On the other hand, one shouldn’t work too hard to falsely sing their praises.
America’s greatest self-proclaimed bipartisan managed to take a break from tut-tutting those liberal sourpusses who favor unions, clean air and health care to type out a eulogy to Bob Novak. It failed to note little things like his role in outing a CIA-operative to serve a petty political grudge or in the case of Robert Hanssen relying upon an actual traitor for the same purpose. But I guess that’s what we filthy bloggers are for (though to his credit in the Post, Howard Kurtz did mention some of this).
The self-mocking parody of himself that Bob created as the Prince, a grumpy right-winger, was sometimes taken more seriously by his audience than he intended. Bob was pugnacious, when challenged, but his instinct was to help his friends whenever they needed it.
Indeed, and I wonder how often that "help" made its way into his columns, hell when did it not?
But how could ‘Mr. Bipartisan’ pass up this little salute to Novak and his long-time collaborator Roland Evans; observe closely the "bipartisan" hymn via the Dean:
Bob’s conservatism was real. He grew up with an anti-FDR father in Joliet, Ill. As his doorstop of a memoir makes clear, he and Evans often argued over the tone of their column. Evans had a liking for liberal Republicans like Nelson Rockefeller. Novak preferred the more rigid right-wingers, like Indiana Sen. Bill Jenner.
It’s bipartisan as long as it involves just Republicans.
Surely, the funereal dirge of the media in our time.

About Firedoglake
It’s bad manners to speak ill of the dead.
The title of this post says you know this.
This speaks badly of you. Not Novak.
what about the dead who had contact with a brewster jennings employee over the past 10 years. fuck you
Yeah, I really ripped him a new one – sort of but not really. How dare I be, y’know, consistent.
Morning, Attaturk
Yeah, how DARE you bring up facts when the man isn’t cold yet? Shame! (/Snark).
My take-away from the Hymn to Bipartisanship paragraph is that he apparently didn’t question his father’s politics enough to refine his own. I used to be like that…got over it as a college undergrad.
That said, I’m sure he leaves behind folks that loved him and will miss him. And I am sorry for their loss. Maybe that’s the forgotten end of the title phrase: speaking ill could make it worse for the grieving. Good thing this post is more of a critique of The Dean’s eulogy than anything else…

Chuck DeVore said “Never in California’s history has a self-funded dilettante ever won any top office, Governor or Senate,”
Oh, so Arnold wasn’t a self funded dilettantes? Who would have guessed?
Exactly.
I’m a liberal byproduct of two conservatives gettin’ busy myself. My FoxNews watching parents were and are at least progressive enough to let me find my own path. It’s not rebellion, it’s being taught to think for myself.
…we just try to avoid talking politics.
Huh! What the fuck does California and Ahnold have to do with Novackula, V. Plame, and dead agents? What?
Let me pick up the fish then, good doctor Turk.
The Prince of Darkness has been cast down to his eternal reward. Surprisingly, he died of brain cancer. Surprisingly, because he claimed he had brain cancer in order to get out of accepting the consequences of a hit-and-run accident. So it may be graven on his tombstone “Novak was proven to have told the truth at least once.”
Speaking of Novak and two other scribes from the Pleistocene when he was young, Broder mourns that “we are not likely to see their likes again.” Sadly, we see their likes again and again. But they are not taken as seriously, or allowed to do as much damage to America and the body politic as that treasonous, malicious, duplicitous scribe.
We are better off without him. America is better off without him. May his eternal soul be shown mercy, because if he gets what he deserves, it’s going to be ugly.
And a further note: intertubes research indicates that there is already a line forming for those wishing to piss on Novaks grave.
I wonder what Broder said when Izzy Stone died?
I wonder what I saidf when MacNamara died? Sheeeet!
At a Barney Frank town hall meeting in Dartmouth, MA, a constituent asks, “Why are you supporting this Nazi policy?”
Frank responds: “On what planet do you spend most of your time?” He then calls her approach “vile, contemptible nonsense.” He closes by saying: “Trying to have a conversation with you would be like arguing with a dining room table.”
TBogg was on that right away with a h/t to Wonkette.
Barney was superb.
Sorry, I just woke up!
No sorry’s needed good sir. the comment he posted from a wonketteer was priceless also!
I also like the bi-partisan nod, as in talking to oneself, but not to the other side. NPR also gave pretty good background on the Plame case.
Plus, why am I up at this hour? But thanks for the company. Good Morning, almost.
So Novakula never outgrew his parents’ politics? Both of my parents were rock-ribbed Republicans. It’s a point of pride that I had managed to turn my mother around before she died. (Well, Kent State probably had as much to do with the scales falling from her eyes as I did…)
Does Attaturk win some sort of bloggy award for having a hand-wringing concern troll as comment #1? I’m off to gaze upon the NYT…
Just because the son of a bitch has finally kicked the bucket there is no reason to be kind to him now. He was a pig, a right wing religious nut fuck that lied through his teeth and spouted evil at every turn. Unfortunately I was on antibiotics when he croaked so I will have to wait a few days before I can have a toddy and figuratively piss on his grave.
There that feels better.
Thanks Raven for sharing that story.
I want Frank as the next Senator from Mass (funny, tells the truth, and
doesn’t cowtow/kowtow to Repubs)
A proper good morning to you, pups. It’s Dowd and Egan today. The Moustache of Wisdom is off. MoDo, in “Lust, American Style,” says there’s no such thing as a private affair anymore. We live in a transparent era atwitter with indecent exposure. Mr. Egan gets all stoopid in “Prairie Health Care Companion.” His brilliant idea is that as the public health care option gets hammered by a campaign of disinformation, the co-op model deserves a fair hearing. Hey, Sparky — you’re supposed to be a fracking journalist. Howzabout trying to put out some, you know, information to counteract the disinformation? I know, I know, it’s a difficult concept to grasp…
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got blueberry pancakes for y’all. I’m going to go and get a second cup of tea and do a light brain lavage to get Egan flushed out. (Maybe I’m being to hard on him, but the concept that we have to consider B simply because everyone is lying about A irked the crap out of me.) Have a great day.
This is a good review of Novak’s last book…
http://www.cjr.org/behind_the_….._novak.php
Maybe Mo wants a job at People Mag….is her article as inane as it sounds?
Quit beatin around the bush.
On the other hand Barney has a lot of seniority in the House whereas in the Senate he would be low person on the totem pole. Other than that I agree with you.
Interesting… I had no idea (or had forgotten) that Novak broke the 18½ minute tape gap story. I still remember the picture of Rose Mary Woods doing a back flip into her trash can trying to “explain” how it happened…
Do you even need to ask?! It’s MoDo.
“Dammit, I’m playing by the rules, why should I pay for these other people”
Morning
joe
My lovely spouse just told me that I will have to drink a whole lot if I am to piss on all the graves dug for these right wing pigs.
Ooops…nice laugh. Thanks
I was a little shaken when I read Modo and lust in the same sentence.
It could be worse. The PLP (Pasty Little Putz) has been known to opine on things romantic. If that ever happens I’ll issue hazmat suits.
But, but, but didn’t he write some beautiful romantic words about his Harvard impotency era?
Broder isn’t deserving of even a paper route. March on Washington September 13 for meaningful healthcare reform. Pass it on.
OT, I just heard that today = birthday of Pres. Clinton, so also = b’day of my X husband. Let me say, with both Leos, that fact ends any faith in horoscope. Yep. ;))
[snort] I believe you’re referring to the classic “chunky Reese Witherspoon” debacle? [guffaw] Warning — link has horrible picture of PLP.
NPR covering the co-op story….
I guess everyone has gotten the blast fax on what to push…
Actually, the PLP seems to think he knows all about teh feminists and how they’ve ruined women’s lives… [spit]
MSM wants to push co-ops as the “bipartisan” option. If anyone wants to know why large swaths of the American public are nothing but infantile marionettes all one has to do is turn on the TV or radio. That includes NPR.
Yikes….exactly like Dr. Laura. It’s too early….
Anyone going to the March on Washington September 13 for real healthcare reform? Medicare for all!
novac exposed a covert asset, that’s treason but this went much further and progressives keep missing it because we are so enamered with joe wilson and his wife
novac exposed brewster jennings as a covert asset as well, this was one of the cia’s great tools, taking much of their resources and budget to be established as a brass plate corporation involved at the highest levels of intel gathering
we don’t know how many other assets were exposed because brewster jennings was however we do know far more then valery
all their lives put at risk, all their family, all their friends.
and all the information that brewster jennings made possible, all layed to waste
other media refused exposing these assets, novak was happy to oblige
I’d call him a maggot but some people like insects and it wouldn’t be right to insult them by comparing novak to them
Oh. I always thought the proscription about speaking ill was superstition.
If his loved ones share his outlook they are unlikely to read fdl.
And if they don’t share his outlook, they won’t be offended—and
probably have more bitter things to say than we.
The NYT has a story about how the Dems may be set to “go it alone” on health care. About damn time…
I wonder what would have happened if we billed novak for what was spent establishing brewster jennings, since we can’t find out how many died because of this traitor
Well, I just like to think of him now as lurking for eternity under the same rock as Joe McCarthy, Westbrook Pegler, and others of that (to use one of his favorite words) ilk.
Not that it exonerates the Prince, but
I thought there was some info hereabouts (on Emptywheel?) that Brewster Jennings’ cover was actually blown a coupla yrs earlier
I saw that. Obama has to ask himself is “bipartisanship” more important than doing what’s right for the American public. The only thing Republicans can contribute is a blind faith in a failed ideology. Changing the tone in Washington will not happen until the current Republican Party is but a memory.
Only speak good of the dead?
Ok (thanks Bette Davis)
Good, he’s dead.
Amen, brother.
Well, doesn’t sound like completely alone…Sect. Kathleen S. has revised her Sunday remark…
That reminds me of a remark I heard from a very crusty elderly lady who owned and operated a hamburger shop near the Stock Yards in Fort Worth. As I went through the line, a young lady working with her said to her, “Did you hear the Jim Whatever died of a heart attack?” Without looking up from the frying patties, the older lady said, “I didn’t even know the sombitch had a heart.”
I thought he’d been dead for years. How was I to know he wasn’t a zombie?
Blob Novack was a reichwing enabler.
He suffered and died from a condition I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, however, I feel no pain at his passing.
He knew he lied. About Valerie Plame and a whole lot of stuff . . . which will eventually come out once he’s in the ground.
And, if I have to listen to Pat Buchanan moaning about what a “great” loss it is to the nation one more time, I think I’m gonna throw up.
Class him in the same category as Lee Atwater (who died of the same disease, btw) and Tony Snowjob and Matt the Drudge, etc. — gone and soon forgotten.
As soon as I heard, I knew Novak was in the 9th circle. Perhaps his next incarnation will be a Mother Terese-like serving the poor.I’m sure he could match her in bitchiness any day!:-)
“Speaking ill of the dead” is the only way to set the record straight.
And Broder would rather DIE than have that happen.
Hi Marion, pups,
Wich explains why he was storming off tv sets when his limited inhuman worldview was challenged and ridiculed. He was an eight year old bully until the very end.
Thanks for the laughs today, pups. Thread ‘o the dead.
This is politics, not a tea party.
Bob Novak helped Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby out the identity of a covert CIA operative.
Wrong thread, sorry
Ah, thank you!
I thought about saying exactly that, but couldn’t find the right words.
You said it so much better than I could!
