The NYT is reporting that PhRMA will spend $150 million in advertising to support the White House health care plan in August:
The drug industry has already contributed millions of dollars to advertising campaigns for the health care overhaul through the advocacy groups like Healthy Economies Now and Families USA. It has spent about $1 million on similar advertisements under its own name.
All of the commercials closely echo common Democratic themes about medical care for all, consumer protection and “health insurance reform.” Some supporters of the overhaul have hired public affairs and advertising firms with close ties to the White House and Senate Democrats, including GMMB, which worked on the Obama campaign, and AKPD, which previously included David Axelrod, who is now the president’s top political adviser.
In a statement released by the President on June 20:
I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached between Senator Max Baucus and the nation’s pharmaceutical companies that will bring down health care costs and reduce the price of prescription drugs for millions of America’s seniors. As part of the health reform legislation that I expect Congress to enact this year, pharmaceutical companies will extend discounts on prescription drugs to millions of seniors who currently are subjected to crushing out-of-pocket expenses when the yearly amounts they pay for medication fall within the doughnut hole any payments by seniors not covered by Medicare that fall between $2700 and $6153.75 per year.
Former Blue Dog Billy Tauzin, who now heads PhRMA, told the New York Times it was a "rock solid deal." Jim "Stickboy" Messina (Obama’s "Josh Lyman") "confirmed Mr. Tauzin’s account of the deal in an e-mail message" to the NYT.
McJoan asked the other day if Baucus is writing the White House’s health care bill. I don’t think there is any question that he is, that Tauzin knows he is, and that the idea that he’s "holding up" the White House is not grounded in reality. And that the deal cuts the legs out from underneath Jeff Merkeley, who was trying to negotiate for $63 billion in rebates for drugs provided under Medicare.
The only question is how much the Democrats got in exchange for gutting the government’s ability to control health care costs.
During the campaign, this was Obama’s position:
Obama will allow Americans to buy their medicines from other developed countries if the drugs are safe and prices are lower outside the U.S. Obama will also repeal the ban that prevents the government from negotiating with drug companies, which could result in savings as high as $30 billion.
It no longer appears on the health care page at mybarackobama.com.
But, let’s do the math. In ten years, $30 billion a year would mean $300 billion in savings. The deal cut by the White House is for $80 billion in savings. So the pharmaceutical industry gets to keep $220 billion for the low low price of $150 million in August to pass health care reform so Rahm Emanual won’t be 13-1.
A hundred fifty million for two hundred twenty billion in savings: an excellent return on investment by anyone’s standards.

Does this $150mil in August mean the whole pre-recess deadline talk was smoke?
You are forget that roughly 40 billion over ten years from allowing drug reimportation.
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/54x…..nDrugs.pdf
And another roughly 20 billion over ten years for taxing or ending the tax free status of drug direct to consumer advertising.
And that $80 billion in savings is split between the government and the seniors so it is only about $50 billion in savings for the government.
Hmmm. Good question.
If you are going to roll out a product it must start in August from a marketing point of view?
Where have I heard that reasoning before?/s
The math is pretty easy, yes? I mean, like, even I could follow it. Jeez. This just gets more discouraging every day.
Maybe Tauzin could be persuaded to become the new head of the Federal Reserve when Bernanke’s term is up.
Obamacare is turning into Romneycare – maybe not as good. Today the NYT is endorsing the “Massachusetts Model” for health care reform:

As Frank Rich says today, are we being punk’d?
Jane: I caught the interview with Ian Masters this afternoon. It was very good. I have long thought “BB” to be one of the best news shows on the air – anywhere. Brava!
What does having 12 years for copyright protection earn for pharma?
I hadn’t heard about what amounts to a “covenant not to compete” deal that BO is cutting with big pharma. Egregious and insulting on many levels.
I like Ian a lot. He’s very smart and he manages to use his intelligence to explore subjects without choking the life out of them. Always enjoy doing his show.
Important news in on “Death Panels”.

Again, his show has been sort of a “do not miss” broadcast to me for years. He’s very good. Sort of o/t, but did the LA gig you did with him a few weeks back get recorded? I’d be most interested in listening to it. Thx.
I think we already know the answer to that. More will die and the healthcare industry will continue to drag the economy down. Bet Obama is already talking to publishers about writing a book on his Presidency. For a title how about “Grand Delusion”.
While Tauzin was one of the founders of the Blue Dogs, he quickly joined the Republicans in 1995.
It is also important to remember this about him. From my Bush scandals list:
A heck of a lot of profit money and lost med saving for patients. Another example of the farce of HRC.
Frank Rich is asking today if Obama is “punking” us. I do believe that is the case, on virtually every issue I care about and I’m really, really p….d
about it.
Having a hard time feeling blessings for even friends in the midst of anger over my “enemies”
Time to think about a Democratic challenger to Obama. Bernie Sanders comes to mind. There seems be a sense that populism has legs and rather than a neo-fascist populism how about we try a little progressive populism?
Obama will allow Americans to buy their medicines from other developed countries if the drugs are safe and prices are lower outside the U.S. Obama will also repeal the ban that prevents the government from negotiating with drug companies, which could result in savings as high as $30 billion.
that actually still up at mybarackob…
http://www.barackobama.com/iss…..mpaign.php
And don’t forget that Baucus had a big part in getting the donut hole in place… and there’s Obama praising him for helping to eliminate it….
I feel like we’ve all been led down the rabbit hole.
This is so bad it is hard to be imagined.

sorry for the double post–got confused.
I understand that is the campaign side of the site, but it is there. no need to go to wikipedia.
the healthcare ISSue site is pretty much blank except for the three platitudes
affordable
choice
universal
Is Rahm the new Cheney? Pulling the strings behind corporate issues while Obama deals with other stuff?
How can this be happening?
We should be the ones screaming at the fucking townhall meetings… or perhaps screaming on the steps of “Capital Hill”…. note intentional change in spelling.
The Obama smoke and mirrors site says nothing about repealing the ban on the government negotiating with drug companies. I guess the negotiating is already done and big pharma won, the American people, not so much.
The politicians get their cut, however meager. The government threatened Microsoft with anti-trust laws until it was explained to Gates that he needed to start making contributions, to both parties.

O.K.. The U.S. has elected it’s first black president. Been there done that. Now, in 2012 let America elect a real fighter and progressive for the American people. Bernie Sanders.
If we don’t get real reform, I’m going to write my congresscritter and ask that he vote against it.
I don’t care about the insurance companies and big Pharma: they’re ass-deep in money, and they really have no need to raise prices.
I do care about the rest of us: we get stuck with their pricing, and now we’re going to get stuck with a plan that doesn’t give us viable alternatives.
Yeah, well it seems Baucus has already made the deal with the insurance companies. See this article from Business Week (August 6)
The Health Insurers Have Already Won
How UnitedHealth and rival carriers, maneuvering behind the scenes in Washington, shaped health-care reform for their own benefit

Billy Tauzin has some further stink about him. He was involved in the Westar Energy scandal in Kansas some years back.
http://www.bizjournals.com/kan…..ily30.html
Among those watching closely is the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, which has called for federal investigations into whether Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas; Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La.; or Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, violated congressional ethics rules or federal bribery statutes in connection with their activities on behalf of Westar during 2002.
As for Sanders, how about Kucinich getting in there somehow? Love that little rascal, especially when he whacked that lying doctor Gratzer ( ? ) in the House hearing.
.
Anything that involves the traitor emanuel always has a heaping helping of deceit. The idea that the administration needs phrma lobbying to help them sell healthcare reform to the american people is absurd. The American people already want the public option by a 3 to 1 margin and the ramhbama team and the majority of the other corporate sell-outs on capitol hill could care less. They don’t give a fuck what we think and it is very likely that we will not get what 75% of the public wants. This is is primarily a ploy to enrich the insiders in the party via this phrma “campaign” for healthcare reform. The idea that you need phrma to rally the populace to support healthcare reform is nonsense and is just another sign of contempt and disrespect that the traitors on capitol hill have for the american people.
DISGUSTING!!!!!!!
Z
We on the left have been spelling it all wrong!
It’s publicity plan, not public plan.
How can this be happening? BECOZ OBAMA WANTS IT TO HAPPEN! He hired the scumbag. emanuel is well-known as the dlc’s master of deceit who keeps the campaign money rolling in by serving big business interests while providing political cover to the dems. It’s difficult to fathom that obama somehow didn’t know who he was hiring when they both served the same state.
Z
Let’s not be too hard on Rahmbo. I’m sure that the deal he cut with big pharma includes free Vaseline for the constituents. What? It doesn’t? Not even a piece of rope to bite on? I stand corrected.
“It’s publicity plan, not public plan.”
Ahh…Now everything is starting to make sense… Good catch.
Priceless!
BO has a big political juggernaut working on his behalf. I fear that challenging him would only serve to split the vote. On the other hand, Palin-Bachmann in 2012. Any way you slice this thing, it’s scary as hell…
Speaking of voting blocs, did anyone see George Lopez last night? He identified Kay Bailey Hutchison and John McCain by name (regarding their votes against Sotamayor) and said, “…F you putos.” It was a nice moment, especially in light of the fact that there were 14,000 in the arena, and an international television viewing audience. I’m sure the senators’ phones have been ringing on that one. Ha!

The Reincarnated Robert McNamara again rules the White House and these two corporate drones will be remembered will equal contempt.
Corporate Slavery is A Crime Against Humanity.
So is it time to run a negative ad against Obama the same way we are against the Blue Dogs? This whole big pharma deal looks like a pretty big fat easy target to hit them on. Maybe that way we can get their attention and let them know that it’s good legislation that matters, not legislative “victories”. If we don’t stand up for ourselves now when the hell will we? What would also make it effective is that I’m pretty sure they don’t think we have the guts to do it, so it might catch them off guard.
The problem I see is that such a tactic could play into the hands of the wingnuts. “See? We here at Fox News told you so…”
While BO is refreshing as compared to Bush, he is, nonetheless, becoming a major disappointment on any number of fronts. Change we can believe in:
http://www.salon.com/comics/to…..index.html
Nicely stated.
I’m more concerned about enacting progressive legislation than protecting BO.
Must have missed this deal being done on C-SPAN. Anyone know when I can catch a re-run?
I hear you. The more progressive, the better. That’s why progressives must hold these lame-ass Demo’s accountable for their actions. No sane legislation, no reelections. No exceptions.
Suck it, Rahm
You think that the lobbyists are not above using psy-ops to try to discourage the activists pushing for real healthcare reform?
And do you really think that Obama would veto a bill from Congress that was either single payer or had negotiated rates in it?
What would you do to have Harry and Louise happy talking about healthcare reform instead of savaging it?
And what exactly did he promise the AMA doctors?
Only AHIP is the odd man out at this point. And you see what a firestorm they’ve generated.
The big rock in the road is not the Obama administration; it is the Democratic Congress and especially the members that United Healthcare and other lobbyists have cultivated. It’s not ideological; there are Blue Dogs standing up in support of a public option. It’s about who is on the take in Congress.
Tauzin going to the New York Times was a shot across the bow because the public option and real rate reform on pharmaceuticals was beginning to get just a little smidgen of traction in the House.
The immediate issue for progressives is getting Congress to make healthcare reform real, either through single-payer or a public option.
Let’s not get distracted here.
The after we accomplish that (or not) we can go back and take names of who sold out. It’s not over until it’s over, and it’s not over yet.
Good God this is making me ill. I just got off the phone with my aged mother who lives in Texas, and she was railing on about how the new health care system was going to pay for sex-change operations.
I said, well, I don’t know if that is true, but even if it is, just how many people do you think want sex-change operations?
Then she went on about how they are going to euthenise old people. I tried to explain to her that the living will has been around for 20 years, and it is about the care you wish to receive when you are critically ill.
All she could say was, “haven’t you seen the news?”
Good Fucking Deep Fried Baby Jesus Christ on a Stick.
I was able to make some headway with her when I explained that her Medicare was free to her as she was over 65, she said, “No it is not, I pay for it every month, they take it out of my check.
The only way I was able to get any indignation out of her was to mention that Medicare pays for boner pills.
I also got her to agree that insurance companies are denying benefits based on pre-existing conditions.
How can we possibly pass a decent heath care bill in the country when this is the sort of ignorance that people like my mom have because they only get their news from TV. She doesn’t care enough about the process to become well informed, but she will parrot the talking points.
My mom is not stupid, she is just easily led.
Dunno, I’ll find out.
Why do I always start singing Cabaret and that Money song when I see pics of Rahm Emmanuel?
The missed opportunities of the first six months of the Obama administration are absolutely staggering. The moment was there for transformation, and they blew it. Or did they? Unable to face the political risk of doing the right thing with the wars, the financial system, health care, or investing in a new America, they seem to be going the same old thing, but the same old thing isn’t viable… In other words, in some ways, the wingut crazies are right, they just have their reasoning backwards. The Democrats may very well have sealed the doom of the old order, in a sense: not by being “radical,” but by being too fearful and conventional.
Real progressive policies might actually have slowed our evolution, in other words. :-) That’s not going to happen, though, so hang onto your hats.
Are you kidding me? The only possible person who could take on Obama in 2012 — and WIN — would be Howard Dean, who, of course, if hadn’t been sabotaged by Bill Clinton & DLC would have won the presidency in 2004 and most of the past 5 years would be moot. The only authentic leader at a national level in the United States who stands for, and would deliver, progress.
I don’t need change. I need progress.
