When I spoke with Trent Franks (R-AZ2) last month (at about the 3:30 mark in the video at right), his words were as clear as a bell: he had looked into the birther issue and found nothing there.
I guess going home changes a person.
According to the Politico, citing the Mohave Daily News, Trent Franks now believes there isn’t enough evidence in the public domain to prove Barack Obama was born in the United States.
Congressman Franks’ press secretary, Bethany Haley, got in touch with Glenn Thrush of the Politico and released a statement. Franks still believes Obama was born in the United States; he just cannot figure out why the President won’t put all the speculation to rest by releasing his long-form birth certificate. (You know, the one verified by Fact-Check.org, verified and then reverified by Hawaiin officials, and backed up by contemporaneous newspaper reports.)
Says Bethany:
To clarify — the Congressman’s comments at Saturday’s Mohave County town hall were misrepresented in the original report that you quoted. . . .
[I]t’s ridiculous for the President of the United States, who ran on a platform of transparency and accountability, to dismiss so glibly the concerns of literally millions of Americans, and allow such a ridiculous debate to continue when it could so easily be settled once and for all. It should not be too much to ask for the leader of the free world to allay the concerns of a large number of the people he represents by producing his long-form birth certificate, which is the definitive, inarguable way that he can put people’s concerns about his national identity to rest for good.
[emphasis added]
Look, I’ve come to like Trent Franks, he seemed honest and straightforward–and, dare I say, likable–when I first met him last month, but this backtrack puts all of that in doubt. By Rep. Franks’ new logic, I could raise all kinds of questions about him–all kinds. I’m sure people have had their concerns–and without definitive and inarguable proof to the contrary, why, it would be irresponsible not to speculate. . . .

I wonder if he has a copy of his own long form birth certificate. I know I don’t.
From the wiki:
seems like a real pip.
I was looking through some papers last night and ran across my “Certificate Of Live Birth” (certified copy) from the state of Kentucky. The birthers would go crazy about me as I was born in June and the actual certificate was not filed with the state until November.
I have no idea if Kentucky even has a “long form.”
Bottom line: The birthers are idiots.
Oy vey.
I have no idea what the “long form” is but I don’t think they had one of those when I was born. My being older than dirt might have something to do with it.
Mah dear, you give them waaaay too much credit. Idiots, at least, are loosely defined within the IQ scale for humans. These people have IQs about 3 below plant life.
Just another whackadoodle trying to muddy the waters. The sad thing is that so many have joined his cult of whackiness and distraction/disruption. Makes me weary…..and embarrassed for my society.
My original bc was the old negative type, black background, white print.
Hmmm, black background. Now that would be verry suspect to the fear-mongers. /s
Hey, I got one of those, too. Strange looking.
The first copy I had was like that. I gave it to the AF and they never gave it back so I had to get another copy.
I had to give mine up for a passport. Shoulda requested a modern copy and kept the old one. My bad.
The original “photo copy.”
no trent ..what’s ridiculous is that you morons refuse to accept the clear evidence on the record and dispute the words of the state officials involved as well as all authorities who have examined the document in question and declared it sufficient .. that’s what ridiculous .. i.e. “worthy of ridicule”
flippin’ nitwit nuts ..
Wingnuttery: you’re soaking in it.
Mike, you hit the most important part about Trent Franks’ backtrack, that he’s been home among the loonies who accost him about the birth certificate every day.
there is always a chain of why …..
first AZ refuses to pay their legislators just over $22,000 then you do not draw the best & brightest.
Since the pay is so low they get a lot of builders and people associated with the charter school industry. So there are a lot of bills and passed legislation to fund this industry.
Franks district is in the south of AZ where a lot of the wackadoodles are, the minutemen, birthers, deathers and even though a high number of Vets fighting against SOCIALIZED MEDICINE and Medicare in health care reform.
But then there’s states like New Hampshire that pay only $100 per year yet have some level of sanity in their state lege
You like him Mike? What the hell is there to like from these wingnut racist basturds !
My neo-con twin brother just called to make sure I watch 5 nights of Glenn Beck explaining the death panels and how they are aimed at VA patients……for when they should end it all. I despair!
my Franco-American son (dual citizenship, born in Paris) clearly has no future in U.S. politics.
Another distraction from health care reform.
The real birther story began with Palin. Check the video out and judge for yourself.

Yeah, but damn, at least he has a someplace to go when the place begins to implode!
begins to implode? :~)
Just trying to make myself feel safer……wearing myself out holding up the walls!
Well, this is disappointing, to put it mildly. Wonder what (or who) got into Rep. Franks?
You mean it would be irresponsible not to say that he and Rush Limbaugh go on trips together to the Dominican Republic, a prime locale for underage sex tourism, and it’s not to pick up a good tan? Even though we have no evidence that Franks did so? (Whereas Rush Limbaugh really is known both for his fondness of the Dominican Republic and Viagra.)
I just want to be clear here.
Obama has had a passport since he was a little kid (they lived in Indonesia for a while). Are the birthers suggesting that Obama’s mom forged his birth certificate back then in order to get the U.S. passport? OMG! Another conspiracy! Who forged the birth certificate?? Did they pay off someone in the state department to issue the passport?
Obama has voted in the past. Did he forge his voter registration by saying falsely that he was a citizen? Good grief these people are idiots.
They’re racists. Seriously.
It’s all part and parcel of not wanting to admit that a BLACK MAN won a presidential election fair and square.
The birther issue is one of the Republicans’ big picture, big agenda items. Franks betrayed his party with his sidewalk diatribe. He had to get back in line on orders from on high within the Republican Party. The “questionable” citizenship of Barack Obama is one of the Republicans’ key issues.
The R Party must divide the electorate. They must keep us quarrelling amongst ourselves, while they rob us blind. They’ve got nothing for the common man in the way beneficial policy. They’ve got the birther thing “abortion on demand” racism and “socialism”.
Its all crap, of course. But there are lots of guys on tv and radio to back them up.
That one congressman who called Mike Stark a scumbag was projecting.
These Republicans are scumbags. Unfortunately, so are half of the Democrats.
In the spring I drove from Dallas to Idaho Falls through Colorado. I chose the more direct routes that would take me through small towns, rather than the major freeways. Usually I could only receive a few radio stations.
The choices almost always were between either right wing talk radio programs or conservative christian political sermons. Only when I was near Denver, was a single progressive talk radio program accessible.
To give you an example of the available programming:
1)Rush limbaugh, and in his words, why should he consider another viewpoint when he was the expert on every subject?
2) Shawn Hannity arguing the position of why cops should be able to break the heads of so-called “thugs” during an arrest.
3). A christian authoritarian sermon explaining why a “christian”, although he was wrong, was instantly transformed into right because he put on Christ’s “Cloak of Righteousness”. Even acts of murder were okay, because God was on his side.
This was very disconcerting, as I pondered the possible extent of the indoctrination of the people that lived in these isolated areas. If issues are unfairly and dishonestly represented you have disseminated propaganda. The results of which is effectively brainwashing.
In the nine years since I last visited my father, the shift from conservative to radical is profound;
Authoritarianism determines truth. Alternative views or facts are preemptively denounced before consideration or research, if they threaten the narrative or the ideology. Even to the degree that support of a particular side of an issue is against his own best interests.
Not only only are opposing viewpoints intolerable, so are those that hold them.
The result is of disagreement is predictable: ad hominem attacks, labeling, killing the messenger, and scapegoating.
Although my father is intelligent, he has lost the ability to discern and think critically. As a truck driver, he listens to this form of talk radio all day long, 5 days of the week, every week. My step mother, a follower, merely adopts all the viewpoints of my father. Neither one of them get their news from the internet.
It would not surprise me at all to see either one of them break out in a fascist salute while working themselves up into a lather during the nightly Fox indoctrination series programming. Real news has been replaced with punditry, and he has absorbed it all very well.
What will our nation become if our citizens cannot weigh more than one side of an issue, especially as our education system further deteriorates?
Understanding history is also crucial if the past is not to be repeated.
Critical thinking, civil discourse and debate are skills that must be taught. It is more crucial than ever that good examples of discourse be set in the public media or it ripples down through society.
There is no doubt in my mind that small town midwesterners are being systematically groomed to become an ignorant and violent mob. Our civilization is crumbling.
