The ACU, that venerable organization founded by the likes of William F. Buckley and L. Brent Bozell and host of the annual CPAC convention, is no better than a street ho.
The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a check for $2 million to $3 million in return for the group’s endorsement in a bitter legislative dispute, then flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay.
For the $2 million plus, ACU offered a range of services that included: “Producing op-eds and articles written by ACU’s Chairman David Keene and/or other members of the ACU’s board of directors. (Note that Mr. Keene writes a weekly column that appears in The Hill.)”
The conservative group’s remarkable demand — black-and-white proof of the longtime Washington practice known as “pay for play” — was contained in a private letter to FedEx , which was provided to POLITICO.
Conservatives are all about letting the market determine who’ll they’ll, um, service.
And FedEx said "no thanks."
After the rebuff, American Conservative Union changed sides. ACU Chairman David A. Keene was one of eight conservative leaders who signed a letter to FedEx Chairman Frederick W. Smith, a champion of capitalism who in the past has been a favorite of conservatives.
The letter accuses FedEx of “falsely and disingenuously” labeling the rules change a “bailout” for UPS, since FedEx would become subject to the same arduous union structure.
The letter is also signed by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, who is also on ACU’s board.
Guess Grover’s trying to drown ACU’s credibility in the bathtub.

FedEx could have gotten a much better deal from WaPo.
ACU has credibility?
Conservatives lost all credibility by allowing George W. Bush pretend to be one.
From Keene’s latest column in The Hill:
I guess this means Newt missed his payment.
I am shocked–shocked!–to learn that there is pay-for-play going on in the halls of wingnuttia!
ACU: when you absolutely positively lose your credibility overnight.
What’s the tracking number for integrity?
every pig for himself ! work that corner Grover !
BT – could have sworn it was you who predicted this very behavior back during the last CPAC meet up – citing the dwindling pool of winger mega bucks – if so, mad props Tex
oh dog, now have Bob Seger’s Strut running through my head
GOP Love You Long Time!
GOP – Grandiose Old Pimps
More wingnut welfare, only on a more organized scale. What will they think of next?
so this is what it’s all come down to – everyone and everything is for sale. WaPo, Congress, any Rethug party organ or entity.
Isn’t UPS an O’Reilly sponsor?
That’s always been true of the Republics. The difference now is that someone reported on it. Of course, Fox News and Limpy Limbaugh will either not mention it or spin it in some elaborate way.
no. dropped him over one of his many stalking incidents
they’re just not that in to him :D
Principled Conservatism. Those two words should NEVER EVER be used concurrently in a sentence.
GOP – I love you no shit you buy me drink, GI?
Her Strut
Sure they should…the satirical applications are endless.
Shocking!
I just watched the Rachel and Pat show. Buchanan is one racist motherfucker.
And he’s not shy about it, either.
Quite proud of it, I’d say.
Grover Norquist. May the fleas, ticks and mange of a thousand camels infest his crotch. And throw in a couple heartworms and tapeworms for good measure.
Krugman on the present topic:
This may have been covered earlier but I just saw this piece at CNN.com
Goldman Sachs Bites Uncle Sam’s Hand
Unfortunately, I think the last eight years has been one long education for me. Not that our govt wasn’t corrupt before, now it’s part of the job description and there are no limits because public opinion just doesn’t factor in any more. I don’t even know why pols bother to lie anymore.
That’s because the American public has been more interested in being numbed to sleep by teevee rather than being good citizens. That sounds tacky but I think the majority of Americans got the government they deserve. The rest of us got screwed.
ACU is gonna be pissed about if this makes it all the way. This morning a House Committee passed Dennis Kucinich’s amendment to the healthcare reform bill that allows states to have their own single-payer healthcare.

Several Repubs voted for it, so perhaps some hope about this?
I’m so glad the bailout helped somebody. /s
off to read it. and yes, PatB is a pig.
Made me think of that country western song “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose” :)
IIRC Johnny Carson was the originator of both the original lines:
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.
May the Blue Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.
We changed the latter to May the Blue Bird of Paradise Shit On Your Birthday Cake.
oof. in Fortune magazine, no less. burn.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that part. *g*
IIRC the song was recorded by Little JImmy Dickens. It’s very funny. It’s on YouTube
Geez, there was a time when we got up to Jane Pauley on the Today show and went to bed with the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. With a lotta tokes in between. *g*
On edit: I’ve had this slow burn with Gary Trudeau ever since he took Jane away from us. Still do Doonesbury, though.
Back to the cesspool.
Namaste
Reminds me. I saw Jane Pauley in a hotel in NY having lunch alone – she was just lovely and smiled at everyone.
There’s really no such thing as ‘principled conservatives’. Conservativism is really just a formula for making statements and answering questions. It’s a pretty simple formula, so people like Bush and Palin are able to appear knowledgeable when speaking about it. ‘Principled’ implies that the conservative person actually lives by the rules of the belief system. That never happens.
Does anyone know if UPS paid them?
Temple Prostitution
If you or I sold our very persons to the wealthy, yes, that would be whoring. But if you believe, as do the grave worthies of the ACU, that Wealth is Truth, and Beauty, and the two forever reconciled, then letting Wealth take you to use for its pleasure is a sacred act, and not prostitution.
Okay, maybe it’s temple prostitution. Someone ask The Anchoress to clear up this question for us, please.
President Obama has a pretty long history, especially when running against Clinton and McInsane, of liking the “give ‘em enough rope to hang themselves” approach. At least in campaigning, this strategy delivered very positive results.
I’ve wondered if some of this could be happening with the various issues that have come up with the Big Banks, war-mongering military brass, DLCers and Public Option, etc.
Obama can now say he operated in good faith with these folks, took their advice and trusted them to behave responsibly and deliver results they said they were going to deliver, but we now are seeing that these people are simply wrong and untrustworthy, which we all knew would be the case, and I think Obama probably guessed they’d respond this way, but gave them a chance at least.
Now after this bad behaviour, it’s possible for President Obama to start pushing for big reform in banking, Afghan/Iraq, etc. and say, “Hey, you had every chance in the world to operate in good faith and you screwed us. Time to lower the boom.” Not sure that if he would’ve done this from the beginning that any of it would’ve worked. Yes, I realize this sentiment will be mocked as 42-dimension underwater upside down handcuffed chess in a pool of hungry sharks, but there’s a lot of evidence of this approach working and of Obama employing it.
Sure, campaign tactics can’t always be directly applied to governing, but certainly seems to be playing out this way to me. Time will tell of course…
Excuse my ignorance, but I don’t get it. Why would UPS or FedEx want editorials from the ACU? Why would either want to pay for an endorsement? What is the underlying issue?
They sure did.
I guess Brown is the color of what the ACU is delivering for UPS…
I don’t know either. All I got from the writeup was that UPS can suck my dick from now on.
Too late for Norquist to drown the org.’s credibility. It entered the sewer long ago.
