Last year, speaking about President Obama’s planned expansion of AmeriCorps, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said she’d have a hard time if her child joined up for the planned re-eduction. Now that her son has enlisted in Teach for America, will Bachmann denounce him as an Obama fellow-traveler?
In April, Bachmann said:
I believe when it’s all said and done, this service that — I believe that there’s a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums. It’s very concerning. It appears that there’s a philosophical agenda behind all of this, and especially if young people are mandated to go into this. As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this. Again, a huge power-grab, at a cost of billions of dollars.
Of course, it’s not really volunteerism, since the minions actually get paid:
Here’s what Bachmann said about President Obama’s plan to expand AmeriCorps, a program that puts young adults to work making the world a better place by teaching disadvantaged kids and helping the poor:
"[It's] under the guise of quote, volunteerism, but it’s not volunteers at all," she said on the Sue Jeffers radio show in April. "It’s paying people to do work on behalf of government. There are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people get trained in the philosophy the government puts forward and then they have to go work in these politically correct forums.
"As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this."
You’ve probably guessed by now that Bachmann’s son, Harrison Bachmann, recently joined Teach for America (TFA), one of the programs under the AmeriCorps umbrella.
One more federal paycheck for the Bachmann family. When does that become socialism leading to crippling dependence on big government largesse, I wonder?

She is such a clown!
HI, Teddy. Glad you wrote about this. Well done. I like for her to be front and center of the loonies.
Socialism is so bad that Bachmann’s son joined it? Bah hahahahahahahaha! Too funny. If he’s being paid and is not volunteering, then I think BachmannCrazy needs to do some explaining!
Will Bachman’s son denounce his mother as a loon?
Hey Teddy – how’s everything in the bay area?
My guess is he wants to get as far from her as possible. I’m surprised he didn’t join the French Foreign Legion.
You silly librul ! ! !
It’s not “socialism” when folks like the Bachmann’s get gubmint chex, it’s socialism when “those other people” (wink, wink, nod, nod) get gubmint chex.
Silly librul, chex are for Republicans (and anyone in the military industrial complex)
OH, forgot to mention.
LOVE THE PICTURE.
Nice job Teddy.
I hear the loons calling …
Palin/Bachmann 2012
Palin/Bachmann 2012
Palin/Bachmann 2012.
Congratulations to Harrison Bachmann for choosing to serve his country. He is a true patriot and a fine American.
Maybe he did it so he could get government health care.
or not.
Here in Pittsburgh for teh netroots DFH convention. At the Omni. Wondering where the FDL pups are.
Why do these people find themselves so filled with fear? Exhausting.
that would be way too much to hope for.
OT – I just got the summer issue of WIN magazine from the War Resisters League. I looked for this little blurb in the online edition but it doesn’t seem to be there.
“New Blog Covers World Nonviolence
Journalists and activists…have launched a new website, Waging Nonviolence, that provides news, analysis, and original reporting on the use of nonviolence by ordinary people around the world in their struggle for justice.”
The leading piece at the site is “The rise of corporate activism.”
Carry on.
He is doing good and so are others who join. I felt the same going into the Peace Corps many years ago.
Check the bar.
The sky is clearing and the night
Has cried enough
The sun, he come, the world
to soften up
Rejoice, rejoice, we have no choice but
To carry on
thanks!
did. No one familiar. Scarecrow is in his room fighting with his computer. Cheapest glass of wine at the
barTerrace is $11. Oy.Hope you have a great time at NN with the Firepups.
We’re holding down the fort in CA.
Now that will keep one sober, IMHO
11$? yikes!
The planners cloned Jane—or need to, as they scheduled her to be in 2 different places at the same time. And one of her events is scheduled opposite Christy’s. Ian’s coming in tomorrow. No sign yet of FDL gathering but I’ll be on the lookout. Eli lives here so he has to be around somewhere.
or drinking somewhere else.
It seems that there are ample parties with libations being thrown by various groups. I have a feeling that much of the imbibing will happen at those venues.
Not drinking keeps one sober.
Clevvveeer.
Maybe you can get some teabagger whine for free, RevDeb?
Practice practice practice
or,as the Dead said
Some folks look for answers
Others look for fights
Some folks up in treetops
Just look to see the sights
I can tell your future
Look what’s in your hand
But I can’t stop for nothing
I’m just playing in the band
You’re welcome. The rest of the blurb makes it sound really interesting. Mayhaps I’ll spend a little time there tonight. Also saw a book at WRL that I might pick up. Handbook for Nonviolent Campaigns. Nice to see ya.
Enjoy your time there. I had a great time last year in Austin, but couldn’t make it this year.
cute. I wonder if any of them will show up to picket the Big Orange Commie Fest. Wouldn’t that be fun!
Watching Rachel and munching on some fudge I brought with from vacation trip. That and water. Very sober tonight.
Ask one of the hotel staff where a good bar close by is.
Quite literally true…thanks for the information;)
SD, One more Angela update, my arms are scarred in ways not a few days ago. This girl has amazing nails.
This one may be the smallest FDL turnout yet. I’ll let you all know as the days unfold. I know that Christy, Jane, Ian and the Crow are or will be here ‘cuz the first 3 are listed in the program and I spoke with SC earlier tonight.
Anyone know who else planned to be here?
It seems a better caption for the photo is:
Yes, we are laughing AT YOU.
Heh, you should see mine. Needles and razor blades all in one. She mindin’ the store, is she? Get a good pair of clippers. Saves complicated claw snags.
thanks, you too.
that handbook looks good. love love love the WRL!
Very serious folks. No bs from these folks.
please give ‘em hell from the rest of us who aren’t there (and of course hope you have a great time)!
Marcy got there last night.
KO (watching the rerun) talking about “sincere” repubs—Grassley, Enzi, Snow. What is he smoking?
They sincerely want to kill any kind of meaningful reform.
Ah, as the great left wing conspirators gather…
ah yes, how could I forget? She’s on a panel too.
I thought she was driving today. I brought a picture of our new kittens (one named Marcy) to show her.
All these old white dudes need to take a life long sabbatical.
amen!
peace out. later pups…..
Oh, hell, I almost forgot. Gotta pimp my own shit. Sunday afternoons I’m doing a post at Seminal just for tiger lovers to talk tigers. No politics, no nothin’ ‘ceptin’ tigers.
Just got an e-mail from Brendan:
If Joe did say that we need to get him to take the pledge on Friday in front of all the DFH’s
And the wingnuts were probably polite because it was held in a Black Church in Philly. Not much mystery there.
I suppose next we’ll have a lecture from Sarah Palin about bloggers bringing politicians’ children into the discussion….
Can you say scared shitless. I knew you could. LOL
Cooled off a little today, although I’m bummed the fog has shrouded our view of the meteor showers, as it almost always does this time of year.
I’ve been learning a lot about nonviolent resistance by following the events in Honduras as the happen here:
http://narcosphere.narconews.c…..-and-flock
The site’s publisher and some employees have been reporting from inside Honduras. It’s been fascinating, and info you don’t see anywhere else.
I didn’t know about the group you linked up, and will be visiting often. Thanks!
Is there still a Golden Dragon restaurant in Chinatown? The one that was shot up in the early 70s?
Of course I’m grateful for Harrison’s service, which according to Keith Olbermann had to have been arranged prior to his mother’s strange statements about re-education camps. I wonder now why she felt the need to demonize those who would serve in AmeriCorps as being re-educated?
Hoist one for me, dear, I’ll miss you there this year. Staying west to watch the townhalls evolve.
You’re welcome and thanks for that link.
I’ve been hesitant b/c I cut alittle too far on an earlier incarnation…may try again very carefully. Thanks for the idea. All worth it, huh?
He’s quoting our president’s characterization of those GOPs at his town hall meeting in NH yesterday, I believe.
Hi, Rev – wish I could be there.
But it’s possible that Jane has not arrived, I guess – there’s a post from her this p.m. that she was in “stuck-on-the-plane-not-taking-off” hell…and I’ve been looking for an update but having found one.
I believe she was flying out of LaGuardia.
Sure hope she is not still flying (or worse, waiting! the title of her post is “Waiting”)- it’s now after 10:00 pm Eastern, right?
That was Obama talking about the “sincere” repubs. He’s the one I was wondering about.
It will be interesting to see if he ever learns his lesson about how “sincere” and “reasonable” they really aren’t.
And I will most definitely hoist one for you. Hopefully along with whatever other pups are here.
Comments on Jane’s post indicated her flight was cancelled.
Katie Couric talked tonight about Grassley facing “questions” at townhalls today, but didn’t repeat his idiotic characterization regarding fear of pulling the plug on granma, which Candy Crowley said on CNN he’s walked back “a little” with reporters.
To CBS’s credit, though, the nightly news did discuss in plain terms the townhall protestors>>>Freedom Works>>>Dick Armey>>>health care lobbying firm connection. I was really surprised she laid in out so plainly.
yep. 10:23 pm.
I wouldn’t want to be that airline right now.
I wanted to come because I now live in PA and in Sestak’s district. No, he’s not Ned Lamont and we aren’t as stoked about this race thanks to Joe’s FISA vote, but I’m going to have to jump in and help. Gotta take down Scrapple. He’s another LIEberman. Got. To. Retire. Him.
which post? I haven’t had time to dig back yet.
Look at the claw. You can see the quick. It should be pinkish, extends about a quarter inch from the toe. Clip just above that. Scratching keeps them down somewhat but you still end up with the needle/razor. I always let Gigi knead on my pants leg. Every pair, long leg and shorts, has a huge hole on the left leg just beneath the pocket.
Best argument for AmTrak that I can think of.
OK….a crazy relationship, huh? And so cute.
Took Amtrak to get here. 7 hours from the Philly Burbs to Pittsburgh. Old beat up train. They save the good ones for the NE corridor routes.
But I’m here . . . didn’t have to deal with the TSA . . . didn’t have to get to airport and wait for 2 hours for nothing . . . LOTS of leg room (sprung for business class—worked out to $3 per hour, worth it) . . you get the drift.
Sean Hannity had terrible lies about the death planners…needing to get rid of people. Complete lies…as he talked about truth being sacred. A sick man..
We clip our kitties claws regularly. When they are young we do it when they are really sleepy. After a while they get used to it.
Wouldn’t it be great if the Pres. made a surprise visit? Like Gore last year. Needs to happen with rebuttals of these lies.
Yep. She really had happy feet, so does Maste, and would just knead and purr. Then rub her face all over my hands, puttin’ her scent on me. The best reason is sometimes they curve back and become ingrown. Then you got problems.
You see me gettin’ on a plane nowadays look for somebody with a pistol cuz I ain’t going voluntarily.
Doubt he would. His Consigliere wants us to STFU. They hate us intertoobs activist hippies—except when they want to visit the ATM.
Need to check my lids for light leaks. All you left wing conspirators in Pittsburgh have a good time. Somebody steer Jane to the train station on the way out.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Dance with the one that brung you, as they say. He certainly needs to figure out for this thing to succeed.
I can’t do all the ferals. They just refuse to be held. Igraine’s too funny. She’ll let me clip her claws but growls the whole time.
earlier today
Eleven dimensional chess, dude!
ah yes.
Problem with the train is that there is only one coming from NY/Philly. It’s the one I was on. And only one going back. I leave Monday at 7 am. Get home around 2:30. Longer to NY and/or DeeCee.
My room mate is a friend of Jay Ackroyd’s. They left NY at 8 pm. Should pull in some time just before dawn I would imagine.
Not many conferences I’d go to and share a room with a stranger. But I’ve done it with FDL folks and it’s always worked out. If you can’t trust liberal bloggers, then there’s no hope left for us.
Sort of like getting government money for those 20 teen girls Bachmann “volunteered” to raise as foster daughters…that was one big re-education camp “effort”, I suspect. I suspect that given Michelle’s incompetence that they kids were simply not very well educated, though. But you never know…kids seem to often be able to overcome the failings of their caretakers. I think of two of Reagan’s kids. Seems her son has perhaps started the journey.
I wonder which taxes she’s refusing to pay while her son works on the government dime? I mean, it’s not his fault that his mom’s a…what’s the word I’m looking for here…a flunky for tired and irrational rhetoric that is weakening the fabric of America’s intellectual constitution.
