Monday, Co-President Chuck Grassley told Andrea Mitchell that his discussions on health care with Co-President Baucus was the only game in town. Nothing accomplished by the Senate HELP Committee matters. And as for the House bill, everything they proposed is "off the table." Chuck and Co-Prez Max have that phrase down.
I’ve been watching the news stories all day, and I’ve yet to find a single statement by any Democratic leader to challenge Grassley’s view. Oh, Speaker Pelosi insists they’re still on track, and Harry Reid says we’re still following some schedule. But it is startling that neither Reid nor Durbin, Pelosi or Hoyer, seems offended by President Grassley’s arrogant assertion that he and Co-President Baucus will unilaterally define health care reform, so only their views matter.
I would have thought that the role of the Senate Finance Committee was to figure out how to finance necessary health care reforms in a responsible fashion. It wasn’t their job to make the major "policy" calls about what reform entails. That’s the job of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committtee, and the respective House Committees, and they’ve already defined what they want and are in basic agreement.
No, Finance’s job was to look at the range of financing options — some from Tax A, some from Tax B, a bit from Tax C, plus Savings X, Savings Y, etc. — and then choose. Put together a package that’s fair and that does the job. But apparently, the entire Congressional leadership is waiting for President Baucus and President Grassley to tell them what the substance of reform will be.
So, what have the two Co-Presidents produced so far? Zero. Nada. Zilch. Unless you count delay.
Despite their dismal failures and delays that are putting reform in serious risk, the Demoratic leaders areallowing these arrogant Co-Presidents, all by themselves, to decide whether we can have reform at all, whether reform will create meaningful competition for insurance companies or not, whether individuals or employers will have to do anything, whether reforms will be done nationally or be handed to such 3rd world states as Louisiana, Arkansas and Alaska, and whether there will or will not be an institution with authority to examine, recommend and enforce ways to "bend the curve" of exploding health care costs.
How did it come to pass that the country has left 1/6 of the US economy in the hands of these two people? When did we elect them as Co-Presidents?
I suppose a co-presidency with no other meaningful legislative branch is one way to organize a government. But I just wish they’d told us how this works in grade school. Those of us in the rest of the country could have avoided the trouble of voting. And those 530 or so other chumps in Congress would have known not to waste their time or ours.
——-
Update: Tonight, the man whom the nation’s crazies — that’s most of the Republican Party these days and much of the media — think is not President held a press conference. At least the press addressed him as "Mr. President" and didn’t call him names like half the clowns on cable news do.
The President addressed — no, surrounded, analyzed, explored, turned in-side-out, every question. He defended health reform as necessary and correctly tied it to bringing down budget deficits and avoiding bankruptcies. He talked about how much progress has been made, and the broad scope of agreements.
But he also seemed to focus a couple of times on making the insurance companies the villains — near the end he spoke of their record profits at a time of rising premiums and used that to defend the need for the public plan, to keep them honest. And he repeated some of the stories he hears — "my health coverage is great," he said, but a lot of people are having problems. That was a good response.
He’s still praising Grassley, Snowe, and others on Finance, even though they’ve produced nothing and could force him to retreat on major elements of the reforms he described tonight. I didn’t hear him putting any pressure on them to propose real reform, and that continues to be a problem, in my view.

co EMPERORS not prezzies
Vice President Ross will be pissed when he learns you left him out of the title. *s*
Grassley is following orders from Bill Kristol. That Obama singled him out tonight for being constructive and providing real solutions is evidence of that: Obama knows what Grassley’s up to, and he’s tired of watching Max Baucus hide behind Grassley’s skirts.
These guys are in charge of FINANCE, not HEALTH. And you rightly called them out on just that, Mr Crow.
May I take this opportunity to say that Howard Fineman is being an absolute Monday-Morning Quarterback jackass tonight on Rachel at the moment?
‘Course – he tends to do that whenever *not* on Olbermann.
Abolish the Senate.
I thought that was his one and only job. All I ever see him doing.
Now on to Gibbs, the propagandist in chief.
Press Sec Gibbs now on Rachel Maddow
I’m still bitter that Baucus completely denied any Single Payer advocates a seat at the table and even had the gall to say it was off the table…! Can you say Primary his arse…?
The Gates issue is such a diversion and they all seem to want to go there.
Going home to town hall meetings was not much fun for him. I bet he doesn’t have ANY scheduled for August.
Mrs. Greenspan and Mr. Grassley and all their ilk. Rotten vegetables. Some assembly required.
Podium-side chat?
Obama did the same in his meetings.
You can’t expect someone to support something that their million dollar lobby pays them to shoot down.
He’s tone deaf, eh? Isn’t he one of the biggest recipients of Big Pharma’s largesse too…? Maybe he’s not totally tone deaf…
They are trying to sell us the killing of us. It’s amazing.
I kinda predicted that @#293, last thread.
Would have been a good time for a re-iteration of the “I try to not open my mouth until I know exactly what I’m talking about” line….
oh well – we never asked for an automaton….
The ONLY positive takeaway from the presser which just ended is the hope that Obama WILL veto anything he’s sent that doesn’t have a robust public option, sans state or fed co-ops which will NOT pressure the insurance industry.
Most of the questions were crap, and Obama ducked around any meat that WAS strewn among them.
We’ll see. He didn’t really answer much of details to give any sense of real hope of real reform, other than his professing to not pass bad reform.
We’ll see.
How true… Sad, but, true…!
Was it Chuck Todd who asked how many millions uninsured will you find acceptable after all is said and done?
Seems to me that all the media-nettes went to lunch with the lobbyists to get their questions and the appropriate language. I guess they all hang at Dana Bash’s house after work.
Sooo…having missed the live press conference, I went to MSNBC online. Good news!! They have a Michael Jackson story right up top, next to Obama. And, with a tip o’ the hat to the old, old SNL, it appears that Michael Jackson is still dead. Tacky of me, but . . . oh, you know.
his contributes from the HC industry are 2x what he gets from constituents. There are several messages there.
Elizabeth Edwards coming up on Rachel.
Exactly, and ain’t it sad that For-Profit orgs are even running the show in the first place…!
It is sad that we elect these bastards to represent us…. Seems they are doing anything but.
LOL, Mon!
I said that on the last thread at 6:10pm (PDT).
Glad I’m not the only one who noticed!
FunnyWheelieDiva
elections are just a formality.
elections are for sissies. It’s about control and the benjamins.
Pretty discouraging.
Why? Oh, wait. Health care . . . duh . . .
It will be that way unless/until public finance of elections happens. I think it’s time for the unemployment rate in the lobby industry to explode.
… it appears that Michael Jackson is still dead. Tacky of me, but . . . oh, you know.
s’okay – there came a time where I was sure that he was truly alive.
Jo Fish @21 – Seems to me that all the media-nettes went to lunch with the lobbyists to get their questions and the appropriate language.
what the heck was that movie where the old politician was explaining to the new pol – “Son – if you can’t take their money, drink their liquor, and then vote against them – you’re in the wrong business…”(?)
ahh – good times…
been writing that comment with some regularity on these pages for about 4 years now. Don’t see it happening in my lifetime.
Obama really committed an error in his answer to the Gates question.
Substantively, I agree with his answer. But, it will be the news tomorrow, as opposed to what he said about health care. Worse, calling the police stupid, even when they are, is not smart politics. His opponents will be all over this for days.
Charlie Wilson’s War, I think.
Anyone remember the Last Hurrah? Paid plastic facade beats old time pol. One of the early ones and good ones.
Back, all those eons ago, when hospitals began to advertise, my mother, a retired RN, shook her head and muttered darkly whenever one came on. She’s very capitalist, very Republican, but her constant refrain was hospitals shouldn’t advertise, they shouldn’t be for-profit institutions.
Of course, what we saw in those early days was nuthin’.
Imagine, I’m old enough to remember when hospitals and doctors advertising was considered unethical.
It is sad that we elect these bastards to represent us….
I quibbled with someone about this the other day – the idea that we’re electing fucking *anyone* to represent *US* is, to reluctantly quote Alberto Gonzales – “quaint”.
We passed a public financing of elections bill here in Hawaii county, unfortunately, they’re now experiencing cold feet and are pulling out all the stops in delaying the implementation of it… The main reason cited is the hard economic times… Which is utter BS because the funding has already been allocated…!
No doubt, but they would’ve been all over anything he could have said. The actual words and the actual meaning are unimportant if someone can do a “Frank Lutz” word-twist on it. And it’s the twisted version that will go viral. I’m glad he said it.
Probably not. California put a public finance iniative up a few years ago. The lobbyist spent millions scaring people and it was promptly shot down. I guess ignorance is bliss…..
Agreed…
Rachel and Howard seem to think President Obama should have told more stories about the uninsured and their suffering. I’m glad he didn’t. We really needed to hear the type of thing he said, just wish there had been more detail about how much it will cost if nothing is changed. The stories are great and I empathize but his town halls and the commercials cover that real well. He needs to talk to the people who don’t care about anyone but themselves and I think he did a little of that tonight. He’s got to talk more to the what’s in it for me audience.
Now if he’d just talk to the Finance Committee and tell them to get off their butts. They keep saying they’re making progress but if they are, it’s so slow that it’s going backwards. Repubs are getting their way, delay, delay, delay, then go for the kill.
Heh, we said FU and passed it…! Now, the Guv, Linda Lingle is saying we can’t afford it…!
Chuck Todd should be required to submit his questions ahead of time, in the original crayon.
He is a very dim bulb.
We have been fighting for serious health care reform for decades. We are close to getting it. If this undisciplined answer, makes achieving this goal less likely, I am not happy with it.
“It will be his Waterloo”.
yeah – they’re all over trying to get something done.
Is there a white crayon?
I liked Chuck when he was at the Hotline with Steve…! ;-)
And by doing so, his opponents will again prove, just like Senator Demented (R-SC) did, that any arguments they have with Obama’s policies are really about his own personal success. Making this about HIM is what they do when they are losing; dragging Gates in (something very few people know about relative to their knowledge of their own health care) can only help Obama.
His opponents couldn’t do a better job if he had them on his payroll.
Even though people voted for it, Gov. Lingle is trying to figure out how to circumvent the will of the voters? Our tax dollars hard at work.
In an effort to make Michael Jackson somewhat more relevant to the discussion, although he had access to more healthcare than most of us here put together, the quality of that healthcare was really bad. Michael Jackson was many kinds of a train wreck, but like many Americans he died from poor healthcare, unlike most of us he suffered from too much access not too little.
I hope you are right, but I doubt it.
Although I agree with Obama, at this critical time in the political fight of our era, it was an unforced error.
Yep, and Obama’s response about folks who think they’re indestructible give Obama’s answer: since you asked Chuck, only one–you
Normally i would wholeheartedly agree, but if he asked how many millions uninsured will you find acceptable? I say give that man a gold star.
Not only her… The vast majority of State Sens and Reps for the Big Isle, Hi Co, are suddenly fearing for their livelihoods and are pushing her for the delay… Strange, no…? ;-)
I don’t think the answer would have mattered. The question was asked, he had to answer it.
It would have been nice if the Cambridge police hadn’t acted stupidly, but once they did, there was no way Obama wouldn’t be asked about it. If he weaseled it…”I don’t know all the facts yet; we’ll have to wait and see…”, he’d have been accused of weaseling.
If he said the police had no choice, he’d be accused of being self-hating, of betraying his friend, not to mention of betraying much of his work in the Ill. state lege on racial profiling by police.
It was a no-win. He might as well have said the truth. The people and websites who are going to spend all their time on it would not be covering health care (or not well) anyway.
Lynn Sweet has been covering Obama longer than anyone in that room and has proven especially adept in the past at getting him off message. I wonder if she reminds him of his mom?
Teddy, you said that so much better! And more succinctly!
Agree with Teddy … BO prolly has more info on what went down than anyone of us. Expect an apology from the Police Dept. and the arresting Officer in a matter of days.
All those Gooper men are crazy about ABBA and Waterloo.
Exactly, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, etc. reveal the worst of the Murkan system as it stands right now.
Thanks for letting us know….I tried to give you some high points on the previous thread. Sorry they aren’t more clear.
And, from those gaming the system. I grew up with doctors as heroes….guess another dream that’s dead.
The more sophisticated Beltway types think “Waterloo” is a reference to a bidet, which gives new meaning to the term “jet-setter.”
Laura Flanders is blogging live now about the presser http://GRITtv.org/ (Help! I’m the only one there ;-)
Well, It’s been great to take a dip in the Lake during daylight hours…! Sadly, I must head to shore… Aloha Ya’ll…! *g*
Yes, Teddy, in a Perfect World but in Washington nothing is original, not even the crayon. Todd just asked the crayon written questions he was given.
LOL. Oooof.
Cya, CT.
that was a great segment on Rachel interviewing Liz Edwards — she’s a great advocate for reform — why can’t we have her on all the shows, instead of the idiot Steele?
It really is too bad that no one will stand up and ask Grasley to talk with the parents of the little boy that needs Chemo and can’t get it, or to the woman who can’t get coverage for her diabetes, because it’s pre existing. Or those 14,000 people who lost their insurance along with their jobs today. He should tell them about his top rate healthcare, that they somehow don’t deserve. That fucker will never understand what it’s like to be one of his constituents and what real people who actually have to work their ass off for rotten bastards like grassley to have that top rate care.
Not to mention party pooper. *g*
707!
Thank you, ratter! Punaise himself could not have said it any better!
FWDiva
Right up to the Vitter end… “g”
Did Gibbs have a smirk on his mug ? That might indicate whether he really turned off the A/C to make the Presstitutes look as weary as they did …
Who was an asswipe if ever there was one.
High praise but I must bow to the master, Punaise.
If Jane or anyone more familiar with DeeCee knows, is it possible that Obama got a ‘leak’ and toned down his address ?
After the last few days, I thought he would rain thunder tonight but he went mild in tone, although he stuck to his main points even through the questions.
Pelosi says she has the votes in the House
Oh boy, time to turn the tv off – Tweety up: Did the Pres make a compelling case for change?
Petro – what kind of leak? Not sure I understand your question.
Isn’t that the truth? Only the gal from the LA Times asked a question that took some thought on Obama’s part.
dammit – Tweety has 3 lead stories – one of which is the racial-profiling arrest of the professor…
dammit.
RF @64: I had a friend who walked into a restaurant somewhere on Picadilly, and asked – “A loo?”
Maitre’D came back with – “oh – ‘allo ma’am what can I do for you?
good thing she didn’t try it in French…
One of the secrets of a successful presser is to make certain the Washington press corps is well fed before the event. I’m certain the White House provided the requisite trough of baked beans.
Nancy pre-empted the Senate & BlueDogs by stating that she has the votes … is it possible that someone on the Finance Committee also spoke to Obama, perhaps through an intermediary and told him this is getting done by the weekend ?
With that late info., Obama softened his speech to be more congenial. With his language over the past 3-4 days becoming more aggressive, I was surprised that he was so gentle with his tone and choice of words.
Pure speculation on my part …
Isn’t Chucky the worst? He’s aiming for Russert’s old spot, and he’d fit right in.
HA!! Waterloo=bidet!
David Gregory is the worst. NBC might just as well have made Joe the Plumber MTP moderator.
But remember, Petro, this was a press conference. He hasn’t given the SPEECH.
Wheeeee!
Leave Joe alone!
What is daytime “Dr. Nancy” doing on night-time MSNBC?
oil and water.
I dunno who the f**k she is, but she certainly would seem to be a better fit on DoucheBorough than she is on P.M. MSNBC….
Am I the only one who has no idea whatsoever who this woman is?
Good news. You’re not the only one.
Joe the Plumber might occasionally wander off-script…
nuh-uh.
Don’t forget your water-wings and flip-flops!
Heh.
I know that Pressers are more calm than say a speech at the NAACP … I thought the Press was less combative than before, perhaps expecting a thorough beating.
Obama was effective tonight but I thought he would have been blazing with both Guns to regain the advantage in this debate. The fact that he was calmer than I expected, along with Pelosi’s statement leads me to believe that something got leaked to him, that the Senate was near agreement.
EDIT: I’d also like to think The Goatee was less of an ass tonight due to his new name … F*ck Wad
*More Wine*
Hope you’re right!
She used to be the local station’s health expert here in SF. I detest her morning gig on MSNBC. And I turned the station after the presser when I saw that she was the talking head.
I’d said in the liveblogging thread “I can’t wait for Culture of Truth” to translate. We’ll here it is, and it’s a hoot!
Just goes to show how far removed from us all these fuckers really are.
Since I’m down 3 glasses of Chianti, I’d like to add Hatch skipped town to avoid or delay the inevitable …
Salud !
Ah, I see now. Could be.
That seemed to be Dr. Nancy’s line – he should’ve been more forceful.
uh-oh, epu’d already?
F. Wadd’s big question (comment, really) was an effort to insulate his party, the Republicans from any responsibility for anything bad that may happen, did happen or will happen in the future.
Dr Nancy plays a doctor on teevee.
I thought she was a satirical chracter when I saw her the first time.
God,what an annoying—-
How abourt starting off health care reform by cancelling her show?
Or Liz Cheney. Why do these cable types love her so much?
