Poor South Carolina, left holding the bag AGAIN! Mark Sanford, who had only just resumed his duties as governor of the financially strapped state, is once more on the romantic run, this time with the woman he actually married, deserting his constituents in their time of need.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford headed out of state Wednesday for personal time with his wife, as the two try to reconcile, and skipped a meeting with a top economic adviser ahead of what’s expected to be more bad economic news including rising joblessness.
Wow. Overblown sense of entitlement much? As the person elected to govern the state, Sanford’s job is to. . . well. . . govern. South Carolina is not his personal sand box to play in when the mood strikes him. Someone toss this guy a few bucks to buy a little perspective. (But don’t worry — the couple isn’t headed to Buenos Aires. They’re probably going to have their second honeymoon at the C Street headquarters with all his buddies. Sanford is a hopeless romantic that way.)
The reconciliation effort "doesn’t negate the fact that we’ve got some serious, critical problems in the budget that is hemorrhaging every day because of the employment situation and the weak economy that requires our best efforts," said state Sen. Larry Martin, a Pickens Republican who has called on Sanford to resign.
"I think his preoccupation with his personal life right now is certainly expected but doesn’t serve the state very well," Martin said.
If the South Carolina legislature had any balls whatsoever, it would have demanded that Sanford step down, instead of slapping him on the wrist for his egregious dereliction of duty.
There appears to be a pattern emerging with Republican governors – when the going gets tough, Republicans FAIL spectacularly. It started with Bobby Jindal’s much-anticipated rebuttal to Obama’s "State of the Union" speech dissolving into the creepiest ten minutes on television that month. Then, weeks after Sanford went AWOL, Sarah Palin, awash in ethics scandals and lucrative book deals, shocks the hell out of everyone by bugging out of Alaskan politics for the bright lights of the Lower 48. Who’s next? I’ll be taking wagers, so feel free to place your bets.
Maybe Michael "Fried Chicken and Potato Salad" Steele had better reconsider his strategery for the Great Republican Renaissance.

Hail Eris!
Watertiger!
Hola!
But not before presiding over a Medicaid misadministration scandal so disastrous (and lethal, to the tune of 200 or more dead) that the feds have had to take over. Makes you wonder about Mooselini’s timing.
Hey, dereliction of duty is a feature, not a bug with Republicans.
Hey Watertiger!
I came home from working all day and had to (ha, I’m kidding) go pickup a pizza while the mister cleaned some dishes and made a salad.
I think I’ve got a pretty good deal here, compared to folks who have The Family looking out for them.
I’m watching tv and I cannot imagine why Sanford’s wife is still On Camera with him. Considering.
What do I know? We’re eating pizza. And, the kitchen’s clean.
Sam Brownback, in the study, with a strap-on.
Corrupt, incompetent, and shiftless all rolled into one nasty package.
When I went to the beach last week I asked the repiglican governors to please hold off on scandals while i was gone. Glad they’ve noticed my return!
It’s a feature for them, but it bugs their constituents.
Poor South Carolina, left holding the bag AGAIN ! - WT
I heard he’s taken the Bag with him this time …
*ducks & runs*
It’s a Palin job!
As an infamous Republican (might have) said, “The trouble with the French is that they have no word for renaissance.”
Oh, Petro, Petro, Petro….
/Felix Unger
You have beaches in Texas???
duck and run?
Petro??!! Have you no shame?
Want some pizza and beer?
Steele just really doesn’t fit in with the Republican brass. They prefer open ignorant race baiting, not stupid ignorant race baiting.
Is a Schwarzenegger scandal too obvious?
I thought it was Mark Foley (aka Wicked Uncle Ernie) who liked to, ummm, fiddle about.
Well, Charlie Crist walked away from something when he got married, so there must be a few abandoned beaux scattered around Florida….
Yes ma’am! We went to North Padre. Posted about it here, including pix & a description of capsizing in my beach wheelchair.
“It’s a topsy-turvy world, and maybe the problems of two people don’t amount to a hill of beans. But this is our hill. And these are our beans !” –
Frank Drebin, Police SquadMark to JennyBrutus was being rhetorically duplicitous when he said he came to bury Caesar, not to praise him, and then proceeded both to praise him and to demolish the opponents whose knives killed Caesar.
In the case of Mr. Sanford, he’s not being rhetorical – it would never occur to him. He’s not being figurative or attacking his political enemies. He’s attacking himself. He wields the figurative knife and stabs his political self, though his spouse may wish she could push it harder and turn the handle.
Dramatic license aside, Mr. Sanford IS the face of the Republican Party, as is Sarah Palin, David Vitter, Lindsey Graham, Larry Craig. So are Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Karl Rove and his many clients, as are the unseen lobbyists and their many clients.
We first have to keep the Democrats from following in their footsteps – the taste of empire, adulterated by the smell of lust for whatever one desires most, is hard to get out of a politician’s mouth. Then we have to remind them that we are a Republic and that the needs of its citizens weigh heavily. We needn’t fiddle, we can build.
And Haley Barbour abandoned K Street….
Yes’m … pass it behind the Sofa !
All I can tell you on Schwarzenegger is what I’ve said all along: only a damned fool votes for an Austrian carpetbagger.
Are you sure he walked away from something?
Idaho has a governor named Butch Otter.
oh please oh please oh please
/Daily Show writers
His knees gave out.
At least Palin resigned and was honest (at least as far as Palin can be “honest”) about her intentions.
It’s pretty obvious that Sanford doesn’t give a damn about his state, considering he fought to deny them much needed stimulus money.
Looking good, girlfriend!
Because of YOU, I’m looking into renting a beach wheelchair for my mom. Daughter’s getting married on the beach in Santa Barbara. But, mom cannot negotiate the sand. We’ll be there for a few days, so I’m going to rent one of those dealies for her.
Dude! Passing now. Shhhhhh. Bell peppers and onions.
LOLOLOL!
Now that would be too perfect.
Remember, Sanford is like King David. You don’t have to give a fuck about your constituents when you’ve been anointed by God.
Jumping in before reading WT, but who among us is a South Carolinian?
Mmmm … Grazie !
I’m emailing God. Right. Now.
I’ll let you know. :)
I could be … for a price !
I disagree a little on this one. Sanford is pretty much the anti-Palin: she resigned for all of the reasons he’s staying in office.
If you rilly love Mom, you’ll get her a Dune Buggy !
Could also be due to temporomandibular joint disorder.
No, babe. Come to California. But, bring those Maple cookies, please.
You do not know my mother! No No No.
I do love her, tho. Trust me.
You’ll see the photos. Cross my heart.
It’s always great when the BigMedia-Repub mouthpiece connection gets exposed, as it did today with the Jake Tapper, et al emails with the henchmen of Gov FathersDay.
I can’t believe people still try to make the case, around here even, that BigMedia actually cares about ratings or informing the electorate.
Another case in point…I just check email and see this on the Yahoo frontpage, right on top of the “news” headlines:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/…..news_pl712
Who the hell is that and why is he given the most prime spot in all of Internet “news” to bash Sotomayor? Couple that with a CNN cut-in I heard earlier today, that only talked about the “wise Latina” stuff and said she evaded all the other “big issues,” with the only clip being some Repub spewing a talking point and an announcer who talked about Sotomayor in a voice dripping in disdain, and we see how we need to bury BigMedia once and for all.
True, jaws can get a real work out as well.
When you post those photos we’d better not see Ma ridin’ in a wheelbarrow.
Does he think he’s fooling anyone? So sad. But better than a lot of Florida choices…jb for instance…
Are they swapping Governorships?? Sarah and Mark that is…
Evening, all-
It’s a sad comment that the people of SC aren’t freaking out en masse and demanding a governor with time to do the job.
Shell shock, probably.
Demi be careful! Hold on to the chair when it’s in the ocean. I think those things are much better suited to lakes and ponds.
Never going to happen.
(you’re not blushing today, are you? You cracked my shit up last night.
You! (((Ratfood)))
What?
A “progressive conservative columnist”…?
“Oh no! Commie Nazis!”
–Ranier Wolfcastle
Working on coming down there in the next few months … for work of course … *wink*
Butch Otter What? *g*
We do have some real prizes here.
No email yet demi… inquiring minds want to know about the 25th???
How can anyone possibly understand her reasons for resigning?
Sarah Palin hasn’t yet made a convincing case of it, to her state or the “elite” media. No one knows why, and I suspect we won’t know until the indictments are unsealed.
Oh, J. C. Not planning to go in the water. Just get down the sand to the place where the kids are doing the ceremony. And maybe, some walks.
But, thanks!
*
Gotta walk the dog. BBL. Nice to have a little cooler weather for tonight.
*
Mother is 83 and ever since dad died, it’s all about the walker. And, that’s is just not going to work on the sand. No water. Trust me.
You’ll let me know, of course. Oh, Boy! I meant, eh?
Doubt you’d fit in too well in SC! They like ‘em like Sanford. Stupid, hypocritical and white.
Apologies to all smart SC folks, but dang, can you help out here?
I truly know how hard it is though, living in Darrell Issa country.
Seems like in time politicians should probably evolve jaws that can unhinge, not that anything they do is conducive to species survival…
Of course … have to meet my fave “Issa Bashers” !
Ah, I understand. I brought my oldest and seriously scratched-upped pair of canes just from fear of salt & sand / rusting
I worked all day. Have a big concert on the 22nd, which I’m producing. Got some work on that and then…. I said Thursday. Tomorrow’s another day, and you are on My LIST!
Dude!!!!! love ya. Mean it.
Walking the dog, Or Else.
Shoot, John Edwards was two out of three …
Seems likelier to me that constituents should develop hinged jaws, to assist them in swallowing what politicians tell them.
Thank ya.
I don’t blush very easily, although parts of me sometimes assume a rosy hue.
Condolences Loo Hoo(:>(( anyone who has to deal with Issa is truly in purgatory!
Too funny, rf!!!
What if there were pillows in the wheelbarrio!!? And a headrest and seatbelt?
Yes, was perplexed by that also.
And this was quite odd too…
No mention of Franken, Feingold, etc. and some of the in-depth legal conversations that took place during the hearings so far.
Teflon chutes might be better.
Works for me sweetie… sure hope you and your hubby can make it up for the meetup… should be fun for all.
Well time to dig into the hot wings & fries… catch ya on the late late nite…
707!!!
shock absorbers?
When I took care of my mom I always threatened to take her places in a wheelbarrow. She laughed, we used to kid each other a lot.
I know you do Ron. We all have our disasters. BUT! Things are changing for the better. Too slow for many people, but for US, just watch the freaking nutsy republicans these days. They are self destructing much faster than anyone could have predicted.
And hello, again, Ron, to the most polite man on all of the internets. So nice to cross paths!
Arnold of the big California gamblers ruin crisis may take “when the going gets tough, Republicans FAIL spectacularly” to a whole new level. This post may need an update in a few weeks. Or days. Or, who knows?
Last I heard the Gubernator and desparate legislators were talking about making CalBucks (California state IOUs) legal tender for paying state taxes and fees. Which some say would amount to allowing California to have its own monetary policy.
That will be interesting. I’m down. Let’s do it!! HHuuuwaaaahhhh!
She resigned because Medicare is examining what’s been happening in Alaska, and old folks are dying because of lack of care.
*click*
Republicans: the party of a thousand petty Caligulas.
This whole Sanford affair is quickly turning a Flannery O’Connor type story.
In my experience Medicare denies recipients necessary care ALL the time. Evidently Alaska was failing to enroll people at all so they really didn’t have a chance…
I’m disgusted with Edwards, Petro. What has he done for the second America since he left the campaign trail?
RonD !
Agree with you, Loo Hoo … the Repugs are self- destructing faster than I thought and it will only quicken with a strong Public option.
Well, gee, there are so many possible options, but that Medicare thingy sounds like the winner. Do we have a post here from any pups about this latest revelation?
the new rethug doctrine: we rule by divine right. The Cult of King David.
His affair will follow him around for a while … too bad he’s not a Repug, those guys
lurves adulterers … /s
That really is the Republican healthcare plan, don’t get sick if you are poor. Of course, I suppose it has the advantage of dramatically reducing demand for Medicare. I mean if nobody survives long enough to collect….
dosido !
I LOL at your earlier comments today.
They have been saying that for 30 years.
You’re the first one I’m telling …
Petro!!!
Ya know, I don’t really agree with the Repubs are destructing conclusion. There is a rich vein of Angry White Bigots that people like Palin & Beck etc tap into. It’s scary that it has become so “mainstream”. I believe “reasonable” conservatives have infiltrated the dem party as the blue dogs and there you are. Party affiliation is dead perhaps, but the ideology lives on. Power finds power, regardless of labels.
Hey, I couldn’t get enough wheelbarrow rides from my brothers when I was a kid! Course we made skateboards out of roller skate wheels and a piece of wood back then. Worked a lot on improving the steering capabilities. Fun!
g’nite firepups
bwahaha…I’m getting punchy with all the kabuki going on these days.
Let’s go with Ahab. That is an All-American character. And if we call Sanford that and he doesn’t get it, well… that will be interesting for a Bible-believing Christian. But, better not since we will be accused of fomenting revolution, and his wife is no Jezabel.
OK, maybe not so good. I think some more.
Night.
People are a lot more familiar with Elizabeth Edwards than they are with other cheating politicians spouses. Don’t know if John will ever live it down. I used to really like him but it turned out that he’s kind of a jerk.
hey tex! nighty nite.
Nighters.
I say that, noting that key figures in the party like Megan McCain are smacking down NotJoeTheNotPlumber, Coulter, RushBo and others.
Clearly there is a Civil War breaking out within the Repug party. Once the NeoCons weaken further, the BlueDogs will see their support crumble as well. Then the Progressives will gain true majority power.
I am hugely disappointed as well.
I read body language fairly well and when the Edwards came out together that day to announce her cancer etc I thought it was so weird that he didn’t touch her in any way, like an arm around her, or hand holding. He was so awkward. It struck me as odd. Then I learned that she is also a career woman and chalked it to that. But alas, no. It was a tell.
G’nite Betsy !
How about Hester Prynn?
Really? I have no experience with medicare other than watching my mom. She gets far more tests/ biopsies/ medicines than are healthy.
I totally want people to get the meds they NEED, but I think the incentive for Docs to test and prescribe is WAY out of control.
(check this…and don’t know if it was medicare or medical…but my mom, at age 78, got dental implants instead of dentures.)
Well the timing does line up.
Also, in the first big interview he did about the affair, he looked the interviewer straight in the eye UNTIL asked if the baby was his or if payments had been made. At that point he turned shifty eyed and blustery. Another tell. It surprised me since I assumed a successful trial lawyer would have a better poker face.
Time for me to head out. Going to head up to Glacier Nat’l Park for the weekend tomorrow. Will spend the next four days here. Camping, hiking, and fishing with no students to deal with. Take care all.
Here’s some elaboration on the Flannery O’connor reference. She is one of the drollest Southern authors that ever wrote and she was a devout Catholic. From her novel Wise Blood:
I think it fits a little bit.
ouch. I missed that. I didn’t watch because the news was bad enough and I didn’t want to witness the squirming. I was already disillusioned enough. Too bad, because I liked his platform.
Medicare is pretty good for preventive medicine, it’s when you really NEED something and don’t meet the criteria. Example, my 85-year-old aunt fell and broke her left arm. The ER staff dislocated her right shoulder. Despite being 85 and unable to use either arm, the hospital would not admit her because Medicare designates arm fractures and dislocated shoulders as only requiring outpatient treatment.
G’nite. Have fun.
Oh sure. Can’t wait to read the emails about the detour to Argentina.
Have a great time, DrD !
Yet another unfortunate case of squandered potential.
I just toddled over to crooksandliars and saw the Bernie Sanders smackdown: The VA is a socialized health care system, right, Mr. McCain?
Ouch! That’s going to leave a bruise!
Man, Bernie Sanders is punching like Ali !
I’d be really surprised if Medicare paid for dental implants. Normally it doesn’t have anything to do with dental, unless you require reconstructive surgery or something like that.
Also, I don’t lump Medicare Parts A & B with Part D (the drug plan), which is a real clusterfuck. It only works well if you don’t require expensive meds. If I took the newer drugs for rheumatoid arthritis that my doctor would prefer, it would chuck me in the donut hole (initial coverage limit) within two months. I’d then have to spend nearly four grand out of pocket before Medicare Part D kicked in again.
Have fun and take good care DD.
THAT is disgraceful. Way wrong.
Heading out, splendid evening to all.
That is so WRONG!
I agree with ratfood. Even if you have dental, reimbursement for implants is difficult to get.
Not sure your mom is too old for impants. If she is average 78 year old lady, her life expectancy is 11 to 12 years. If I expected to live that long, I would want implants. If an elderly person might have more problem with bone loss due to dentures, that also might be a factor. And I hope your mom lives in good health longer than a decade! So, not sure that was unnecessary care.
Yes, that is an horrible story. Hope it didn’t go too badly wrong.
Two months in a nursing home which was closed shortly after she left for numerous recurring code violations. She’s back in her apartment. She’ll never be as good physically as she was prior to the accident but she’s happy to be home.
WT, I was taught early on in my first dishwashing job at age 13, don’t bring your PHUCKING personal problems to work!!!!
I still believe it.
At work I don’t wanna know about you, your personal life, or anything else.
What’s the job, let’s get it done to our BEST ability’s, and then we can all go home.
What happens at work stays at work, and what happens at home don’t come to work.
Sanford is a hoser, a loser, and he ain’t getting the job done.
Most of us would be fucking FIRED for that shit. *G*
I say, we gang up on him, and mass call his office . . . or the RNC.
He just don’t BELONG no mo in the control of his state!!!
Not really. Only in presence, not spirit.
Dude, Nice Rhetorical Analysis! *G*
Alas, the Dem’s are FAR past any noblisse oblige of Brutus . . .
And yeah, it’s OUR job to straighten their sorry stage player asses out!!! *G*
We are the blade, they are the fat to be cut. In a totally, non violent, peaceful kinda way, of course. *G*
You’ve. Got. To. Be. Kidding.
Right?
DAMN THAT DOG! STRIKE A MATCH!
‘Kin *G*!
Thank you.
Mom’s implants have come out. Screwed up the bone, and took her best teeth. (bottom incisors)
Walkin The Dog! MY Style!
what is next?
