hi es!
Good evening..)
Evening, Eureka-
Diane Birch is a likable sort…
guess i’m on drive-by. going to fall into bed and a deep sleep, i hope.
Evening newtonusr, She really is.
nite gw. good luck
Hi ES, newton, greenwarrior. Lovely.
hey margot
Evening Margot
Someone please explain the GOP’s plan they stir up their base openly no code words like Reagan did “Chicago Welfare Mom” meant Black for example.
Nope the GOP is saying things like Obama is a Muslim, Obama was not born here the Birth Certificate story, they are claiming Obama is going to take away all their guns.
Funny Gun Control was hardly ever mentioned this election and I think I surfed the net for election news almost everyday before the election.
But the GOP was non stop Obama is going to take away our guns at least until the Minute Men shot that Hispanic girl. The GOP does not seem to realize that this scares moderate voters our way.
You’re talking about the party that reinvented ‘red-meat’ politics. And now it is all they are left with, having overplayed their hand.
Every hammer wants a nail, and they are down to one.
I know retired female school teachers who bought their first handguns after election day.
I am actually more worried about the persistent polling that says a huge majority of those asked think Darwinian evolution is bunk. I thought when those numbers appeared that it was just that – bunk. But now, I am just plain scared about what it says about us.
Its not only Guns its healthcare we got 76% support and we are going into a recession plenty of people worried about their jobs are worried about losing their healthcare.
The rich paying for healthcare with higher taxes seems to have not raised up mobs of angry anti tax tea baggers.
But the GOP are still fighting on this issue the longer this fight goes on the more people we can educate on this issue.
Where is the logic in risking the GOP brand name by associating it with opposing popular causes.
The GOP used to be so protective of their brand name. What happened to the Advertising guys who ran the GOP’s image shop?
Because faux populism is better than real populism. I know, Duh.
The nail I mentioned is not taxes, or health care, or security – it’s fear. Who’s to blame for what real or imagined malady, and teh Goopers sell it hard.
If Obama wants anything worth having, he should have never left campaign-mode in November.
They need more nails to win an election they seem to be thinking emotionally fury, disbelief, denial they lost Obama must have cheated ACORN, Obama is really Muslim and not born here so of course he could not have won the election he was ineligible to run.
Its been months the time for temper tantrums should be over. This snit fit is costing them.
Those who say nay to Darwin had better not go near Buzz Aldrin !
ES !
Odds in many ways are in their favor, imho. Public is ignorant and corporate media is keeping them that way.
Polls show O dropping... As he should be, imho.
And the dumb as a rock idiots like Huck and Palin get well over 40 percent against him.
Evening Petrocelli
Walter Cronkite was honored on “Democract Now”. What a wonderful brave and patriotic American, The purchase of thr media by Moon and Murdoch and other wingers was a huge issue for him. He was a fine fine human who fought to stop the wars in Vietnam, Cambodia and Loas.
He would be standing with us.
Not a shock to anyone, but they are betting on failure, or their ability to portray anything that happens AS failure. I’m not saying it is effective electoral politics in the short-term, but with Obama conceding the stimulus and with it the possibility of recovery, he handed them the biggest weapon they could want. If they can plunder health care (and they are betting a very big hand on this), DeMint may have his point.
Remember that they have always claimed that he was wrong-headed and an experiment. Now Obama either tries to run the table on health care (which his bi-post-non-partisan self resists with every fibre of his being), or he gives them what they want – candy, flowers and strippers to the insurance lobby.
They win either way if he cannot impress the public with both balls and vision. Until just days ago, he has been reluctant to show either.
How are you, Sir ?
DING
No.Shit.
Hiya, pups.
Our incredibly warm Alaska summer is on hold this week as low pressure systems water us. Getting the house ready for an Alaska bloggers party this coming Sunday, the day Palin abdicates.
Wonderful thanks.. spent the day paddling on a beautiful mountain lake, solo, nary a person for miles. Loving Miss Birch above and eating perhaps the best fresh Bing cherries in my life.
You?
Don’t worry about Darwin I think with cloning and DNA its getting harder and harder to stay ignorant remember most Americans don’t go to church as much as their parents did.
I don’t think your last point is fair … Obama and his peeps have been working hard with Congress’s various Committees to get everyone lined up shoulder to shoulder. To get Rangel, Waxman & Miller (?) in sync must have been a tough slog. And he got Baucus to back down, as well as the AMA so I think he has done a very good job until now. From here on in, the fight is on his favorite battlefield – the public domain and the Insurance industry, BigPharma have already lost but are too stupid to understand this (See HRC & McCain).
Yo ET, It’s at least 25 degrees below normal here. So nice, it makes me nervous. *s*
I wish that were true where I live.
Raise a toast for us, to all you Bloggers up there … we salute all of you !
Evening all.
Sunday a baby girl here was christened Palin.
from your lips…
As I said, that number has stayed too high for too long. I keep waiting for someone to call bullshit on the survey questions (which I have admittedly not seen myself), but it never comes.
Are people resistant to the apes = man thing in visceral fashion, or are they swallowing the Fundy™ bullshit?
We actually heard people asking about how to get air conditioning last week. That happens about every five years or so where I live.
HI Sunny.. a christening or a curse? /s
Said
GOOD RIDDANCEgoodbye to one group ofguestspests, have a few days off before some others arrive so will enjoy the quiet. *g*The topic at the party is going to be “working together for Alaska’s future.” We’ll have a toast to Palin’s exit, but not to her demise. She will continue to be an incredibly divisive figure, wherever she goes.
Last weekend my 90-yo mom (91 next week!) told me, “You kids finished her off up there. Now she’ll come down here and destroy the Republican Party for the next 20 years.”
You can paddle now? That’s great!
Too often, embracing a controversial legislative dreadnought is the Senate’s way of smothering it. They snuggle it to their breast and suddenly it is gasping and thrashing, finally tango-uniform by design. I have seen it too often with Feinstein and Nelson and Baucus. I am not a believer until I see Obama sign. He is too set on getting something done. And I regret this sense I have about it very deeply.
ES psddling all day with a cast still on? Wow.
Poor thing.
I am getting calls / reservations for October now…)
LOL … Mom is very wise for her young age ! *g*
oh no, I’ve been out of that thing (wasn’t technically a cast) for a while now.
I accept your premise of why they think like they do. But that don’t make it logical. The GOP is the party of Banks and big business both of whom might need more bailouts in the future.
We do have a high gun ownership rate (we talked about that last thread) we do have a huge difference between the wealthy and the poor.
How soon before the rich figure out that unemployment numbers above 10% plus a high gun ownership rate is not good for them?
The GOP expects anti tax Tea Baggers to threaten Liberals and anti Immigrant Minute men to scapegoat Hispanics and they will but when the bank tries to take their homes does the GOP expect them to throw down their guns?
When they run out of unemployment benefits sure some Minute Men will attach suspected drug dealers but driving to minority neighborhoods and shooting places up is not a good idea.
Lots of rich neighborhoods are much better pickings. The GOP screams class warfare then they arm and incite a mob hoping that the Mob never turns on them with their fat wallets?
If your last card is bad fold don’t play the last hand.
Hey ET, do you by any chance know this guy?
The biggest mistake our side can make is to become complacent. The advantage is with us now, for a strong public option that leads down the road to single payer. Every one of us must work hard until the day Obama signs this into Law.
The difference between now and when Clinton tried it is back then, there was this feeling that it would not come to pass and that lead to desperation, which hastened the failure.
We do not need to act out of desperation but with the knowing that whether we get 50% or 90% of what we want, the die is cast.
I really enjoy watching how this unfolds.
She gets more radical every year. By the time she’s 100, she’ll be ready to run for president.
I am such a dirty old man….
cute little thing, I loves the bangs and the long hair, and she is quite talented too.
Was that a piano I heard in the background?
On the reservoir to the West of you? Nice flat water, fish at the bottom. Very nice day.
Logical? I don’t think they are within meteoric distance of logical.
Would you give Michael Steels the reins of your party? Would you anoint Sarah Palin the hope of your party?
I’m just reading the leaves. They don’t have an electoral win in them, but they can create havoc for their opponent. It is their only play, and they are not shy about doubling down.
I’ll be there to campaign for her ! *g*
I agree about Sarah … as long as she keeps talking, Dems will see big gains in fundraising and votes …
There is an inner core that is very calculating and good at what they do. Unfortunately for them, they’ve created a monster that they can’t control.
Reach into your pockets and pull out all the money you will ever make in your life. Now quadruple it. And quadruple it again. That is how much opponents of the public option spend every day on this battle.
I am not betting against them because the President will not bet against them, and his party is praying that they can undermine it without scarring themselves. Democrats are weak, and they will only become strong advocates when it hurts them not to be weak.
I am not talking about desperation, I am talking about unrelenting abuse from their constituents.
EDIT: Jane Hamsher is the Democrats worst nightmare, for being right.
I so enjoy it too, but I don’t share your optimism (particularly over the short term) at all. Maybe this bill will sort itself out better than it appears, but I expect it to go right after the House.. hard right.
Public plan should be open to all who want in. Not exclude (mandate purchase of private ins.) those with any money at all.
This whole process should begin with a single law claiming all Americans have a right to health care.
Followed by a single law which says one may never go bankrupt or lose their home due to medical problems or costs.
The next law should simply make it against the law for any privateer to ask for r otherwise accumulate individual medical records under any circumstance.
And so on.
Wigwam !
Hey there ES and all.
It’s a little (80 acre) one hundred plus year old lake. Black Bass Lake.. used to be ES water supply. Perfect calm waters for getting back into it.
Can see it in the beginning.. she’s playing it.
Petrocelli, how have you been?
That is precisely what is required, but with facts, hard facts and letters to the Editors, etc. These guys have to be smacked so hard that they’re glad to support a strong public option. The OFA Ad is devastating … need 3 months of this from all sides.
Same could be said for us. (Dems)
Hey KCD..)
Summer has given Toronto a pass, ’sides that, Life’s perfect !
How are you doing ?
i’ve seen him round, but I can’t remember ever talking to or with him.
Just wait isn’t Obama pushing to get all schools the net? Kids can get more information on evolution for a school paper in five minutes than I had in my entire high school biology book.
Double-edged. Is Obama late to the stump on this? (I believe he is)
Teh Goopers want to delay the legislation and they feel it is in their interest to do so. As I say, I am not betting against them. They play this game very well.
If Democrats want something all their own, they need jack-hammers and they needed them months ago. That means their main man – the President – out there selling it hard and taking no prisoners among the Dem caucus. Fuck, I thought that was what Rahm Emanuel was for.
If Obama is really with us in this fight, it’s going to be an epic battle. We have some excellent and hard hitting folks on the front lines (e.g., Jane and nyceve) some good allies in Congress, now (maybe) the White House. What’s lacking is really, really big money.
Dang I wish I could have been around for the Salon earlier. That piano bar topic is right up my alley.
But what I was actually doing during that time was hanging out with elder care attorney about what to do with my partner’s parents, financially. OMG, it’s so harsh for folks who don’t have REAL REAL REAL money.
We asked the following:
1 – Given what you see in the parent’s financial situation, in your opinion what makes it better to liquidate and “gift now” rather than sell the house and spend down their assets “naturally” then apply for Medicaid at a later and appropriate time? I only ask as I’d like to confirm that the end goal is understood by all; that it’s about spending what they have on them, not preserving anything to probate.
2 – Let’s assume the “natural spend down” for a moment. If they sold the house, could they still qualify for the VA benefit, and apply it to their new living situations expenses, and then apply for Medicaid at a later date? It is my understanding that the VA benefit can be applied to any assisted situation.
3 – Does the VA have a “look back” period or penalty for gifting as Medicaid does?
4 – On the “gift now” and apply for Medicaid scenario, what is the look back period and estimated penalty I’ve heard of? How is the penalty calculated?
5 – In your opinion what is the best way to handle their 401(K) type of investments.
6 – How does the VA benefit and Medicaid combination work?
I still am reeling, and haven’t absorpbed all the answers for here in Colorado yet.
But it’s so, what’s the word, ugh….
I think the right way was to get Congress in line first, then hit the Public domain … that’s prolly why I agree with BO because that’s what he has done.
The powerful interests will throw Hundreds of Millions to defeat this but Obama has a formidable grassroots org, as demonstrated in the Dem nomination and GE. Health Care Reform will not only spell the end of Corporate greed in America, it will also weaken the base of the Repugs and BlueDogs as well as the old Power Brokers.
I’ve only met him a few times and that was three decades ago. He has a legendary propensity to attract trouble and then to handle it when it shows up. Very much a character.
This will give you a better look. She doesn’t lose anything when its live, either. This is her TV debut on Craig Ferguson. (BTW-if you want to start your morning with a laugh, record his late nite show.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqdQxYnnAes
If the Blue Dogs and GOPers get their delay, I expect it’s because the big big money PR push is yet to come. Beginning next month.
Steele and Sarah are the best they got?
With cards like that we call that problem gamboling (the problem is you lose)
Sure Bush loved to double down and was WRONG about everything, Bill Bennet Mr “Book of Virtues ” Mr where is the American outrage over Clinton lying about a blowjob claimed he won more than he lost at poker. Then we found out he lost more than he won he lost over a million dollars.
The GOP just loss the WH the House and now the Senate by a filibuster proof margin just what will it take for the GOP to reach bottom.
When you wake up the next morning to Steele and Sarah you have to start asking yourself if you have a problem.
Any Dem that does not fall in line will be smacked over the head with Ted Kennedy’s legacy. If this fails, the Dems are f*cked for 3-4 terms … it really is the first big fight, IMO.
We still have scores of schools in Alaska with Alaska Native students that don’t even have a toilet, and no running water. They are in communities that speak languages that have existed three to six times as long as English has, where the same peoples have lived in the same places three times longer than the Christian era. They would rather have running water than the web.
The fact that these communities even still exist under relentless pressure from missionaries and rapacious capitalists defines evolution better than any time they could spend at wikipedia or the panda’s thumb or pharangula.
I don’t know Newt I think has been playing his cards close to the vest and now he is coming out ashooting from the hip to show just what the Republicans are trying to prevent every American to have! Quality health care! He was on the phone working with Select Blogger( where was Jane’s invite?) getting their help to squash these obstructionist!!
Oh yeah HI Pup late but not forgotten.
And if you haven’t heard there will be a meetup here in Redwood city this Saturday!!!
Did you see Obama’s smackdown of DeMint today ? They can bluster in front of the cameras but no one wants the Pres. smacking them in front of Live Cameras for all to see …
There’s one other point, and perhaps I lean on this piece of advise too hard, but…
Matt Taibbi was here on a Salon one day, and to paraphrase him, “If you want people (voters) to be with you, show your strength and they will see strength. If you show them weakness, they will run like Hell. The perception of being strong and decisive requires that you actually be strong and decisive.”
Throw some elbows, call them liars, use that email rolodex, whatever it takes. Victory will lead to more victory, and failure, well you know.
The public is waiting for someone to get out there and call the insurance companies parasites and thieves. Is it not the truth?
Something will pass… and everyone will claim victory.
If it’s all pushed till 2013 and beyond, history may be kind, but, Americans patience will not carry weight for O and the Dems through the next couple of election cycles. Especially if the economy remains this bad or gets worse for mid an d low wage earners).
Nahant !
Not the point.
They actually impeached the President over lying about blowjobs, they got their wars and their gifts to BigPharma, the religious whacko’s, and their Supreme court picks.
Being right is not enough.
No, not watching much television this time of year.
Except Obama won two major victories without resorting to these tactics. He’s playing this how he ran his campaigns. Pressure has to be sustained from our side and one day in October, we will be sitting here toasting the beginning of the end of bankruptcy from medical problems …
Hey Petro how ya doing this fine evening?? I did love to hear BO smack down De Mint and framed it in such a way as to demonstrate just what it is that the Repukes are trying to deny all of us!! Americans that is….
It was great, huh ? Classic rope-a-dope from BO ! Can you find the video link for ES ?
Speaking of destroying the Repuglican Party … Jindal to speak up on Health Care
THe GOP is also tarnishing their brand name by running ads against Dems who vote for climate change legislation.
People love the environment as an issue the GOP seems angry they are doubling down on loser hands. There is not an unpopular issue/frog/dead frog the GOP is not willing to openly back (no code words)/kiss
http://online.wsj.com/article/…..And_Policy
My Apologies to ShekissesFrogs :)
Fratricide.
I agree with Petro. If the insurance cabal’s $1.4 million DAILY lobbying budget wins this fight, then public opinion and democracy really are done. Plenty of thugs want health care as well. Sure, a percentage will get right back on the whacko bus, but a good amount are seeing what we see-families-THEIR families-going broke due to one unexpected illness.
Obama knows he’s a failure if it doesn’t go through, so we’ll see him in fighting form.
Shockingly, Tweety’s question yesterday was would Obama get health care through. The results were 12-0 yes. Not that pundits are always right, but this was members of the corporate press in most cases.
My biggest concern is will it have a legitimate public option.
Cripes they are giving him another shot at the big leagues I never though of Newt or George Will as intellectuals but Bobby and Sarah are not the GOPers their fathers were.
Looking but no luck so far…
That sounds like an issue to push! toilets, running water and the NET in schools! Maybe Alaska could spend some of that oil money or tax the oil companies more to pay for schools?
Found it … Obama puts a beating on DeMint & The Repugs – from abcnews
I think you’re looking for this…
And I think Obama get this … that unless there is a strong public option that is implemented successfully, he is toast in 2012 !
Thanks Kelly !
Amen to that, but that ship sailed, imo. Not saying we shouldn’t keep trying.
It’s all about costs and whether or not anything passes at all now.
The thing that’s lost on teh Goopers is every one of these sorry f*cktards only serve to remind Americans why Obama gave the Goopers such a beating last Nov.
True being right is not enough. They got everything they wanted, but be careful what you wish for. The GOP’s mistakes got Obama elected.
8 horrible years of Bush 8 horrible years of Democratic Spineless leadership 7 years of the Press Fawning over and lying for Bush.
It is so complex. What I’ve come to realize these past three years, especially working for Diane Benson, is how much more the truly dynamic Alaska Natives have to offer the non-Native Alaskans than we have to offer them. I’d sort of known that for a long time, but it has finally clarified.
To much focus is paid to dysfunctional situations among our First People, rather than to some of the brilliant ideas some notable geniuses among the tribes and cultures have to offer.
Agreed that the GOP is still not getting that fact is puzzling
Spot on, ET … Native Indians have brilliant ideas, esp. WRT reducing our footprint on this Earth and its finite resources.
OTOH, it could very well be that that is the only hand they have to play …
Yep. That itchy feeling I have reminds me of the stim fight. Until he actually bucks the ‘moderates’ in his own party into the dirt, I see him as willing to settle. I want Democrats fighting mad about this.
Lieberman. Snowe. Collins. BadNelson. TheOtherNelson. Landreau. Baucus. Obama loves his moderates.
Maybe focus on that and spread the wisdom to us on the net.
I think in all the muck and haste people are overlooking the simple numbers, and those should be in the framing of this question. I’d do it like this:
*1.3 Trillion – the cost of the Bush Tax Cuts in 2001, geared toward the wealthy, over 8 years (when there used to be a surplus from the Clinton admin. You know the BlowJob guy who had the job till Bush got it)
* ~ 1 Trillion – the cost of the Iraq/Afghan Wars, WITH War Crimes! over 6 years
* 1 Trillion for health care for all, over a 10 year spread, including 48 million Americans who do not have it today.
Just saying….
According to selise this morning none of the house bills currently meet the HCAN criteria, which is what Jane says we should hold out for.
Example of what happens when Obama steps into the Ring:
Referring to comments by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., Friday that “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him,” the president responded: “This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. This is about a health care system that is breaking America’s families, breaking America’s businesses and breaking America’s economy, and we can’t afford the politics of delay and defeat when it comes to health care, not this time, not now.”
The president also notched up his criticism against insurance companies, saying that “the current system works better for drug companies and insurance companies than for the American people,” adding that “even as America’s families have been battered by spiraling health care costs, health insurance companies and their executives have reaped windfall profits from a broken system.”
From ABCNews.com
Agree – so howzabout Obama says what I say in my 107? Or Reid or Pelosi or Axelrod or Rahm or, or, or…..
Couldn’t agree more.. that would be a fight. But it’s a fight we the people were triangulated out of from the beginning. Obama remove advocates of care for all out of the conversation. And the “triggers” meme, and allowing for one second “public plan” to mean anything other than everyone.
http://voices.washingtonpost.c…..-rise.html
Money Quote His star is not as bright as Sarah’s? The Washington Post saw Sarah’s resignation speech right and Bobby’s star is still not as bright as her’s?
If you keep ending the night with losers maybe you should ask yourself why you attract them?
One guy at the top signs it.
But 435 critters and 100 Senators have to hand it up to him. They lack courage and conviction to a degree unimagined just 25 years ago. A Congressman has to fund raise continuously, beginning immediately after his or her election to run again. House races are in the millions of dollars now. Don’t get us started on Senate races.
The President better start throwing thunder, and right now. He is behind.
From Rachel’s show
Best I can find so far.. not all his speech but..
DId you see the OFA ad ? I think it is more effective than throwing ” $1 Trillion ” at the general public. I wouldn’t be surprised if he uses your idea at some point but I think having the public read hundreds of tragic stories WRT health care will be more powerful to pushback against the powers that be; more than numbers and figures … emotions rule !
I don’t see that as a lost cause. In fact, I believe Obama is aware that a bill without a good public option will be viewed years from now as cosmetic. This is the one he MUST win. He needs to kick ass and call out congress kids in the pocket of the sick industry.
Not fighting with ya, but I’m just reiterating, how powerful is it to say that a Trillion for Six years of War versus a Trillion for Ten years of health care for all…
That’s how you sell it. And why aren’t they doing exactly that? And by they, I mean ANYBODY!
That’s the bottom line, and it’s a total progressive sell. Everybody under the $250K annual salary world will buy. Just saying….
Seconded keep the message simple frame the issue our way
It’s best if he does fight as if he is behind. I understand he’s doing a number of interviews and townhalls this week …
flies on moose shit is the best explanation I can think of.
If you want to reduce costs, cut out the middle men and go single-payer.
Shit been busy looking and YOU found it!! Thanks Kelly..
Agree that emotions rule. But Americans have been habitually conditioned since St. Reagan that “spending bad/tax cuts good” for EVAH!
So to counter that, one has to make the number arguments to get people to actually PRIORITIZE! Because that’s what it’s about.
Risk. Risk the argument that people will prize their care, and access to it, over foreign policy, war, and VOILA!, you gets momentum that is unstoppable.
That’s why the DeMint comment thing is so naked, IMO. Nothing to do with Obama; everything to do with fear and status quo.
LOL !!!
Hey, I hope I am terribly wrong, and that he sees this as literal political survival, that he wants this in his bones.
Edit: The Republicans are simply better at this, and they have a lot of help from the other side. Do you really think Kent Conrad or Ben Nelson or Mary Landreau can survive if they get their heads handed to them on this?
Good night firedogs
If Obama and the Dems do not understand that the future of their party is at stake, they’ve got their Heads buried in the Sand …
The way I see it, this is the big fight that changes the course of politics and business in America forever …
G’nite ES, I’m out as well … G’nite all !
Jane fears that he’ll kabuki dance his way out of this:
G’nite ES and everyone. I’m outta here too.
Adios ES and Petro, and whoever else…
I’m next out the door…
nite you guys
me too
So then, would I be correct to deduce from Jane’s definition, that 3 of the 4 prerequisites are already met in the house version? (the exception being not ready for day 1 according to Selise?) If so, It doesn’t seem to me to be insurmountable.
Gee I guess I will grab my parachute and bail out also.
.
. .. … ….
……
………………….
………..
splat!!
Shit the chute didn’t open in time……
…….
..
Nite Pups (:>))
The question that nags – did Harry take single-payer off the table with Obama’s consent?
The Alaska bloggers know Sarah best who do they think talks worse Bobby or Sarah?
If I had to guess yes Harry has no Spine. Obama probably ordered him.
I suspect so, but don’t have any solid evidence.
But, if the clamor over cost gets loud enough, that might serve as leverage for bringing single-payer back.
The seventh comment at this Dkos diary has video of Rachel slicing and dicing Pat Buchanan tonight. It’s great!
Anyone still awake, please go pummel David Brooks for later today’s column.

Sorry, I should clarify what I said, I meant pummel only in the verbal sense, not ever in the physical sense.
Just to be clear,
