You are correct. College students were Nixon’s greatest torment. State colleges certainly weren’t the preserve of the rich, but as long as the Selective Service honored college deferments, ANYONE with money, including students with SAT scores well below 800, were able to avoid the draft by enrolling in any of the pretend colleges that dotted the South.

The initial, greatest, and most long standing opposition to the war came from college students. State colleges weren’t the preserve of the rich.

It’ll never happen. During the early stages of the Vietnam War, the Selective Service drafted everyone, EXCEPT the sons of the wealthy who got college deferments. To defuse the antiwar movement, Nixon had the system changed to make the draft more “equitable.” As the war wound down, the draft was abolished, replace by the all-volunteer military, which is dependent on the bottom layers of our society being crushed economically, to provide a constant supply of cannon fodder.

The rich tire of wars only if they have to actually fight in them. Start sending the sons and daughters of the rich and things could change but then the rich just might see it as a sacrifice they have to make to protect their position of power and priviledge.

It started under LBJ and was institutionalized by Nixon/Kissenger. The military-industrial complex warned of by Eisenhower has had a stranglehold on DC since Nixon.

The war machine is way way to powerful inside of DC and they are calling the shots and why we see every problem with some sort of military solution or presentation of military strength. It the marriage of the corporation with the state getting their interests aligned… ain’t it?
