Rush Limbaugh called Barack Obama an "angry black man" for the comments he made about the arrest of Henry Gates. Rush says that Obama "plays the race card…prejudging without the fact, based on stereotyping, based on race, based on bias."

I was on MSNBC with Town Hall’s Matt Lewis in a short segment and didn’t get to press Matt on exactly how Rush comes to that conclusion, but let’s recap.

Lynn Sweet asks:

Recently, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. was arrested at his home in Cambridge. What does that incident say to you? And what does it say about race relations in America?

Responding to a question is not as far as I can tell "interjecting race." Obama doesn’t conclude that the officer is guilty of racial profiling, but in answer to the question acknowledges there is "a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcing disproportionately. That’s just a fact."

And the "stupid" comment?

"I think it was a pretty straightforward commentary that you probably don’t need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man who uses a cane, who’s in his own home," Obama said in an interview to air tonight on Nightline.

The one who is bringing a mountain of ugly baggage here is Rush. Obama spoke to the officer, Sergeant Crowley today, and they discussed bringing Henry Gates to the White House and all of them having beer. He’s personally setting an example on how to elevate the debate and move race relations forward in this country.

Rush is throwing gasoline on the situation and trying to drag everyone back to the Bull Connor glory days.
