Pete King (R-NY3) is my Representative to Congress. I live in his district. I am an active, reasonably well informed member of my community. I belong to civic organizations. I am active in the PTA and the HS Booster Club. I go to meetings. I teach continuing legal education classes to other lawyers on how to do election monitoring. I do community outreach public speaking for my local bar association.

I get out there among my neighbors.

I talk to them, and know what’s going on with them.

Evidently Pete King does not. Incredibly he said this today on MSNBC: “When you ask the American people what’s the most important issue to them, health care reform does not rank high.”

What?

National

First of all, let’s talk about "the American People" as a whole and what they think. A Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll conducted July 7-14, 2009, 56% of those surveyed said given the serious economic problems facing the country it is more important than ever to take on health care reform now.

New York State

Let’s bring things a little closer to home and talk about NY State where:

  • 1,190 residents of New York are losing health insurance every day, in New York there has been a 10 percent increase in the uninsured rate since 2007.
  • 3,090,000 are uninsured today in New York. The average family premium in New York costs $800 more because our system fails to cover everyone.
  • Our broken health insurance system will cost the New York economy as much as $14.7 billion this year in productivity losses due to the uninsured.

Long Island

Or what about what happens here on Long Island?

Health care reform is a priority project of, inter alia, the Long Island Progressive Coalition, Yes We can Long Island, and there is a Long Island Coalition for a comprehensive health plan.

Newsday supports it, The Long Island Press reports that polling of small business owners on Long Island show that they are in favor of universal healthcare, heck, even Long Island Business news has a post up on its blog urging universal healthcare.

So, who the hell has Peter King been talking to that gave him the idea that health care reform is not an important priority? Not me, not my neighbors, not my fellow small business owners.

I live in NY3, and I can tell you for a fact: Health care reform is a critical priority for Long Islanders and for all Americans. Pete, if you want to talk about this, anytime at all, give me a call.

Really.
