"I cannot support this bill in the version it is in now," he said. "We can do better. We can make it better."
…
When a questioner, Ray Evans, said he believed the President wants to do too much at once and asked whether Boyd would "be willing to scrap everything" and start over to do pursue reform more incrementally, the congressman responded: "I think that is an excellent idea … we may end up there."
Meanwhile, yet another Blue Dog bites the White House.
In Mississippi, Rep. Gene Taylor (D), another Blue Dog, told an overflow crowd of about 1,000 people that he opposes the public insurance option, according to the Sun Herald in Biloxi.
“The health care bill is projected that even with the changes that are coming out, if they are able to get them out of it, it is costing us maybe $900 billion tax dollars more, $900 billion of new debt,” he said.
I wonder if Taylor, who voted for the Iraq war — as well as a resolution against an exit date — concern trolled Bush about the cost.
Anyway, the White House made Sebelius "clarify" her remarks about the public option this morning, which puts Boyd and Taylor squarely in opposition with the President.

WASHINGTON (AP) — “The U.S. won’t have nearly as much swine flu vaccine ready by mid-October as long predicted — 45 million doses instead of the anticipated 120 million, a federal official said Monday.”
And you want to put these idiots in charge of health care?
Shame on you.
Wants to slow the process down? This started with Teddy Roosevelt as President. I don’t know how it could be any slower. Most in Congress are complete idiots but then they do represent their constituents.
To clarify further:
“It’s not a shortage but a delay, Health and Human Services spokesman Bill Hall said.”
Interesting distinction.
You are right. I don’t want to put private pharmaceutical companies who are getting federal subsidies and liability protection from suit in charge of health care.
Who is proposing putting the government “in charge of health care”? I haven’t seen that bill. And I assume you and your family are opting out of Medicare?
Robert Reich just said there needs to be a March on Washington on this issue and suggests Sunday, September 13 (Grandparents Day). The organizers out there need to take his suggestion and run with it. Progressives need to put pressure on now.
OT: front page of NYTimes: Columist Robert Novak is dead.
“Incremental health care reform” is code for ‘no health care reform at all’. The Yoda Principle holds here: Do (the Public Option) or Do Not. Anything else is fiddling at the edges and we won’t get reform at all.
Excellent point. Thanks for posting, really appreciate it.
This should be proof enough for all those capitalists claiming private industry is the best answer. This proves they can’t when all of those private pharm companies can’t even get close to producing what was required on time.
Damned pharma companies, you are right sir, I also don’t want them or the damned insurance companies in charge of my health care. Outstanding post ! ! ! !

These Libertarian trolls with their lame bullshit are tiresome.
less damage done in print, and on TeeBee
they are in charge ya dumbass
im TURNING OFF MY HAIR DRYER AND CALLING Boyd
anyone care to join me?
Not so sure about “Libertarian” cause that is almost word for word what an avid and long time right wing poster posted on another forum I visit. Too close to be a coincidence, methinks.
The funny thing is they should realize they don’t need to have guys all over the intertubes spreading their talking point for them, they’ve already got the entire main stream media, including all TV and most newspapers, doing it for them.
The whole Panhandle area is conservative. Lot of fundies, military, rednecks, etc.
You don’t think the government could handle health care because private companies can’t meet their expectations?
Let’s scrap the whole bill and start again from Single Payer. That’s a great idea!

I like the September 13th date for a march. It’s the day after that idiot Glen Beck’s stupid 9/12 project march. If we could blanket the mall the way we did during the inauguration, they might take notice!

Some are supposedly being paid by one of the reichwing sites to troll progressive blogs so repetition of talking points is no surprise. Not a lot of original thinkers on that side. Boy, talk about massive fail. As opposed to the reichwingers, who want small government that they can control for the benefit of themselves and their cronies, Libertarians would like a government that only funds the military and law enforcement. Most are supporters of Ron Paul, or Paulistas. This one may not be a Libertarian but a troll is a troll is a troll. (Apologies to Gertrude Stein)
HOW MANY IN CONGRESS BOTH HOUSES…HAVE MEDICARE
AND OR VA BENEFITS? how can we find out?
Boyd – $85,232 from lobbyists and healthcare and industry industry donors, 2009-2010 cycle
Taylor – strangely, only $2,000 from the industry
What’s Taylor’s problem?
feel like Im alone at the prom
Bingo!
Ron Paul is the man.
WTF is it that this dickhead does not understand about it being fully paid for
I’ll take your word for it. I’ve never wanted to get close enough to Ron Paul to actually confirm its gender.
Answer: 121 (96 House, 25 Senate).

Shhh. You’ll vex the trolls.
Things are much less expensive in Ms. :)
I know it’s a waste of time showing them how they are actually proving our point, because logic and reason have no place in their world view.
I on the other hand feel that opinions should provide a framework for our thinking, not be a substitute for it.

Yes, but we (the government) is responsible for seeing the production numbers are reached. Perhaps Obama doesn’t really want to keep up. You know, if we run short just let the older folk go without.
I’ve tried to interact with this “representative” and found him shallow and disingenuous. In true Republican fashion, he is adept at “projection” and casts on his questioners his OWN feelings. At a ‘talk with your rep’ forum late last fall, I asked a question outside the bounds of his canned talking points. For an answer, I was told the issue was “too complicated.” Which leaves me wondering if today’s issues (like that of a year ago) are “too complicated” for this elected servant to comprehend and address.
IOW, when he tells me I’m too ignorant to understand complex matters, I truly feel he is admitting that the issue (whatever it is) is too complicated for HIM to understand. So, in true good-ol’-boy fashion, he follows the path of least resistance, or the one the promises the greatest ROI.
It’s bad enough to be a disgusting traitor to your party (like Boyd), but when you’re not even being paid for it????
It’s ridiculous to say public option health care is “unfair” to the insurance companies. If we’d used that argument with the horse-and-buggy industry, we’d have no cars!
He just wants Steny to give him a backrub.
Wasn’t being in the guard/reserves the draft dodge of choice during Vietnam
It’s not our job, or the job of the gov’t, to see that the insurance companies are profitable. Let them compete just like other businesses.
yup
that is an argument even Sarah Palin, and Joe the not plumber can understand
?!?
Wow, troll thinking is beyond belief. Up is down, black is white and corporate failures are the government’s fault.
But it’s not often you’ll see them admit that “we” is supposed to be “the government.” So maybe we can count that as progress.
I haven’t looked at his Open Secrets page yet, but it is still considered “early” in the 2010 fundraising cycle, so there may still be contributions to be reported (EOM 9/09)
plus, he is probably not considered influential enough (which comm does he serve on ?)to be bringing down Mike Ross levels of cash
oh, and he’s most likely a first string dumbass
wondering now how the fiscally conservative consitutents in his PVI R+2 district would respond if they knew he’d voted $26 Billion to bail out European banks in June (HR 2346)
The $900 billion does not increase the debt. That’s over 10 years, so there’s an estimated increased cost of $90 billion/year, which is fully paid for by savings and/or new taxes. There is no increase in the debt. On the other hand, doing nothing increase the federal budget by the escalation in Medicare/Medicaid etc, costs, and that all goes to the national debt, because there’s at present no other proposal to pay for those increases. So starting over with nothing increases the debt with no end in sight, while moving forward with the concepts on the table doesn’t. Other than that, the Congressman has a firm grasp on the economics.
yeah, back before George W. Bush turned the National Guard into the regular army.
These Congressmen have a great idea. Let’s bag what has been produced behind closed doors and start from scratch. And this time, let’s get the public involved. No baloney of, “Oh, here’s the bill we made for you.”
Let’s have hearings, experts from all sides, and bring the public along. Otherwise, this really is going to come crashing down to a huge defeat and never again be approached for quite some time.
Obama didn’t lead, Pelosi used the back room approach, and Waxman is all over the place.
Start with a fresh sheet. Have hearings on single payer. Have hearings on Medicare for all. Open to them to the public and have them well publicized. Brings in experts to testify in open session. So, it takes a year, we’ve been waiting for 50 years. Why blow it for another 20 trying to rush it? Open hearings will get people on the right side of this.
If you think it has all been discussed to death, you are living in an ivory tower. You and your buddies have discussed it, but as far as the broad public, it has not been discussed in hearings that all could see. Therefore, in their mind, it hasn’t been discussed.
Hey now, that’s a thought. You mean old bone headed geezers like Ron Paul?
Yes, surely Obama doesn’t want a repeat of the 1976 Swine Flu fiasco:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1…..u_outbreak
One death where swine flu was A cause, and some reports I’ve seen say hundreds died from the vaccine. Not to mention the many millions the US Gov paid to those killed or disabled by the vaccine. Plus, flu vaccines have shown to have little to no effect anymore in general, if ever.
Oh, you and your damn logic and facts again! Harumpf.
You can not put the genie back in the bottle: the administration has strongly signaled that the public option is dead and the Blue Dogs are declaring victory.
Seeing the White House try and walk this back is pathetic. If the White House really wanted the public option still on the table they would have called every Blue Dog out there to let them know that they need to be a bit more cautious. But no, they know they have won.
As for the White House, they have managed to piss off the progressives and still have no health care bill.
But I guess those negotiations with Grassley will produce a bill, right?
Let alone a republican vote for one.
Another Blue Dog comes out of duck-and-cover mode and sticks his head over the barricade.

So how much are you being paid to recite these Glenn Beck talking points? I trust you’re reporting all that cash as taxable income, right?
What are you? A Republican troll?
Can Beck afford to pay blog trolls with his sponsorship drying up like a salt flat under a red giant?
During the Prez campaign, a dominate narrative here for a while was that Obama has “lost this thing” and “it’s over.” He was too stupid an naive then as well the story goes…
Not quite sure what he has to accomplish before more Liberals, that hang around blogs at least, start thinking that maybe, just maybe he has a plan. Sure, he’s not going to win them all and will make mistakes, but he’s clearly signaled he wants healthcare to be his defining issue, and since all this nonsense from Blew Dogs, Repubs, racists, lobbyists, and so on was quite predictable, I’m thinking Obama’s got something going. Isn’t this reasonable to conclude, or am I simply so enamored with his ability to read teleprompters?
You left my rep off – Jackie Speier – she is one of the 60 who signed the letter.
Is she a Blue Dog? That is a list of Blue Dogs. The ones crossed off are the ones we know through act or public statement are not going to vote for the public option.
The Blue Dog letter is pretty vague. Allows them a lot of tail-wagging room.
Well, you and I both seem to really go for those teleprompter skills.
Oh, sorry. She is NOT a BD.
I would submit that it’s not too early to start targeting the “blue dogs” who have done so much damage to this process. These ass-wads need to be made to understand that there’s a price to pay for acting like Republicans. Well-organized challenges in the 2010 primaries is a good place to begin. It’s the only thing that will get their attention.
Hey Mike Ross: All bets are off…
Beck can’t, but the machine that runs him certainly can.
When a questioner, Ray Evans, said he believed the President wants to do too much at once and asked whether Boyd would “be willing to scrap everything” and start over to do pursue reform more incrementally, the congressman responded: “I think that is an excellent idea … we may end up there.”
If these representatives had been listening (as I have through many c-span hearings) they wouldn’t need to “start over.” They have had more than ample time to investigate, listen, and decide. Being willing to scrap everything and start over leaves us where???? 1993??? This is nothing more than a delaying tactic. If they admitted that they have had plenty of time to get up to speed . . . they would also have to admit that they are too d**n lazy or too incompetent or too greedy to do the job taxpayers pay them to do! Why not have a medicare-for-all “opt in” program. The infrastructure is already in place, and if the for-profit insurers can’t compete–isn’t that what the real FREE MARKET is all about?
Special Book Salon a couple of flights upstairs with Howard Dean’s Prescription for Real Health Care Reform hosted by Jason Rosenbaum
Yes, that’s been a funny one. Obama supporters are sheeple who are hypmotized by his amazing speechmaking abilities, but apparently he’s so bad a making speeches he needs a teleprompter to do anything. Obama-haters are a confused lot.
I’m an open minded Dem who’s not interested in socialism.
Let’s bow our heards and pray:
“That government is best which governs least. Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.”
Thomas Paine
Yes, it really is just that simple.
We’ll have small government again when we have small corporations, small media, small churches…when we go back to the institutions that existed in Thomas Paine’s day. Right now, government healthcare or government healthcare insurance or government regulation of healthcare is a necessary evil because the status quo of private insurance is an intolerable evil.
It should would nice, bonkers. But couldn’t you say that about everything?
For instance, Obama has decided to continue indefinite detentions. But he has a “plan”.
Obama has decided continue two wars and increase troop levels massively in Afghanistan . . . but he has a “plan”. etc. etc.
The problem is what is this “plan”? And how does it justify Obama throwing out his campaign promises? I don’t see it. I’m still waiting for “transparency” and “justice” and “change”. You don’t need a “plan” to do those things, only the will.
My comment was about the Healthcare debate, and it seems quite fair and reasonable to me to assume Obama anticipated most of this reaction to the healthcare proposals, and will be adjusting accordingly now that everyone’s putting their cards on the table.
This is such a common refrain in the Liberal blogs it’s become laughable. So many historic “changes” have already happened this year, that if you don’t know about them, you should add more information sources into your mix, or you’re willfully ignoring them to continue with this inaccurate and inane storyline. Try here for starters:
http://www.dailykos.com/commen…..7/312#c312
Yes, lots of stuff still to work on, and being the radical Liberal that I am, Obama will never do as much as I’d like to see, but overall it’s amazing how much he’s turned the ship around so far, and I’m thrilled about the direction he’s steering it in.
None of this matters anyway, since real change comes from people getting organized and active, not from one person in government. Getting people active and excited around certain issues is what I’ve been working on, and this incessant and unfair Obama-bashing around much of the Liberal blogs works against our efforts. It lowers morale. I’ve been getting comments to this effect at some of our planning meetings, and we have to spend most of the time just getting some of the people excited enough again to go knock on doors or attend meetings. This is why having the balance WAY off to the “holding feet to fire” side has been annoying me.
For the first time in my adult life we have a President who is receptive and supportive to our organizing efforts. It’s a golden opportunity for movement on so many issues over the next few years, so let’s get to work.
I’m glad you have the President of your dreams — I just wanted someone who would not compete with Harry Reid for “first to surrender”.
As for your DK reference: give me a break. If the sun rises in the East tomorrow will you credit Obama?
I don’t look at the presidency as a spot on American Idol. Your excitement is nice during the campaign, but there is that little thing called governing.
I just want health care reform, or an end to Bush’s wars, or more money going to Americans and less to Wall Street, or an end to expanding executive privilege, or signing statements, or any of the many issues Obama ran on (I guess I missed that campaign speech about the White House helicopters).
You got your guy and you remain a fan. But Obama lost one vote for his next election.
How Hillary Clinton-ish of you. Nice way to avoid those pesky facts that disrupt your neat and tidy storyline you cling to.
Considering I’ve organized for single-payer for many years, want to abolish the stock market/Wall St all together, not just end the Repub Invasions in the Middle East, but start killing terrorism with kindness by funding humanitarian aid throughout the world at levels never dreamed of, and want to increase taxes by about 10% on the upper 2% of wage-earners, and 2-3% at every other level to get the country solid and safe financially, I’d hardly say Obama is “the President of my dreams.”
He is the best we’ve had in my lifetime though, and that’s progress. See, progress is the key, and by any honest estimation over the last year, America has made progress on an incredible amount of levels.
You and many others in the Liberal blogs suggest much more could be done by now, and in cases that may be true, but in totality the Change Obama has brought with him is fantastic in my opinion. Off to a great start and is saying all the correct things about what to do next.
History is filled with leaders and organizers that fought for issues their entire lives, and often they never saw the Change in their lifetimes, but the work they did set the stage for the next generation of organizers and leaders. The common thread with all these heroes is that they never gave up. I pointed out some of the on-the-ground effects of this constant emphasis on the negative, and virtually no highlighting of the positives that have happened the last 7 months. It hurts the various movements as a whole by demoralizing potential activists at precisely the time we need to be growing our ranks.
This isn’t about individuals like you or me or Obama. It’s about organizing millions, and motivation is crucial. There’s a lot to be motivated about right now.
I can’t argue with you because the answer to everything is Obama knows all.
And where are these “pesky facts” to which you refer? Is it that Obama supports a public option? or that it is not essential? or that it is the only way to create competition for insurance companies? or that it is only a small part of reform? Because he has stated these positions all within the last six weeks.
As for calling me “Clinton-ish” — well, now you are acting 12. How old are you exactly because you don’t seem to respond well to criticism?
Obama was my Senator before my President and I guarantee you I have voted more times for him than you ever have.
You can be a fan of Obama all you want. But this debate is about America. I do not question your love of Obama and your undying worship of the man. I just question your politics. And with the administration blowing health care reform I think it is time to put the pressure on this White House.
Since you hate liberal blogs so much I really wonder why you post here. Aren’t there Blue Dog blogs?
This obviously isn’t an honest debate on your part, since I consistently say Obama is not my ideal candidate and offer nuance as to why, yet you continue with the condescension, so I’ll quit wasting your time and mine.
Hopefully some readers found some value in what I added, just as I do from many who comment here, so onward and upward.
