One will note that they compare Bush’s actions and words with Hitler’s, not the Bush persona with the Hitler persona. As such, they fall more into the “Never again!” or niemals vergessen! category of reminding us where such actions and words lead.

And it needs to be pointed out again that these were submissions in a contest which were uploaded to a website and were not created by or condoned by MoveOn and which were removed as soon as they came to MoveOn’s attention. As a Jew, I find Rush Limbaugh’s comments extremely inappropriate. I know personally Holocaust survivors who lost many family members because of Hitler. They came to America to start new lives and worked very hard to contribute to the country they love and now call home. It is a grave insult to both the survivors and to those who perished to compare President Obama and the Democrats to a man who killed 13 million Jews, Slavs, Roma, homosexuals, disabled people, simply because they are working to help the millions of people affected by our broken health care system. The Far Right/GOP needs to permanently disown Rush Limbaugh (and Glenn Beck) for making comments like this IMMEDIATELY if they have any decency.

In 2008, Barack Obama got 78% of the Jewish vote, improving on John Kerry’s 74% share in 2004. The GOP once had prominent moderate Republicans in Congress such as Jacob Javits, Ben Gilman, and Warren Rudman, but now the ultra-conservative Eric Cantor is the only Jewish Republican left in either house of Congress. If the Republicans continue as a far-right fringe party that tolerates people like Rush Limbaugh, you will see even fewer Jews identifying with the Republican Party. The GOP seems to have made a choice and sooner or later they will be faced with the consequences.

So how’d they pull it off? Was it Cheney and Rumsfeld hiding bombs in the a/c ducts? Or did they enlist the help of MagnetoMan and LazerBoy?

I see very strong reason to believe that Bush was told that al-Qaeda planned to attack the US in the third quarter of 2009. However, I don’t believe he had particular knowledge of time, place, and manner. If such specific knowledge of the plot had existed within the US government, then Bush’s uselessness wouldn’t have mattered; the institutional responses of the career security establishment would have kicked in to disrupt the plot.

That’s not letting him, or the security establishment, off the hook for their abject failures. The President has some ability to steer the ship of state, and it was within his power to instruct the heads of the alphabet soup agencies to make stopping the planned attack their top priority and get results.
