye opening experience. My goodness, speaking French with vendors about how to cook was, well, just wonderful.
I love Elizabeth David. Her nephew Johnny Grey does great kitchen design.
OK, I said I was leaving, then Gus jumped in my lap and made me watch the videos.
Hi NDFG and bye again.
paris is on my list *sigh* you will take lotsa pictures and share right ce?
She was such an inspiration. And Elizabeth David, an English cook and writer, just wonderful.
You got it!
I’m so buzzed about all that is happening on multiple political fronts from city on up. I simply want to scream or beat a rug or something. Instead, I will hide out in the Strawberry mountains or maybe the Wallowas for a few days.
How’s beach life treating you these days? Traffic jams thanks to those behmouth RV”s on 101?
hey and g’nite gnome
i’m such a hermit that the tourists don’t really bother me. more traffic out on the road when i walk down to get mail.
Hi, Pups,
Hi, Suz…
Seattle was warmish today, but it’s nice and cool now.
Just enjoying the James Bond marathon.
So, how is everyone tonight?
FWDiva
Yes, I will! We leave late September and will return in October. On other trips I have been known to buy many boxes of sea salt. And herbs. We shall see. We plan to stay in Paris the entire trip, and take day trips by train.
gonna be taking the laptop or are you gonna go cold turkey while you are there?
Cold turkey, and our phones don’t work either. Our apartment has wifi, but we will not partake.
yikes ce – i dunno if i could do a month cold turkey like that.
I used to by knives when we traveled. Great purchases in France and Spain, but you know, no longer.
Now the news is saying that 60 structures have been lost in Auburn.
I am going to get my emergency supplies together tomorrow. We used them up when we were without electricity for 2 weeks last year after a storm.
There are homeless (tomato plant stealing) people in the greenbelt and sometimes the greenbelt mysteriously starts to burn. About five years ago a fire came within 200 feet of our house.
sort of like hurricanes only different.
I knew that! What was I thinking!
So far a Julia is concerned, I rather jumped in it thinking cooking is like engineering. So I look on the task of fixing up a hollandaise sauce that my spouse had prepared, but didn’t look right. It had “turned”. So I blithely went on engineering a solution a la JC. (Hmm, Julia Child and Jesus Christ. Same initials…).It worked so next time I fixed the recipe without having it turn.
I was thoroughly hooked. I even went so far years later to cook for a very short time in Cannon Beach!
That wasn’t for me. Cooking commercially, damn, it’s work. Sure it’s work at home too, but so much more fun. And you get to invent new recipes by making mistakes with other recipes. In the restaurant, they call that a disaster!
Total really only two weeks. I’ll be counting on you and FDL to let me know if we can survive in D.C.
Dang, Suz . . . Dan Doin Julia was a classic, and Julia doin runny French Omlette’s was too.
Ya got me in BOTH my most tender spots, teh funny and teh stummy.
I’m NOT a fan of runny french omlette’s though . . . . crappy sissy runny stuff without flavors.
Gimme a French Soufflee, though, and I’m DOWN with that and DON’T egg me on! *G*
H/T Punaise.
dang mary mac – but yes, these fires are a good reminder to stock up those emergency supplies.
just in case.
Ewe stil up? Howsas the retina?
wow – i didn’t know that about you dood. iirc larue used to cook professionally.
me – i’m a professional eater – i pay to eat the food cooked by professionals :)
I love that skit, haven’t seen it for ages. Also have fond memories of the Galloping Gourmet, my mom and I liked to watch him.
hey larue – was just speaking of you…
hey margot – ohmystars i used to watch him when i was a kid
“Bring me my Sabitier’s and a snifter of Brandy, damn it!”
Gareth, on CHEF, long ago from PBS and the Brits.
My all time fave foodie show, ever.
Very short time, Suzanne. One weekend! After finishing up the first evening, around midnight, I couldn’t go to sleep so I went down to the tavern and started downing beer. Uh, oh! Not good!
G’by cooking. Back to what I could really do.
But I still like to cook, and refine the methods. There really isn’t much difference between engineering and cooking after all.
Food! Food! Food!
I love food.
Food! Food! Food!
I love food.
Food! Food! Food!
I love food.
Food! Food! Food!
I love food.
Food! Food! Food!
I love food.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (making a run at breaking the margins)mmmn]
Damn, didn’t see that bracket.
How about a poem entitled The Tomatoe Stealin’ Homeless. ‘Cause, really, as you said, who could blame them?
Ah, so you are a feline!
Jacques Pepin and Julia had a show together that we loved. They had same recipes with different techniques. We did the boning of the turkey and stuffed with bread and pistachios! Loved it!
I still have my first Sabatier knife. I love it!
They come back at night and pick the cherry tomatoes that are planted in the ground. I have thought of putting some kind of trip string that triggers a light but perhaps free tomatoes are just what they need.
PS This is not a poem. :}
You comma my house you donna pay . . . we feed ya . . *G*
And yeah, cookin for a livin is brutal, ugly, hard work and for the young and cheap.
The GOOD LIFE the programs show is fulla shit.
*G*
Oh, fuck.
My folks are up in Grass Valley (Alta Sierra). Guess I’d better get on the phone tomorrow…
FWDiva
Yep! *G*
Maybe you should plant money trees!
I’m heading off to a cup of tea and a book. Start my new job at the gym in the morning.
Oh, I loved CHEF.
Only ever saw a few episodes. Wish my local station would pick it up again. Loved the one with the cooking competition in France…and he decides to use all English ingredients, including wine…
It’s a serious profession!
FWDiva
For years I watched every cooking show on Oregon Public Broadcasting. One of my favorites was America’s Test Kitchen. The recipes so-so, but they helped me clean up my techniques.
Another was a Japanese cook. He showed how to open and clean peppers in one stroke (Actually, 3. You have to cut off the ends first). I delight in showing off in a stranger’s kitchen with that!
Girl, you and me need to have a serious talk about food.
And diet.
And fun.
And music.
Please tell hubby I think fondly of him and you . . . .
I’m goin festin Thurs-Mon . . . . I’ll be pickin my self silly.
I think of yer old man and his music often . . .
He’d be smilin to see me pick now, compared to then. *G*
Agreed! Love Test Kitchen.
I am hungry. I am on a diet. Poor me.
sometimes I cheat on the diet. I fool around with ice creammmmmmmmmmmmmm]
Now you’re singin’ my song!
FWDiva
Good evening everyone =)
Had some Gelato today. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
mmmmm
a couple of weeks ago a friend had me over for supper and she fixed Salade Nicoise from Julia & Jacques “Cooking at Home,” the companion cookbook to that series. YUMMMM doesn’t do it justice. “Died and gone to heaven” is more like it.
*G*
I’ve only one, left, a worn 12″.
Had more, but stolen long ago out of my car on a pub crawl after work with my knife bag in the back.
Junkies in Burlingame, CA, go figger, in ‘74.

justin wilson’s cajun cooking show
i used to watch the victory garden for the recipe at the end of the show
PS I have never, ever, ever watched a cooking show. Not once.
Where are you playing?
hey annb
You are so naughty. You broke the margins! oooooooooooo…
OMFG. Don’t tell me we’ve been cheating with the same rich bastid …
Dang! It’s fixed!

“Stilton Blue Cheese. The PERFECT mix of cow and bug!”
*G*
Gareth was using black market English Cheese not legal to sell.
*G*
Sorry about that.
Guess ya gotta plant zucchini next year! No tomatoes less’n ya take the zukes too!
Or plant extra starts out in the greenbelt?
FWDiva
Ron is the best cook I know. Better than my mom who can make the best creole food evah.
Ron makes his own tofu, bread, pickles, sauerkraut, pasta, ketchup, etc. And he makes really good curry.
He is an experimenter. Most of the time the food is devine. But when it is not-yuk!
Well, two people at least saw it!
I didn’t think it would break the margins.
Neither. Just not my cup of tea hee. I am a pretty good cook, tho.
I love, love that cookbook. My favorite is the Boeuf Bourguignon. Did I spell this correctly?
i swear back in the haloscan days, folks would break the margins or leave open tags on purpose
those zigs…..
I had zucchini but the deer ate it. I got one really good watermelon. The deer ate the blossoms so not fruit.
retina’s behavin’ and waiting patiently for laser repair tomorrow. I’m still up ‘cuz i’m not gonna sleep well no how no way because i have to sleep nearly sitting up. blerggitty blerg.
Mary, festing. Camp Pickin, not on stage.
Here!
David Lebovitz keeps me green eyed. The foodie life in Paris. He did a great piece on markets a few months back, but every time he reorganizes his blog I get lost.
if ya gotta be upright might as well be online ndfg
this an outpatient or inpatient procedure? will ya have someone let us know how you are doing please?
hey sunny
Today we saw a beautiful coyote. It must have been young because it wasn’t all mange ridden. The dogs were smart enough not to see it. It stared right at us for about 30 seconds.
We are all really much closer to wildness than we realize.
One of my favorites is Beef cooked in Beer. It’s in JC’s book. It’s the dish that got me invited to cook at the beach. But when I got there, I was doing Chicken Kiev. I struggled with it but only lost one serving, which I promptly ate.
Ah, well….
Love you and hubby, but anyone who makes ketchup . . .
That’s just not kewl . . . . ;-)
For god’s sake, it’s KETCHUP!!!!
NO ONE uses ketchup.
And if they do, I disdain them.
Harumph.
*G*
i dunno … i google things for the spelling LOL. I studied French in colllege. Loved it but never have i studied so hard for such poor grades. I just don’t “get” other languages. The instructor said i had the best pronunciation in the class. I could understand what i read. But i couldn’t turn around and transpose my english thoughts into french. sigh. mebbe i’ll take it up again
whenif i can retire some day.I tell you though, my friend’s meal was so delish that i’m going to buy that cookbook.
Cool. Maybe you will see Pete.
I will look — thanks Sunny!
I feel a little sea sick.
Awww, maaaaan! Between deer and undocumented neighbors, you’ve got an uphill battle.
FWDiva
What a food snob!
Ahh what the phook, lang with the whackaloon left, talk about food, and such while yer up.
Best to ya ma’am . . . I’m 20/600, 56, and REALLY hopin I don’t get retina crap.
Be well gal . . . and best wishes to ya.
i’ll shoot you an email when i get home – it’s an in office procedure which is a wonderful thing in my book. I am just hoping that i can put my body horizontal afterward. I do not do vertical sleeping well. :tantrum:

thanks hon (((ndfg)))
but you professionals behind the curtain handled it so well! *passes back a bucket of fresh raspberries*
Besides, it’s Catsup, not ketchup.
Yep, more n likely, hanging out with Dale And Marilyn . . .
I need to spend more time around them . . . good music, indeed.
And I have never see anybody or anything in my yard. Not one time. Except for the turkeys. They are just leaving little presents for my dogs. That is what the dogs think.
It is all in the training.
I studied, and studied French. Today, my co-workers bring me their bills to read about payments. I tell them, heck,I can’t read busines French!
Yeah, what’s yer point? *G*
I don’t even use ketchup in bbq sauces I make.
I spent the time, bled the blood, and killed myself in the biz to do and say things my way.
Wanna talk food? I’ll likely offend ya a thousand ways . . *G*
Ah, been up since 5:30 AM. I’s now 11 PM
Night all. I enjoyed reading and responding.
And you got Sabatier’s?
Shame, shame, shame . . .
;-)
Geebuz, another revisionisst.
;-)
Night, Bucky
FWDiva
Not really! Wasn’t offended, just pulling chains.
Again, nite all!
g’nite starbuck – looking forward to our next cup
Chain pulled, reaction offered!! *G*
Cook from scratch!

Hey suz!
i wonder what this week will bring… when do the congresscritters return to dc? is that after labor day?
Hey now, talking about food and bluegrass? Two of my favorite things.
Used to go to the Warrenton/Culpepper Festival in VA years back, always the best picking in teh parking lot at night. John Hartford was my absolute favorite; John Prine, Steve Goodman, Doug Kershaw, Brian Bowers – man those were the days!
I loved watching Yan Can Cook – Yan can cook, and you can, too! I never actually made any of the dishes but he was very entertaining.
hey mommybrain – yan can cook – dang it, i could not think of his name! thanks
natalie dupree – southern cooking was another show i loved to watch
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you John Hartford in his genuine old fashioned steam powered aereoplane – with Vassar Clements and Tony Rice. Folks, bluegrass doesn’t get much better or more original than John.
evening, suz
yes maam. Hi Suz
hey ppd – that fire near salinas putting you at risk?
hey emerson
He was an actual steamboat pilot, too.
oh that is sweet mommybrain
Larue, you have brought back some fine memories tonight, my thanks to you.
Mah DAWG those are heroes!!! *G*
Dang!! *G*
Saw him do that song many times on the Smothers Brothers show. Like the way he dances with it.
Yan is always a delight, google up Ming Tsai . . . trust me! *G*
i used to watch ming on kqed in the bay area. he’s good
I’ve GOT a set or two, two DVD’s worth, of American Music Shop.
With those shows where Hartford Hosted. IBMA Awards Shows were incredible.
And yeah, Steam Powered, and John Hartford (with ALL them katz) was incredible.
Don’t GET me started with Charlie Waller, Country Gent’s, John Duffey, St. Mike and Seldom Scene.
*G*
MIng Tsai and Rick Bayless are two of my fav’s.
I read and have Tony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential”, and he’s insane in that book.
I don’t have cable, so I’ve not seen HIS shows, I hear he’s great. *G*
Hey, so did mr Ming have a restaurant of the same name?
FWDiva
Got fest prep to do, tomorrow, I’m outta here.
Bless and loves ya Suz, thanks for all ya do.
Nite Pups, grassers and all! *wave* *G*
“I’d rather be, in some dark holler . .”
*G*
OH yeah. Back east coast.
The Gloria Fire is south east of us, and mostly under control. It’s much worse in So. Cal.
g’nite larue
been a bad august in ca
First time I ever saw Tom Waits he was opening for the Gents at the Cellar Door in DeeCee. All these hardcore bluegrass fans were calling for Waits encore after encore, they didn’t want to let him leave the stage. The Gents were gents about the whole thing.
Oh, OK.
I’m from the Bay Area. Must’ve been a different Ming’s.
Have fun festin’
FWDiva
John Hartford! Have some photos of him from old Jamboree in the Hills around here, many years ago.
how forking kewl
One of the first records i ever bought was by The Greenbriar Boys. Kidz in college thought i was crazy to listen to anything besides country joe, airplane, etc. I’ve loved Bluegrass and Old-timey since i was a kid, thanks to my parents’ eclectic music taste.
We like dis guy in Napa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEkTMs5UV-s
I need to counter the influence of my LedZep-lovin’ husband on my boy’s musical tastes. What better way than to introduce him to bluegrass?
i got my first album with my first record player for christmas when i was in 5th grade. meet the beatles.
i’ve seen him on food network. very easy going approach to food
Oh, emerson, that was cruel. Now I’m starving and it’a midnite! Yum, I love those little lambie chops.
Favorite dish in the Napa Valley is Coq Au Vin at Bistro Jeanty in Yountville. Under $20 and delicious.
i remember when that pbs show with master chefs (dayam i wish i could rememer its name) first aired – glued to the tv watching real live restaurant chefs give away their secrets in their kitchens. loved that show. it was not the julia child master chefs – it was before that. different restaurant chefs each week with a woman’s voiceover narration
I know, right? They just melt in your mouth. I’ll have to settle for half a turkey sandwich. *g*
the wine train. did it the first year it was operational. yummy yummy
Lydia on PBS makes really solid Italian fare. (and I’m half Italian!)
Good night, all. My eyelids won’t stay up.
Better week for all coming up…
g’nite mommybrain
I’m with you. French fries, etc are just heinz delivery vehicles.
We used to always take guests on the Wine Train when they came to the Valley. For milestone birthdays, we rent a limo and hit 4-5 wineries after lunch at a nice place. That’s really fun and safer for driving.
all my fav cooking shows were on pbs – including lydia.
now there is the food network …
nite mommybrain.
I agree with you there. And hash browns are an excuse to eat A1 sauce.
for some reason, I don’t get that network on my cable. I think I’m on some outdated package.
i don’t have discovery science channel up here so i had to find a substitution – found the food network comes on the basic cable provided by my landlord.
hash browns need catsup. as do pork chops.
I’m actually looking at switching from Directv to Dish. Dish is much cheaper and has the same type packages, but I’ve heard their service goes out alot and they’re not prompt about fixing it. Need to do more research.
Really hate the idea of giving Murdoch $$ every month. If Dish had a NFL package, I would have switched by now.
i’m off to raid the fridge. thank you for the lively conversations tonight.
g’nite everyone.
i’m glad to be out from under the comcast thumb – charter cable up here
*poof*
Hmmm. Gotta try that. Heinz 57 is high on the list here. I’m not above pouring that stuff on rice when nobody’s looking.
