Part of what we’re trying to do in “Saving Freedom” is just show that where we are, we’re about where Germany was before World War II where they became a social democracy. You still had votes but the votes were just power grabs like you see in Iran, and other places in South America, like Chavez is running down in Venezuela. People become more dependent on the government so that they’re easy to manipulate. And they keep voting for more government because that’s where their security is. When our immigrants get here, they’re worried, because they see it happening here.
So DeMint joins Paul Broun, the Jacksonville GOP and the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County who’ve done the Obama’s-just-like-Hitler thing.
It’s important to remember that when Dick Durbin condemned the illegal torture at Gitmo, he was forced into a tearful public apology for "comparing our men and women in uniform to the Nazis."
Somehow I doubt DeMint — who’s previously publicly agitated for an insurrection — will get the same treatment.
Funny how that works.

Miscreant
Corporatist projection.
I sure don’t see where DeMint is comparing Obama to Hitler. I do see where he is comparing Germany before WWII to current day America in terms of more and more people relying more and more on BIG Brother for everything. When you depend on BIG for everything you’ll most likely vote for whoever promises more handouts from BIG.
DeMint made a well thought out point.
Sorry.
In closing let me quote Thomas Paine:
That government is best which governs least. Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.
In closing, let me invite you to visit Somalia.
Lemme see now, who was it that snooped on just about anybody they wanted to? Tortured whoever they wanted to? Started wars based on lies? Reprogrammed the DOJ to further a political agenda? IIRC it was Cheney and the Rethugs, speaking and acting through their puppet Shrub.
DeMint, you’re talkin’ through yer paper asshole.
Sieg Heil!
Sheesh, what a bunch of maroons.
When Thomas Paine made that comment, corporations were not considered, almost, citizens.
Also, he had no issues with “regulation” as opposed to “governing”, which ignorant people tend to conflate or confuse. Like with any “perfect Ideology”, humans need oversight and ungoverned capitalism is closer to a pirate state like Somalia than something considered modern or even livable.
We are talking Republicans here. They are screaming at the darkness inside their increasingly small box.
The joke is, as he has shown over and over again, that Obama is only slightly less conservative than they are.
Marx made this point in Capital, Vol I in 1867. By admitting that state regulation is necessary in order to maintain a stable economy the Rethugs see that as agreeing with Marx. Not gonna happen.
At times I think Friedman’s unregulated free market theories were supposed to prove Marx wrong. Friedman failed spectacularly.
What the heck is this “Saving Freedom” he is talking about? He evokes the same feeling from me when he uses the word as did Bush. They cheapen and soil the very concept. What unworthy public ’servants’ they both are/were.
Should there be “Read More” links at the bottom of the posts? Mods? I haven’t checked all the pages, but there’s one here (Leads right back here) and on here
http://firedoglake.com/2009/07…..-stimulus/
Or is it just my browser?
Thanks for your attention.
Since the only “communists” are in Cuba and China (in actuality neither is communist, they’re bureaucratic dictatorships) the Rethugs need somebody to “save” us from. Hitler and the Nazis are the only boogeymen they’ve got left that living people remember. What we need to be saved from is the Rethugs.
All the posts on my front page have the Read More link. Vista and FF3.
Wingnuts love to pull out the Paine quote to justify the drowning of government in the bathtub. Just think how much better off retirees would be without social security, or veterans without the VA, or the developing world without US foreign aid (yes, sometimes it works), or children without the FDA, or workers without OSHA, or disaster victims without FEMA (albeit when it’s staffed with competent people), or all of us without the National Park System. Government, staffed by committed, competent people adds value to our lives as individuals and as a society.
Funny though, that when it comes to women’s bodies, the wingnuts are all about big government. Wonder why that is?
DeMint’s an ignorant ass. He and Rep. King should be looking for other work.
(grin)
Well said.
Women’s bodies, and their own peculiar brand of religion.
They make me want to bite someone.
When rethugs talk about freedom they are refering to the carte blanche freedom of corporate entities to prey on a defenseless people.
As a Nazi-like organization, the Republic Party is always on the lookout for a new Hitler.
All the posts on the front page should have those links. I’m talking about this page right here. :) I think all the pages are like that and it’s just an oversight.
Hmmm. That sounds like a mini-microscopic acknowledgement that Obama is not a total misguided right-wing neocon fascist opportunistic anti-progressive bought-and-paid-for maroon. Sweet!
The term “Big Brother” has historically been used to describe how the Soviet leadership controlled Soviet citizens. It had nothing to do with a fascist state and conditions in pre-war Germany. In coining the term, George Orwell was describing a political system where the leadership was a kind of secular religion, where “Big Brother” was like unto God (like in North Korea) and where the government ruled through fear, re-writing history, and getting the citizenry to spy on each other. Like Big Brother himself, those who use this kind of argument are attempting nothing more than to control Americans by scaring the populace into rejecting government by Democrats.
The whole home page is a bit of a muddle right now. No FDL header. Links at top randomly positioned.

Has Limpy Limbaugh climbed onto the Obama-is-Hitler wagon yet or is he the ox pulling the wagon?
DeMint is of the same intellectual cloth as Jeff Sessions and Jim Inhofe… dumb and dumber. I wonder if he and Lindsey have private moments under the Palmetto trees discussing Mark Sanford’s foibles?
It’s amazing how much stupid there is in SC politics.
No, I guess it really isn’t…
Yup — classic right-wing projection syndrome.
DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”
http://firedoglake.com/2009/02…..socialism/
A Congressman advocating Rebellion against the government Nancy get a Spine start getting votes to expel these people.
I haven’t spent a lot of time in SC and recall that Charleston is a real nice city. Trying to remember if I drank any of their water while I was there – sure hope not!!
Sanford and DeMint – what a pair!
Barbara, I refreshed my browser and that fixed it.
Ok Jim lets end government support First instead of helping the banks lets seize their assets so the American tax payer can get their money back.
All you free market GOPers who bought bank stock your out of luck. I the Tax Payer get paid first!
PeopleCorporations especially Military contractors become more dependent on the government so that they’re easy to manipulate. And they keep voting for more government because that’swhere their security is.
Fixed it for you Jim
Ah. DeMint must’ve been talking about some other dictator who was in charge of Germany before WWII when there were show elections.
Jim where has government spending grown the most the Military, Healthcare, Social Security?
Social Security keeps old people from poverty, Healthcare keeps them well the Military can’t find Ossama bin Forgotten after how many years?
I think Military spending gets cut first we need to right size and focus on our core needs like catching Ossama forget star wars.
You mean DeMint won’t cave like Durbin did? Whose fault is that?
I’m sick of hearing how Republicans get away with this or that, or IOKOYAR. That’s whiny, defeatist crap.
You know why Republicans get away with things? Because the limp response from the Left is always “Waaa, they always get away with things! It’s not fair!”
Durbin, who was generally right, made the choice to look weak. DeMint, who is generally wrong, will make the decision to look strong.
That’s not the Republicans’ fault.
As long as President Obama keeps rolling over for them the fascists Republicans will keep kicking him in his nuts. They make fun of his wussiness openly ‘every day’.
he’s clearly suffering from the onset of Demintia
Jim DeMint, thou dost protest too much.
And as to Torgo, try taking some of Paine’s comments “in context” before you just toss them around. Paine might not be a big fan of Obama, but I suspect he would be much closer aligned to us on the left than any other political group in the country, were he alive today.
I agree that Durbin fucked up. It’s on him.
But the GOP would not have been able to apply the same pressure to Durbin had the Village media not gone along with their hissy kabuki.
Hey Demint – Love it or leave it.
Thanks! Mine’s all better, too.
Oh, for the love of God, please, please leave it. At least the government part of it.
Their GOP Politically Correct hissy kabuki.
To further illustrate my point, here’s a post I …er, posted at TPM today on the same topic:
It seems that Democrats just can’t help voluntarily putting themselves in the weak position.
I do agree, also, that the problem here is the Democrats in the Senate (uh, Harry?) will not make a big deal out of this at all.
I’d be shocked if its even mentioned.
There should be non-stop calls today on the floor demanding DeMint apologize.
He looks after things while the Master is away.
I never said he was. He’s more a misguided right-wing neocon fascist opportunistic anti-progressive bought-and-paid-for maroon lite.
Who knew DeMint worried what our immigrants thought.
This statement says just about all there is to say about DeMint (F-Oceania)
Quoeth John DeMint: “President Obama’s call for the reinstatement of Zelaya is a slap in the face to the people of Honduras. And the resolution written by the Organization of American States tramples over the hopes and dreams of a free and democratic people. The rule of law is working in Honduras. President Obama should not undermine the democratic institutions that guarantee freedom by forcing an illegitimate President back into power.”
Zelaya is the democratically elected president of Honduras, ousted by a military coup. Thus, according to DeMint, “free and democratic” means “military dictatorship”, “democratic institutions that guarantee freedom” mean right wing generalissimo declaring marshal law, and “illegitimate President” means someone who actually won an election. Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.
North Korea! Possibly a couple of ex-Soviet ’stans.
oh.. another real winner of a DeMint quote:
“On what basis does the Administration demand Zelaya’s reinstatement?” DeMint asked. “His removal from office was no more a coup than was Gerald Ford’s ascendance to the Oval Office, or our newest colleague Al Franken’s election to the Senate.”
So for DeMint Al Franken is a senator by virtue of seizing power in a violent and bloodthirsty coup d’etat.
This is a bit off topic, but in the spirit of exposing right wing ignorance, people need to see just how stupid Sean Hannity really is.
You have to see this clip of Hannity making a complete idiot of himself on cap and trade.

The hallucinations of a Southern baboon.
I guess Godwin’s Law doesn’t apply to Republicans, just like all the other laws don’t apply.
How can I be pissed off and laughing at the same time? Huh? HUH??? Answer that one!!
Oh and never mind if Republican mailing lists are used or that the document says paid for by the Republican party and that items were likely from from party office.
