If co-ops aren’t (or can’t be) competitive, then people won’t choose them or stick with them long. Having them to offer to the public does no serious harm (at least none I know of). However, insisting on a co-op, but no public option would do very serious harm (I believe).

On an issue of this importance that seems like a reasonable position for Dem leaders to take.

Pres. Obama has said we need “choice”. Co-ops can offer that as well as the ‘public option’. Bill Frist (Republican former Senate leader) said on Charlie Rose’s show (opposite guest Gov. Howard Dean) that we need a market-driven solution. The idea of offering the public other choices such as a co-op or the ‘public option’ IS a market-driven solution. It offers people a choice other than the private insurers.

Likewise, a single-payer state-run universal system (within a state) should be an option for the people of a state who are dissatisfied with the private insurers. I suspect they’ll be okay with the ‘public option’, but if not then they should have some other choice.

Except of course the financing part. That’s not to say that whatever the Finance committee comes up with wouldn’t be looked at. Good ideas are always welcome. The HELP committee isn’t God on Earth either. But yes, the Finance committee’s take on financing is the key part of their work product.

Insofar as a ‘public option’ wouldn’t limit states from creating a single-payer universal plan I can’t imagine how it would prevent them from creating co-ops.

If that’s what they need, then it’s fine. Let’s move forward.

Um - milly, what planet are you from? You sound so uninformed when you blame the “Clinton machine” for this - Clinton was the person that has been trying to pass health care reform since over a decade ago, and one that looked more like a “single payer” plan than anything Obama has suggested. If reform fails this time around - the buck stops with Obama. He had BETTER get a robust public option as a part of his plan - he can do this with or without the Senate.
