Everytime I see you on tv (and why is it that you only seem to appear on MSNBC?), you have such rational responses to all the fanatical nonsense generated by the reichwingers that the MSM keeps recycling — do they EVER have an original thought of their own????

It seems our vaunted fourth estate is too lazy to actually investigate the undue influence of the radical right on the political process . . . or are they too scared? — are they afraid of the bullying repercussions from Rash Limpballz and/or Sean Insannity?

In a reasoned debate, single payer will come out on top

A health care “reform” that protects private insurers and massive profits for the pharmaceutical industry inevitably becomes an ugly game where ordinary people’s interests are pitted against each other. Witness, for example, the proposed cuts to Medicaid and Medicare to fund an initiative that subsidizes the mandated purchase of private insurance with taxpayer dollars. Relatively little is offered to the already insured majority who are told of upcoming belt-tightening.

The near-total exclusion of single payer from the health care debate by our political leaders and the media has contributed to the present state of affairs. Single payer is an expanded and improved Medicare for All (“Medicare 2.0”). Many, perhaps most, Americans have come to believe in the false choice between universal coverage and quality health care.

Our nation needs a meaningful dialogue, including a fair hearing of the views of the 20 million constituents of the Leadership Conference on Guaranteed Health Care (of which Physicians for a National Health Program is a founding member), who advocate for single-payer national health insurance.

It is unnecessary to pit the insured against the uninsured, or those with Medicare and Medicaid against those with private insurance.

Multi-payer, for-profit health insurance adds cost but not value to American health care. Savings of $400 billion a year can be obtained through the conversion to a single-payer system. With the money we are now spending (twice as much per capita as other developed nations), we can provide full service “what you need, when you need it” health care for everyone and control costs going forward.

With the “everybody in, nobody out” approach of a Medicare 2.0 system, we can all get more freedom, choice and security.

Single-payer advocates have been excluded from debate not because our premises or facts are wrong but because special interests, including the private health insurance industry and the big drug companies, have been allowed to define the limits of “politically feasible.”

It was a thing of beauty.

Barney just gave the proper model for a response to this insanity. Then the 75% can return to reasonable dialogue and create a synergy for solutions to the serious issue of health care.

My teenager said, “Thank you Barney Frank for being able to keep the Town Hall on track and confronting the madness. The name calling and lacking in facts of concern regarding the health care debate by uninformed individuals and groups, and watching people simply standing up and spewing trash, gets our country only in one direction — down. The First Amendment does have it’s important place. Manners, maturity, responsibility and respectful dialogue bring solutions.”

My soon-to-be kindergartner said, “Gee some people at these meetings are so rude and mean. They do not understand how to talk with others. Maybe they need to go back to kindergarten and learn some manners. And, their Mommies should give them a time out for being so rude.”

I heard three callers bringing it up on C-SPAN this morning. One person called and mentioned the posibility of violence and eventually a race war because of all the vitriol at the turf hall meetings, especially with people roaming around with guns. Then one of the “automatic rifle at presidential events” supporters called in response and said regarding a race war: “Bring it on”. Then someone named Andrew Napolitano from faucks news came on to discuss his new book “Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom in America” endorsed by Juan Williams, Michael Steele, Glen Beck, Nat Hentof. He was a co-founder of CAP at Princeton (remember this from Alito’s SCOTUS hearing). Book sounds like a huge race bait. This is getting way too scary. WTF?

Here is the math on the public option-
There are exactly 17-19 people, in the whole country, who are holding up heathcare reform. The house of representatives wants it, and has ample numbers to pass it. The presidents says he prefers a public option. Finally, in the senate, by even Kent Conrad’s whip count, 41-43 senators of 60 democrats (over two-thirds) will vote for a public option. By my count, that leaves 17-19 senators standing in the way of passing this thing!
It’s not 100 house members holding up what the majority of democrats want. It’s 17-19 senators. 4 out of 5 bills under consideration contain the public option. The republicans don’t count here, and refuse to participate.
Why not put the whole weight of the arm twisting on the 17-19 senators? We have the majority of democrats in all 3 branches of government in favor of a public option. The progressives, labor unions, the AARP, and 71 percent of democrats in general favor it. Yet, 17-19 people can hold up reform ?
Time to explain it to them in terms they can understand. Fall in line,or lose party financial support, labor will sit on their hands in your next election, and you will face primary opponents.
Give them a bone if they play along. This is politics, as practiced for long as history remembers.

The 17-19 would only need to be exhorted to vote for cloture to stop a Republican filibuster. Only 8-11 would then have to be persuaded to vote for the bill in the Senate, in order to pass it. Barring that, it looks like the 8-11 will be required to pass the measure through the reconcilliation process.
