The Republican Party has a serious infection of anti-science syndrome. And, scientists have noted the The Republican War on Science. The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press came out, last week, with a report
entitled Public Praises Science; Scientists Fault Public, Media. This is an interesting polling report, on a number of levels.
As per the title, let us focus on one item: Scientists and Party affiliation. Once, there were sizable portions of the scientific community in basically all portions of the American political scene. No longer. As can be seen in the table to the right, "Partisan and Ideological Differences", of 2500 polled scientists, just 6 percent of the polled identify themselves as Republicans (as opposed to 23 percent of the overall population).
As Stephen Colbert put it, "reality has a well-known liberal bias". (Although, perhaps it truly is that liberals have a bias toward reality?) Scientists work in, specialize in understanding reality. Should it shock anyone that they have a liberal bias?
Now, as Republicans continue to proudly flaunt their Anti-Science Syndrome (A.S.S.) suffering Haters of a Livable Economy (H.O.L.E.) credentials, this poll suggests some severe political risks of determined attacks on science and the scientific community on issues like Global Warming.
- "Both scientists and the public overwhelmingly say it is appropriate for scientists to become active in political debates about such issues as nuclear power or stem cell research."
- While scientists self-identify as liberal, most American’s don’t see scientists as liberal. Thus, engaged experts might view themselves as politically liberal, the general public is likely not to view them in this way.
- Scientists are the third most respected profession (after the military and teachers)
These three combine to suggest that scientists could be strong spokesman for "liberal", "progressive", "science-based" policy.
Now, disinformation on key issues clearly has had an impact.
- "87% of scientists state that evolution is the result of natural processes with just 32 percent public agreement."
- "the near consensus among scientists about global warming is not mirrored in the general public. While 84% of scientists say the earth is getting warmer because of human activity such as burning fossil fuels, just 49% of the public agrees."
These sort of significant gaps between expert and informed knowledge and general, public view should be — are — troubling. The scientists identify poor media coverage of science as a key problem. And, journalistic analyses of media reporting on global warming agree with that. Thus, the challenge isn’t expert knowledge, but communicating that knowledge to the general public with a thick and confusing media filter while dealing with determined disinformation campaigns.

GOP’ers hate facts.
GOP’ers love only Christian fairytales.
GOP’er Goodhair of Texas just appointed a hater of facts and lover of Christian Fairy tales to head the Texas Board of Un-Education.
The GOP antifact antiscience bent is a complete mystery to me.
Their lack of understanding of economics comes in a close second.
The GOP wouldn’t hold up well under the scrutiny of voters capable of objective analysis, so they pander to the most gullible.
The Dems wouldn’t fare a lot better if judged on the facts but they garner votes for simply being the (slightly) lesser of evils.
As economics is my field, I understand why the Rs don’t get it. They have an ideological belief that “free markets” solve every economic problem. Of course, they never study actual markets to see if they are actually like the self-regulating market with atomistic producers that the model requires. Which, of course, very few actual markets resemble.
But what is behind their belief that science is bunk? One of the books I’ve read since acquiring my beehive is about Colony Collapse Disorder. The author makes a big point that human centered thinking is the cause of most environmental disasters, i.e., that some humans think they are the center of the universe and they can do anything to the natural world that they perceive to be in their benefit. I suppose that a lot of science challenges the human centered world thinking and is therefore rejected out of hand by wingnuts.
Of couse, science brought us herbicides & pesticides, and GOPers probably love those. Like OBL wants to take Islam back to the 7th C. but is perfectly willing to use modern technology in the battle to do so.
You got that right. I am fond of saying that I never voted for a U.S. prez, only voted against the other candidate.
They loathe science for the same reason they loathe discussing anything on merit.. especially if it means they might need to change or even reconsider their views.
The essence of science is that nothing is ever proved, only hypotheses waiting to be disproved. Wingnuts and fundies can’t live in such a world where nothing is certain.
Oh goodie, the Miss Marple mystery on PBS is starting off with some beekeeping. As the new, proud, owner of a beehive, I must watch.
They seem to be waitng for the Rapture, when Christ and Ronnie Reagan both come again. The order in which they come doesn’t matter much.
I basically agree with everything being said here. But then I watch “Jesus Camp” or some other documentary showing how the children are being
brainwashedtaught that believing in evolution is sinful and that science is a hoax and then I wonder what kind of person I’d be if I had been subjected to that. Now Texas will have a creationist heading the dept. of education. 10 years from now we could have another generation of science-rejectors in that state.
I am a product of my education. Some kids don’t have a chance.
Raygun seems to have been elevated to god status in the Rs. Just shows you how much scraping the bottom of the barrel is going on.
Had a housemate in grad school who kept hives in the backyard. We got a couple hundred pounds of honey out of those.
You have that right ES. I never me a repuke who when shown the “True” facts changed their mind about anything! I mean anything even what hand they should use to wipe their ass! Not that they really ever wipe their own asses….
/s
They rubbed a hole through the bottom of that barrel!
Yep, soft power (education) is much more powerful than hard power. Too bad U.S. prez’s don’t know that.
The wingnuts are trying really hard to win on the soft power front. Jury’s out whether they’ll succeed or not.
Oh is that how they go?
My hive arrived two weeks ago Tuesday, so I’m a real neophyte. I have a beekeeper who will do the dirty work, if and until I learn & decide I want to do it for myself. Meanwhile, I’m have great fun learning about honeybees. Won’t get any honey this year, owing to newness of hive and their need to prepare for winter, but I’m looking forward to next year’s harvest.
I inadvertantly disabled a bumblebee on my back porch this evening. She was investigating my sneakers, when I put my heavy sandals down next to the sneakers and lopped off one of her legs. I suspect she was not in top form to begin with.
Holy shit.
6%?!
That’s shocking.
Modern science is driven by the inquisitive nature of the mind that was promoted by the attitude of the Enlightenment. American-style conservatives are fundamentally opposed to the Enlightenment and its demand to always “ask the next question.” So there is little wonder that people who are drawn to ask the next question are opposed to a political ideology that considers asking the next question heretical.
Can you imagine what the U.S. would be like is the Founding Fathers were not children of the Enlightenment? It’s beginning to look what what it would have been right from the getgo, absent Enlightment.
Did you get smoker and the hat net and all of the rest of the goodies?
Well put …
‘demand to always “ask the next question”‘ …
If one assumes that what one knows is fundamental truth, it seems as if there are no questions to ask. No?
For some reason CCD keeps coming up on FDL. FYI, there is now strong scientific evidence that this is not a man-made phenomenon, rather is the result of a viral epidemic.
It could have been worse. He could have appointed that other dipstick who also homeschools her kids. But he also could have appointed the Republican Baptist whose name escapes me at the moment who voted to exclude the elliptical references to creationism because he felt that religion did not belong in the science classroom, not because he didn’t believe in creationism.
Goodhair is angling for the win in the Republican primary against Kay B. and according to a poll I saw yesterday, he is now leading among Republicans by a considerable margin. I don’t know whether it would be better for Texicans to have Goodhair win the primary because then he would lose big in the general election (assuming that the Democrats actually come up with someone decent), or have Kay B. win because she has to be better than Goodhair.
It’s no surprise to me. True intellectuals look at the facts, discarding outworn ideas for better and more accurate ones. They amend or even scrap incorrect paradigms for ones that more accurately predict outcomes. Can you imagine the ideologically-driven GOPers ever doing that? Worse, they made a deal with the devil–in this case the fundangelicals, to get their votes, you know–and now the fundies have taken over their party. As long as those idiots are in charge, there’ll be no new ideas from the GOPers, and the Republican party as we know it will swirl ever faster down into the toilet bowl of history.
