[Please welcome Jeff Sharlet, the bestselling author of The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, and a contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone. Jeff brought The Family to Book Salon last year. --G.L.]
America’s favorite bloodsport — scandal — has thrust the Family, the subject of my 2008 book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, back into the news. Lucky for me, the revelations of Senator John Ensign’s and Governor Mark Sanford’s sex scandals — and their links to the Family — come just as the book is being released in paperback. At first, I was reluctant to comment — what’s a sex scandal compared to the real business of the Family? Not cover-ups for congressmen but the projection of American power through the lens of piety and the sacralization of free market fundamentalism.
Then Mark Sanford invoked King David as a justification for staying in power, an unorthodox reading of scripture I was familiar with from my time as a member of the Family. In short, Sanford was telling the public that he’s governor not because they elected him but because he was chosen by God. That, to me, is a lot more disturbing than the news that he has a libido.
Things got more interesting — and more troubling with the revelation that not only had John Ensign and his parents paid his mistress off, the Family played a role in the arrangements. The man Ensign cuckolded, Doug Hampton, insists that Senator Tom Coburn, a resident with Ensign at the Family’s C Street House for congressmen, urged Ensign to offer even more than the $96,000 we know about — $1.2 million to make the Hampton family "whole."
Coburn’s no cynic. In fact, despite his extreme right-wing views — he’s proposed the death penalty for abortion providers — he’s known for personal integrity. The pay-off scheme, if it’s what it looks like, isn’t proof that he’s a hypocrite; it’s evidence that he’s operating under a different system of ethics than most of us are familiar with. The ethics, that is, of biblical capitalism, the belief that everything can be bought and sold, and that God sets the price. What looks like pimping to outsiders may well strike Senator Coburn as justice — a $1.2 million price tag for sex with another man’s wife and the destruction of a family.
And it keeps getting worse. Working with Chris Rodda of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, I’ve learned that Ensign, Coburn, and several other congressmen have been representing the U.S. overseas on official business even as they traveled on the Family’s dime. Congressmen confused about who they were working for spread the Family’s unique American fundamentalism as far afield as Serbia, Sudan, Belarus, and Pakistan. Senator Coburn traveled to Lebanon to establish the same kind of Family prayer cells — that’s their word for them — that provided cover for Ensign in that religiously torn country. And, like many of his brothers in the Family, he humbled himself with strenous vigorous missions to the British Virgin Islands; the Family’s also been paying for travel to Aruba.
The mainstream media is finally catching up. The Washington Post, for instance, is calling for an investigation into the financial circumstances of Ensign’s affair. John Ensign, meanwhile, has announced that he’s sticking around — and seeking reelection.
Let’s hope the voters of Nevada are able to remind him who put him in power, and who can take power away. God may be John Ensign’s supreme authority, and the Family his priests; but in a democracy, it should be the electorate who giveth and taketh away.

Hi Jeff, welcome to the Lake. Sure glad you wrote a book about this scary group. We all need to know all about them.
Me too ;~P
Curse that edit feature :)
Has anyone asked about their tax-exempt status? Seems like something is being violated here.
Welcome, Mr.Sharlet. What a timely release!
Amen, and pass the lube!
“$1.2 million to make the Hampton family “whole.” Whole? Or a whole lot quieter? Welcome to the Lake, Jeff – great to see you here!
Thanks, Jeff, for your recent appearances on Rachel Maddow’s show, bringing your expertise to a wider audience. Chuck Grassley, who thinks we all simply need to get a job with the federal government if we want better health care, is also a member of The Family according to his wiki. Have you catalogued all its members, regardless of their living arrangements?
Is he, now? Glad to have some additional reasons not to vote for him again next time around.
A little over a year ago Jeff had a good interview on GRITtv. Scary stuff then and just as scary now.
Glad to see the book out in paperback, eerie timing. Maybe someone has a plan? [g]
As a PK, I always tune in for more “You Can’t Argue with God” pronouncements from those who claim to have been chosen.
Also, the bigger sin is not that Sanford is horny, or that he claims to be God’s chosen, but that he sinned with taxpayer money and went AWOL. I mean, that’s just crossing the line, that there.
Welcome to the Lake! I look forward to reading your book.
Jeff – also, a question I have is this:
Do groups such as The Family get together and work with other far right Christian/Dominionist groups, like Rich deVos?
Thanks, folks. In response to the tax status question above — yes, they’re tax exempt. Early in their career they considered registering as lobbyists, then concluded that they could have more influence if they didn’t. Which, of course, is exactly why those lobbying rules are in place.
Not so much DeVos, but yes. The Family helped found Officers Christian Fellowship, the group I wrote about in my May Harper’s cover story that declares the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan “spiritual war of the highest magnitude” and has 15,000 military officers in its ranks. Also: Campus Crusade, Young Life, Promise Keepers, and a whole host of smaller outfits.
I’m sure if someone could come up with one of those socio-graphs showing all the interconnections of these groups, it would be a real eye-opener for a lot of people.
“crusade”…ouch. that says it all. so much for religious tolerance and freedom from religious persecution.
The Norse and Anglo-Saxon contributions to the law included the Wergeld, payment of something of value for a wrong instead of exacting vendetta, an improvement on the Bible’s directive of proportion – an eye for an eye, not a whole family for an eye or even a single death.
Dr. Coburn is not entitled to his own ethics, however; only his own politics. That he thinks such exchanges of value are moral and excusable does not mean his competitors or society at large should.
Yeah, you always know when you hear that word that you’re going to get insightful, culturally sensitive consideration of the issues at hand.
NOT!
Are there any limits with regard to behavior of Family members?
Or are limits just for us un-chosen ones?
Whenever I hear about groups like this, I have flashbacks to Robert Ludlam thrillers. Groups like Enver Brass, that (fictionally speaking)operate in shadow and control everything of consequence. Or, in the real world, Skull and Bones, who supplies most of the CIA leadership. Is the Family really all that powerful?
Hey Jeff! Good to see you back at the Lake.
Folks might like to take a look at our book salon with Jeff from last year – it was a great discussion. Then again, the book is one of those must-reads if you want to understand what’s happening in our country.
Welcome Jeff. Wonder if you can comment on the relationship between The Family and some of the youth ministry organizations.
Thanks
I’ve been interested in following Indiana Republican Mike Pence. Is he a member of this group?
Are there any women in this outfit? I mean, except as temptresses?
Ding! I believe I heard that from you on an interview, NPR maybe.
And I thought, as a faithful Sunday School attendee for 20 plus years, I understood the story of King David.
And now you say Grassley belongs, too?
Well, I guess I will be using that Borders coupon after all. The book is out now, right?
And thank you!!!
LOL!
The fellows are not lacking for salt.
In that respect, they’re a bit like Lot…
Welcome Jeff. I’ve appreciated your appearances on Rachel and look forward to reading the book.
Do you have to ask?
I mean, truthfully, I don’t know the answer, but if it isn’t “No,” I will eat my proverbial hat.
(or, wait, donate some more to the Marcy/Sarkisyan transportation fund)
For some reason I thought that the ‘4 alarm fire’ notice for Sanford was put out by his wife – wasn’t the ’spiritual advisor’ that went with him to NYC for the ’sorry, it’s over’ talk a member of the Family?
What do the live-in members actually do in the house on C Street? Enquiring minds want to know.
Only as servers and cleaners. The “C” Street house is one of many. According to a 2004 story, they have houses in Northern Virginia. The group seems to be cross between a mini-Goldman Sachs and a mini-Church of Scientology.
This expression of “God’s will” has men leaders and women followers, and a smooth guy at the top with glittering teeth and a Napoleonic height and ego.
Men, of course, must also learn to be humble, which according to that 2004 story means they should learn to wipe the toilet bowl after they pee. Not to clean it mind, as a parent my teach, but to teach humility.
It’s a place of wholesome worship and cutthroat backroom deals. Or is that cutthroat worship and wholesome backroom deals…? Also.
Funny, the now-famous house is almost directly across the street from where I work. Walked down the block to stare at it the other day. Looked big, posh, empty, sterile, and drenched in money.
Enquiring minds want to know what’s in the closets and how many pillows per bed.
Gee, that doesn’t satisfy my curiosity. I want dirt. *g*
Also about the pillow talk.
Since some of Sanford’s action -where he did not cross the line- occurred out of the country I have to wonder whether there may have been extra big tips being paid now or in the past to some of the entertainment? Just rhetorical.
So instead of being sued for sexual harrassment, there was a negotiated settelement and only $96000 was paid. Was the wife a willing participant or did they accept an offer they could not refuse?
Were the popparazzi (sp?) also there checking out who’s coming & going?
Are people drawn to this because they’re naive, want to be virtuous, want cheap housing, power hungry, lonely…?
Jeff – How long, once you were out of the ‘clutches’ of the Family, did it take you to put this all together for a book?
The best part about Ensign is that at the age of 51 he still has to be bailed out by his mommy and his daddy. I wonder if they also tell him how to vote in the senate.

Nope – I was the sole paparrazza, at least at that moment ..
I did want to throw some toilet paper on the landscaping, or toss a condom on the front stoop or something .. unfortunately I don’t carry either in my pocket ..
Hm, maybe I’ll go back and chalk REPENT on the sidewalk or something ..
Another instance of the MSM missing the big story…
Let us not forget the price extracted by God for David’s transgression. The life of his and Bathsheba’s first born child. And you thought God was pro-life. We will leave the discussion of God’s slaughter of innocent children in the Passover for another time. My question is this: Did God kill the child because of the affair with Bathsheba, or because David, in effect, murdered her husband Uriah?
Oh my! Was it scary? Seems like Halloween to me.
I like it!
Seriously, you’ve done a great service with this research and writing, Jeff. When I first heard about the “little capitol hill boardinghouse of faith” it sounded so modest and humble blah blah blah. We need to all keep a harsh light on this creepshow money cult and not let it slither away with the news cycle.
Jeff, if you’re still here – you should be getting some good royalties – I just checked my hold status on “The Family” at my library – 10th of 16 holds!
They may have to buy a few more copies, and some of us on hold will no doubt go ahead and buy it ourselves.

I think I remember that Mark Sanford talked about being in other countries with a group of other men when he “crossed the line” with other women. Were those men from The Family? Were there others who used it as an opportunity to meet safe women in another country and be sexual, as long as it wasn’t actually intercourse, of course?
Hey, thanks for your interest, folks, and apologies for my delay in responding. Got a baby in one arm, typing slowly with the other. In brief:
I came across what looked like some Mike Pence connections but didn’t follow up for the book. That’s worth investigating. Of course, the easiest way to start is to ask him — that’s how I learned of Rep. Frank Wolf’s involvement, for instance.
As for connections to youth ministries: galore. The House on C Street is actually owned by Youth With a Mission. The Family has long looked at Young Life, a mostly innocuous outfit, as something akin to a farm team. Likewise the Navigators, from whence the current leader, Doug Coe, came. Bill Bright and Campus Crusade were helped out in the early days by the Family and repaid the favor many times over during hte last couple decades.
WOmen — in general, the core leadership of the Family subscribes to the idea of “male headship.” You can guess what that amounts to. But they do work with women with power. AS doguc Coe says, “We work w/ power where we can, buld new power where we can’t.”
Rev. Ben Daniel, a former member, describes it in an article he wrote — Family women say that in their husband’s lives first comes The Family, then them. And thy think that’s fine.
Took five years of archival research and interviews and writing to put the book togehrter.
Thanks! I’ll check in later!
It sounds like the mafia to me. I always suspected that “the Family” got good government rates after the Kennedy assassination. The whole country seems to be run by organized crime now; maybe the whole world is.
You can bet that Lehane is part of this while thing too, Left Behind and all that.
Funny you should say that — they call themselves the Christian Mafia. But that’s the extent of that connection.
I think you’re thinking of Tim LaHaye. Different power base. He’s a premillenialist — thinks Christ is coming back any day. Family is postmillenial — thinks Christ is coming back only after 1000 years of Christian rule.
LEHANE, meanwhile, is a fine novelist. Mystic River.
I’ve been noticing for years, the Republicans that do the podium/scandal speech, always invoke God. You nailed it! Be it gay sex scandals, mistresses, non-sex scandals…they all invoke something religious. Good one! You got it! And it IS implying, “Don’t you dare judge me, because God chose me!”
Thank you so much for returning to the Lake today, a genuine privilege to catch your insights on this -
Congratulations on the current success and well earned spotlight – hope you are enjoying the ride
at what point should we start worrying about the potential of a coup d’état… or that a coup has already happened? 15,000 military officers, senators, congressmen, governors… all part of this Cult of David?
“Then Mark Sanford invoked King David as a justification for staying in power, an unorthodox reading of scripture I was familiar with from my time as a member of the Family. In short, Sanford was telling the public that he’s governor not because they elected him but because he was chosen by God. That, to me, is a lot more disturbing than the news that he has a libido.”
Bishop Bossuet would be proud.
I think you hit the mark with the GOd’s Governor.
It was his spiritual advisor/marraige councilor Cubby that told Sanford if he was to find a way to force himself to fall back in love with his wife. She would be bound to take him back and he then could stay on as Governor because it would be right with God.
Well pretty darn close to that effect….
I understand George Washington was agnostic. Might have been a good reason for it.
I want to know the names of ALL the public, political people on their list!
I know I remember Hillary Clinton being on the list (shortly after she was elected senator). Did they help her get elected?
I am sick of partisan BS. “GOP BAD, Dems GOOD!”
If Dems (yes, even Hillary) use this freak show, tell us.
