Last year, speaking about President Obama’s planned expansion of AmeriCorps, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said she’d have a hard time if her child joined up for the planned re-eduction. Now that her son has enlisted in Teach for America, will Bachmann denounce him as an Obama fellow-traveler?

In April, Bachmann said:

I believe when it’s all said and done, this service that — I believe that there’s a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums. It’s very concerning. It appears that there’s a philosophical agenda behind all of this, and especially if young people are mandated to go into this. As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this. Again, a huge power-grab, at a cost of billions of dollars.

Of course, it’s not really volunteerism, since the minions actually get paid:

Here’s what Bachmann said about President Obama’s plan to expand AmeriCorps, a program that puts young adults to work making the world a better place by teaching disadvantaged kids and helping the poor:

"[It's] under the guise of quote, volunteerism, but it’s not volunteers at all," she said on the Sue Jeffers radio show in April. "It’s paying people to do work on behalf of government. There are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people get trained in the philosophy the government puts forward and then they have to go work in these politically correct forums.

"As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this."

You’ve probably guessed by now that Bachmann’s son, Harrison Bachmann, recently joined Teach for America (TFA), one of the programs under the AmeriCorps umbrella.

One more federal paycheck for the Bachmann family. When does that become socialism leading to crippling dependence on big government largesse, I wonder?
