Oh, I am so positive this is going to end well. Via TPM:
About 12 people were carrying guns, including at least one semi-automatic assault rifle, outside a building where President Obama was speaking today.
…
The man spotted carrying the assault rifle and a pistol, who gave his name only as "Chris", was asked why he was armed. "Because I can do it," he said. "In Arizona, I still have some freedoms." . . . .Two police officers kept close by. Carrying guns, including the AR-15 assault rifle, is legal under Arizona law.
"If we need to intervene, we will intervene at that time," said Detective J. Oliver.
Once again we see how irony deficiency maims the conservative’s ability to reason: those most terrified of The Negro Socialist Non-Citizen Grandmother-Killing President taking away their assault weaponry [roll eyes here] are free who to openly carry them at Obama events without fear of reprisal.
Could you even begin to imagine that sort of apparently lackadaisical approach during Bush’s Orwellian tenure? Contemplate what would have happened to audience members had they shown up at one of Bush’s "socha scurty" town halls packing heat. People wearing even vaguely anti-Bush t-shirts were summarily ejected from his little Potemkin village affairs and those whose cars brandished "liberal" bumper stickers were no doubt assigned to some DHS anti-American no-fly list. Anyone with a firearm at a Bush event would have found himself wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackles faster than you could say "Dick Cheney’s man-sized safe."
And does anyone remember the $40 million inaugural celebration four years ago? Because I certainly do:
Then everybody will get back on the buses for a trip to the National Mall, where they will spend most of the day in heavily guarded warming tents. Participants have been warned that they will not be allowed to leave the tents except to go to portable toilets accompanied by a security escort.
Other instructions given performers include a warning not to look directly at Bush while passing the presidential reviewing stand, not to look to either side and not to make any sudden movements.
And then there were Bush’s little motorcade junkets around the country and abroad, which involved security plans so costly, detailed and outlandish that even the Pope would be embarrassed:
Residents in the city center are forbidden to go out onto their balconies during Bush’s visit and some 1,200 Mainz residents who live near the palace where Bush and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder are to meet will only be allowed to enter their apartments after having undergone security checks. Strategically important balconies, roofs and windows will be manned by American snipers.
So yes, while Obama has adopted certain of Bush’s unappealing traits, the small "d" democratic manner in which his town halls are run is refreshing, if not a little worrisome. Let us fervently hope that these martial displays by the Teabaggers and their kooky parasites end in a whimper, not a bang.

Look out! I’m commenting on this thread while packing heat!
Dude. You should be holstering a Beretta with that pink Ralph Lauren polo shirt!
I think maybe the Secret Service needs to get a little more pro-active here. These asshats are escalating this right before our eyes. I witnessed too many assassinations of national figures, including one president, in my youth. I do not want to go through that again.
But he was only carrying so those mean union thugs wouldn’t kick the crap outta him.
The .41 magnum is safely ensconced in the closet, unloaded, broken down, with the trigger lock on and it will stay there, unless one of these whackjobs crosses the line.
Yes. That AR-15 makes your ass look really fat.
Take a cold shower.
Not to mention your head.
What would Jesus carry?
A cross and the multitudinous sins of these cretins.
Pastordan on Jane’s thread early this morning was scared because Cokie making sense I wonder if Cokie got a heads up about an organized move to bring more people with guns to TownHall rallies?
Such a bonehead move might have prompted a survival instinct reaction from Cokie to distance her self from the GOP.
i thought it was a PRO Obama blackguy packing the AR 15?
No kidding.
“Do these wretches and unwashed souls and prostitutes make my ass look fat?”
Yeah well I’m thinking about getting an attack goat! Top that:)
I do like the “we’ll intervene when and if we need to intervene” answer from the cops.
Define “intervene”.
Agreed just what are the Secret Service and FBI waiting for?
Oh. Maybe the rifle wasn’t responsible. It was the head shoved up his ass that made it look really fat. And I don’t mean phat.
Three words: weaponized athlete’s foot.
It’s a little late for her to be worrying about that, isn’t it?
Cokie Roberts making sense?
What are the other three signs of impending doom?
How would MSM react if 100 Negro persons showed up at a rally, armed to the teeth? That would be scary, and a cause for calling out the National Guard and not an expression of the second amendment I am guessing
That’s what I read, too. Don’t remember where.

btw, how do we find diary entries now? I created one for the first time and I can’t find it again off the front page. In fact, there doesn’t seem to a link to a full list of diaries at all anymore.
I don’t care who you’re for or agin’.
There is no reason to be carrying loaded firearms into a place loaded to the rafters with local cops, State cops and USSS agents. Period. End of sentence.
Exactly.
Even the cops don’t carry assualt weapons. I wonder how they feel having to monitor some crazy carrying one. I wonder if they confronted one of guys on the street at a different place and time without the media around if they would act very differently. This strikes me as a totally atypical police response regardless of the laws.
thats the pic i saw @23
I have a theory that drivers with cell phones should be required to stow them in their ass. A similar requirement for these gun nuts seems appropriate.
someone should ask Darth Dick whether he thinks rethug activists should be allowed to come to president speeches armed. After all, he was the one who routinely had peaceful protestors arrested, for doing things like wearing t-shirts he didn’t like
I like that theory (especially the drivers).
Holy Fucking Shit!
What would have happened a year or two ago if this was a GWBush appearance?
And should we even mention all the preventive arrests in Minneapolis last summer?

that would scare the ever loving crap outta them teehee
good un
Cops carrying a 9mm meeting anyone carrying an AR, AK, or even a Remington 700 is very, very nervous.
Two or three kids even a light shade of dark with their pants hangin’ below their cracks carrying assault rifles, yes, that would go over well, I’m sure. Add a shirt with Che or Malcolm, that would be grounds to take them out.
Hey there, Mistress O’ Science. How are things on the job front?
remember the guy in NOLA who told him to cheney himself?
We got convoked today.
Enrollment is up 10%, SCH up 9 and change. Number of faculty down. I’m so f***ing happy I could ***.
That was truly a classic line.
Escorts and toilets seem to figure prominently in the Republican playbook.
That may have been the only good moment of the whole disaster.
“warning not to look directly at Bush”
I guess that’s fair enough considering the Emperor’s New Clothes.
poor guy was handcuffed to a tree for a few hours….iirc
We don’t get our ritual enema until next week. On the good news front the union (*snort* *giggle* *puke*) bargaining committee is saying no raises this year. We already know that there is more or less a hiring freeze. Dog only knows what enrollments are going to be like.
We know that corporate groups are funding and fronting the tea baggers we know Fox News Promotes the tea baggers actively they never covered the immigration or the million man marches like this.
We know the GOP coordinates with corporations and the media Cokie is an insider’s insider but maybe she felt she had to draw the at organizing bringing gun men to town halls.
After all with thanks to bush the government is recording all our phone calls and I think are emails.
If an accident happens or at a town hall we can if we want to prove collusion between the GOP, Fox News and most of the media to be honest, big corporations and the tea baggers.
Can we say RICO case?
ya kill me
That’s what happens when your policies induce simultaneous projectile vomiting and violent intestinal cramping.
The NRA is making a demonstration here . The fact that the President goes to these places gives this kind of person an opportunity to show off . With all the electronic media we have a town hall meeting could be held with any member of Congress or the President miles away and still answer questions . Then the town hall terrorist would not have a place to terrorize or show off . Then maybe some meaningful health care discussions could be accomplished . I’m surprised Senator Specter didn’t have stroke .
Diapers too.
Literrally laughing so hard I’m crying.
Thanks for that. Needed a laugh like that one.
Really needed it.

BCT–any action with Teague WRT health care?
Unpossible. Ours decided to get in a pissing match with the legislature about 12 years ago. We are still getting screwed over it.
Fully automatics are illegal everywhere unless you have a collector’s license.
Uh how would the police react I’m thinking gunfire lots of gunfire.
Might explain why the Bush/Cheney tenure was one long skid-mark.
their verbiage is similar
And lots of these asshats illegally convert them (for some models it is pretty easy and directions are readily available on the net).
Crowd-control method du jour is the taser. However, not when the perp is packing an automatic weapon.
This cannot end well.

Go to your page at the Seminal click and all your diaries should be there if not just tell the mod here on that something is wrong.
Oh, ours suggested today that reducing the multiplier in the retirement system (for those of us in the State’s defined benefit plan) was a possibility he was looking into to solve the impending budget cut problem.
On the other hand, pissing off the Lege may be a move even stupider than pissing off the Regents.

For some reason I can no longer access anything at The Seminal.

Thanks.

That image actually brings comfort to my mind. Thanks.
It has declined steadily from the previously merely inadequate levels. At some point the Goopers decided that since virtually all of our college graduates leave the state (there are no jobs and the ones there are pay starvation wages), we really did not need to fund the universities to subsidize other states.
I don’t have any problem, are you using the link under the banner at the top of the page (between Laura Flanders and Attackerman)?

Hi Mod I bookmarked this one diary and I get page not found
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/7055#Respond
a killizion years ago, at the age of 13, I was certified fire arms instructor. At that time, there were no AK OR AR firearms available. I tell people when they come to AZ that there are very little or no state laws except the ability to carry and even concealed at that.
No health laws about nail care salons, no laws or regulation about tatoos, you name it…… usually no laws….. except anything dealing with guys…. must have a gun safe inside the “public buildings” at the expense of the government. One bill will allow anyone to conceal and carry that is coming out of the legislators……Guns in Bars……
Oy! I just wet me swaddlin’ clothes (hope they don’t boot me out of the manger).
Or a Heart, a Brain, or Courage
all I can see are the list of the most popular diaries. There’s no way on my screen to get to the list of the latest diaries like there used to be. Nor are there any icons to click.
Hi, BCT
Thanks for axing, but the job search sux.
But, hey, Rachel and Keef have been great tonight.
Hey, AquaKitteh!

Well, as any sentient being (which excludes all Montana Republicans) knows, for an engine to work, you have to feed it. The reality is that Bozeman and Missoula, homes to the two state universities, are the only real bright spots in the state’s economy and always have been. The real problem is that the cretins think that the key to economic development is more logging, more mining, more oil drilling, and more ranching. They do not seem to realize that those are no longer really viable alternatives.
HI KATY!!!GIRL
Yeah, we (me and tech guys here) pretty much agreed it was just me.
I guess I was just hoping because I have no hope of figuring it out myself. But, I can click on any of the links running accross the top, and all work fine except The Seminal. And if I click on one of them listed in the box on the right, it doesn’t work. Earlier today Southern Dragon had a post in a thread where he suggested we click on his name and read his latest, and that fails too.
Anything with the Seminal and my puter no longer opens it. I get HTTP 501/505 Unable to open or something like that. And the strange thing is is that I didn’t change anything, and it just started Saturday. Well, I didn’t change anything I know of, guess automatic updates might’ve done something.
WHEW.
Sorry for this, totally off topic and long too. I won’t bring it up anymore, I just got curious when I saw his post sounding like he might be having trouble too.
yea…basic jello
Guns and alcohol is a recipe for tragedy.
Ahh, now it sounds like THingsComeUndone is having trouble too???
Is this correct???
Economies based on extractive industries seem to be inherently corrupt…
Been there and seen that. Fortunately in both cases they were really bad shots. would not want to have been in the men’s room in both cases, however.
I was having lots of trouble with the newest version (not the beta) of Firefox hanging. Been using Safari for the past several days. Don’t know if it could be a browser problem. If you have some sort of ad-blocker or script blocker plug-in running you might try whitelisting The Seminal page.
There certainly is a lot of potential for corruption. More to the point, they are subject to wild cyclic perturbations and ultimately to depletion. The latter is a big problem for logging and mining here.
Guns in bars with beer? Just who’s bonehead idea is that? Men Booze guns and women to fight over all in an enclosed space OMG does this proposed bill include letting people in bars with semi automatics? I see allot of bars looking like a blender full of tomatoes on the holidays nothing like a 3 day weekend to get your drink on.
Please tell me Fully Automatic weapons are still illegal right?

also, from a seminal page, the only thing to the right is a panel with insurance ads. There does not appear to be any navigational tools or options other than to the immediate last and next diaries at top and bottom.

Just be certain they aren’t Viagra, I’ve heard those can keep people up all night.
G’nite, sadly.
Why may I ask and also two universities are the bright spots in your state’s economy was that true prebank crash?
Someone asked about Teague and health care. Harry’s conflicted. He wants to see something done, but doesn’t want the economic burden of doing something to fall on small bidness.
In a telephone town hall, Harry asked about HR 3200, 48% of the folks on the phone said, “Oppose it.” About 20% said it doesn’t go far enough, and another 25% or so said it’s okay.
If you want my guess, Harry’s going to oppose it. He’s already catching a bunch of flak from the Teabagging crowd over his ACES vote. Former ‘critter Steve Pearce (who quit his seat to get his ass whipped in a run for the Senate) now says he’s going to run to regain his seat in 2010. I suspect Harry’s worried about Pearce: Harry won handily last year, but he can’t count on winning Little Texas by a big margin against Pearce.
A new OK Corral is just around the corner.
I’m sorry, FWD. I wish I could wave a wand and fix all this mishegass.
Sparse population ranked 44th in the U.S. (population density 48th in the U.S.).
Don’t make me Earp, Wyatt. At least not on a Holliday, Doc.
They don’t realize it because they are Republics. Montana has always been based on mining, logging and ranching. That’s how it was and that’s how it ought to be. So they’re going to do their best to make sure that it stays that way.
especially when the armed alcoholic becomes president

Why they are no longer really viable is complicated and varies a bit by industry, but a lot of it has to do with the effects of globalization (which has lowered prices and increased competition) and depletion of the resources.
It is less the universities themselves, though they are large employers which pay higher than usual wages and benefits, than the cities (I use the term loosely) where they are that are doing substantially better than most of the state and have done so for at least 20 years. Virtually all economic and population growth in the state has been in the western third (where both are). Every county in the eastern 2/3 has consistently lost population for 20-30 years.
Didn’t the SS take all the sharp and explosive objects away from the dry-ish drunk?
So he had to choke himself with a pretzel?
But the eastern 2/3 of Montana are on the Plains, no? Almost all the Plains counties from OK and the TX panhandle north have been losing population.
they tried this two years ago and we went door to door to stop it. Now the agenda is way too full to go after this…. now that we have a Repug gov and pretty much a repug legislature…. Also just days after the bills were going to be released a shooting occurred in Tempe and that shut down the legislation.
Fourth largest state in the union, with less than a million people and the third lowest population density. Largest city in the state, Billings, has 90K. We are #2 with about 60K. There are not 10 places in the state with more than 10K. Most of the population is concentrated in the western 1/3.
Yes Just with a book marked diary and I could not open one of EW’s links today I’m not sure if its related to your trouble’s Hmmm? Could the GOP be trying to take down the Lake? Jane’s town hall finder must be pissing them off.
After all before that it looked like the GOP might have been able to shut down the town hall’s. Now they have had to up the ante by sending in gunmen. Once you send gunmen to a town hall I don’t think sabotage of the Lake falls into the realm of tin foil hats.
The GOP would have reason to stop the diaries after all how many people can’t get their friends and relatives to the lake but still email their friends and relatives their diaries?
And get feedback from said friends and relatives who might otherwise never here non GOP news?
Lucky you still have Hannah Montana.
Even when all the resources are gone (as is already the case with most of the precious metals and the large logs). Truth is that we cannot compete with Indonesia and Thailand (virtually all northwest timber is sold to Japan) on timber prices or with them or South America on metals.
Ummm, don’t you have a Republic Governor who is only slightly less bat-shit crazy than Evan Mecham?
Yes and very dry Plains. Not really suited to agriculture except right along the rivers where you can irrigate. Better suited to cattle, and even there often marginal. Much like west Texas and eastern New Mexico.
I think those clowns think the end of the Doxology (As it was in the Beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end, Amen) refers to economic bases.
*RETCH*
Do you know the story of Niihau Island?
20-30 years of loss of population? Thats not sustainable how much longer before town and even County government collapses?
Absolutely. They have not had a new idea since the Middle Ages.
Never heard of it.
This subject would make a great diary.
Sorry ’bout that. Anyway, now that she’s using a stripper pole I suspect her contract with Disney has expired.
Heading out, splendid evening to all.
Tourists are going to be warned don’t drink in AZ bars.
The loss rate has not been huge, more a drip than a flood, and has largely been offset by increased population in the western part of the state (I think the state has actually grown in population during that time). It ultimately is not sustainable for the counties in eastern Montana and many of them are already facing problems with schools and the like. There really are one room school houses in Montana. The total school enrollment in Nye, MT, is 12 (k-12).
It has already been the subject of several books.
But then there is flyfishing and hiking. Those are better pursuits, but I guess they don’t bring in much income, eh?
A family from New Zealand came to Hawaii during the Monarchy, looking for land to buy. At the time, Niihau was covered in lush grass and looked ideal for cattle ranching. They purchased the island from the Crown.
The unusual weather patterns that had supported the extensive pastures on Niihau changed, and the island went dry. They changed the island over to a native Hawaiian preserve.
I sometimes wonder if that isn’t what ought to happen to the Plains. The Ogallala aquifer is going dry, and the dryland yields out there are generally awful. They are certainly insufficient to support capital-intensive agriculture.
Night, rf.
Tourism and related industries are a major growth area in the state, but the jobs do not pay much (mostly minimum wage) and are seasonal. We also do not really have the infrastructure to support massive development (most of us would not want it anyway).
Hey, Dr. Dick. I’m finished with my year of replacing the prof on a Fulbright so I left Butte. What a place.
I’m down in NZ now, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. But I’ll do one course online for MTech and see how that goes.
My phrase for my Butte neighbors was “truculently ignorant and reveling in it.”
The absolute idiocy of raising corn in western Nebraska and western Kansas continues to appall me.
Your not joking are you what is it with Hollywood and Disney in particular and disfunctional child stars?
It is in the water. It seeps out of the Berkely Pit. BTW, the folks in Butte are notorious throughout the state for those qualities.
Can you recommend one?
Actually, from a production perspective, it’s near optimal for raising field corn. Of course, that externalizes the costs of depleting the aquifer.
I’m thinkin’ some of those communities need to consult the Aussies about their School of the Air (classrooms by shortwave radio).
FWDiva
A book if any on that subject if you know of any to recommend please.
it’s ok. God gave their rethugs the land and then gave them permission to grow corn on it.
Not off the top of my head. There is one that suggests essentially what BCT said, turn the whole Plains into a giant nature preserve.
I gathered that as I traveled around the state. I enjoyed the students from other places, though. I do get why they refuse to say Butte, Mt, but instead Butte, America. They don’t seem to like MT and MT doesn’t seem to like them.
Of course, as in any place, I found good aspects. And of course, that was where I got to picnic with candidate Obama and family and about 1000 others, which was better than the other crowded venues in other places.
I don’t know if it was a book or an article that suggested turning the Plains into a great commons and returning it to the buffalo. I’ll see what I can find.
I think online/distance education of some sort is inevitable for most of those counties. Given the large distances and low population density, school consolidation can only provide very limited relief.
Wiki says to look for a 1987 essay by Frank and Deborah Popper, I think, entitled Buffalo Commons.
It sounds like that may be happening in various areas of the west already I wonder how housing prices are in these areas with the banking collapse old people might not be able to afford florida anymore.
Thanks just added it to my list of books to buy.
Trust me, you do not want to live in eastern Montana. 90s in the summer and -40 in the winter, with blizzards. No people, miserable scenery, no stores (people literally drive 100 miles to buy groceries), and no amenities. There are reasons why even the people who grew up there are fleeing.
The Buffalo Commons as I recall advocates turning most of the Plains west of the 100th meridian or so into a national park.
Where Buffalo Roam is slightly less ambitious, but does aim at restoring large areas of tallgrass prairie.
You should see the toasted fields we have in Central and South Texas this year. Anything that was planted is burnt to a crisp. The corn didn’t even get big enough to form ears before the drought and heat killed it. The amzing thing is that the aquifer is holding up fairly well because of pumping and usage reforms put in place in the 1990’s. Our springs went dry during the 50’s drought. They are still running despite this drought being even more severe.
It was one thing to live there when you were a subsistence farmer. It’s something entirely different (and even less desirable) now.
I saw a story on that on the news tonight. Really sounds bad down there. I feel bad for the farmers and ranchers.
i wonder what’s that like … wearing weapons openly at a presidential event ?? ..and knowing full well that probably no less than three snipers have you in their crosshairs ..just waiting for you to sneeze ??
It was pretty bleak even then. Much of eastern Montana is still public land because they couldn’t even give it away. The railroad, which had alternate sections of land along the tracks in the area, lured many unsuspecting dupes to their ruin with blatantly false advertising. Half of the farms and ranches in the state went bust at least 3 times in the 20th century.
Yes, we are hoping for a hurricane to hit the coast between Corpus Christi and Brownsville – where there is nothing but the King Ranch – and slowly making its way up through the center of the state. Last year Dolly did that, (although it did hit Brownsville and SPI and damaged them). It was the six inches we got last July from Dolly that has carried the aquifer through, I believe.
I guess Sitting Bull et al. were correct. Subsistence hunting was the appropriate way of life for that region.
Of course, you can’t support very high population densities when you’re subsistence hunters.
Hah! Sounds like this part of Ohio. Actually sounds like several parts…
Here is hoping you get your wish, several times over.
Exactly.
And, as I mentioned, the Aussies have used distance learning for decades. FWDiva
Here is the wiki entry on the Ogallala Aquifer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogallala_Aquifer
One prime paragraph:
Good night, ‘pups.
Cattle raising is an economically viable strategy, but it requires huge amounts of land and, again, will not support very many people any more.
Night, BCT.
I’m out of here. It is time for Wine Tuesday in Taupo, or as one said, “5:00? Time for drinkies!” The only workaholic I know in this town is the one I imported, my husband. He’s happily hoping to map and age all the ground water he can. Oh well, he can always pick me up from Wine Tuesdays and drive me home.
(This is a seriously beautiful and relaxed country, especially out of Auckland. Each passing day, I’m more and more horrified looking back at what pours out of the US media. I need to remember how absolutely beautiful a country it is. Coming to this lake reminds me that sanity persists. But what happened to the sense that the nightmare was ending when we elected Obama?)
This is what eastern Montana looks like (this is near Wolf Point in the northeast part of the state).
Night, AdAstra.
“if they’ve lost Cokie Roberts, they’ve lost the nation”
Think I will head out as well. Take care all.
And you just know if he’d been arrested for, you know, wandering about with a powerful assault rifle next to the President of the United Fucking States of America, he’d have claimed his rights were being trampled on.
What the hell do these people do with their brains? It’s obviously not thinking!
True and or its the Apocalypse I was leaning toward the Apocalypse myself but if Cokie has defected from the believers to the reality camp then every talking head to the left of Pat Buchanan should be heading our way.

“Miles From Nowhere” by Dayton Duncan is an easy read and a good book on the population of west.
Nice country
Tsunami!
And with that, it is lights out at the Gnome house. See y’all tomorrow.
Thanks i added it to my list.
It’s called a (NFA 1934) class III tax stamp, not a collectors license. Very limited number of legally traded fully automatic weapons, some destructive device manufacture is still allowed (short barrel rifles, noise suppressors). There are a fair number of fully automatic weapons in the possession of police agencies (which are exempt from the ban on transfer of weapons manufactured after May 19th 1986).
Absolutely correct that openly carrying a weapon to a presidential event would mean you’re in a Secret Service sniper’s sights at all times (along with a SS spotter to give a fire order when appropriate). Duh. Anyone that wouldn’t realize that is quite a few bricks short of a load.
I would imagine shoot to kill is the rule. Political repercussions of an armed citizen being killed by Secret Service have to be the subject of some discussion. I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that, the crazies reaction could lead to a lot more dead crazies.
A carbine versus a handgun at close range… handgun has better ability to move in close quarters, cop probably has the advantage. Of course the guy was described as having a handgun as well. Even so I’d think the mandatory range time of the cop might help.
Tasers are terrible things and the police are abusing people with them. Tasers were intended to be used to replace lethal force. Instead they are used with little discretion to shock the piss out of “non-compliant” citizens.
Since tasers are abused anyway, why not zap these gun toters into compliance? Make some tea for a tea party.
Thanks
This could be a cry for help from Cokie, for more cocktail wienies and koolaid no doubt.
I have to say though I was surprised to hear even Charlie Gibson this evening say that it seemed if a public option was stripped out that there would be no way in any of the bills to control costs. Could have knocked me over with a feather –attached to a stiff drink.
I doubt the tide has turned to such a degree (I was just riffing on LBJ/Cronkite); Ms. Senator’s daughter, the Beltway Blatherer Roberts is the ultimate lazy “insider” usually heard spewing pre-chewed banalities. and tripe such as this:
Maybe the difference is that for President Obama the Constitution is not just a … piece of paper.
Back to OnTopic, I’d heard and thought, the black guy in the pic with the AR Mini 15 and the holstered sidearm was Black, and an Obama supporter.
This SHOULD be changing the dialogue, folks.
Cuz now it’s NOT about the fringe loons.
It’s about, is it kewl to counter them with their own methods?
Shift in level of issue, shift in level of concern.
Do we meet intimidation with intimidation?
And risk a mess when SOMEONE finally cracks and draws down on someone?
And semi-auto’s are involved, likely with shaved down firing pins to go fully auto?
So, what’s the dialogue, and concern, now?
Obama supporters with guns, in the faces of the right wing whackaloons?
And hell, let’s not dance around it, BLACK Obama supporters, with guns, in the same places as white, racist and loony gun carrying white people?
Ya think SOMEONE ain’t gonna throw down in that scenerio?
Last Amendment Standing
Ahhh, the good old days when exercising your first amendment right to free speech constituted an assault on the vice war criminal in chief.

Watertiger, you had me at: “can you even begin to imagine …”
Pres. Obama, we thought you were smarter than the previous administration, and had better character. But when you align your administration with Bush policies, you’re as bad as Bush. Wash your hands, sir.
Obama probably figured, hey Bush was about as flaccid an intellect as they come, so I can coast. Um, no, sir.
How to Shut Down a Public Meeting.
So if 50 people show up armed what are the police supposed to do? They don’t have enough cops to monitor everybody to prevent action, so I guess they would have to disperse everybody rather than disarm the gun-nuts.
More Bush/Cheney Security Stories
1) A 68 year old man was tased and arrested because he wanted to travel the last half block to his home and objected to a cordon for Dick Cheney’s motorcade.
2) President lands in Grapevine on his way to summer vacation in Crawford
Its not about a threat to Obama, its a means of escalating the intimidation to cripple the political process brown shirt style.
Had an interesting go-round in the comments on that TPM article over the fact that while the AR-15 is a rifle and a lethal weapon it is not an assault rifle… which is a far deadlier weapon.
If the left is going to try to be as stupid as the right and drag up the failed aspects of their half of the culture wars then the left is doomed… cause the wingnuts have the edge in “stupid” and the home court advantage in “crazy.”
Only if they have the 2nd Amendment do they consider themselves “free.” Any other freedom is irrelavent.
LOL! A dozen protesters packing heat while the Democratic president is speaking: not arrested or hassled. Any protester wearing counter-to-approved T-shirt at a republican rally: arrested, hassled, sometimes thrown to the ground. There’s change for you.
While it appears that most of us can’t answer the question as to whether the AR-15 was brought by someone against or for health-care reform, it seems likely that the against is the most likely. Carrying a gun to a public meeting rarely suggests a person open to dissenting viewpoints.
The big question though would be whether any of the intrepid gun toters upgraded to full-auto. The AR-15 converts to a dandy M16 and an UZI semi-auto might be a bit easier still. Of course if you bring a couple of clips then converting the semi-auto with the intent to just rip through the entire clip, via a bit of filing might be an easier way to meet your goal.
Guns and frank discussions on controversial subjects, two things that just naturally go together.
@Zapkitty an assault rifle is not defined by whether it is full-auto but by it’s design features and intended function. An assault rifle has features that are conducive to urban and jungle warfare in contrast to, say, a wooden stock hunting rifle. Light weight, folding stocks and quick breakdown are useful attributes of an assault rifle. An assault rifle is not necessarily a full-auto, machine-gun.
To extend the semi-auto versus full-auto discussion a bit further. Fully automatic guns tend to jam and unless used prudently, if such a word applies, the shooter tends to run out of ammunition quickly. Given the same kind of gun and same number of bullets there are probably few instances where spraying bullets would have a big advantage over aiming and pulling the trigger. All sniper rifles are either semi-automatic or bolt action for that reason. Fully automatic pistols were discarded a long time ago for this very reason.
Guns should never be considered safe simply because they can’t spray bullets by holding down the trigger.
No.
An assault rifle has, among other things, a selective fire setting that includes single shot and automatic fire capability.
If it does not have that capability it is not an assault rifle. And the AR-15 does not have that capability.
Therefore when you label a winger as carrying an assault rifle you are accusing them of breaking the law when you have no evidence that they are, in fact, breaking the law… which plays into their hands.
There isn’t much functional difference between an “assault” rifle and a auto-loading hunting rifle. Mostly black plastic that makes people go “ooo scary gun”.
Quit perpetuating the myth that it is easy to convert a semi-auto sear to fully auto. it isn’t that easy and it is very illegal under GCA 1968. BATF investigates credible claims of illegal conversion and people have died during enforcement operations. Full auto conversions are not widespread, and I’d venture the few illegal fully automatic weapons out there are primarily diverted from military or police, not converted from semi-auto.
I agree with you that fully auto is over rated.
Guns are as safe as the person carrying them. Basic safety rules – treat every firearm as loaded, keep finger away from trigger until ready to shoot, do not point gun at anything you aren’t willing to shoot.
I’m getting a little tired of the whole “guns at public meetings” thing….I don’t have a problem with gun ownership, as I’m not consciously a hypocrite (generally speaking), but how stupid can you be? Even aside from the puerility, do these goofballs think the cops aren’t watching? More, perhaps, to the point, don’t they recognize that there’s a reasonable chance that I’m standing right behind them and I don’t need a gun to put them in a lot of hurt if they so much as sneeze?
How’s this for a suggestion: henceforth, all proponents of health care reform, or anything else that those from beyond the Palin oppose, should bring a SUBSTANTIAL sex-toy to any rally/town-hall they attend. If you can find one big enough, put a rifle-sling on it. And paint it day-glo pink, preferably metallic.
Spread the word.
You can’t buy sex toys in some states (Alabama and Texas). Public display is probably deemed obscene even if you lawfully own out of state sex toys.
I didn’t think I was perpetuating a myth that converting for instance an AR-15 to an M16 was easy. It can be done and plenty of people may not be taking that into account in the whole, bring a gun to public meetings trend. In the far gone past I knew some folks that claimed they had fully automatic weapons but I suspect they were blowing smoke. As you say a plastic stock on a semi-automatic is one of the delineating features of an assault rifle but the actual essential mechanisms can be exactly the same.
Definitely agree with the safety tips but that doesn’t mean that I think that anyone but a cop needs to carry a gun in a public meeting. Putting two angry guys at each other when both are armed is a risk without a reward.
I don’t think guns at public meetings is a good idea.
Many (most?) people that carry give some thought to when they would escalate from just having the weapon to preparing to use it, to actually using it. And just exchanging angry words wouldn’t be enough to even start preparing to use it.
AR-15 to M-16 conversions are not easy. A competent machinist could do it if they were willing to risk their tools and freedom. A home hobbiest might be able to do it if they had a good milling machine, but again the risk to freedom makes it unlikely. Could some crazy militia decide to do wholesale modification to their member’s weapons? Sure it could be done. Is BATF and other Law Enforcement looking for this? Absolutely.
Fully auto weapons aren’t that useful anyway. Hard to aim, need to change magazines frequently, allow barrels to cool – all of these are problems. There’s a good reason for the basic military issue M4 carbine not having full-auto capacity.
