There’s some real zingers in Nooners’ latest Palin beatdown — especially the surgical rebuttal of the Kristol/Douthat "the snobby elites and the media hate Palin" spin.
But as always, Nooners indicts herself as well.
She was a gifted retail politician who displayed the disadvantages of being born into a point of view (in her case a form of conservatism; elsewhere and in other circumstances, it could have been a form of liberalism) and swallowing it whole: She never learned how the other sides think, or why.
In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn’t say what she read because she didn’t read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn’t thoughtful enough to know she wasn’t thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. "I’m not wired that way," "I’m not a quitter," "I’m standing up for our values." I’m, I’m, I’m.
Remind you of anyone? "I’m a war president," "I’m the Decider," "I’m the Commander Guy," "I don’t read newspapers." Does anyone think W. is thoughtful or a well-read student of the opposing view? Anyone think he’d have been president if he hadn’t been born a Bush? Nope.
But for Noonan, all those traits were just dandy as she gleefully anointed The Next Reagan.
Mr. Bush speaks of God and George Washington and Reagan, and the elites find it unsophisticated. But for many citizens it will be good to see in leadership one of such simplicity, grounded in such realities, respecting of such wisdom.
And,
Mr. Bush, as we all know, has a tendency to mispronounce words, like a bright and nervous boy trying to show the admissions director that he’s well-read. His syntax is highly individualistic. He’s bouncy and affectionate and funny in a joshy way as opposed to a witty way. But he is, almost transparently, a good man…If he becomes president–when, I believe, he becomes president–he will drive conservatives to distraction with his tendency to think with his heart, and not his brain.
And,
Speeches are the vehicle for philosophy. Interviews are the vehicle of policy. Mr. Kerry does talking points and can’t give an interesting speech. Mr. Bush can’t do talking points and gives speeches full of thought and assertion.
Philosophy takes time. If you connect your answers in an interview to philosophy, or go to philosophy first, you can look as if you’re dodging the question. You can forget the question. You can look a little gaga. But policy doesn’t take time. Policy is a machine gun–bip bip bip. Education policy, bip bip bip. Next.
If I worked for President Bush I’d say spend the next nine months giving speeches, and limit interviews.
And,
Bush is a speechwriter’s dream in that he understands exactly how the White House speech vetting process works. Most presidents don’t, have to learn, and usually master it only after it’s damaged them. But Bush knows how a speech is created because he watched it on and off for 12 years during the administrations of his father and of Ronald Reagan, whom his father served as vice president.
And,
As a personality and in terms of character Bush is, of course, more attractive than Gore—more “normal”, more genuine and authentic and good natured.
And,
Americans do not think Mr. Bush has a persona to dazzle history, they think he is the average American man, but the average American man as they understand the term: straight shooter, hard worker, decent, America-loving, God-loving.
Nooners is, of course, right about Palin. But ever since Reagan and until W. shit the bed, she’s been telling us that that book learnin’ and philosophizin’ and answerin’ policy questions was the stuff of librul weaklings — not the stuff of Great Leaders.
Palin isn’t an anomaly. There’s a reason Republicans love her. She’s the perfect distillation of the Reagan-Bush conservative, the next logical progression, the newest, shiniest model.
Too late to break the mold you’ve so diligently polished over the years, Nooners.

oh my
A small package of bail will be coming to Peggy shortly.
;>)
both Ruth Marcus and the Village’s Dowager Empress Sally have weighed in with similar blasts in the last 2 days – can not wait for Coultergeist to take off on them and Nooners for their ‘jealousy’ and elitist ways
Republican candidates are so predictable that the Japanese can probably construct a robot candidate, like Sony did with the dog. Just push a code for a particular talking point. The upside is that as an inanimate machine, the robo-candidate wouldn’t be tempted to diddle little boys and other persons spouses.
Ah Peggy Peggy Peggy.
A member in good standing of Idiot America
Except she didn’t realize it until it was too late.
Well, to be fair to Nooners, she already has explained why she likes Shrub but not Paylin.
http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/8360.html
The “Two of ‘em” Shrub’s got get Peggy excited more than the “Two” that Paylin’s got.
Very nicely done, Blue! I was thinking about her Bush statements when I read the article. It’s great to see them juxtaposed. Thanx.
well.. let’s take stock here. In the last two weeks, various rethugs leaders have openly endorsed everything from Aryan supremacy to the morality of military juntas in Guatemala, plus all manner of hypocrisy and, to boot, we’ve become educated about their C-Street – senior leaders who purport to represent their constituents while living in a cult house, where they have been indoctrinated into a radical perversion of Christianity, believing as they do in a Nietschaean cult of superman authoritarianism (our gods chose US to rule, as he did King David, and, like King David, our gods have placed us above the law and common Americans, above all mortal notions of good and evil and morality … literally.. and that’s just what they say they believe!). Some of these people are now ideologically closer to the most die-hart AQ propagandists than to mainstream American politics. If one encounters one in a dark alley – or as a passenger on a plane – one would have genuine reason to be scared. We’ve gone waaaay past the Reagan conservative here.. into crazyland.
This post should be published in every newspaper in the country.
Nooners has not a shred of credibility, but she will maintain her media post and she will continue to be a frequent guest expert on tv.
Package of bail for the Package of Fail?
Before they made Sarah they broke the mold.
Funny!
Interesting to note, per Noonan, that GHW Bush served Ronald Reagan as vice president. Hunnnh. I thought pres and VP served the nation. This explains a lot, eh?
sorry… Honduras, not Guatemala.
I was hoping BT would rise to this new Noonan bait. A good one.
‘Jerry, I sometimes believe we’re heading very fast for Armageddon right now’ – Ronald Reagan to Jerry Falwell, 1981.
Crazyland has been dwelled within by these people for a long time. The difference is, now they feel they can flaunt it.
‘The gov didn’t fit, so she must book it’
;>)
yeah.. someone let ‘em out of their heavily fortified compounds in Virginia and now they’re out infectin’ others.
and to the best of my knowledge, Jerry never worked actively to conspire to bring about the armageddon, as the cultists now try to do. Believing its coming is one thing… working actively to destabilize the middle east ’cause you want to accelerate its coming is quite another ;-P
Excellent post BT!
Palin = Bush-in-a-skirt.
Ewwww. With shaved legs, though.
Does she say Bush is a good man….and gives thoughtful speeches? Is this woman divorced from reality as she praises a “good man” murderer and liar? I think I’m about to gag; is there forced retirement for non-sequitur, nonsense, delusion. Just Wow.
You could make the case that Palin is more talented and more capable than Bush. She had zero connections in politics, little money, no name — and became governor on her own.
When people like Nooners started drooling over Chimpy in the late 90s, he was a one term governor who’d gotten the job because of his daddy and failed at everything he ever did.
oh.. give him some credit. As governor, he did, after all, manage to execute hundreds and fill the prisons to overflowin’. What has Palin managed to do as governor? /s.
Only not quite as smart as Bush. Or maybe. Oh man, do the numbers GO that low?
Well, she did try to build a bridge to
the 21st centurynowhere.‘Nuclear War and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ’ – the one brings thoughts of fear, destruction, and death, while the other brings thoughts of joy, hope, and life. They almost seem inconsistent with one another, yet they are indelibly intertwined.’ – Introduction to Nuclear War and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, Falwell, 1983.
When a dispensationalist preaches such things to their flock in writing and in person, ‘actively conspiring’ takes on a different shade of meaning…And when one who espouses such things has the ear of a muttonheaded ex-pitchman who happens to be in charge of a vast nuclear arsenal – either the ‘courage of convictions’ was lacking, or wiser heads prevailed.

All true. But the elephant(rethug) in the room remains. In 2008 at least 40% of the people who voted, voted for McCain/Palin, even tho it was very obvious that she was totally unqualified to be VP, never mind POTUS. Over 40% of the people who voted in 2008 think that Palin is qualified to be POTUS. Now that is scary, No? Then again, at least 50% of the voters in 2K and 2004 thought that Bush was qualified to be POTUS and as we all learned to our sorrow, he wasn’t.
Question, not why the rethugs keep throwing up people who can’t even swim in the shallow end, but even tho Gore is smart and the MSM for whatever reason did their level best to destroy him, what on earth were the dems thinking when they threw up Kerry against Bush in 04? Preppy vs Preppy? Wasn’t there anyone else out there?
Outside the box, other than Obama, who is a smart guy, are there any others who could stand up to the total desire of the MSM to destroy any front running dem?
Is Palin representative of the intelligence found in the “leaders” of the rethug party? I have to admit there are some real nutjobs running around congress. Note. Google Authoritarian Followers, that is very descriptive of the rethug members of congress..
Not convinced of that. It’s almost impossible to tell, they’re both so inarticulate.
Think Peggy after seeing Obama connect with crowds ( the GOP is all kinds of spooked about that) she realized that the GOp needs someone better than Bush or Sarah an earnest salesman’s/Liars I believe what I say no matter the product is just won’t cut it anymore?
and don’t forget that Gov of Texas is not one of the really powerful jobs. The real power in Tx is in the Speaker of the House and the Lt Gov, not the gov. gwb had lots of hours of free time. Then again, he took at least 1000 days of vac. while in the WH.
I think Peggy and the Establishment, the CW providers in the MSM have almost come to the realization that when voters are in a Crisis first they panic which explains Bush’s polls after 9/11 then they pay attention to the issues once the panic wears off.
Bush and Sarah can sell the base who believe already and motivate them. When voters are not paying attention that is all you need to win an election.
But when the majority of voters are paying attention you need someone to explain the issues someone whose facts don’t get thrown into dispute after a 5 minute google search.
As more younger more computer aware voters get to the polls well the GOP is going to have to start finding policies that align with reality.
Controlling the MSM controlling the message is not going to work unless you get rid of the blogs. Controlling the message does not work if all you got is failure.
Larry Kudlow can still keep putting lipstick on the pig thats the Bush Year’s economy but nobody sane wants to hear stories of Larry repeating the details of that drunken night.
Nobody thinks we will win in Iraq we are happy to be getting out without to many losses. We hope the same for Afghanistan.
Where is Ossama been Forgotten Bush? Just Try selling your legacy!
GOP civil war can we hope?
This wingnut, retired nurse was pontificating on the evils of socialized medicine. I explained to her that “across the board socialized medicine” was a dead issue. It’s not even being considered. (You know the public-option drill). She had no rebuttal, so she attacked John Edwards, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton, the CEO of BET, and Bill Nelson. She wants to punch them all in the face.
Somewhere in her monologue, she had disclosed that she was paying her unemployed son’s health insurance premium of $600 per month.
She is legally blind, on medicare, uses public transportation (and blind services) and listens to (right wing) books on tape from the library.
Nuts like this lady are plentiful. They love Nooners.
I forgot to add that Nurse Lady told me that she knows a great deal about politics.
Dangerous Fact: Everyone who watches Glenn Beck considers himself to be more politically astute than the average person.
“As more younger more computer aware voters get to the polls well the GOP is going to have to start finding policies that align with reality.”
The GOP’s problem is that they seem to think that by embracing new electronic technologies (twitter), that their problems connecting with voters will be solved. They don’t understand that using new technologies devoid of content is not going to work.
Joe Trippi taught Dean, and then Obama, the importance of using new electronic media to build and expand a voter base. Good thing Joe worked for the good guys or we might all be speakin’ Alaskan now.
The GOP seems to be hysterical maybe they are to fragmented to have a civil war. I think they doubt their just say No to every idea Obama has strategy is working.
I am sorry. Did your post omit the portion of Noonan’s column where Bill Kristol leaves the NRO cruise ship and sails into Juneau on magical dolphins to discover Sarah Palin?
Agreed the GOP sees new tech as a way to better sell their old message and get out the votes well they are still figuring that one out.
They do not seem to realize the new tech lets voters check the truth of their message themselves.
Twitter, MySpace, Facebook won’t save them they need pages people want to link to without getting laughed at after their friends check the facts with a google search.
I can’t wait to see how she deplores and describes their looks.
Wow, is this the same Peggy Noonan who wrote:
THAT is fucking GOLD!!!
The Swedes marrying Swedes guy did he not take highschool biology? If both parents have a trait they have a greater chance of passing that trait to their kids. Once a bad trait is in the family marrying someone even if they are of an other race is a good way to reduce the chances of passing on that trait to your kids.
Marrying someone else with that trait increases the odds your kids will also have the trait.
Race is not a factor the question is do you have this trait, does your partner have this trait?
I wonder how many Ayrans know that
Ayranssorry Iranians ( same word Germans and Iranians both belong to the Indo European group of languages but the Iranians have had writing longer than the Germans). And they have been calling their country Iran or Aryan land for centuries. The word refers to a barbarian people who invaded Europe Iran and India who shared the same language which has branched off over time.
I do savor, thank you very much. What else does she have to say?
O, never mind!
NYT today http://www.google.com/hostedne…..gD99B62100
has a puff piece on Palin’s finances. They make about $200,000, their hopuse is worth $500,000 or maybe $1,000,000, she will have a book deal worth lots, her legal bills are at $600,000 and mounting and they are taking care of a family of six (and that might not count everyone).
They can’t sell the house. Fund raising has been down. If there is a book deal, I haven’t read about it. $200,000 isn’t enough to keep them spending like an Alaska family of six. And, how about those personal legal fees of three years of earnings before taxes?
I think they are broke and that’s why she quit. Momma has to go to work!!
Maybe it’s because Palin is a woman.
I’ve been wondering about this since September. Why did Kathline Parker and Noonan openly shiv Palin with a rusty knife over her lack of intelligence, when they loved Shrub’s country bumpkin act.
Perhaps it’s because, while Parker and Noonan are both photogenic, they still had to have skills to succeed. They never got to skate on perkyness and eye-winking flirtyness, alone.
I can see their wheels turning, “we worked our asses off, and this dumb bimbo, former sportscaster passes us by, simply cause she crossed and uncrossed her before the with board of directors.”
They must of been unhinged. It’s now different than any office horror story: seasoned pro gets passed over by hot, young dim wit who trades on her looks.
See Bush and Reagan succeeded in spite of their looks, but not Palin.
You can see why they resented her.
