Mornin’, BT, pups

I’m pleased that health care legislation has been slowed. With the August recess right around the corner we’ll have a month to be in our congressmoron’s faces at the local level. You don’t have to be a well heeled lobbyist to get into local offices. With a little help from online organizing, hint hint, we could flood local offices with single payer supporters.

More generally, progressives are doing very well among almost all growing demographic groups, while conservatives are retaining strength only where the country is stagnating or declining.

R stands for Rust Belt and Republican.

What is it with these fuckin’ Rethugs and concealed weapons? Most of these clowns would end up shooting themselves or innocent bystanders in a firefight. Punching holes in a paper human silhouette target at the local firing range is a far cry from reacting to someone actually shooting at you. The way the Rethugs put it there’s a violent sociopath on every street corner just waiting to blow somebody away.

This has gone virtually unnoticed, but during the Bush years police forces on college campuses have become Gestapo-like. The lack of campus protests against the Iraq War did not happen by accident. The Bush team wanted no repeat of what happened there during the Johnson and Nixon years.

There was just an interview on cnn with the oldest daughter of the couple in your state who were murdered. Whoever was doing the interview mentioned something about their being killed in their bedroom and how they didn’t have any guns in the house.

You can see where the media and the gun nuts are heading with that one………see, if they’d just had a gun in their bedroom they could have protected themselves. They want this country to turn into “a gun in every pot” mentality. :-(

Jimmie Carter has withdrawn from the southern baptist convention.

He said the “most disturbing” reason he and his wife decided to disassociate themselves from the Southern Baptist Convention was the elimination of language in June that identifies Jesus Christ as “the criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted.”

The campus I’m referring to has a very visible ROTC presence, and the university has a dependence on the federal funds that come from that program. Money purchases influence. The campus (a state university) has the pleasant ambience of a military training camp.

I used to live in Kingston, Ontario. Had excellent care when my 6 year old son had to be admitted with breathing problems. Actually, I just remembered, while we were house hunting in Kingston (we were transferred with my husband’s job from the States) I had an awful bladder infection. Can you imagine how awkward that was? I went to Kingston General’s ER, had tests, was given a prescription, was back in the car in about an hour. As I recall, the cost was incredibly low. Like less than $50 low.

Loved Canada, loved our healthcare.

Also, not impressed with recent generations’ involvement in causes, with the possible exception of environmentalism. They don’t seem to know much about U.S. foreign policy or history. I would guess the absence of a draft has more bearing on the failure of college students to turn out in droves protesting the invasion of Iraq. Students in the 60’s were not much afraid of campus police, or even the National Guard. ROTC units were much more prevelant and much larger in the 60’s, on almost all campuses, than they are now. It just seems like using a magnifying glass to read a billboard.

Draft was certainly important in the 1960s in spurring demonstrations.

However, less visible, more subtle ways of suppression can be quite effective rather than the full frontal approach of the 1960s. Not saying I’ve made up my mind one way of the other, just looking for evidence.

I don’t doubt it, but having been a student in the early sixties, having put three kids through college in the 80’s, and having a granddaughter who just graduated, I don’t think any gestapho had a great effect on their lives and political activities. They’re all vocal liberals. You’re more likely to have your car vandalized for having a Texas Democrat sticker than to run into problems on campus. On the other hand, even elementary schools now have a police presence.
