north coast is having a heat wave starting tomorrow – could hit 106 in pdx tuesday and they are predicting 90’s here on the coast. currently 54 and stars outside.
shiza!! We are supposed to cool off… hit 85 today but was still a very nice day!! 4 more days and we are flittering off to Boston… Bought Two suits today for the weddings… shit I haven’t bought a suite in 30 years!!
But of course Laptop is among the most important things coming with us… of course it will be kept right with me .. And We will be checking in as much as possible!

My newer laptop is on its way to the shop, so I’m on the one that logs me in under my real name, but you can call me ET.
We had a party last night. A friend won a catered meal at home for ten, at a fundraiser for a kid we know that was severely injured in a car crash. The best ravioli I’ve ever had in my life. Made right in our kitchen by Chef Jeff.
Hi Suz, hope you don’t have a long hot spell.
I may be seeing the Beach Boys at our county fair this week.
That’s if I can get a ticket…usually it’s some young country singer no one’s ever heard of. And it’s only 3 blocks away from me.
Here’s a funny Ruth Buzzy story: she was on some roast, or something, years after the LaughIn was over, and she said the only thing she ever got out of that show was that she always has to clean up in airplane bathrooms, because whenever she comes out of the loo on a plane, people always say, “Oh my god, aren’t you Ruth Buzzy?” She says she knows if she leaves a mess, even the mess of the person before her, the following person who recognized her will go back to their seatmate and say, “Oh my, remember that Ruth Buzzy from LaughIn? She’s a real pig in airliner bathrooms! What a mess she left!”
So she’s always cleaning up after other people in airplane bathrooms, she says.
et – you get the recipe?
margot – i came through the last one just fine – as long as i stayed at the coast. it was that driving to california and back with no a/c that forked me up.
Hello, is this the party to whom I AM speaking? It is? A gracious good morning to you, madam. Is your refrigerator running? It is? You better go catch it!
~snork snork!~
I missed all of the SNL pre-election shows featuring tina Fey as Palin and am seeing it for the 1st time on their special tonite. Tina Fey is staggeringly perfect!
Years ago I “adopted/was adopted by” some Russian immigrants, who are steadfastly family to this day. Long story short, baby Dasha is 4 months old today, and I finished an original piece for her.
Let me know what you think
A little waltz-capriccio crazyness, but fun, because that’s how that family and that kid are. Just light and cool.
Nope!! But the Lake is supposed to be great for swimming in!! At least that is what my sis said today!! We sure are looking forward to this trip… first vacation in four years… I think we earned it!!
I didn’t make it, but the pasta was spinach-based, and the filling was butternut squash.
If this rain keeps up, I’m hoping the King Boletus mushrooms will bloom in quantity this year. I’d like to try ravioli with boletus-Hubmoldt Fog chevre filling and rosemary-spinach-basil pasta shrouding.
I did watch, but the party was at our place and I was both wine steward and outdoor fire pit tender, so I just saw enough to figure out they (Chef Jeff had an assistant) knew what they were doing.
Checking in at the Lake after a long time on the road. I’ve arrived in New Zealand where I expect to be for at least five years.
We’ve got strong southerly winds, making for waves on Lake Taupo. But the sun is out after a dreary week of rain. Most lovely. Some of the spring flowers are starting to show, particularly on the fruit trees.
Guess I’m going back on the expat shift…it is about 5:45 pm on Monday, Aug 17. Glad to see some of you up and about.
AS you might assume, the health care ruckus looks incomprehensible from here. One of my many fundamentalists cousins was worried about me. “Why are you going there? Aren’t they socialists?” Sigh.
Abso-freakin-lutely!
Unless it’s too much of a pain. But I think Little Dasha should have the autograph copy for her memory book. She can play it at her Senior Recital. Then musicololologists can analyze the “Dasha Notebooks” for years to come…
Well…maybe that’s a little much, but I think it would be worth it to put on paper.
Course, I have no piano skillz and even fewer composition skillz, so what do I know? And, yes, part-leading and harmonic analysis were a huge pain without piano skillz…
figured i’d better cut into my copious overtime hours and show up here so y’all don’t forget me.
*lifts eyebrow at larue* dood, i think i’m gonna call mrs larue and tell her to take your choke chain in another notch. Dancing on the bar indeed. Harumph.
Nothing is perfect, of course, anywhere. But to recognize that health care is a human right, not an occasion of profit-taking is a pleasant change, for sure.
Hi, Suz. Seattle is nice and temperate today. Sounds like you’ll get the worst of the heat wave…we’re only supposed to see low to mid-80s on the 5-day, and that’s just really mild compared to our Week of Hell, and a nice change from our unusually chilly and wet August so far.
I’ve been away from the toobz much of this weekend. Any Must Read Posts I should catch up on?
Oh, and it looks like Dan Froomkin is back in mid-season form over at HuffPo. Good stuff, Maynard!
A damn goodie – Dianna can also SING like the devil. :) You know the other part of it, the piano, is really a big deal.
On a grand piano, gravity plays a big part. The hammers and dampers act differently on an “up and down” basis, versus a “side to side” basis on console or studio piano. So you can get that quick, soft and “naughty” sotto voce on a grand that you can’t get on a console/studio.
Thanks , but as sharp as she is in those situations, she makes own luck.
I thought she started mellow, but by the middle she was wrapping up her answers in tidy, irrefutable packages. And quoting him off a written page – he had to feel naked up there.
She never gave him the chance! Pounced on his ass before he could get his fat mouth moving. Seriously, the first 20 minutes he was flustered and making no sense.
I loved the way she looked him straight in the face the whole time either was talking, while the thug’s eyes darted left and right as he lied about his “Freedom Fries” operation-and was just staring at the table like a drunk in the bar at closing time. Glorious!
Yes! She had him locked in. That was a remarkable tactic.
She is beyond ready for these high-profile appearances, and deadly in a very soft kind of way.
Given the flow of the show, I can’t see a way to isolate her segments and maintain context. She doesn’t have that much air-time, but when she does, they turn the debate.
The douchebag tried to do that whole smug “I’ll laugh you off this stage” crap like he did with Joan. But he looked like a ass cuz he was getting slapped left and right. God, I loved it! She started right in with what’s on his website right now and MAKING him admit it. LMAO!!
Two more things – Gregory could have been (and has been) a whole lot worse. My worry is that he would just kind of marshal her out of the way, but he either couldn’t or didn’t.
And Charlie Rangle had perhaps the worse appearance possible. He added nothing and made himself look like a complete ass.
I thought Gregory was pretty fair too. But I swear, Rachel’s immediate energy and truth revitalized both Daschle and Gregory. It was like Gregory realized, “Yeah, that’s what this show should be about.”
And Daschle has looked like a man on death row ever since the thugs targeted and removed him from the senate- and for a prick like Thane too. Well, he felt the jolt too and went afterCoburn with vigor in the beginning.
It was beautiful.
Rangle’s earplug really messed him up and he never recovered. I did like that he was putting down the Senate, which is a bad joke.
well time for me to head out – got a dentist appt tomorrow – he’s gonna work on those two bottom teeth that need saving. *sigh* i think i’m getting one maybe two root canals. yuck.
My argument with Rangle isn’t that he doesn’t have anything to say, but that he was scattergun. I missed the earpiece problem.
OK, I have the thing edited down to less than 14 minutes. Requires a lot of Armey because she pivots off of him throughout. I’ll have a condensed version in about 20 minutes in two parts.
When I was in teevee, I could edit videotape. But, generally my mind doesn’t process well in technical areas. Always amazed how others can. If someone shows me how to do something and then has me physically do it, it sometimes sticks.
Hah! That is much better. Part 1 looks great. When Rachel goes to her crib note quotes, the fool started stuttering. “…well your organization is part of that group.” DUH!
Part 2 also looks great. Nice dissolves! Notice neither Armey or Coburn wanted to go head-to-head with her? A definite reverence had evolved. LOL.
I forgot how Rachel virtually burst out laughing at Armey, but just managed to contain herself while saying, “Well, that’s because it has nothing to do with health care.
And the way you edited her close would be chilling to Dems, “They would think it would not be a good way to spend their capital.”
Damn, liked it even better the 2nd time. Thanks Newton!
And the way you edited her close would be chilling to Dems, “They would think it would not be a good way to spend their capital.”
That wasn’t me. Sometimes the teevee Gawds leave unexpected gifts.
Point is, she made her own luck. She drew down on that cretin when it did the most good for the argument, and the studio ‘felt’ it coming and did their jobs. She has incredible timing.
and the political capital remark – that should be a t-shirt. what a beautiful close to the appearance.
Now THAT is sure! I think Rob Lowe did sign a pact with the thug devil, though.
Right now I have 40 West Wings tivo-ed. But my favorite is “Noel” with Adam Arkin counseling Josh after getting shot. THAT was spectacular television writing. I’m a Sorkin freak anyway.
Ah, another Sorkin aficionado…
If I had to pick one episode, it would be “17 People,” although the final six episodes of season 2 are a monument to Sorkin’s ability to manipulate his audience. That first conversation between the First Lady and the White House counsel from “Bad Moon Rising”- dialog nirvana.
“Mrs. Bartlet, I’m not sure you have an appropriate appreciation of the size of what happens next.“
As long as the copyright police don’t come knocking, I will take credit. But I’m sure it didn’t start with me.

her stuff about the phone company being omnipotent is spot on
I missed all of the SNL pre-election shows featuring tina Fey as Palin and am seeing it for the 1st time on their special tonite. Tina Fey is staggeringly perfect!
Hi Suz/pups.
hey emerson hows the east bay?
Oh and BTW, I have a quickie!
Years ago I “adopted/was adopted by” some Russian immigrants, who are steadfastly family to this day. Long story short, baby Dasha is 4 months old today, and I finished an original piece for her.

light and fun always has a place kelly – i like dasha’s waltz
didja watch while he made it?
that sounds wonderful dood. after i get teeth, a trip to alaska is first on my list.
Hot in the daytime; perfect when the sun goes down.
kewl beans. i remember those august summer nights well.
Oh I like it, and what a cool thing to compose for little Dasha!
Grazie! Or rather “Dobry!”
I did watch, but the party was at our place and I was both wine steward and outdoor fire pit tender, so I just saw enough to figure out they (Chef Jeff had an assistant) knew what they were doing.
Thanks – I appreciate that!

hey funny – how’s seattle?
“Good, then you know what I’m here after.” *G*
Nice clip, sure brings back the memories.
Great show, that one and That Was The Week That Was (TW3).
Wow, where’d the years go . . . .
i know that you are not alone in going ex-pat. i know of others who are talking about going to canada and european nations where health care exists.
i’ve given it some thought myself and if health care reform gets as fucked as i fear it will, going ex-pat will have to be evaluated.
It’s just some clowning around – you think I should write it out?
hey larue – i figure these clips are about the same age as woodstock
write it out, wrap it up with a bow and give it to her parents kelly

Nothing is perfect, of course, anywhere. But to recognize that health care is a human right, not an occasion of profit-taking is a pleasant change, for sure.
not too bad, ma’am. I have just enough time in my day to skim late-late comment threads, so kinda-sorta keep up with y’all.
Hi, ndfg!
Welcome back, Ad Astra.

emerson she has such a lovely touch – tis a good song for a late sun evening
i figure i’ll hit 80 and will more than likely be in the high 70’s – glad i’m not gonna be in portland. triple digits – yuck
*waves at FWDiva*
Dang, that’s sweet…
aint it tho – emerson found a goodie
A damn goodie – Dianna can also SING like the devil. :) You know the other part of it, the piano, is really a big deal.

hey dude, that is good.
Diana is pretty unremarkable on the surface, but there’s something about her. And live – wow.
hey suz!
hey newton – whazzup?
Yeah, I thought so too, Suz. Her Paris DVD is excellent.
I like this one too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xTQi6Fi3ds
sweatin it out. it’s 82 here still. nice night for a walk.
i’m so glad i’m not there newton – 82 is about the upper limit of my heat tolerence in the forking daytime…. that’s just too hot to sleep at night
i didn’t know that she was elvis costello’s other half, emerson.
Yeah, Elvis likes those sweet young thangs. I think they had a baby in the last year or two.
Usually when I go into SF these days, it’s to hear live music like this. Nice little clubs, gin & jazz.
Hey Newton-nice call on Rachel today. She gave him hell.
i slept through it :) did he try to go all joan walsh on her?
One more thing on my way out “Tenderly”
Thanks for all your supportive comments about the music. Loving you all at the Lake @ Late Late night-
Kelly
Thanks , but as sharp as she is in those situations, she makes own luck.
I thought she started mellow, but by the middle she was wrapping up her answers in tidy, irrefutable packages. And quoting him off a written page – he had to feel naked up there.
Armey got smoked.
She never gave him the chance! Pounced on his ass before he could get his fat mouth moving. Seriously, the first 20 minutes he was flustered and making no sense.
g’nite kelly – thanks for sharing your music with us
i’m gonna have to find the video of it…. sounds like fun (hehehehe)
She actually did lay a trap for him I think.
And sitting them side by side – genius.
Yeah, baby.
Daschle was as useless as he could be. She was completely solo and handled herself very well.
OOh, is there a linky to Rachel’s performance?
FWDiva
At #93, DIVA

FWDiva
Yes! She had him locked in. That was a remarkable tactic.
She is beyond ready for these high-profile appearances, and deadly in a very soft kind of way.
and here is the transcript for those on dialup
Yah, thanks
Do I have to watch the whole show, or just the segments with Rachel in the thumbnail or description?
FWDiva
Given the flow of the show, I can’t see a way to isolate her segments and maintain context. She doesn’t have that much air-time, but when she does, they turn the debate.
But I will try.
The douchebag tried to do that whole smug “I’ll laugh you off this stage” crap like he did with Joan. But he looked like a ass cuz he was getting slapped left and right. God, I loved it! She started right in with what’s on his website right now and MAKING him admit it. LMAO!!
Owww, thanks for the transcript. Yawl’s descriptions (thanks Newton) are so excellent, I’ve got the flavor.
my pleasure sunny

g’nite and thank you for a lovely sunday evening.
My argument with Rangle isn’t that he doesn’t have anything to say, but that he was scattergun. I missed the earpiece problem.
OK, I have the thing edited down to less than 14 minutes. Requires a lot of Armey because she pivots off of him throughout. I’ll have a condensed version in about 20 minutes in two parts.
nite suz
Thanks Suz and good luck tomorrow. Just think how great you’re gonna look when all this is over. *g*
That’s what David Gregory is there for, to ensure the status quo isn’t endangered.
g’nite, all
How cool! You must work with computers a lot.
Re:Rangel-it was in the beginning when Gregory kept stepping on him. sounded like one of them was on a :03 delay. I agree he was scattered.
You’re a trouper. (((suz)))
Hey, I won Final Cut in a raffle. Seems like a huge waste to let it rot.
Uh oh, don’t know what that means. (I think I’m out of my league. *g*
An edit device for computers?
Oops, sorry.
Apple’s video editing suite is called Final Cut.
When I was in teevee, I could edit videotape. But, generally my mind doesn’t process well in technical areas. Always amazed how others can. If someone shows me how to do something and then has me physically do it, it sometimes sticks.
I learned a little (a very little) non-linear (purely digital) video editing from some experts. I don’t know the first thing about editing tape.
OK, Rachel on Meet The Press, part one.
That’s the way I learn, too. The book is of very little use to me.
More correctly put I think, I am of very little use to the book.
Rachel on Meet The Press, part two of two.
Hah! That is much better. Part 1 looks great. When Rachel goes to her crib note quotes, the fool started stuttering. “…well your organization is part of that group.” DUH!
“Move-on! Move-on! Move-on!”
Right, Dick.
