“Progressive Block” Strategy: Is It Really Happening?

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday July 8, 2009 7:04 am

John Conyers has been a healthcare hero for his entire career.  He has asked NYCEve and me to speak before Democratic House and staff members today at 3pm on the Hill.  I’ll be talking about the whip count project because people here got on the phones and let their members of Congress know that health care is something that is important to them, an fiery rhetoric that ultimately succumbs to the demands of a political machine just won’t cut it this time.

Don’t be bought off with convincing smoke signals. Keep those calls coming, because they’re working.

Benedict’s Challenging Words to Congress and the World: Aid the Poor

By: Peterr Wednesday July 8, 2009 6:05 am

Roman Catholic members of Congress in both parties may want to check out the new papal encyclical. Republicans in particular may be surprised to learn that there’s more to charity than giving out scraps — it’s about ruling with justice. Minority Leader Boehner might want to take notes.

Late Night: Sarah Palin–GOP WunderBoner, Cash Cow? Or Both?

By: Lisa Derrick Tuesday July 7, 2009 8:00 pm

Okay, yes I am being sexist. And If a guy wrote the same headline, I would still laugh. Maybe that’s why some conservative guy said I looked liked “one of those bloodsucking vampires” in a comment on some blog. All the grrls in the Microwave Coven laughed at that one.

AGAG To Teach Political Science Fiction At Texas Tech

By: Eli Tuesday July 7, 2009 6:01 pm

Will Gonzo teach his students useful techniques for subverting democracy and the rule of law, or will he just spend 3-4 hours a week telling them that he doesn’t remember anything? Will his exams include a True/False/I Don’t Recall section? Will students be graded on how much course material they can forget?

By: Marisa McNee Tuesday July 7, 2009 5:30 pm

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday ordered Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) to drop a proposal to tax health benefits and stop chasing Republican votes on a massive health care reform bill.

Rep. Grijalva Alarmed by Rahm: “Trigger” is a “Non-Starter”

By: Gregg Levine Tuesday July 7, 2009 5:00 pm

In a letter released this afternoon, Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) expressed “alarm” and “dismay” at the remarks by Rahm Emanuel, published in the Wall Street Journal, that signaled an openness to a “trigger” that would indefinitely delay implementation of a public option in any health care overhaul.

Without Health Care, My Patients Will Die: Please Don’t Sacrifice Them for Single Payer

By: Kirk James Murphy, M.D. Tuesday July 7, 2009 4:00 pm

We activists have years to defeat corporatism: single payer is one front in that very long war. Many of the indigent patients I’ve seen these last years – like many of the other 40 million uninsured Americans – will perish during that long war. With a robust public option this year, most of these patients will survive.
