It’s been weirdly cool here in Denver. And I had the most unusual experience yesterday.
I caught video of a Harris Hawk in my back yard (I live in the densest part of Denver next to Downtown) and anyway that fella had snagged a sparrow and was eating it on my fence.
It was cool to have the hawk so near in our urban setting but was actually a bit gruesome. I haven’t been able to shake the image.
I’m pleased tonight. The guy in the Youtube is a friend of mine, the guy who taught me slide guitar. He’s a genius, and he’s been very good to me over the years, pimped the hell out of the record I made last year.
I’m always glad to return the favor of the pimpage.
BTW, thanks so much for convincing me to come to the meetup. Was a good time. :-D
Suz & Pups start thinking about the second weekend in October For the BBQ Meetup!!
That would be the tenth!! And remember it will be a BBQ themed Meetup!!
That vid is very well done. I like the part writing/arrangement for all the parts. Did Lee Roy do that or is it one of those organic band things. Cause either way it’s very nicely produced.
good evening…. it is cooler today….. around 101…. sister is still here (long story). had forgotten how sharp her voice is…..
Suz I know this is old news but I was admitted to the hospital this last weekend. unstable walk, dehydration, my labs were messed up and all I wanted to do is sleep….
Nah no whole pig… although if I was raising them I would!!.. Not sure what I will BBQ but I will be firing up the western BBQ… takes hours to get it going correctly… I do have lots of Apple wood and Almond… should work well for what ever the Pups bring to cook… Should be good eating that day!!
Nahant, I’ll probably do the stuff I’m doing in my smoker. I’m deep into barbecue and the ritual itself is part of the process for me. I figure if I start the fire at 0530, they’ll be done by 1230 or 1300. I might even get really daring and make my own sauce!
Today I learnt that Mike Seeger died . . . at age 76. And Pops Seegar is 92 I think, and that’s just hard for a pop’s to see his son die, ’specially at them ages . . . and well, they BOTH were hosses beyond the musics.
Bless them both, if ya can Pups, they were majestic on protest movements long before many of us opened up our eyes.
And then, I learnt, that a guy who was a camp fest legend, whom I visited a lot this past 5 years at a fest or so, had passed . . . . and turns out he was married 50 years and more, and folks knew him and his from music, festing, hosting, camping and more, for 40 years or more.
So, I lost a few today, ya know?
A couple who meant a lot to me in the BIG picture, and in the local and smaller picture.
And they were heroes, in their own ways. And they never turned a person away, either of them.
And they fought the good fight on the union lines, on the music lines, in the campgrounds, and for their families and for their fans and for their friends and fest mates.
There’s only one way to prep a whole pig. You need an imu, basalt rock, sea salt, banana stumps, banana leaves, and ti leaves. You also need a pig and a bunch of keawe wood to heat the imu. And a day for the pig to cook.
My rub is real simple – chipotle seasoning, black pepper and a little cayenne. I don’t think spares need a lot of seasoning.
Sauce, I’m a little lazy about. OT’s or Bone-Suckin hot are pretty good but I’ll see what I can some up with. I’ll have to make two versions, one for most everyone else and one for me and my lead-lined stomach!
I have to work really hard on the hydration, back on 4mg of steroids daily, the new tumor in my hip joint has started hurting and taking a pain pill before bed….. tylenol works otherwise. I also am on a anti-depressant to help with the side effects of the steroids…….
A lot of his records are out of print (he’s been making them since 1990) but his last two are generally still available. You can find most on Ebay, and sometimes Amazon.
Oh come on… I BBQ everything from beef, chicken, turkey, fish, lamb and of course da pork!! It all depends on what I am in the mood for…. and of course there is the smoker… What can I say I love to cook and eat!!
I’m a picker of 45 years. My main weapons of choice are a Tele for fretted stuff, a Strat for slide. Only acoustic I have is a Baby Taylor, I’m mostly an electric guy. Also have a second Tele, a Les Paul Junior (P90s) and a RI Danelectro Baritone.
My amps are all clones of ‘59 Fenders – A Champ, a Deluxe and a Super. I built the Champ and the Super myself. The Deluxe was made for me by a guy in Nashville.
The thing about Q is finding what you like and how to cook it. I like my ribs Memphis style, so I fix ‘em that way. Perfecting a Memphis dry rub took some research and testing. But that’s the best part.
i know. but it was so hot and i had dang near every bit of space filled already. as it was, parts of my plants got burned by the heat but seem to be doing ok now.
i had my hair cut short yesterday. it looks so much better – kinda like jamie lee curtis’ in those activia yogurt commercials. shudda done it before the meetup instead of after.
Elvin was sooooo da man long ago, from Butterfield to his shows with the band (Jo Baker was THE BEST!) at Fillmore and Winterland . . . nice hit, Emerson . . . bless ya . . .
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MAH BUDDY! THANKS SUZ!
He’s re-doing his web site and there’s just a placeholder there right now, but there’s more music at his MySpace.

I’m sluicing down my patio to soak up some of the heat.

FWDiva
Fabulous weather here in the land of Cleve. I can’t believe how mild it is this summer.
Well, no interview no job forsure. Hang in there, it will get better.
Suz, babe!
Missed thersday – will be great am reading.
Hey Nahant, how’s it goin?
Doin great and you??
Hey guys! I did 4.5 miles today. My dawgs are killing me. My feet, too.
It’s been weirdly cool here in Denver. And I had the most unusual experience yesterday.
I caught video of a Harris Hawk in my back yard (I live in the densest part of Denver next to Downtown) and anyway that fella had snagged a sparrow and was eating it on my fence.

Just because I like it…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQgp5CL0qO8
That’s a sweet band, strings and a double trap set, wow. Do you know where that venue is?
Thanks. I really appreciate the encouragement.
Good on ya, Mary.
I need to get on it, but _after_ this @#$! heatwave!
FWDiva
I think I might head off to bed. I am going to get up early. Good night.
in case ya’ll couldn’t tell, thatguy sent me this video as a possible late late nite selection.
KCD: The venue was the Paramount Theater in Austin, TX.
Lee Roy is one of the unsung greats. But Suz knew about him before she met me, so she knows the good ones. :-D
Lee Roy is just plain bad ASS.
g’nite mary
HEE HEE HEE. I do celebrate the music that moves mah soul, don’t i?
G’night Mary
That vid is very well done. I like the part writing/arrangement for all the parts. Did Lee Roy do that or is it one of those organic band things. Cause either way it’s very nicely produced.

Yep. That’s hog killin’ season — are you gonna do a whole pig?
(here at BBQ central, we have VIEWS)
Get well soon, Katy.
nuttin’ wrong wit dat!
FWDiva
Lee Roy seems to be carrying quite a bit of filthy in that vid. Well done! Hey Suz!
I’m feeling better than months…… doing laundry, cleaning and dusting (lots of dust)……
sorry pups – was distracted shortly after this post went up and didn’t get a chance to say hey to each of ya when ya came in.
hey
I donno if he’s doing a whole pig but I’m doing two slabs of spares for that one and if I get really into it, I might do a brisket or a prime rib.
everything back in whack and not messed up now?
Carrying filthy? That’s a new one on me!
Oh, honey. Are you feeling any better?
Is that why your sis is visiting?
Gosh, hope you’re getting plenty of rest.
FWDiva
Ummm. You went to the hospital to sleep? My experience is that nobody gets any rest in a hospital, especially not the patients.
I hope all is well now, katy.
Good! I’m gonna to watch ND-USC in South Bend Oct. 17-but the 10th looks good nahant/
Hey, back and Hey to the pets!
FWDiva
Sounds like the big Brick BBQ will be just what you need!! Or maybe the smoker!!
Nahant, I’ll probably do the stuff I’m doing in my smoker. I’m deep into barbecue and the ritual itself is part of the process for me. I figure if I start the fire at 0530, they’ll be done by 1230 or 1300. I might even get really daring and make my own sauce!
Some things just fit. But it’s a good thing, ThatGuy!
On my mind?
Your cut cuts to it . . .
Today I learnt that Mike Seeger died . . . at age 76. And Pops Seegar is 92 I think, and that’s just hard for a pop’s to see his son die, ’specially at them ages . . . and well, they BOTH were hosses beyond the musics.

Damn, I wish I could die like that.

17TH is out of the question.. it will be our 18th anniversary and we plan to spend it just J and Me!!
We never hit 90F today . . . And the breezes, them delta breezes, are kewler n ice cubes tonite, again.
Been 3 nights now . . . and Portland is dyin with heat we should be getting . . .

(((larue)))
Oh come on you have to make your own sauce… I mean WTF you have to make your own sauce, rub or what ever!!
Sounds like a little piece of Aloha to me!
FWDiva
Hey ThatGuy, I like him!
Thanks Suz, good day here, raining now, hugs to everyone
Wow, I had not heard that. Dang, I’m a Seeger boy for a long time. I hate hearing that for the old man. Damn.
we could use some rain here margot. do ya mind sharing?
Sounds like a minor league baseball joke in the Dog Daze . .
WOOF!
Ya gotta admit, this is mild, mild, mild for way too long now . . . sure we had a few dayze of 100F, but not many.
And NONE at 110F or more, much less DAZE ON END!!!
Tis a gift . . . gimple sifts . . . that’s Latin for Simple Gifts . . .*G*
ribs sound great.
(we don’t acknowledge Q lessen it’s pig — a bit of local chauvinism just for the hell of it)
My rub is real simple – chipotle seasoning, black pepper and a little cayenne. I don’t think spares need a lot of seasoning.

If it’s not hot, it’s not food. ;)
Mike Seeger… damn. Pete is one of my musical heroes, and Mike’s not far behind his Dad.
Let me recommend the semi-authorized biography of Pete How Can I Keep From Singing.
Dude, you pick? Slide? Bottleneck? Round neck?
Whatcha use electric and acoustic wise?
Me, I’m a squareneck guy, with the RIGHT hubcap, it’s got 6 strings and we use a steel bar!!!
*G*
I have to work really hard on the hydration, back on 4mg of steroids daily, the new tumor in my hip joint has started hurting and taking a pain pill before bed….. tylenol works otherwise. I also am on a anti-depressant to help with the side effects of the steroids…….
Hey all
A lot of his records are out of print (he’s been making them since 1990) but his last two are generally still available. You can find most on Ebay, and sometimes Amazon.
Oh honey. Not at all!
There’s a whole bunch of pitmasters in Memphis who’d take issue with that statement.
Those guys guard their rub recipes as closely as KFC guards the Colonel’s Original Recipe.
hey Chris!
Oh come on… I BBQ everything from beef, chicken, turkey, fish, lamb and of course da pork!! It all depends on what I am in the mood for…. and of course there is the smoker… What can I say I love to cook and eat!!
hydration is tough when its so hot – are ya doing water or are there tricks to getting enough fluids so ya don’t feel like your sloshing when walking?
Hey Larue-you live like that.
Sending a little light your way, Hoss.
Mike Seeger – Walking Boss
Oh how true… Just Like my Chili a batch for everyone and one for those who dare!!! And boy you had be ready if you DARE!!
(((LaRue)))
Hang in there, buddy! Glad you’re hangin’ with us’ns tonight.
FWDiva
Are you in the Carolinas?
Katy our best wishes sweetie… We have you in our thoughts (:>))
I’m a picker of 45 years. My main weapons of choice are a Tele for fretted stuff, a Strat for slide. Only acoustic I have is a Baby Taylor, I’m mostly an electric guy. Also have a second Tele, a Les Paul Junior (P90s) and a RI Danelectro Baritone.
My amps are all clones of ‘59 Fenders – A Champ, a Deluxe and a Super. I built the Champ and the Super myself. The Deluxe was made for me by a guy in Nashville.
The family.
Hey Margot!
I’ve sent some music here tonight, but don’t know if any got through. We love the film Garden State.
Yeah, I know. I don’t compete, I just cook what we like. I never get any complaints about the rub. :-D
ce – the garden state video came through
Hell, we can que AND pick can’t we? *G*
And sip, and sup and pick . . . .
And que . . . *G*
Here’s a linky to my Larue’s Chili Verde . . . I served it at festing camps twice, and fed folks that went nutz on it.
It takes about 4 to 6 daze to do it RIGHT, ya know . . . *G*
Chili Verde!
But ya gotta have something to put in on, so there’s THIS too:
SW Corn Bread!
Wow! I’ve stayed up lots of great nights drinking beer and daubing a pig with vinegar and peppers over a slow wood fire.
Your method is new (and very interesting) to me – time to to consult a dictionary
The thing about Q is finding what you like and how to cook it. I like my ribs Memphis style, so I fix ‘em that way. Perfecting a Memphis dry rub took some research and testing. But that’s the best part.
Danelectro Baritone
What a peculiar guitar.

Hit me hard Kelly . . . . I’ve been a Seegar fan (pops and son) for ever since I was a teen ager of 18 in ‘68.
Mike and Pete . . . spanned early 50’s, (40’s If ya think about Pete) to now.
There, on every front of protest, and music . . . both of them.
Heroes.
they were from draegers – one of the finest bakeries around.
Yep.

i’m so jealous ce. have a wonderful time on your vacation. looking forward to hearing about it upon your return.
Yeah, but their recipes are far better than the Colonel’s POShit jive . . . *G*
Uh I offered ya a small cooler so….
yep. Only issue here is eastern or lexington style.
And whether the banana pudding has whipped cream or meringue. I’m in the meringue and cornstarch pudding corner.

Damn . . . hard to recall him as old as this . . . he was always younger.
But man, what a cut, and what a performance of it . . . he nails it.
Yes, I’m a fan of technique with teh grass, teh blues, teh old timey songs.
Great hit Kelly . . . thanks for that.
Chris, I’ve always wanted to see the Roosevelt house. Hope it’s accessible.
Have a great time.

i had my hair cut short yesterday. it looks so much better – kinda like jamie lee curtis’ in those activia yogurt commercials. shudda done it before the meetup instead of after.
You might know, I’m a big fan of Bloomfield . . .
And Bishop, Butterfield, Naftlin.
And really, there’s so many . . .
More recent decades, Roy Rogers is my hero . . .
But squareneck, my GREATEST hero is St. Mike Auldridge.
Dobro with a feelin and history . . . *G*
see, the nice thing is you can listen to Elvin Bishop from the Bottom Line in 1976 WHILE you’re blogging. I’m doing that myself and it sounds nasty.
“Brownies?”
*blink*
*brownies*
Alice?
Don’t drive and bake!!!!!! ;-)
You bless me, ya know that? *G*
Elvin was sooooo da man long ago, from Butterfield to his shows with the band (Jo Baker was THE BEST!) at Fillmore and Winterland . . . nice hit, Emerson . . . bless ya . . .

Adios Larue
i’m headed out early myself pups. still tired and cranky — thanks for an enjoyable evening.
g’nite all.
Hi Kelly, I just now left a comment on your excellent “Beyond Race” diary.
Hey thanks. I didn’t even Oxwhore it. :)
Hey so since it’s the Seminal now, what’s the new term for Seminal whoring? Wire Whore? Help me out here….
I’ve never understood the notion of “blog whoring.” It seems to me that “blog pimping” would be a more appropriate metaphor.
Nite suz. Thanks.
Bye Suz
G’nite Suzanne.
